The kids really are alright. And not just the kids showed up.

First Read links to the voter-eligible population expert, Michael McDonald from George Mason University, who notes that the turnout percentage is awesome:

Provided the number stands, the turnout rate for yesterday's election was the highest in 100 years, according to the estimate from turnout guru Dr. Michael McDonald at George Mason University. Almost 137 million (136,631,825) went to the polls -- 64.1% of the voting-eligible population. 1960 saw 63.7% of the populace go out to vote; In 1908, 65.7% voted. It was, of course, the most people ever to go to the polls topping 2004's 122 million. That's 12% increase from 2004.

For those wondering why the current total vote in the presidential adds up to approximately 117 million, note that it's going to climb. There is still a ton of vote missing on the West coast.

However, it's not clear how big the total will be.

Curtis Gans, director of the nonpartisan Committee for the Study of the American Electorate at American University and dean of turnout experts, said his early numbers show 2008 to be about equal to or better than 1964, but not higher than 1960. He said it looks like total votes, once absentees are tallied (which could take a day or so), will be "somewhere between 134 and 135 million."

That's still the highest turnout in 40 years percentage wise (it was 60.1 of the voter-eligible population in 2004, and you have to go back to 1968 to get a figure that's at least 60%.)

We commented this morning on the changing demographics ( less fewer whites.) In 2000, the exit polls put whites at 81%.



Maybe McCain's campaign would have worked better in 2000. Maybe what thwarted it was this:

There is a chance that American turnout will match or surpass the 1960 turnout, and if it does, that will mean approximately 136 million people voted. That raw number will be the most people who have ever voted in an American election.

One of the delightful things about poll watching is the chance to delve into the internals and see what Americans think. Not what the agenda-driven pundits tell you Americans think, but what they really think. For example, America is a center-right country the way New England is a center-right region. You know New England. That would be the place where there are no Republican House members.

How did that happen? Sarah Palin. Oh, not Sarah herself. She wasn't running against Jim Himes in CT-04, or Chris Murphy in CT-05 or Joe Courtney in CT-02 (don't call him Landslide Joe any more. While he won his first race in 2006 by 83 votes, he won his second on Tuesday by over 100,000.) But every Republican represented the party that supported George W.Bush and his even more ignorant, vindictive and petty replacement.

Here's some exit poll information that needs to be fully understood:





The Palin supporters need to understand that the country (60% of the country) in blow-out landslide numbers say "NO WAY". It doesn't matter how invested her supporters are. The public decided Palin was a bigger drag on the McCain candidacy than George Bush, the President with the 20% approval rating. An exaggeration? Not at all.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll in October showed she had become a bigger drag on McCain than President Bush, with voters citing her qualifications as their primary concern.

A CNN poll released last weekend showed Palin's unfavorable ratings were twice as high as when McCain picked her, and 57 percent of Americans believed she didn't have the personal qualities a president needed.

The interesting thing is that the American public's opinion is so negative even before the long knives come out.

All of this is occurring with the backdrop of an impending civil war in the GOP as the party starts to implode. Sarah is the candidate of the Buchanan brigades and cultural conservatives. It doesn't matter how ignorant she is (Africa is a country), how resistant to improving herself (refuses prep for Katie Couric so Sarah can be Sarah), how venal ($150K on clothes for her herself and family) and how poorly prepared for governance (see Sarkozy "interview"). The real issue?

IN MY OPINION: WAS IT PALIN WHO ENERGIZED THE REPUBLICAN BASE? OR COULD ANYONE OF THE BETTER QUALIFIED REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS, SUCH HUCKABEE, HAVE CREATED THE SAME EFFECT. WHY DID MCCAIN CHOOSE PALIN?

I BELIEVE THAT EVEN GOV. RICK PERRY OF TEXAS WOULD HAVE ELECTRIFIED THE REPUBLICAN BASE MORE SO THAN PALIN. BUT MACCAIN WAS SHOOTING FOR THE 18 MILLION VOTERS THAT HILLARY GOT WHICH INCLUDED A LOT OF WOMEN. HE PRESUMED THAT MOST OF THE WOMEN VOTERS THAT VOTED IN THE DEMO PRIMARY WOULD FOLLOW PALIN. THE MAC COMMITTED POLITICAL ASSUMASIDE BY PRESUMPTION.

THE TRICK WAS TO INFLATE PALINS REPUTATION AND IMAGE BY CLAIMING THAT SHE HAD EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE AS MAYOR OF LITTLE WASILLA AND 20 MONTHS A GOV. OF LITTLE ALASKA. IN REALITY, THIS AMOUNT AND KIND OF EXERIENCE WAS NOT ENOUGH TO QUALIFY HER TO WIN ANY POSTION IN THE MAJOR NATIONAL POLITICAL SCENARIO. PALINS PERFORMANCE DURING THE PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEWS DID NOT LIVE UP TO THE INFLATED REPUTATION AND IMAGE SHE WAS PORTRAYED AS IN THE PRO-REPUBLICAN MEDIA AND BY THE REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST.

