Which, by the way, I don't think this article has enough validity nor was it written well enough to be published. Newsweek should be ashamed. I thought they considered themselves a professional publishing company, but after reading this garbage I will refrain from wasting more time on any of their articles.

What went wrong for McCain? Are you serious? Besides the obvious of being a Republican - - he's white. I voted for issues not color. It's unfortunate this has been made into an issue about race . Black Republicans voting for a Black Democratic President. Was it because he's black or because he's not a Republican?

  • Posted By: reading_is_good @ 11/05/2008 4:43:06 PM

McCain's campaign is definitely not the worse ever. Just look at the results, McCain got 174 electoral votes, which is more than Bush Sr. (168) and Bob Dole (159). And Goldwater whom you mentioned in the article got trounced by LBJ, getting only 52 electoral votes.

On popular votes, McCain ended up with ~46%. Bush W. won in 2004 with 47%. The numbers aren't bad considering all the circumstances which were out of his control ( current unpopularity of Republicans in general and the economic crisis )

    • Posted By: joe_mama @ 11/05/2008 4:50:31 PM

I will agree with you on that one. I thought John Kerry and Al Gore each ran campaigns that were every bit as inept as this one.

And yes, it's the liberal media's fault that John McCain had no consistent message and they're the ones who kept trying to make the election a referendum on William Ayres and Reverend Wright.

      Stoopid media.

As for Politics Girl / "whiteandproudofit"....leave town before Katrina? Hmmmm....well when you don't own a car, and there was no organized transportation to get these folks out of town prior to the hurricane....how would you suggest they leave? Walk to Houston? Hitchhike? AND much of the land...and eventually houses...that people own in the 9th ward area and other parts of New Orleans had belonged to many of those families for generations. some lands were owned since Napoleonic times. You try to trace land records - in some cases as far back as the Louisiana Land Purchase...Not an easy task. Oh, and they got a free trailer to live in for a time in New Orleans. Wow, that's great. They were given more money than their houses were worth...How do you repay someone for the suffering endured that could have been prevented? How many of those folks died trying to get away from the rising flood waters to their attic? Again, told to evacuate, but you don't have a car to do so...You have no choice but to stay put and wait it out. maybe if the government would have been more diligent in repairing the levees or providing transportation out of the city - many people would never have had to meet such a horrible demise. also, the fact that you call yourself "white and proud of it" is ridiculous. You also say that Brooklyn gurl is not concerned with anything but the black cause not the "human cause". Where did you display one bit of humanity in your comments? I would step back and take a good hard look at your "cause"...I think you are very misguided.

The Founding Fathers were not as overwhelmingly Christian as most people believe. " Thomas Paine was a pamphleteer whose manifestos encouraged the faltering spirits of the country and aided materially in winning the war of Independence:
I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of...Each of those churches accuse the other of unbelief; and for my own part, I disbelieve them all." From: The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine"

To Paine belongs the honor of naming our country the United States of America. He was the first to use the name in print, and it was his own creation.

The author of this article blew the McCain campaign way out of proportion. If it was such a disaster, why then, did he have so many votes? Yes, he lost, and yes he made mistakes. But to say it was the worst campaign ever is going too far. May I remind those of you who voted for Barack Obama, that Barack Obama did not even grow up in the United States. He grew up in Indonesia. First of all, I personally would want a president who grew up in America. The rules were plain and simple, every candidate must be born in America. Why should growing up in a different country be any different? Not only that, Barack Obama went to a muslim/islam school. Unless if you are unaware, they pledge for domination. Another instance of un-American pride is when Barack Obama turned from the American flag. Think about all the troops that defend our country, and what it means to defend America. The American flag symbolizes everything we stand for, and Barack Obama turned his back to it. Does that make you feel good about your choice? Additionally, Barack Obama's wife stated just months previous of the election "For the first time I am proud of my country"...wow. That's a comforting thought. As you may have witnessed last night, when John McCain lost the election, he gave a speech that was full of sincerity and support for Barack Obama. John McCain, a veteran of the United States was the proper candidate who should have won...so before you bash him. Look at all the aspects. As for the author of this article...I laugh at you. I am 16 years old and I know more about this situation than you do.

