This comment is for the haters...Get over it! I'm sure that your asses weren't this bitter when Bush cheated his way into to office back in 2000. Hell no you weren't and the reason he served a second term was because he screwed up so badly that he was given the benefit of the doubt to try and clean it up. I'm happy as hell that President-Elect "Barack Hussein Obama" is going to be the new face in the Wihite House!!! He ran one hell of a campaign, worked hard and had the financial backing to want to take a job more difficult than any other job in the world. Any man or woman for that matter who is willing to take the risk to clean up the gigantic mess Bush created, deserves all of the credit one could give. My hat goes off to you Mr. Obama and I'm extremely proud to have you as our next commander in chief...JOB WELL DONE!

You need to take the turban off your head so your brain can get some air. Hussein Obama will lead this country straight to hell in a handbasket.

I knew the ignorant statements regarding Obama's win were bound to emerge eventually. He wasn't voted in only by "blacks who want to see a black in the white house" but by every race who is sick and tired of watching republican'ts ruin this country.

  • Posted By: Brooklyn Gurl @ 11/05/2008 2:15:33 PM

My question is simple; How could anyone who voted for George Bush have anything negative to say about the coming Administration. No one ever could be as dumb as George Bush is other than the people that put him in the White House the first two times.

  • Posted By: jrheller21 @ 11/05/2008 2:14:17 PM

If we must lable Obama, we should call him BI-Racial. Calling him AfroAmerican continues the historic separation of the races and it's divisive.

like it or not obama is going to be our next president all we can do now is pray for him that he will quide our nation in the right direction

I believe that their was such a strong head wind that no Republican had a chance. I have been a
Republican for many years and have been sadened by the errosion of the party in recent years.
McCain was certainly the best candidate in my opinion. However, I do belive that Palin was the
best running mate he could have chosen. The campaign was totally dead until she came along.
Had they let her have free reign and not held her in I think they would have done better; though,
as I said, no Republican had a real chance this year. I do believe that she is one of the new
bright lights in the party. She gives me hope that this party can be rebuilt into the great party
    that it once was.

Looks like some people didn't even read the article and instead went straight to comment on how 'dumb' they think the greater majority of our country is.

You can blame it on young people, minorities, or whoever you like; but it is what it is. McCain did a terrible job on his campaign, and it showed in staggering numbers. If you're going to comment, at least stay on topic.

    • Posted By: sassysissie @ 11/05/2008 2:11:56 PM

I didn't vote for Obama, I do agree that the McCain campaign was terrible, and I do support our new President, who I hope makes the right changes for the better good of our soldiers and country.

  • Posted By: bitterblogger @ 11/05/2008 2:10:47 PM

Mistake-filled as McCain's campaign was, I think recently the worst campaign was run by Bush 41, who squandered extremely high approval ratings in 1991 after the successful Gulf war to, in less than 18 months, a thumping at the hands of Clinton. Breaking his 'no new taxes' pledge was the first of many missteps.

  • Posted By: joiedevivre @ 11/05/2008 2:10:46 PM

The worst campaign ever? I guess you haven't been around long enough, Julian. How about Mondale, Carter, Gore, Kerry! Nothing to critisize there, eh? We do still have time until January 20 to dump on Bush, McCain and Palin, but sooner or later the time for talk will be over. It'll be time to stand and deliver with no more excuses.

  • Posted By: langonefl @ 11/05/2008 2:09:38 PM

We the people won the election, Thank God for America. It is about time religion gets out of our elections. I am sick of race, born agains and abortion being traded for votes. I never thought I i would vote for a person of color, and I am happy I did. Finally a young educated inteligent person is my President.

  • Posted By: VAreader @ 11/05/2008 12:51:22 PM

I belive this writer is absolutely on the money. I am a middle of the road conservative who wound up eventually voting for Obama for all the reasons he cited. The other comments that I have read here obviously came from far right conservatives who would have voted for McCain anyway. He shot himself in the foot by picking Sarah Palin to try an asuage them. He should have been trying to retain my vote, not theirs. Joe Lieberman would have been a good choice. The majority of voters in this country fall somewhere in the middle. Obama realized that, and he played to them - to us. And he got our votes, and he won! The Republican Party needs to acknowledge this and do something about it.

