While I voted for McCain as a military women I will support my C.I.C. because that's my job. My one problem though is that once again the press is slanting this the way the want rather than reporting the truth. I was watching CNN this morning and in 10 minutes I heard the term landslide no fewer than 5 times. He won 52% of the popular vote, that is not a landslide. 60% or more would have been. He won the electoral vote by a landslide, but not the popular vote, there is a distinct difference between the two. Ask anyone that remember the 1960 election that Kennedy won. I wish the best to President elect Obama and I offer my sympathys that his grandmother didn't get to see his moment in the sun. I hope that after today we can all get on with picking up our collective feet and moving forward as a united nation.

America is a wonderful place to live and now a man that I believe can help to improve it will soon be at the head of it. The Obama organization got out and signed people up to vote and yes there were more people that voted yesterday than any other time in the history of my country. We should all be proud but we should all remember that President elect Obama will inhereit a mess that may take more than the 4 years he'll get to fix it. We are a and can once again become and remain the mighty country and force we are in the world. It is a wonderful thing to know that this man will do his very best for all the people of this nation and I am proud I voted for him.

Palin was arguably the worst choice for a running mate in recent memory, and Steve Schmidt should have been fired. "The Republican Base," the group to which Palin was supposedly so appealing (Christian/social conservatives for the most part), is rapidly shrinking and probably has a life span measurable in single digit years. McCain's only chance was to appeal to independents, who are not socially conservative as a rule. In the end, he must bare the responsibility for the choice, however, and -- well -- there you have a landslide.

Landslide? He got fewer electoral college voted than Bill Clinton. It was a solid victory, but hardly a landslide. Look at Reagan in '80 or '84 if you want to see what a landslide looks like.

AMERICAN NIGHTMARE - You are right again. People like SNoop Dog (served time and time again in prison), P. Diddy, what does he know about politics while he lavishes on "white meats" using his bling bling, and the likes. Then the TRAITOR OF THE CENTURY IS MR. COLLIN POWELL. YUP! He turned coat and left his old unit and joined the brigades of black voters. In essense he told the republicans, Up your ass*s, blood is thicker than water so I will support this osama dude. Well, at least CONDI RICE held her post and did not give up her republican bosses respect for choosing her for her present job title. As for COLLIN POWELL? You are just another junk yard dog. You ain't worth sh*t. If you would have obeyed what G. Bush Sr. told you to do and knock off Saddam during the Desert Storm, none of these Operation Iraqi Freedom would have to happen. You are no good for a soldier. You are dispicable. You cannot follow orders from your superior who was then the President George Bush Sr. and Sec of Defense Dickhead Cheney. All these are your fault Mr. Powell. You are liable for all these. the AMerican People need to know what you refused to do which could have eliminated these cat and mouse chasing of Saddam Hussein years after. Let the record show it is the FAULT OF COLLIN POWELL WHY SADDAM WAS LEFT TO RULE AND LATER AFTER 1 TRILLION DOLLARS LATER, SADDAM STILL HANG ON A NOOSE JUST THE SAME. GO FIGURE. YOUR FAULT MISTER POWELL

You have got to be kidding me. You blame Colin Powell for the mess Bush has put us in for the past 8 years. Why do you think most of Bush's cabinet left?? Because he was an idiot and now everyone has seen it and know that he is.
Colin Powell is a man just as McCain is of great honor and have both served their country very well. Having a son that has been in the military for the past 19 years, my hats go off to each and everyone of them. They are in my prayers daily.
George Bush is the one that would not listen to anyone with intelligence and is the reason he has cost tax payers trillions of dollars.
I think both Colin Powell and Barak Obama are class acts. I would be proud to be represented by either one of them.
We just all need to be prayerful and hope the next 4 years will show some signs of improvement. No one should expect it to be easy of to see progress overnight, but I am hopeful it will get better for us all.

      • Posted By: watuseeiswatuget @ 11/05/2008 1:45:11 PM

Yup, I served 30 years in the military, not my son, I myself in the Gulf war. Obviously you did not. You have no idea who is to blame for the costs of the Invasiion of Iraq after 9/11. Again, for the record, only if COLLIN POWELL OBEYED what Dick Cheney told him to do, we did not have to go back to Iraq and chase Saddam all over again. But these are classified you you will never know mister. I wish us all the best too.