    • Posted By: mtrt1668 @ 11/05/2008 4:43:42 PM

Maybe you need to finish highschool before you talk about what you think you know. McCain wasn't born in this country he was born in Panama and also raised in various foreign countries because of his dad being in the military. Obama only spent a few years in Indonesia and was raised mostly in Hawaii where he attended a private high school on a scholarship. And since you don't have any experience raising a family and paying bills you too probably have no grasp of the economy like your hero McCain. He thinks middle class earns $5 million dollars annually. That must make the majority of American poverty. Grow up and live a life before you start judging without the actual facts

You do seem to have more knowledge than a lot of people I know who voted. Keep it up, and stay in the good fight. It may take a while, but the truth will be known and what's right will prevail. It will take time and work, but it will be worth it. God Bless America. May she stay strong and solid - not wishy washy and weak.

Truth is what is right. Half the things in her post are not even true. I commend you for praising her passion, but do not say what she said was right, because it is a fabrication.

The problem with McCain supporters is that they never went through the time to find out what their candidate was saying was real or not.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 11/05/2008 4:32:52 PM

hhscheeergurl: you think you know more than us, but that is the problem. A person truly knows nothing until they understand how little they know and strive to find the truth. This is where you are lacking. Try looking at all sides, or don't. All and all, kudos for being so passionate at a young age.

    • Posted By: joe_mama @ 11/05/2008 4:24:59 PM

i don't know what's scarier...the fact you would post this nonsense or the fact that you actually believe it.

please remind us, who DID vote for Obama? He won more votes than George Bush did in 2004 (when you guys were talking about mandates and "political capital")

      Who were all these people?

63 million African Americans? too bad there are only 37 million (source: http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/SAFFPopulation?_submenuId=population_0&_sse=on)

Maybe it was 63 million Muslims? Or illegal immigrants? Or radical left wing liberals? Or America-hating baby killers?

Whichever the case, the answer is obvious: America doesn't agree with you. Perhaps you should consider Russia - you can always be sure you know who your president is...he's hand-picked by Putin himself.

      Love,

Because some people will never vote for a Democrat, and some people will never vote for a black man. That's why John McCain still won votes.

  • Posted By: paulte @ 11/05/2008 4:34:01 PM

McCain did the best he could I'm sure. And he & Palin ended up with 46% of the popular vote which is not too shabby. The last time a woman was on the ballot for vp the ticket got less than 42% of the popular vote. McCain had a steep climb but he made mistakes too. One was his vp pick which smacked of diversity and gimmickry. There is also her inexperience for the job of vp. However, his Palin pick has to be seen in the context of an unqualified candidate in the top slot of the Dem ticket.

But the main thing which hurt McCain was the financial meltdown, something not of his making. He did however seem to misunderstand the crisis and came out with a foolish proposal for homeowner mortgage relief. But why financial problems should cause people to rush to the dems is quite beyond my capacity to understand!

Good luck America, you will need it in the next two years until the republicans can re-take the Congress in the mid-term elections!

Now that Obama has the reins of power, we will see how he does. However, I think the Dems holding all the reins of federal power will be a disaster. On this day of celebration for some it should be noted that the stock market dropped 300 points. I don't think Wall Street has any confidence in Obama and neither does almost half of America!

I've seen applicants with incredible resumes but when they come in, they are pathetically underqualified.

Then there are young, bright people with lesser resumes, but they perform outstandingly. Do you get the picture of this? I know you do, but you would deny it no matter what. McCain was behaving terribly--ethically and performance wise. Admit it.

  • Posted By: grizzman43 @ 11/05/2008 1:49:12 PM

I personally dont think it mattered what kind of race McCain ran, the national media by and large acted as though they were the Chinese national press at the Olympics. I think they have done the same on their war coverage as well. They lack objectivity, they have an agenda and they saturate the airways with it.
Wow bombings are down in Iraq so lets ignore all the positve accomplishments being achieved there and move onto Afghanistan. God forbid the news broadcast the great work being done by the troops..lets keep it negative, blast Bush and McCain and all Republicans. why cover the whole truth when we can use the half truth that supports our claim. I think the national media ran for President and OBama who has basically zero qualifications just happened to be along for the ride.

