It's sad that it takes a near recession for people to realize that there are bigger and much more important issues to vote on than abortion. Shouldn't policy makers be worried about the economy and other political issues rather than some pointless moral debate?

    • Posted By: chance2live @ 11/04/2008 8:25:06 AM

recession is about the quality of life. Abortion is not just a moral issue, it is about the lack of life. Ripping babies apart to satisfy the ones who feel their life is worth more than anothers. I think that baby would love the chance to make it into a recession vs. being aborted. How selfish!

I definitely agree with jupmod.....well said.

Abortion is a moral issue. It has no place in the courts or in the legislature. It is a decision to be made by a woman and her spiritual advisor. Abortions should be done in hospitals, not abortion clinics where staff are targeted and sometimes killed. In my opinion, abortion is heinous, but that is my opinion and I have no right to force it upon anyone. Life begins when everyone minds his own business.

Pro life...you and the likes of you are the abomination. Your concern doesn't span one inch past controlling another human being. Unwanted children end up in gangs and in prison or dead. That's a life alright. You just care about a birth not a life at all. You make me sad and scared to share the planet with you.

    • Posted By: chance2live @ 11/04/2008 8:19:20 AM

unwanted children get adopted by loving parents. If fetuses are allowed to be born they then get a voice to speak, which you now have because you were not aborted. That would make us all on a even playing ground. Why only listen to the born- how barbaric to think ripping apart a fetus so it cannot survive is humane.

hey, floridacadman, if obama's associates aren't so questinable they keep him out of the White House, these associations shouldn't hurt us.

  • Posted By: general knowledge @ 11/04/2008 8:10:45 AM

What's worse, a country that won't take care of it's children, or a country that kills them before they are born?

If that's the dilemma you are dealing with when deciding on who to vote for, ask yourself, what has Obama done to take care of the country's children? What has John McCain done? You'll find those answers in your heart, and in your memory, when you remember Obama calling unplanned children a "punishment," I was a punishment then, and so were many of you. All my children were unplanned, and they are all blessings, not punishment.

I think John McCain knows that children are gifts to be treasured, not souls to be returned to sender.

    • Posted By: floridacadman @ 11/04/2008 8:16:18 AM

Then dont play God. If your going to save them in the whom, adopt them when theyre born...have ya done that yet?
Oh, and you cant kill them at 18 either for a war and cause Bush declared over 6 years ago...see, thats a double standard, and in case you dont have any kids, theyre still children at that age.

  • Posted By: UnknowableComic @ 11/04/2008 8:16:09 AM

Why on Earth is Cameron Strang supporting obama anyway? Abortion isn't the only (though it's the easist case to make: anyone who has ever had partial-birth abortion even *described* to them would agree it's a barbaric and horrible thing to do, yet obama voted against a ban. TWICE.) reason to distrust this spawn of the Chicago political machine (world-famous as the most corrupt and corrupting political environment there is; even John Dillinger stood in awe!) He hasn't produced even a single, solitary person to stand as a *positive* character reference to attempt to balance-out the likes of:
jeremiah wright - the now-infamous radical racist leader of a church obama attended (in obama's own words "regularly") for TWO WHOLE DECADES while he built his political foundation
william ayers - infamous for decades (since obama was only seven!) as a "mad bomber" radical domestic terrorist who, on Sept. 11th 2001 of all times, went on record saying he wished he and his fellow anarchists had set more bombs and caused more terror. obama not unwittingly associated himself with this character even to the point of launching his political career from ayers' house!!
tony rezko - convicted shady "businessman" and one-time "neighbor" of obama's (and by "neighbor" I mean his machinations resulted in obama receiving a killer deal on a piece of Chicago property in an "offer" (read: "scheme") intricately involving the rezkos and requiring they close their land deal the same day as the obamas -- even obama admits his involvement in this was "a mistake")
rashid kahlidi - PLO operative , social butterfly, and (if not "friend of") at least "pleasant acquaintance" of obama's (such that he's on tape toasting him at a dinner where, well, let's just say the people in attendance wouldn't have been happy if there had been any Israelites in the room.
All the above, in addtion to associates such as raila odinga, khalid al masour and others, and supporters including louis farrakhan and momar kadaffi (yes, THAT kadaffi!) and not one lone voice from a "respectable" person (and yes, you can discount all of hollywood ...including ben affleck) to vouch for his "character"? barack obama couldn't get a job as his own security guard, but we're willing to put his hand over "the big red button"?!?! Outrageous!