        • Posted By: mikedun @ 11/05/2008 2:17:34 PM

Your an idiot. I don't believe you have served in the military for 30 years. If you knew this then you know the commander in chief makes the final decision and not a General. The chain of command is sacred. Generals follow orders to a T. That's how they get there.
Bush Sr could have taken out Saddam but that would have caused a political vaccum and inbalance like we are seeing now. At least Bush Sr understoon foreign policy.
The Iraq war is full of lies and false intelligence yet GWB refused to listen to any of it a still waged a police action without explaining the the American peope the real reason of why we went in there again in the first place.

oh you're the idiot. You did not serve one day in the Gulf so what do you know mr. dick? The orders were given from the oval office. I guess you missed that didn't you knucklehead. You jumped into conclusion too fast. Yup. GHWB Sr. ordered for powell to finish the job. powell refused to do the job. He should have been put in General Court Martial. Your own as* would have been court martialed if you refused to do what CINC told you to do? Oh yeah. you would have been hanged next to Saddam or life in prison for disobeying a direct order from the commander in chief. But powell think he is bigger than Bush Senior to be tried on a General Court Martial. You have no clue what you are talking about dude. So if I were you, I'd keep smoking them skunk weed and cheap coke like your new boss barak osama did before. Have at it. get high dude......enjoy your own trip....... don't come back down. Its not for you. stay up there hangin'

        • Posted By: DWPitts @ 11/05/2008 2:28:36 PM

That's flatly wrong. Occupation was never the military objective of Persian Gulf I. Sending the armored cav up the Euphrates Valley was a thing of beauty. Overnight, they swept out of Kuwait, up the valley (it was supposed to be impassable), and surrounded Saddam. That was brilliant. If Deadeye Dick was ordering Gen. Powell to occupy, it was against the coalition charter, the American mandate for action, and the orders of the CiC.

So, given what we know now, I wouldn't be surprised if Cheney attempted such usurption of authority, but it doesn't justify it. Your analysis of what such an occupation would have entailed is also seriously WRONG. Just snap our fingers and it would be great. Why, they may even have welcomed us as liberators with open arms, LMAO. Hindisght is sooo friendly ain't it?

When are we going to stop celebrating wingnut cowboys in this country?

Oh yeah, I do agree that GWB is an idiot. But again, history has written that a direct order was given to Gen. Collin Powell for him to finish the job meaning to go and kill Saddam Hussein during Desert Storm in January 1991. Powell refused to do this (chicken maybe? scared? who knows) but the order was given and powell disobeyed. Now, if powell would have obeyed what Cheney told him to do? We will not have to return to Baghdad 12 years later if Powell would have done what needed to be done during Desert Storm. But no, he disobeyed, so 12 years later, (after a foiled assasination attempt on the old Bush's life?) junior decided to return to Baghdad and kill Saddam so he will no longer be a threat to his daddy's life. Got it so far? Now, to justify going there and getting funding, junior came up with the WMD theory that was never found. By the time the WMB fizzled out, Saddam was already hanged and we are $1Trillion dollars in the hole. Now, again, if powell obeyed his orders, Saddam would not had the chance for evan make an attempt on the seniors life after he left the oval office. Now, you know the truth Sir. Hope it makes sense to you and the rests of the nation including you plwhite.

President elect Obama won because the people of the United States that voted for him chose him of their own free will...The people that voted for him were from all different ages, backgrounds and ethnicity not just the black population...Wake up those of you who still and may never get it...we are one people, one nation under God and that is what this election marks for those of us who get it and want it to be...This election wasn't about black or white it was about the people of the United States wanting a change and the ability to make that change happen...For those of us that voted for President elect Obama we didn't vote for a black President we voted for the person we wanted to see as our next President and leader and that is exactly what he is a PERSON...WHO HAS BEEN ELECTED TO BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES...

    • Posted By: whiterock @ 11/05/2008 2:46:16 PM

Obama did not win by a landslide...he won the popular vote in this election by only 6%. That is not a very wide margin for a man that was competing against a Republican who was following a encumbent president with a 25% approval rating who started a failed war and after a huge stock market crash. Obama also had $100 million more to spend than McCain.

I am tired of reading and hearing about the African American vote!!! HELLO people clearly more than just African americans voted for Barack or he wouldn't be the new president its clearly more whites that blacks.. so evidently he won because he was qualified and no other reasons.. Please Mccain supporters do what he asked you to do suck up your lost and our sweet victory and support your new President..

Qualified? I can't believe the American people were stupid enough to elect a "Muslim" president over a Vietnam veteran POW. What were they thinking? If America doesn't put God back on the throne, it doesn't matter who is president. Our country was founded on religion, one nation under GOD, and have chosen to leave him out of everything. You think we are in a mess, you haven't seen anything yet. It is an OBAMANATION! If you understand what I am saying, and if you don't there is no hope for you either.