    • Posted By: TJ21 @ 11/05/2008 1:54:28 PM

Apparently you've just started getting involved in this. Go back 8 years ago when Clinton was in office and read some of the articles written about him. The media destroyed him and the republican party went all out against him. This liberal media nonsense kills me. The republican party has to take the hit for many failed policies. Everyone supports the troops but the party in power deserves to get critisized for putting our troops in harms way for a reason they fail to illustrate.

      • Posted By: DWPitts @ 11/05/2008 4:42:41 PM

LOL, so much for the party of personal responsibility, huh?

    • Posted By: sassysissie @ 11/05/2008 2:17:22 PM

The media supports whoever is COOL to support and bags on who ever is COOL to bag on. The political party doesn't matter. McCain just wasn't COOL so they ignored and bagged on his campaign (needless to say he supported Bush more than disagreed). McCain didn't run a very good/ tactful campaign and Obama speaks in rhythms like a preacher (not a bad trait) so Obama had the carisma and the Change behind his voice. What change? I hope it's for the greater good. I support our President even though I didn't vote for him.

  • Posted By: AlVal @ 11/05/2008 2:41:25 PM

I know it is nitpicking at this point, but the Secret Service has completely debunked the claim that someone at a Palin rally yelled "Kill Him!." It didn't happen. So stop trying to make it seem as if they were flanning the flames of hatred in this country. Bill and Hillary Clinton and their supporters were far more negative than McCain/Palin ever were. The truth is, McCain failed in the most important aspect of any campaign: He had the chance to define Obama before Obama defined himself, and he let Obama define him before he defined himself. It was a poor campaign, but not because they flanned any flames of hatred.

Though in the first week following her selection, Palin energized the conservative base of the GOP, she became a serious drag on the ticket
    -----------------------------------------------------
I think she energized the liberal base even more, judging from what she and McCain allowed at their rallies.

    • Posted By: Scorpio-Red @ 11/05/2008 4:42:17 PM

I saw Palin for what she was ..."nothing more than eye candy for the good ole boys" such a disgrace. I am a democrat but I really felt like Mcpain really f** up when he chose Palin. That was the nail in the coffin, but don't worry, we haven't seen the last of her. I think she rather enjoys being in the Hollywood spotlight and I wouldn't be surprised if she left the political arena to get her own "reality tv show". You have mayors and county councilmen (local goverment for all those who don't know) who have a larger governing body than she does and more impact and responsiblity as well. No offense but she is Governor of a wasteland if you look at the per capita population. Geeesh what was Mcpain thinking... but alas I am glad for his continued misjudgement for it only solidified his irrational thinking. I feel sorry for Mcpain (yes I keep saying pain) because I listened to him when he was running against Bush for president and I actually liked his platform. To be honest he reminded more of a Democrat than a Republican, however his time is up and his philosphy and way of thinking is to symbiotic to Mr Bush. That is clearly something this country does not need. I respect him as a veteran and may God bless him but the better candidate one and now it's time to move as one country.....united and ready to get our economy back up to liveable standards and our priorities straight.

It truly amazes me that so many republicans want to blame a so called "liberal" media for John McCain's loss of the presidential election. Simply amazing!! The "main stream media" that republicans accuse of not "vetting" Obama actually spent more time digging into Barak than they did either McCain or Palin. What was the American public more subjected to? Was it Bill Ayers or the Keating 5. Was it Jeremiah Wright or McCain's 1964 DUI car crash that killed a fellow soldier? Was it " is Barak a muslim?" or was it Sarah Palin's considerable ties to the AIG, the group that wanted to part ways with America? Was it "Barak doesn't have enough experience" or was it the fact that Palin as a mayor left a small town over $20 million in debt by the end of her mayoral term? Far more scrutinization went on with Barak Obama than either McCain or Palin.

  • Posted By: rerun51 @ 11/05/2008 9:57:00 AM

Even with all those "mistakes" McCain was able to attract 48% of the popular vote while Obama with all his wisdom got 52%. A shift of slightly over 2% of the electorate would have produced a different result in the popular vote and, possibly, in electoral votes, because the margin was quite slim in serveral states. To an outside observer, like myself, it definitely does not appear to be a landslide victory, or the clear cut national choice many commentators are praising.

    • Posted By: Brooklyn Gurl @ 11/05/2008 11:24:15 AM

Iregardless of what the media said that it was, Guess What? It all boils down to one thing and that is that Obama won! The question now is are you ready for change? Because it is definitely coming.

