It was a beautiful feeling to wake up this morning to find that Obama had truly won the Presidency. I guess the Republicans could not pull a fast one after all. They probably spent all of their money on Sarah Palin's wardrobe.

I agree that the divisive, fear-filled campaign was horrific-the fact that McCain/Palin would not own what they were doing it is ???beyond the pale.??? Twisting the truth as they did implies they believe their constituency is ignorant. Add Palin???s distortion of the 1st Amendment to that-they even managed to instill fear in the opposition as well as undecided voters.

Who benefited from the hate-filled smears? Did it change the outcome? No-it served to divide a nation. Division was being promoted at the worst possible moment in our history. The Rovian power campaign had been chosen by McCain to get him into the White House. America answered that saying ???no??? to another four years like the last eight years.

Moving forward is now our challenge, as we recover from this nasty campaign. It will take time and effort from all. God Bless America.

While I voted for McCain as a military women I will support my C.I.C. because that's my job. My one problem though is that once again the press is slanting this the way the want rather than reporting the truth. I was watching CNN this morning and in 10 minutes I heard the term landslide no fewer than 5 times. He won 52% of the popular vote, that is not a landslide. 60% or more would have been. He won the electoral vote by a landslide, but not the popular vote, there is a distinct difference between the two. Ask anyone that remember the 1960 election that Kennedy won. I wish the best to President elect Obama and I offer my sympathys that his grandmother didn't get to see his moment in the sun. I hope that after today we can all get on with picking up our collective feet and moving forward as a united nation.

Apparently you are missing the significance of the election of the first black US president in history. That he garnered 52% of the popular vote as a non-incumbant in a country which was trully segregated up until recently (and in many cases still is) is nothing short of amazing. Don't like lanslide? Call it a strong showing. But be realistic -- it is an extraordinary achievement.

      • Posted By: beaper @ 11/05/2008 4:36:00 PM

John please, Obama is NOT black. His name was Baraka Hussein and he is by definition only 12 1/2% black. That makes him 87 1/2 Arab and he was a devout Muslim until his wife talked him into "becoming" a Christian in order to run for office. Now, the question of the day is.......do you think a person steeped in the world of Islam, such as he who did this deed for the expediency of his political dreams, will really change over to Christianity? I think not. So, if my premise is right, and it is only my opinion based on logic, well you see where I'm going with this right?

      • Posted By: Transcending @ 11/05/2008 3:01:01 PM

I disagree with what you call significant. You forget he is also half white which makes him also the next white president. You guys need to keep the racism out of it. This is historical and that is great, not trying to take nothing from that. Just wish you move beyond the racism and making a point he is black, since he is also white, not that it should matter anyway.

I disagree with the article saying that the choice of VP was a mistake for McCain. If it had not been for her as VP I would have voted for Obama, although he scares me greatly. McCain did not have a lot of solutions to offer, but his choice of VP brought me on board. I am a strong republican but I was not a suporter of McCain until he made his VP Choice. Second in relation to him not presenting a positive message to the people: The only way a positive message could be presented would have been to lie. I would rather have an honest politician than a liar (Although most politicians are good liars). Apparently McCain was too honest and that counts as a negavive to the news media. I guess that puts the news media and the politicians at the same level of trust.

    • Posted By: kshortSD @ 11/05/2008 1:11:18 PM

Thankfully, most voters didn't respond to the GOP's scare tactics the way you did. I don't understand why you responded better to negative campaigning during these very difficult times. Most of us really needed a positive vision for the future. And now we've got it!

      • Posted By: NLite823 @ 11/05/2008 4:32:35 PM

I can't believe that McCain's VP choice made you get on board w/ his ticket. It definitely deterred me. Ms Palin needs a lot of work before she gets on anybody's ticket again. I recoil recounting those interviews. I feel way better about Joe Biden and I believe Joe will help Obama, along w/his other cabinet members. No man is an island unto himself. Everybody needs help. All Sarah could help McCain do probably at this moment is take in the sites of Russia from her backyard and put on lipstick w/her handy Bulldog at her side.