As an African American Independent, I have voted for Republicans (Reagan, GWB in 2000) and Democrats (Clinton 92/96). To assume everyone voted for Obama because he is half black says one of two things: either you severely underestimate voters' intelligence or you're an idiot yourself. Whether you acknowledge it or not, he (Obama) inspires hope, confidence that he is capable of effecting change and trust that he has the country's interests at heart. Senator McCain is truly a great American. (but at times seemed at a loss about our economy). America is no longer "Joe the Plumber". You cannot speak to to one section of our populace and expect to win.
Flipping their party coins, Joe Biden does not take away from those things Obama brings to the table, but I cannot say the same about Governor Palin.

i vote the same way you do, but don't you find 95% of the black vote a little high? The increase of black voters who turn out to vote? When I see (on tv) black people who voted just for the President and disregard the rest of the ballot, seems like race was a big motivator. Now I am not saying some of the white votes are not strictly based on race. Honestly, i find those white groups or individuals disgusting. Hopefully this is a huge step for all of us to become united. Please help me understand because i don't believe if Obama was white only the voters would have turned out like they did, nor do I believe 95% would have voted for him. My ignorance might be shining through as I am married in a bi-racial relationship and have grown up with very diverse group of friends. If it is simple racism. How and What do we need to do to make this better?

The republicans have had a good run. You guys have torn down what has taken 100 years to build. Don't blame the democrats for your short comings. You guys created this disaster so you have left the Democrats no alternative but to deal with it and we have by electing Senator Obama the next President of the United States of America. Ahhh....."Democracy", what a sweet, sweet word to my ears.

    • Posted By: bws1971 @ 11/05/2008 2:43:51 PM

Honestly, Brooklyn Gurl, you are breathtakingly ignorant or breathtakingly stupid (or both). If you even tried to really find out why the stock market crashed, you would learn that blame resides squarely at the feet of DEMOCRATS and LIBERAL ideas. Their policies and ideas, over many decades' time, necessitated a subprime industry that wouldn't have existed on anywhere near this scale had government not FORCED the free market to function in ways the free market would not otherwise function.

Subprime -- the bastard child of their own brainchild, a subsidized mortgage industry -- is at the very root of our financial mess.

Oh, and did you know, Brooklyn Gurl, that it was on the watch of President Hoover, the deservedly derided REPUBLICAN president who presided over this nation during the 1929 stock market crash, that TAXES were RAISED, thus ensuring and precipitating the Great Depression that followed -- something that didn't have to happen?

I bet you don't know these things. And, so, you spout on arrogantly and audaciously about the hope your candidate, Barack Obama, will bring to the White House. Yes, he will bring us policies similar to those that gave us the subprime debacle, and he will raise taxes during a moment of economic peril.

  • Posted By: whiterock @ 11/05/2008 2:42:40 PM

Jack Peter - No one has a problem figuring out what Bush did wrong, With a 25% approval rating, I think most of the country knows what he did wrong. This article wasn't about Bush but apparently you can't read.

  • Posted By: gypsy0010 @ 11/05/2008 1:47:49 PM

Contrary to this article, Palin's pick was not a mistake. She isn't perfect but she resonated with main stream Americans far better than McCain. At least she said what she thought, and it was a refreshing break from the other prescripted candidate blather. I think Palin's pick is probably the only thing Mc Cain did right. His leanings to the left cost him with the base and he waited too long to really nail Obama for his economic policies and abysmal voting habits of voting present on anything controversial.

I work for a company in the US that employs people on the higher end of the education scale, a wide range of race, many 1st generation or new citizens, about 50/50 male/female, more than 50% under 35, and a lot of ex-military. They generally trend to the right economically and to the left on social issues. Here is a summary of many lunchtime polls and discussions before the election result:
    1. "I used to like McCain but he just seems a bit too crazy now" - general concensus of older, ex-military types
    2. "Palin only got her first passport a year ago. No way I am voting for her." - from mainly new citizens
    3. "I would not want the first woman in high office to be that sort of woman." - female consensus on Palin
    4. "She's pretty hot though. Don't you think she's hot?" - older male consensus from people leaning towards McCain
    5. "The McCain campaign is just racist, appealing to white people's stereotypes of minorities." - general agreement of all
    6. "McCain is 72. He should have picked a good VP. I would not want Palin in charge." - everyone
    7. "If Collin Powell has endorsed Obama he must be pretty good - or McCain really has lost it." - from military types and older people
    8. "Had McCain picked Lieberman or Romney or - I guess - anyone else I would favor him." - older, white people
    9. "I like Biden. That was a good VP pick." - general consensus
    10. "Palin knows nothing, and everything she says is either an outrageous lie or just another example of her stupidity." - general consensus

The main thing I got from nearly all the people have spoken to is that they started out thinking McCain was good but changed their mind at some point, mainly due to Palin but also the negative/erratic campaign. Almost no-one had much to say about Obama, other than that they thought he was a good speaker. It was all about McCain and Palin.