Oh, btw, to cncrnd1979: I'd say "God bless you!" but I can see He already has -- keep up the good work!

and to floridacadman: I'll answer that one to dixie -- Two for me, and I can cite by name more families than obama has shady friends (and that's a LOT!) who have; you're not as well-travelled as you might think, and just because YOU aren't acquainted with any (or many) familes who have chosen to shoulder some of society's shirked responsibilities certainly doesn't mean they don't exist!

Soon all the pathetic, worthless, godless heathen will be brought to their knees as god exacts judgement on this immoral country that has turned it's back on him. It's about time!!!!

    • Posted By: floridacadman @ 11/04/2008 8:01:41 AM

Thanks for that, but shouldnt you be off waving a chicken bone over a candle or something?

  • Posted By: lorstar @ 11/04/2008 7:55:08 AM

And I'm going the other way. Having always voted Democrat because of that issue, I have finally come to the conclusion that I can vote for McCain because of the Democrat-controlled congress and the hope that they'll shoot down any conservative justice appointees who might overturn RvW.

  • Posted By: tbartman1 @ 11/04/2008 7:54:37 AM

What's interesting is that Christian Conservatives vote for Republicans because of their anti-abortion stance, and then once elected the Republicans do nothing about it. From 2000-2006, Republicans had the White House, the Senate, the House, and 7 out of 9 Supreme Court appointments, but they didn't overturn Row v. Wade. Why? Because they don't want to. They just want abortion as their trigger issue to get people to keep voting for them. Were Row ever actually overturned, there would be no reason left for a Christian Conservative to vote for Republicans, and the Republicans know that.

Finally, the number of abortions in the US went down under Clinton, but up in the first year of Bush. He then directed the CDC to stop tracking the numbers nationally. If you REALLY wanted to end abortion, wouldn't you vote for the person who wants better sex education, better access to birth control, better women's health, elimination of poverty, etc. etc. etc. That would be the Democrat.

What about the mens rights......it is their baby also and they don't even need to be informed when a woman decides to abort..........if you don't want to have babies you shouldn't be having sex, period......

  • Posted By: dlcdd1982 @ 11/04/2008 7:53:01 AM

Obama is FOR Partial Birth Abortion--Check it out and see how barbaric it is. Then you decide if you want someone that has such a low regard for innocent life to run our country.

  • Posted By: corwin27 @ 11/04/2008 7:45:13 AM

It always strikes me as strange that the abortion debate is always between white males. With the exception of Sarah Palin, no women are cited in the article. White males are the LAST people from which I expect a cogent discussion on women's reproductive rights, or women's spirituality. Maybe when the christian conservatives provide consistent financial support to unwanted babies through their early lives, I'll start listening.

  • Posted By: march21 @ 11/04/2008 7:43:25 AM

Killing kids is far more important than if folks can't drive nice cars and eat out when and where they want to!! I'll take the abortion issue for 200 Alex

  • Posted By: kristoferf @ 11/04/2008 6:44:38 AM

Jehuck...Obama opposed a bill in the Illinois legislature ??? that state already has a more restrictive 'partial birth??? and saving a living aborted baby law on the books. Learn the facts, idiot! Secondly, the dean of the law school at Pepperdine University and another professor Notre Dame from have gone on record to state that the Republican Party is intrinsically more evil than the Democrats. Democrats care for the poor and needy while the Republicans promote war, guns, and the death penalty. Wake up right wing religious fanatics - you are the evil in this world promoting hate and violence!