PALIN RAN OUT OF IMPORTANT AND RELEVANT THING S TO TALK ABOUT AT THE ACCEPTANCE SPEECH DURING THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION. SHE PICKED UP A BAD HABIT OF BASHING OBAMA AS BEING A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER AND MOCKING ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL STRATEGIES THAT WIN ELECTIONS IN POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS.
THIS IS WHAT THE MAC AND PALIN DID PREDOMINANTLY ALL THROUGH THE CAMPAIGN: THEY USED MOCKERY, INSULT, AND LIES. THEY WERE JABBING AT OBAMAS REPUTATION AND JUDGEMENT HOPING THAT THE AMERICAN VOTERS WOULD HANG HIM UP TO DRY, BUT IT BACKFIRED???..THEY SERE THE ONES WHO WERE HANGED OUT TO DRY ON ELECTION DAY.

PALIN WAS NOT COGNIZANT OF THE FACT THAT THE AMERICAN VOTERS WANTED TO CHANGE THE POLITICAL PARTY IN CHARGE OF RUNNING THE GOVERNMENT WHICH WAS HER PARTY, THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. ANOTHER THING THAT SHE DID NOT DID NOT REALIZE, IS THAT OBAMAS CAMPAIGN WAS ALSO PART OF A POWERFUL MOVEMENT AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION LONG OVERDUE. (REMEMBER THE SLOGANS: SI SE PUEDY , YES WE CAN, AND I HAVE A DREAM?) THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS PALIN AND THE MAC LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE SPITTIN AGAINST THE WIND.

IF REPUBLICANS NOMINATE PALIN TO RUN FOR PRESDENT IN 2012, IT WOULD BE THE BEST THING THE REPUBLICANS CAN DO???.FOR THE DEMOCRATS. PALIN WILL NEVER CHANGE HER TACTICS. SPECIALLY IF SHE RESORT TO LIES, INNUENDOS, INSULT, AND MOCKERY TO GET HER POINTLESS MESSAGES ACROSS TO THE VOTERS.

Palin is ABSOLUTELY INEPT. As the VP candidate she truly showed her TRUE self.

Actions speak so much louder than words and her actions speak volumes.

She does NOT belong in a governorship. She obviously rose too fast and can NOT professionally handle the power of higher office.

It is clear the people of Alaska do NOT vett their candidates for office.

Wake up Alaska. You really NEED to raise the professional bar for your political offices to avoid looking as incompetent and pathetic as Palin does right now.

No, Sarah Palin need to stay in Alaska and will be lucky if elected again....Take care of her family that is in disarray big time. Her pregnant 17 years old and rumors her son is also her daughter???s (no medical record provided, why?). Her son had to choose between jail or Iraq....She had her own affair with her husband partner...She has a lot of soul searching to do and above all take care of her family and child (or gd-child) who needs special and devoted care.

Karen, she can't appoint herself to Stevens' seat. The Alaskan legislature passed legislation five years ago mandating a special election in the event of a vacancy in a senate seat. This was after Gov. Murkowski appointed his daughter to a vacant senate seat (his).

Not until republicans start to walk the talk and behave like real patriots (not just talk about it) and VOTE for the best policies for the country instead of:
1- voting for their wallet because of taxes advantages, which only works for the richest and actually is false for must Americans that end up paying higher ???everything??? like with Bush and the tax break disappeared very fast in real life.....
2- voting for one line issue like abortion or gays, because republicans had ample time for over 6 years lately and 20 years out of last 28 in power to do something about it. They won t simply because they use it to take fanatics to the polls and once they solve it their way, people will look then for ISSUES.....something they do not want! Besides, politics and religion should not mix and one majority group should not IMPOSE their religious beliefs to a minority group. A president should GOVERN for ALL AMERICANS of ALL religions. Republicans NEED to understand the simple fact.............There are many issues in the Bible that are closer to Democrats: helping the poor, the sick, children, elderly, NO-killings, NO-greed etc..but they do not talk about those OTHER Bible teachings..............

Also Republicans must stop thinking they belong to THE TOP CLASS ELITE and that the democrats are the POOR that are asking for handouts. That republicans are the one who WORK and democrats are living of republicans taxes, because it is simply NOT TRUE. The truth and we just saw it recently, is that the top companies are the one LIVING OUT OF WORKERS TAXES! 2/3 of U.S companies and 68% of foreign companies DO NOT pay federal income tax. In the last 30 years 600 BILLIONS have been transferred from the bottom 80% to the top 20% tax-wide. Look CORPORATE WELFARE on the internet and see for yourself!. So it is simply a slogan to have people that do not do research vote for republicans, luckily more people are opening their eyes now........

I saw somethng on the news yesterday - I wish I could remember teh detaisl - It was on one of the tv's at the gym and I was more interested in the game on a different tv.

I saw a scroll across the bottom of the screen mentioning that someone in the McCain campaign had mention she was unprepared for the debates and interviews. There was a comment about her not paying nearly enough attention to any single government debate in the past ten years. I have to say, it showed (at least in most interviews).

How could she not be able to name more than one issue the Supreme court was involved in and think she was ready for office?

Several times, I got the impression that putting her on the ticket was a bit of a gimmic. Her "lipstick" jokes and the "hockey mom" thing, just made it hard to take her serious.


If she wants to continue in Washington, she'll need a whole new plan.