Well, when you deal w/race every day like you we do, maybe you'd understand that we're trying to get past race, but white people as well all Americans need to get past it too. There are whites that purposely didn't vote for Obama just because he's black and that it's it! You should try putting yourself in other people's shoes, before you make not well thought-out comments. Now if people have VALID reasons for voting or not voting for somebody then ok, but it shouldn't just be about race and if you knew or had any TRUE friends that are Black, which I assume you don't, then you would know that!

There are white people who have been broke and have had to work hard to pull themselves out of poverty. I came from a very small southeastern Kentucky town, was a single mother of three children, drove 45 minutes to work every day and then from work 1 hour and 20 minutes to a college to take night classes 3 to 4 times a week and then a two hour drive back home. I would then prepare my children's lunch and dinner for the next day, do my homework and get a couple of hours sleep before I started over again the next day. I did this until I received my Bachelor's and then my MBA. You can't tell me anything about commutes or poverty, but I made it and now have moved and have a successful career and put two of my children through college, all without any hand outs. I paid for my college and raising my children by working HARD. NOTHING was given to me. If I could do it anyone can, it just takes determination and a will to have a better life. The economy cannot be blamed on one person or one party and we the people have to take some responsibility also. Many took out home loans and moved into homes they KNEW they could not afford. No one could talk me into buying something I knew I could not pay for. I only hope that Obama turns out to be a great president for all our sakes, I would say the same about McCain if he had won. As I have said before, I did not vote the way I voted because of skin color. I voted after researching each candidate's background and politics and whose views and platforms best matched what I have always stood for. I want nothing just given to me, but I also don't want to be penalized because I pulled myself out of poverty and became successful, and I did it by hard work.
Having said all of this, I read these blogs and many people slam the candidates for their negative campaigns but look at what so many of you are doing here. There is name calling and horrible comments about race and gender. There are "personal" verbal attacks. Each person has their own political view and has a right to it whatever it may be, that is what is so great about our country. Yet, we can express those views without being insulting or downright MEAN to another person. We that believe in God can pray that our new President will make the right decisions for our country as a whole and those that don't believe in God can cross your fingers for a hopeful and better future.

For true Christians it is time to live by Jesus one commandment to us His followers of LOVE. We are all forgiven through Christ so let's all make the best of this new day and work to overcome all the challenges that lay a head.

It's not the issue of color, it's the issue of merit, judgment of character, and experience. Obama lacks all of them. The bible also says "A wise man sees evil and flees from it. A foolish man sees evil and goes to it."
Even God himself gets discussed by deceit. By the way, Obama is not evangelical.

      Independant...... please!!!
Welfare is very little of your tax dollar compared to the taxes that go for government ran projects, and Republican Lawyers who try to go after one guy for infidelity , and protect the other guy (guess who) from going to prison for breaking the Geneva convension through torture , illegal wire taps and the list of Self Made Choices that led us to war with a country over WMD that were never found. Matter of fact I see as a real big money sucking tax payer burden to be at war in a country where we were the invaders untill the media and the republicans tried to spin it off as a Liberating, and humanitarian war. So, as invaders, did we have any business putting our puppets in control of their government? Did we have a right to hunt down Hussein and bring him to trial where he was found to be guilty of our imposed values, and put to death? Shouldn't we have found Bin Laden by now seens how he was and still is the biggest threat to the USA?
We need to focus on rebuilding jobs in this country so that we can get tax returns in January and February, where you probably get a mint for your over populating family or 5 or 6 that you claim on your returns.
I've worked hard my whole life as well... Many hours a week. But when the tax break was given to my company to help them move to a cheaper location out of this country, I lost my job, and in the MI economy there were no more shops that were hiring around me, matter of fact the damn places were shutting down and moving. And to tell me about Clinton and NAFTA, We all know that started out as a Republican bill that got passed by republican house and senate.
Point is, we had jobs and even a surplus of money, and we had help for ones who need help, Now judges and other state and federal programs are suffering, and so are good hard working Americans. The war in Iraqu, and the golden parachutes (wich are still going on todays tax dollars) wich helped wreck this economy , are far more costly than the minority of lazy asses on welfare, who by the way, are not exactly living a life of luxery from what I've seen in the inner city.