    • Posted By: dixie90000 @ 11/04/2008 7:11:53 AM

that's why it's a proven fact that christians give more of their income to the needy. is that spreading hate and violence? peaking of violence, how about being ripped from your mother's womb by suction. probably a little violent. 46 million americans obliterated by a mother's choice. It's wrong, I should know, I made that same choice. A society that kills it's own can't survive.

      • Posted By: lagata @ 11/04/2008 7:42:02 AM

If "a society that 'kills it's (sic) own'" - as you put it - "can't survive," then how do explain all the societies on earth today? Women have been aborting and committing infanticide (i.e., controlling their reproduction) since there have been humans. You may not like it, you may not agree with it, but it is a fact. Look it up.

    • Posted By: dixie90000 @ 11/04/2008 7:14:04 AM

that's why one of his first bills he is going to sign is the freedom of choice act which will repeal any restrictions bush has put in on late term and partial birth abortions. he really values life

One sin is not greater than the other. Gay marriage is considered idolatry. Abortion is murder. The death penalty is murder. McCain says he believe marriage in between one man and a woman. In general, republicans tend to support the death penalty. Democrats are pro-choice. It doesn't mean they believe abortion is okay but they support a woman's right to choose. Religiously speaking, you are danged if you do, danged if you don't. So, why not think for yourself and vote for what is best for your family economically. I'm in the middle class and I am drowning. I'm voting Obama for a change in the economy and health care system because it is the best thing for my family. My church has spent a lot of time using the scare tactic so that the congregation will vote for McCain. I'm very disappointed by that. I don't judge my preacher for voting for a republican because I am a Christian. However, after his sermons on politics, I absolutely think he is judging me for voting democratically. For the record, I don't believe in abortion, gay marriage, death penalty, etc. but I believe one sin is just as bad as the other.

To me as a Christian, and human being, abortion is torture of the unborn. To be salted to death, ripped apart piece by piece is unthinkable. The unborn are not given the courtesy of voice-they would not choose to be aborted , if asked. I watched a online video called "The silent Scream" these unborn babies feel pain, even at 12 weeks. So to me , yes all sins are probably about equal, but it's not about the equality of the sins, it is the about getting the opportunity to speak individually about our problems and ask for help. The unborn babies are not allowed to make a voice like all others, and to make a change for living out our life. Everyone else gets chances to do better by their voice. deathrow inmates have a voice to get help and get out, sinners can change, everyone can possibly change their life by someone helping them fix whatever ailes them, but the unborn. So, I vote for the person who lets these unborn have a voice, and pray that everyone else's voice is listened to, then we are all on the same ground.

Everyone look back to when the ten commandments were taken out of school. There were no school shootings, drugs, or sarcasm. Abortion wasn't even a thought in the fifties like it is now. Liberal folks who thought they knew the way which did you notice is just about the same as atheism made new laws of the land. Ted Kennedy believes in God about as much as Angelina Jolie. ( Buddha is not god) . The worse thing about is I feel like most republicans just say they are conservative for a vote not for their own morals.I am a true conservative, I believe life is a gift not a choice. Democrats make no sense though. They have spent milliions trying to keep a snail darter from going extinct and in the other hand make sure that babies are being suctioned through a tube at the so called "Mothers " discretion. Your telling me snails are more important than Man. Doesen't make alot of since. But neither do liberals. I love liberals and would love to see them change to do something productive like choose life.

rdaffron is perfectly correct. Abortion is an abomination. By Newsweek's reasoning, a reader of Newsweek is a joke and yes, Ergo, the writer is a joke. Pretzel logic. I am pro life. Aren't you glad your mother was? I am a Catholic convert and will be a Catholic until the day I die and my son and his extended family are all strong Evangelicals with decent MORAL consciences and pro-life

    • Posted By: floridacadman @ 11/04/2008 7:40:01 AM

The religious fanatics are what is wrong with this country, and every other one. All this destruction and 9/11, is about religion. I wish every one of you would exit the planet and let people just "be."

