Politics: Campaign 2008

Photos: Backstage with Obama

NEWSWEEK’s photographers caught exclusive glimpses of the Democratic candidate down the homestretch

It's probably been the most photographed election in history, with everyone from professional photojournalists to supporters wielding camera phones creating a visual record of Sen. Barack Obama's historic campaign for the presidency. The NEWSWEEK exclusives in this gallery, however, capture many of the behind-the-scenes moments that few outside the campaign get to see. Here, a collection of some of the finest work by photographers Charles Ommanney and Scout Tufankjian, on assignment for NEWSWEEK, as they shot the final months of Obama's bid for the presidency.

the caption to this picture of Obama with two campaign staffers confused me for a minute. I thought, "What? That guy who directed Elf is writing speeches for Obama?". I'm sure he's tired of hearing that.

Yes, of course they have and many things worse. And Obama is not annointed or like a god. He is a man who will need our support in the difficult times ahead. You can be part of the paroblem or part of the solution-your choice.
