Palin was certainly not McCain's first error. That distinction goes to his whoring himself out to the agents of hate he'd rebuffed when he ran his noble 2000 campaign.

What went wrong? John McCain isn't an africian american.

Maybe it's time that American people grew up and started to realize that there's only one race: HUMAN! The rest is all just gift wrap and not about what's inside the person or how good a job they can do, etc. I'm not African American, and I'm smart enough to recognize what kind of President we would have had in McCain. While he may be a hero from the POW days of Vietnam, he also graduated 4th from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy, (in contrast to Obama who graduated summa *** laude from Harvard), and his record in the Senate and Washington was not that stellar, or the GOP would have been talking about that than his hero status from 'Nam. Personally, the idea of Palin as President gave me nightmares, because she's even less qualified than McCain.

Let's make an effort to move past all the racial b.s., and the partisan nonsense, and try to work together to fix the enormous problems facing this country and it's peoples of ALL groups, and stop wasting our energy rejecting someone because of race or ethnic origin. As Martin Luther King observed over 50 years ago, "Unless we learn to work togetherr as brothers, we will all perish together as fools!"

All we can do is hope for the best and pay attention to what is going on at Capitol Hill. I do agree though....Bush was a little...off sometimes...way off.

To make Joe the Plumber your main reason for running for president, when it already was established that #1 he was no active plumber, that he was behind in his tax payments, that he was not licensed and that he had no means whatever of buying out "his boss". Made it a rediculous campaign issue. It became just another laughing issue like lipstick on a pig. Unless your I.Q. was 90 and below, you had no chance to convince anyone. If you had used anything similar to your gracious concession speech, you might had won an election.

    • Posted By: goindy @ 11/05/2008 1:46:14 PM

Regardless of the circumstances in Joe the Plumber's personal life, the major point was the issues raised with Obama's tax plans and his liberal views on the role of government in the economy. You can allow yourself to get bogged down in the particulars of some plumber's life, but we vote on the issues, right?

Worst campaign ever? Are you kidding me?

The fact McCain kept it reasonably close against all the obstacles he faced was incredible. I won't repeat them all, as several other posts already do below. But a much disliked incumbent, an unpopular war (supported by most elected officials in both parties), and an economy going into the toilet (which was frankly the fault of both parties), made this an uphill battle from the start.

Worst campaign ever? Does Newsweek own any 8th grade Civics books? How about mssive landslides that defeated Goldwater in 64, McGovern in 72, Mondale in 84? How about Alf Landon in 36 -- getting killed by Roosevelt even though, honestly, there had still not been much recovery from the Depression; how about Dewey in 48 running against a purportedly unpopular President in Truman, plus a Democratic Party that fractured at also nominated Strom Thurmond for the Dixiecrats/State's Rights Party and Henry Wallace for the left leaning Progressives?

Let's hope he doesn't get assassinated like JFK. God that would be bad???. That would trigger a racial conflict across the nation. Who knows, maybe that would even trigger a series of events that would lead to a civil war.

Democracy aint it great , what the majority wants it gets . The truth is , and most right wing wackos dont want to hear it is, their base is shrinking constantly . George Bush , Mr. jesus himself did this for the Republicans . he has singlhandedly ruined America with his head in the sand management style.

CHECK THIS OUT! The collapse of Wall treet, the spiral spin of the Real Estate market, and the flat spin of the AIg, Lehman Brothers, etc, were all staged acts smoothly directed by the Demoncrats. Yup! How can all these crap fall just two months before the Presidential elections? these were craftily maneuvered by the big directors from the Hill, ex: Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Hilary Clinton. these people are so powerful, they can direct anything they want to do and people will either disappear if they don't do it or to stay alive, will do it. Not one of you smart ass*s ut there figured this out? C'mon, wake up and smell the coffee. It's all staged to make John McCain look real bad, while GWB reacted to make things worst by spending $380Billion of Tax payers monies and all hell broke loose. Not one of you saw this coming? Why did Alan Greenspan not offer one comment on any of thes bullcrap? He knows it's a scheme from the majority leaders of both house and senate. He wants to stay alive, Duh?

