Hey Izme; Palin may have almost pulled this race away from Obama but Obama defintely took this race away from Palin.

    • Posted By: izme @ 11/06/2008 10:46:33 AM

True, but remember, Obama is a male and an African American. Two major obstecles to compete with. AND the media was abusive, intimidating and cruel to Palin. Hopefully in a few more years America will progress in its human right treatment of women in this country. America doesn't silent women by making them wear a veil, but they do silence them by public humiliation, embarrassment, intimidation and emotional and mental abuse.

      • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 11/06/2008 11:02:31 PM

Palin burst onto the national scene in St. Paul, Minnesota where she said: "I'm not going to Washington to seek your good opinion." She didn't make it to Washington, thanks to the media, who are a bit tougher than Sarah Palin.

Palin had her chance and blew it. Good riddance to Sarah Palin.

      • Posted By: TerriT @ 11/06/2008 11:10:33 AM

Palin faced no more scrutiny than any other unknown would have entering this race .. male or female. She could have become the media darling very easily, but she was completely unprepared for the office she was seeking. She could not or would not become conversant on the issues facing America (other than talking points repeated over and over ad nauseum) and her inability to form a coherent sentence turned her into a joke. She was too arrogant to admit what she didn't know and make the attempt to learn. I don't blame the press ... had Obama made the gaffes and run the campaign that McCain/Palin did, the press would have laid into him, too. He didn't. He was a class act the whole way.

        • Posted By: izme @ 11/06/2008 12:27:22 PM

In the "edited" interviews, Palin knew that no matter how she answered a question it would be spun in a negative way against her. The whole object of the press was to make her look dumb. It is a real shame that America, the country that is supposed to be SO advanced in human rights for women, actually treated Palin and Clinton with the most horrible injustices. They focused on petty issues just like they did way back when Farraro ran for VP. Not seeing much progress for women there. Looks like the "boys club" in Washington just doesn't want a woman in the Oval Office. Hmmmmmmmmm

          • Posted By: eagles1776 @ 11/06/2008 3:29:52 PM

I saw what I saw and I didn't see much in Palin except a voice that sounded like fingernails on a chalk board, someone very ill prepared for the office she sought, and someone who could insite the crowds but couldn't intellegently talk issues. She was a poor choice and I hope the GOP realizes that in the future.

          • Posted By: TerriT @ 11/06/2008 12:42:16 PM

Well, I watched her debate and she pretty much spoke the same way she did in the interviews. She had her talking points, but when she tried to deviate from that, it was not pretty. Palin may be ready down the road - she was not ready now. Her "give me the talking points and I'll wing it" attitude may have worked in tiny Wasilla and in the State of Alaska, but it didn't translate to the national stage. And, in all fairness, it is true that with any substance whatsoever, she would have been the media darling. She's cute and sassy and the press and the public eats that up. There was just no substance there.

I don't know what you are talking about when you say McCain was negative and "tried" to connect Obama to Ayers. He WAS connected to him!! As always though, people don't like to hear THE TRUTH! Yes, Obama is charasmatic, but actions will speak louder than words.

    • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 11/06/2008 10:55:46 PM

Serving on a board does not 'connect' one to other board members. Your unsophisticated view of the corporate world is silly.

    • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 11/06/2008 5:10:23 PM

You are aware that Lenore Anonanberg (Spelling?) who funded Ayers was a supporter of McCain and donated to his campaign. Also McCain donated over $450K to Kalidi. The republicans that I know mentioned McCain's negative attacks as on of the reasons they decided to vote for Obama and the fact that not only did McCain make these negative attacks but he did so while being connected to some of the same people, which is really just stupid. Another reason they sited was his pick of Sara Palin.

These 4 individuals have been life long republicans. One was my 89 yr. old employer, this man is extremely wealthy and has never ever considered voting anything but Repbulican.

    • Posted By: Brooklyn Gurl @ 11/06/2008 12:39:23 PM

McCain should have been more concerned about his connection to George W Bush. That is eventually what brought him down.

If you didn't witness angry, scared, mean and lynch mob, search youtube for Palin rallies in Pottsville, PA. It was reminiscent of the KKK of the 50s and 60s. Truely amazing, in the very worst way.

  • Posted By: PJC27 @ 11/06/2008 9:33:01 PM

McCains campaign went south after he uttered the words our economy is strong.
Palin was a suprise, but once vetting began, she showed to be not only uneducated and unprepared for even the office she holds, but for the position of town mayor.
Add to that the witch doctor, the creation science, the extreme right views on abortion...
All while McCain jumps hiter and yon is his stop and go campaign.
Then the hate began, and as someone from PA I watched closely as they rural community responded with racism I have never before witnessed (that legacy continues here...).
Yes, the absolute worst. Truely sad legacy left here in PA in this historic moment hate and racial bias was hightened by McCain/Palin beleivers.

  • Posted By: sistersuperior @ 11/06/2008 9:24:12 PM

McCain's choosing Palin as his vp was not just one mistake in a long list of others. This action was reckless and if things played out differently, could have placed this country in jeopardy. Fortunately, the american electorate was more on its toes than ever before and McCain was stopped. A real Maverick, maybe. A real patriot, not in my book.

Brooklyn Gurl, you are the one who need a reality check. Welfare is collected by mostly blacks and just look at the jails and prisons. They are filled with blacks. ANd that's a fact. You may need to go back to college and take a statistics class and do some research on your welfare facts.
You are in the NAACP la la land.