    • Posted By: AllenWH @ 11/05/2008 2:09:24 PM

Among many well thought-out posts here, yours comes closest to my own view. Also a conservative, with a much in common with Senator McCain (family tradition of military service, career military and two tours in Vietnam myself) I was going to vote for him until he picked Sarah Palin. He sold out his principles (in my opinion) to appeal to a party "base" of ignorant, intolerant and enthusiastic (a scary mix) of anti-science religious fundamentalists. I hope that description has not descended to the level of name-calling, but that's how I see it. Meanwhile, Senator Obama, when inaugurated, will himself be the first of the changes he has promised and he will be my President, too. I wish him, and our country, fair winds and following seas.

  • Posted By: John Wilson @ 11/05/2008 1:13:30 PM

John McCain lost by such a big margin because he forgot about the independent voters who helped him win his party's nomination. His biggest mistake was to try to win the support of the conservative base at the expense of the independent voters by bringing in Sara Palin.Clearly the conservatives belong to the past and not the future of American politics. He should have stuck to his original campaign message.

    • Posted By: kshortSD @ 11/05/2008 2:06:17 PM

You're very right. He is so out of touch with this changing nation that he actually thought he could win the election by wooing the conservative right and the "white working suburban middle class". Hopefully, he has now realized that our country is made up of many different groups than that! What an idiot...

  • Posted By: Boogaloo @ 11/05/2008 1:05:43 PM

She always looks pretty, just like Mrs. McCain.

    • Posted By: HurleyOkeiffe @ 11/05/2008 1:12:31 PM

      I don't vote for "pretty"

      • Posted By: gypsy0010 @ 11/05/2008 2:05:39 PM

Good, don't vote for "pretty", vote for gutsy. As a member of the press without a leftist agenda. I've been appalled by their treatment of Palin. One example is the ET special the night before the election on her clothes versus Michele Obama. It was a total flip-flop from an earlier article calling Michelle the new Jackie Kennedy because she favored up and coming designers. Does Michelle wear clothes off the rack? Sure but J. Jill etc is more Norstroms to Macys, certainly not Wal-Mart off the rack. It was total bias.

My first introduction to Palin was well before her pick as VP when she took on Washington over the idiots who wanted to call a plainly burgeoning polar bear population a declining one. I also ran across other previous articles on her work against the good ole boy network in Alaska state government. Given a chance to learn the Washington game she'd have been an excellent counterbalance to tiberal republicans.

All we can do is hope for the best now. McCain and Obama both have good qualities, but as a member of the armed forces, I have to say I am nervous about having Obama as a Commander-In-Chief. Democrats always weaken and reduce the military strength and usually take a more defensive approach in military functions; that is not wise. That will leave the American people exposed and vulnerable. What then liberal democrats?

    • Posted By: DWPitts @ 11/05/2008 2:04:28 PM

Further, who were the commanders in chief during WWI and WWII? You really want to critize the way those wars were handled? Go right ahead, lmao. Guess you prefer this current debacle we're in now and Vietnam, huh?

Wars are effective, if first, there is no other option, and second, if the underlying action is conducted for the defense of something honest. Overt acts of aggression (which you imply in your post) almost always end badly for the aggressor. In essense, fighting for something, instead of against something, is a defensive action on its face.

Better get those war college blue books out again chief and do some more reading.

Oh, btw, Gen, George Patton was my grandmother's cousin, so you may want to rethink that nonsense about political party being an indicator on how to wage a campaign once it starts, lol. I'm with Old Blood and Guts, "Let the other SOB die for his country", lol.

    • Posted By: DWPitts @ 11/05/2008 1:49:53 PM

US Military expenditure exceeds the combined military budgets of the rest of the world (by far). Even under Clinton this was true. Reality is coming home to everybody based on the events of the last 8 years. Why should the military get a pass, when the rest of us are going to have to sacrifice. You do realize the military budget being negotiated now is for $1 trillion? The next highest expenditure is Russia, who currently allocates approximately $44billion for defense. How much more do you need, so you aren't afraid?

Currently, we are using our military like a police force, instead of the highly mobile, quick strike force it was designed to be. Seems to me, we need to make much better strategic decisions on how, and when, to deploy our forces in the future. This seroiusly needs to be addressed.