  • Posted By: craigsmith216 @ 11/04/2008 7:28:04 AM

The phrase "mean-spirited rhetoric" really stood out in this story. Virtually everyone who identify themselves as pro-life consider abortion to be nothing more than clinical infanticide. So pardon us if our rhetoric seems a little mean-spirited. If our government were to endorse the annual systematic extermination of 1.3 million people of any other demographic, you can rest assured that the outrcry would be quite a bit more shrill than even the worst vituperations of the Christian right. I understant that many people don't agree with the pro-life analysis, but if you understand where we are coming from I think two obvious conclusions will emerge:
    1) Despite the best attempts of moderate (read: greedy fiscal) republicans and left-leaning Christian leaders, abortion will continue to be an extremely important issue for evangelicals
    2) The rhetoric surrounding this issue is always going to be extreme--as it is viewed as life or death.

Here is how a typical social conservative views the issue. If you are convinced that life begins at conceptions, you will be pro-life. Perhaps there is some aberrant percentage point out there who holds the former and not the latter, but if so, I have never met or heard of them, and they are truly a statistical insignifigance. If you are unsure about whether or not life begins at conception (this is actually where I am), you should be pro-life, as the issue is literally one of life-and-death. Thus, in our view the only person who can be pro-choice and claim any form of moral decency is a person who is fully convinced on both scientific and ethical grounds that human does not begin until some later date. Since no one has ever presented a conclusive proof on either scientific or moral grounds, and extremely few pro-choice advocates even attempt to, the pro-lifers draw the following conclusions:
    1) You probably can't demonstrate this; meaning
    2) you are either ignorant of or indifferent to the fact that you support clinical infanticide.
In any event, we don't think very much of you.
Please no one respond with a question about how many children I've adopted or talking points about the plight of a mother. They're compeltely irrelevant to the scenario above. I readily admit that many parents make bad choices, many children are born into bad circumstances, and that many church-going pro-life people should do more to alleviate these social failings...but none of the above scenarios justifies murder. It's a simple moral lesson we all learned in pre-school: Two wrongs don't make a right.

    • Posted By: floridacadman @ 11/04/2008 7:33:52 AM

I wont ask how many babies youv adopted, because Ive asked it several times already and no one would answer, because they havent, which I already knew. Thats why Roe V Wade will not overturn, everyone has a "cause" till it effects them, then its all about letting someone else take up the slack, and that, is what makes the republican argument irrelevant.
"Im not adopting, let someone else do it" "Save em in the whomb, kill em at 18"
Its just foul hypocrisy that has no teeth because you guys only believe it, till it becomes inconvenient.

  • Posted By: cncrnd1979 @ 11/04/2008 6:59:18 AM

To those who think the president has no control - the issue about abortion on this election is that we do have the chance to overturn Roe vs. Wade in this next presidency if a pro-life president appoints a pro-life Supreme Court Justice. We're that close... and this will affect us for the next few generations. Most Justices are appointed in their fifties and stay until their 80's.... so if a pro-choice Justice comes in - we could have MORE abortion, MORE innocent blood shed - and less people in upcoming generations. Solve that Social Security crisis!!

    • Posted By: sawyernathan @ 11/04/2008 7:09:25 AM

You idiot your current President has had all the chances in the world to overturn it but he blinds you and makes you scared of things and uses abortion and gay marriage to keep getting your vote.

      • Posted By: ChristianVoter @ 11/04/2008 7:31:08 AM

Question: Is it killing only after the fetus is out of the womb, or does life start before that? Answer: Life begins at conception, ergo, killing is killing both before and after vaginal delivery.. Question: Isn't it ok to kill some"thing" that couldn't survive on its own outside the womb? Answer: How long would you have survived if your mother had left you alone after birth? How about if she had used scissors and a vacuum to welcome you into the world? You may not care about the milliions of babies that are murdered every year, but you'd sure be screaming if you were next in line.