  • Posted By: lacey123 @ 11/05/2008 3:30:36 PM

Hey lefsaboy, any response to gigglingirl's post? Any answers to any of those questions? If you think McCain is squeaky clean, your head's in the sand. He needs to take responsibility for his failed run at the presidency. You can blame the media, blacks, or anything else you can think of, but HE should be held accountable (he even said so last night!). At last count, 65 million people don't think like you do (thank goodness). Do we have 65 million blacks? Do we have 65 million people who work in the media? 65 million people of all races, religions and party lines voted for Obama because they love this country and want to change it for the better. People from all over the world are saying they see the United States in a different light because we came together as a country. And now it's whether Obama won by a "landslide" or not? You can't accept the fact he won, so it's turned to he didn't win by enought. Get over it. The people have spoken.

    • Posted By: Bob Thomas @ 11/05/2008 4:31:54 PM

Yes, the people have spoken. However, what were the actual choices presented to them? One on the far left who presented himself, during his campaign run, as a centrist, and one that was the beneficiary of a flawed primary selection process.

Iowa and New Hampshire are both questionable venues for the selection of anyone with strong conservative values. In both places, they allow out-of-staters to participate in the selection process. In Iowa, the problem is compounded by the Caucus format, where strong personalities can dominate, and the fact that the region is ethanol dependent. So, if a candidate is questioned about the ethanol industry and responds forthrightly that it is an inefficient way to produce energy, he/she does not stand a chance in the election.

Compounding the process is the left-leaning bias in the mainstream media. By limiting the air time of promising conservative candidates, and instead focusing on Republican candidates that say what the media wants to hear, the mainstream media denies conservatives broad access to the public.

As far as I'm concerned, it was a miracle that the Republican candidate, however honorable, that emerged from this process, was able to garner as many votes as he did.

So, conservatism was not rejected by the electorate, just the candidate that this flawed system produced.

It bears mentioning that I have no ax to grind as far as Senator Obama is concerned. (I would call him President-Elect Obama, except that he won't actually have that title until the electoral college votes in a few weeks.) He is charming, intelligent, articulate, and appears to have a nice family. I wish him great success in what we all hope will be a great Presidency.

I'm only saying that there were a lot of people that could have stood a better chance against him.

    • Posted By: landslideclothing @ 11/05/2008 3:41:42 PM

65 Million people were deliberately deceived by media, or perhaps not all those votes were from living people. ACORN has been documented to fake voting ballots with the signatures of the deceased, those who are incarcerated and those who are illegal in this country. Giving false hope to criminals by promising freedom is malicious. Giving false hope to the Country should be a crime. Obama's cronies swept all his dirt under the rug so well, that even when presented, the people were blind folded to believe that he is a good man. Friends with known terrorists, racist pastors, and not being born in this country tells me only one thing. Not qualified to be President of the United States of America.

      • Posted By: Sparky735 @ 11/05/2008 4:05:46 PM

no some of acorns employees in order to get paid for not do anything, submitted false and fictious voter registrations that were caught by the system. They were required by law to submit them and let the local election officials throw them out. They certainly DID NOT VOTE. Get the facts right.

First, allow me to say that I am an independent voter, so I do not have an allegiance to either party. Some people have said that we've made a tragic mistake in electing Obama as president. I'm sure we'll find the answer in the next four years. It bothers me that some of your charges against Obama are just stupid. The worst thing that Obama can do is start a war, lie to the country, and flush our economy down the toilet. Wait a minute, we've already been through that. For those of you that complain about his inexperience, how can you justify Sarah Palin as a legitimate V.P.? In the past three elections, I have voted for Gore, Bush, and Obama because I thought that they were the perfect candidate they we needed at that time. As a middle-class, mortage-paying independent, McCain was not the right choice for me. I refer to Sen. McCain with the highest respect for what he has done for our country. However, his selection of Sarah Palin and his references to Joe the Plumber ( who turned out to be an idiot), turned me away. If Sen. McCain would have ran his campaign with the respect and class that he showed last night, he could've counted on my vote. So for those of you who insist on complaining about how tragic last night's results were, you should blame Sen. McCain for not displaying the character that made him the Maverick that he truly is. Besides, we're all a part of this great country. If you don't like our new direction, shut up and move to France.

speaking of spelling, bigbluecady, teenage is one word not two. Now, don't you feel stupid for slamming someone else on spelling? Probably not if you were uneducated enough to vote for Obama. Plus, who else in history had to raise that much money to BUY an election?