However, I hope the invitation is extended to Colin Powell to be the next Secretary of Defense. We do need to re-supply, get our men and women back on rational rotations, and ensure we have the best, most modern equipment for our defense. Based on how Gen. Powell executed during the first Persian Gulf War as head of the Joint Chiefs, I believe him to be the best man for the job.

That action was a shining example of how and when to deploy and use American force.

Apparently the rest of the military does not share your concern. They donated to Obama over McCain 4:1.

    • Posted By: MissNoVa @ 11/05/2008 1:34:26 PM

Apparently others in the military disagree with you; they donated to Obama 4 times more than to McCain.

Some of the comments I've read here are totally unbelievable. Comments made out of fear, bigotry and ignorance. 65,000,000 people voted for Barack Obama to be OUR President...what is it about that you don't understand? Can 65,000,000 people be so misled, all at one time, as some of you seem to think? You lump everyone together, not knowing anyone's circumstances in life. I'm a working, white female, middle class person who goes to work every day, raised a 25 yr. old, college educated, daughter by myself. I voted for Bush twice, but voted for Obama yesterday. How would you label me? I got really tired of working my butt off every day, and have less and less to show for it, while jobs are being lost/shipped overseas, huge corporations that keep getting their tax relief, CEO's of these companies getting millions of dollars to just go away after they run their companies into the ground, while we middle class workers get the shaft. You people who are anti-Obama....did you bother to actually LISTEN to his speech last nite? I doubt it. But during the next few days, try to get a tape of it, put your fears and bigotry aside (for just a minute, anyway) and really listen to what he said. I'm not a stupid person because I voted for Obama. I'm willing to give him a chance to turn this country around. Did you listen to McCain's concession speech? Get a tape of that while you're at it. No bitterness or regret, but he DID urge everyone to support our new President. That's what needs to happen now. Don't you get it?

I need to add that we do need change, but we need change to be clearly laid out. Not just a hard left turn from our overly hard right turn (Bush). The war needs to end, we need to avoid rasing taxes on those who employ (small business to medium businesses), not add to our debt by increasing wellfare, help those over 65 (Reform Medicare: reduce the drug pushing and push for proven wellness care (chiropractic, naturopathy, etc) that prevents health issues and lowers the cost to tax payers, and finally to say that there should be a flat tax scale with 6 levels that range from 0% to 10%. I will have more details in my Blog.
P.S. I am a single working mom; works full time, with a child , and going to school full time. There should be NO excuses except laziness.

  • Posted By: MissNoVa @ 11/05/2008 2:02:36 PM

Okay, let's break down some of these downstream arguments with some added facts.
    1. 9/11 and the war assisted in Obama's win.
    2. Bush started the war in Iraq.
    3. Bush took a vacation the entire month of August 2001 to go clear brush in Crawford, and would not allow his advisors to come tell him about the memos stating that bin Laden intended to strike the US using airplanes, and that security advisors were reporting that the "chatter" they were hearing suggested that a strike could happen soon.
    4. Over 70% of the electorate stated in recent polling they disapproved of Bush and didn't like the direction the country was going.
    5. Bush was not responsible for the GOP defeat.

With logic like that, it's no wonder you think Palin was an "excellent VP pick."

As a European born citizen, my biggest concern was - and is - to restore our standing in the world. My trips abroad in the last years have not been joyful. The world still looks at us as the spiritual leader of the free world, with high ethical values.
The current administration has not only destroyed that image; people "on the street" in countries that are our classical allies are downright disgusted about us.
i know it will take time to restore that image. If there is anybody who can do that, it is Barack Obama.

    • Posted By: HurleyOkeiffe @ 11/05/2008 2:01:56 PM

Thank you! I agree! Maybe Obama will be able to restore our damaged reputation with the rest of the world. Our president represents us as a nation....and I am tired of looking like a fool, because of our current monkey president! Palin would have made us look even worse! That woman is a complete idiot...My dog would have made a better running mate than her!

Barak Huessein Obama is a mulatto.See the dictionary.Stop the lies.

    • Posted By: tingaling @ 11/05/2008 1:29:34 PM

Using the term mulatto is along the lines of calling people colored. It is an old fashioned deragatory word. Why not call him biracial, mixed race. Why troy out the word with the demenaing connotation.

      • Posted By: Durham Reader @ 11/05/2008 2:01:54 PM

I believe this comment by "Rayman" is posted using a derogatory term because that is his intent... to slur and demean the presedent-elect.