I disagree that Palin was a BAD choice. She was the BEST choice. She didn't have very much political experience so that made her desirable to me as a VP. She didn't have the history of screwing up and being bullied by hard core liberals and she did fight BIG Oil.
The campaign however, is another story. They did a terrible job.

"odds stacked against the Republicans?" Truth is, the Republicans were stacked against their record.
This was not a case of "bad luck". This was evidence and the consequence of failed policy, abhorrent
    leadership and unmitigated greed.

I could have been a person that might have been persuaded to vote for John McCain up until a few months ago when he betrayed his integrity and went "Rove." The final straw however was Palin. My god what an embarassement to ALL Americans and what a mistake by McCain. However, class act in his concession speech last night. Sad that so many in the audience could not share in his example.

The ultra religious right wing destroyed John McCains candidency. They had nothing to offer and took advantage of John McCains popularity to advance their agenda.Thank the good lord, they did not succeed.I voted for Obama but I don't think McCain deserved such an election defeat.

"Loved by the media?" What a joke! He and Palin were lambasted at every opportunity. I have no more faith in news media. My confidence is lost forever.

then what are you doing reading this? idiot.

  • Posted By: jjdub9913 @ 11/05/2008 1:31:05 PM

Rayman, you keep inserting irrelevant comments about Barak Obama being mulatto. why? what does have to do with anything about how this election was won by him, or his creditials, or even valid points his opposers made against him. You're riduculous, and one of these people who revel in foolishness & chaos when things dont go your way. Use your eyes to see what is the character of a man, rather than what color is his skin or ethnic background. I am 100% black man, and yes i did vote for Obama. But I also realized last night what a quality man and decent Republican John McCain truly was with his tremendous concession speech. Wake up and pay proper attention, you miss the boat by a mile

Glad this is an opinion piece. The last line, "finally come to an end" shows the bias in this article. McCain gave a valiant effort against almost impossible odds. He represented a party that has a very unpopular President sitting in office. He is facing a candidate that is powerful in his ability to communicate and cast vision; not to mention a landmark historical moment. Palin was not a bad decsion, she gave the candidate a boost. McCain was not motivating the party core and would have been beaten by 15 points if it were not for Palin. She had some very bad moments in the public media. Yet, she drew enormous crowds at her rallies and gave McCain a chance. Remember after her addition to the ticket the race was a virtual tie. It was the financial melt down that finished the McCain ticket not Palin. Specifically, how Bush handled the crisis once again doomed Republicans and McCain. Waltzing out on the steps of the Capitol with a two minute fear speech and refusing to answer questions sealed the fate of McCain and the Republican Party in this election. McCain gave a good effort, he got beat by a better politician and a better organization. His own party and siting President put him in a big hole. As for Palin she was just starting to come to her own, I think she will be a star in the Republican Party in years to come.

It wasn't the campaign or Palin that messed things up for McCain. It was Bush and his administration screwing up our country. McCain seems like a good guy, but most people realized that his ties to the current republican party could be a potentially dangerous thing.
I'm not some raging liberal. I have voted for republican candidates in the past. Though this time we needed a Change.

All I can say is you "reap what you sow" Republicans. This outcome almost makes us forget how the Bush family "stole" the election in 2000 and used fear ie: the war and gay marriage to win in 2004. Hopefully the Obama and his advisors can undo the major mess that the Bush presidency left behind

I dissagree with the comment that Obama was elected by the educated majority. He was elected by our young people from 18 to 35.. Not by the people that actually toil in this country, pay bills and half their income in taxes. I have yet to see a college grad now a days that actually gets dirty and work hard like their parents and grand parents. The computer is their only asset.

I don't know where you live, but I'm 35 and have owned my home for 10 years and DO pay taxes and work hard - along with so many others in my age group. It is people like you that generalize an entire group of americans as deadbeats that makes us stand up and exercise our right to vote. The great thing about this country is that the vote of 18-35 year olds holds exactly the same weight as other age groups. You are the type of person that young america despises - don't be surprised if your younger family members shove you in a nursing home in a few years.

It was plain to see that he was doing too much bashing, and besides, the media was also spending more time favoring obama than mccain, that was plain to see. How can a candidate win an election when the media is favoring one candidate over the other.