People go on about the economic situation and how it harmed McCain, but no-one I talked to thought McCain was like Bush, or that Obama would handle it better than McCain. My conclusion from the last 3 months is that nothing kept McCain out of the Whitehouse more than McCain himself and his stupid vp choice.

Isn't it funny how the Democrat Spin Master's comments start out like an infomercial? That starting paragraph says, "Get your boots on people! Here comes some more BS!" Great VP choice? Are you kidding me?! Who was stealing plays from which party? Young Presidential candidate. Old Washington insider. I'll give you "Change Believers" a hint and it starts with B and ends with a ush - Cheney. I fear Washington politics as usual will continue and the only change will be that it will shift "left".

I hope the voting public will be smart enough to clean house and vote out incumbents if partisan politics continues. The President Elect's speech left me hopeful. Now, the Dems will have to deliver. They won't be able to blame the Republicans any longer. Good Night and Good Luck!

To Concerned (more like scarred) parent:

The Media probably was dragging down the McCain-Palin ticket because the same ticket was mudslinging at their opponent during the last stretch of the election, hoping to win off of fear. And yes, there may be African Americans that voted Obama just because he too was part African American. But this blade cuts both ways: there were also some Whites that did not vote Obama because he was part African American. Not all blacks were educated on the issues of the election; at the same time, NOT ALL WHITES WERE EDUCATED ON THE ISSUES OF THE ELECTION!!! Some blacks tried to justify their votes with media b/s. SOME WHITES TRIED TO JUSTIFY THEIR VOTES WITH MEDIA B/S!!!! Ignorance affects ALL RACES!!!

  • Posted By: sassysissie @ 11/05/2008 1:42:06 PM

I disagree that Palin was a bad choice for VP. I believe she was the right choice. She lacked many years political skills and has fight in her with the ability to compromise for the greater good. Not having tons of political experience combined with a backbone makes her able to stand on her own two feet and not be bullied by hard core liberals and extreme conservatives. Palin is also a down to earth mom who knows what it is like to be a working mom. Being a MOM is very difficult and you have to be willing to say NO!
I do agree that the campaign went very wrong. I was watching it unfold and saying to myself, "They need me to step in and show them how to run this campaign. I don't have any political experience and see that they are not doing very well."

    • Posted By: kshortSD @ 11/05/2008 1:58:59 PM

You seem to be the epitome of the lazy voter. If you really vote for someone because they "are just like me", then you are doing your country a great disservice.

Then 95% of black people voted the wrong way

    • Posted By: gigglinggirl @ 11/05/2008 1:56:09 PM

The polls and, more importantly the voters, showed that Palin was a very bad choice for McCain. The idea that being a "good Mom" and "putting your foot down, and saying no" somehow qualifies as being US President-material seems to indicate that anyone who is a good Mom, and a disciplinarian is fit to be President! Obviously, that is false. Palin told Larry Kudlow that she didn't know what the job of VP involved two full weeks before she was picked. Two months later, when a third grader asked her the same question, she still didn't get the answer right! That, along with the other answers about Russia's proximity to Alaska, and "commanding the Alaska National Guard" (which other Governors have admitted is a merely ceremonial part of the Governor's duties), as being equal to "foreign policy experience" showed that John McCain's judgment had to be questioned.

If you truly think that Palin could have been President if the need arose, think about this: If Palin had been just another candidate running for the Republican ticket during the primaries, do you think she would EVER have won a single primary, after debating (among others) Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Guiliani, Ron Paul, and, oh yes....John McCain???? Then, to hear her go out and bash Obama, who had not only debated, and eliminated all of the Democratic rivals for President, and (by the way) garnered approximately 20 million votes, (not to mention his Harvard Law Degree, etc., etc., ) that he was LESS qualified to be President that she was, made it obvious that this gal had more confidence than sense. She was definitely the WRONG choice. And the fact that she gets her kids to bed on time (or whatever else you consider "putting your foot down") just doesn't cut it as qualifying her to be the leader of the Free World!

Change for the better? We will see. This country has become a disgusting nation whose majority is now made of lazy, immoral, arrogant beggars. With liberals in control, this will not improve. The glory, patriotism and promise of a better life that America once possessed have passed.

  • Posted By: delighted Parent @ 11/05/2008 2:34:15 PM

I think the better man won end of story. also the media didn't have to do too much to show Palin ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. The SNL skits were dead on.

  • Posted By: **steve** @ 11/05/2008 2:33:53 PM

What went wrong was that we were railroaded by a media who refused to scrutinize Obama, while ripping McCain/Palin a new one at every opportunity. If they had, things would be different this morning. I hope I am wrong, but I think that we are all in for a rough 4 years.