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 11/05/2008 4:30:27 PM

You McCain voters voted against your own prosperity and the goodness of the nation.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 11/05/2008 4:29:50 PM

When in history were people stupid and hateful enough to vote AGAINST their own prosperity??

  • Posted By: John in Phoenix @ 11/05/2008 2:46:45 PM

Sorry, but landslide does apply. This was a non-incumbent election with the first black candidate in history. Bush referred to his margin vs. Kerry as a mandate, so I have no problem with landslide. Deal with it people. It was a great day in American history, and the beginning of a possible -- and necessary -- realignment within the GOP. Trying to participate in revisionism already is a terrible turn.

    • Posted By: whiterock @ 11/05/2008 2:56:04 PM

Again another reminder...Obama only won the popular vote by 6%...that does not constitute a landslide.

      • Posted By: PresidentObama411 @ 11/05/2008 4:30:10 PM

yep 349 electoral to 173 constitutes a landslide!

Landslide at 52 percent, nope sorry figures do not add up. Maybe your thinking more on 80 / 20 ha ha.
At this point not sure why even addressing since irrelevant. Everybody needs to support our new president.

i think sarah palin is a very intellegent women with strong VALUES and ideas and a great capability of running any office. To her unfair advantage.. she was bashed time and time again, brought through the mud when Obama stood by and allowed his people to do so. (If this was a republican doing this, it would have never survived and deamed to be unfair). The only issue i have with Obama is.. how do we elect a president to be the leader of our country when all his ties are to terrorists and bad associations? When will we know that he makes the correct choices for our country and to protect it as well instead of having close communication with underground leaders?

    • Posted By: kcocinero @ 11/05/2008 4:29:26 PM

I am not trying to attack you on this one but I have to ask what you think about the whole troopergate scandal and how she came out and said that she was glad that the report found her not guilty of any wrong doing when the next day the report was released and said that she had abused her power? I just couldn't get past her quote that " I am going to do whatever I want until the government tells me that I can't." I just don't think that is the kind of leader that we need. Again I am not attacking you. You obviously see something there that I didn't and I am just curious as to what you think about her political conduct.

  • Posted By: cordwainer @ 11/05/2008 4:28:50 PM

Yargo: I absolutely agree with you that people should look for primary sources, not simply believe whatever they see published without verifying it. And it is a shame so much out-and-out slander took place during the election. However, in this case, there is documentation that Palin was an advocate of teaching creationism. As reported in an article in the Anchorage Daily News, during a debate while Palin was running for Governor of Alaska, her reply to a question about teaching creationism was as follows: ???Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject -- creationism and evolution. It's been a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides.??? [October 27, 2006, Anchorage Daily News, "Creation science' enters the race
GOVERNOR: Palin is only candidate to suggest it should be discussed in schools. byline Tom Kizzia.]

The article is available online, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put the URL here; if so, I will post it later. There are other instances where Palin has supported this point of view on the record or in a public forum, and references are available. Whether one agrees with her is another matter - I happen not to - but I do believe no candidate should have to defend constantly against misinformation. Had it been a lie, I would have written in also with evidence to disprove it.

So Palin's support of teaching creationism at least wasn't a blog invention. However, that is not the same thing as Palin saying she herself believes in creationism. She may, and her opinions and upbringing suggest it as a strong possibility, but I haven't read or heard any direct quote from her indicating so, only her support of teaching it as part of a standard curriculum..
    Cheers, KC