Hello, white trash piece of ignorant ***. Yeah, Obama is sure in prison, ain't he? Maybe there is a reason why "blacks" are in prison, and it ain't none no that they are stupid violent hicks, either. Maybe it is because of KKK, cow-humpin', cousin marryin' rednecks like you that are clueless and USELESS to our world and to the very words of Jesus, that you lost, moron. Go back to humpin' cows, my friend. You Betcha!!!

Get ready to support your new president, Barack Obama, so we can All as a human race get back to living like an American and the economy can turn around.

    • Posted By: branwenofeire @ 11/05/2008 5:07:53 PM

whiteandproudofit: I call bullshit. Prisons, according to the latest figures from the November Coalition, are predominantly white, with blacks and Hispanics in the minority.
BrooklynGurl, for chrissakes, drop the race card already before you cut yourself. Obviously "whiteandproudofit" has no damn clue what the minorities of *any* group went through after Katrina. Clearly, she had the ability to get the hell out of Dodge, as it were. Thousands didn't. And those "free trailers"? They were *garbage*. Flimsy, poorly constructe, and completely permeable to the weather.

    • Posted By: Brooklyn Gurl @ 11/05/2008 4:24:49 PM

Whites constitute the majority of welfare recipients while Blacks and Hispanics make up the rest. Jails were built for the black man and until he decides that he no longer wishes to participate in a form of legal slavery than he will continue to be jailed. It is unfortunate that the brothers know not the power that they hold. But I am going to keep on praying and believe that GOD will contine to bless them as he has done for me and you..

I disagree strongly. According to your revisionist logic, John Kerry lost because he was swift-boated. B.S.! John Kerry lost because while he gave us a million and one reasons not to to vote for G.W. Bush, he gave us no reason to vote for John Kerry, other than the fact that he served as a Jr. Officer in an ancient war. A less than spectacular strategy for Rebulicans in 1992, 1996, and 2008. I took Kerrry's advice in 2004. I didn't vote for Bush; I stayed home on ecection day. I blame Bush's victory in 2004 on Kerry's candicacy. (i.e. I would have voted for a Democrat who gave me one G.d.mn reason to vote for him),

Why would you think they were poor choices? He is a grown man and had options. What he didn't have was the support of an unbiased media campaign. That crew on CNBC are the most appaling reporters I have ever heard.

Not once was anything that Mr O'bama was aked to give a straight answer to, answered. I am struggling with the decision that was made based on a cheerleading agenda. "GET TO THE MASSES". and put a less than honest man into office.

I was always taught we have to respect our President but guess he needs to earn mine. What I hope is that every Republican in office holds him to his promises. He made way to many lets see how he performs and how many he will leave on the curbside. I can point out alot of welfare fraud right in my small town America and he is going to reward the welfare scammers even more.

I am flat broke, closed my corporation and will wait out his Presidency.

Politicsgirl: I live about 65 miles from New Orleans in an area that was effected by Katrina but we didn't whine, we got out of town when we were told to evacuate and fixed our houses when we got back. The blacks in New Orleans are still whining and didn't leave when they were told to. FEMA gave most of them more money than their houses were worth and there are those who got a free trailer to live in and just got put out of them a few months ago. They were living better than they did before the hurricane. Bush helped them alot. I wonder if that will matter to someone like Brooklyn Gurl? I think all she cares about is the black cause not the human cause. That's obvious by her comments.

I don't know if your life or financial means has ever gotten you out of the back woods "White N Proud of It" but you can't stereotype a race of people. There is more to African American class structure than New Orleans , just like I assume every person in your community is not a racist, uneducated red neck, who has never been 100 miles outside of his hometown. My goal here is not to upstage your apparent lack of class and possible minimal educational background . But do yourself a favor... turn your cable channel to something other than Field and Stream and Nascar.... and live a little and broaden the ole grey matter....if the moonshine has not pickled it along with your liver. • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/05/2008 5:18:45 PM

He did not win solely on the AA vote. He received about 43% of the white vote. Without the almost unanimous support of AA's he would not have won the election. Nothing wrong with that. He ran a great campaign but the facts are the facts.

      • Posted By: joe_mama @ 11/05/2008 8:47:30 PM

        Let's see....
43% of Whites voted for Obama...
67% of the Latino population voted for Obama...
62% of the Asian population voted for Obama...
66% of "other" minorities voted for Obama...

yet he could not have won without "unanimous" support from African Americans?

Let's check the numbers, shall we?

In 2004, 14 million African Americans reported voting (about 56% of the eligible population). Obama registered millions more. No figures available yet, but let's assume he got all 25 million eligible voters from 2004 to register for this election.

We know 95% of African Americans voted Obama, so that would mean he got about 23 million votes from African Americans.

Obama won by 7 million votes, meaning he only "needed" 16 million (about 2/3) of the African American vote to win. The rest was just icing on the proverbial cake.

I'm gonna call you Cleopatra...."Queen of DENIAL"

        Love,

Am I the only one who caught that Obama lied on national television to "Joe the plumber"? Obama told Joe that he wouldn't raise his taxes. The next morning on the news, they announced that his business was worth approximately $280,000. Obama said he was only raising taxes on companies that were worth more than $250,000. I've been out of school for a while now, but I'm pretty sure $280,000 is still more than $250,000! And yet America elected him anyway, so don't come crying to me when he doesn't do what he said he would. He lied, America saw it, and elected him anyway... now that's bravery!

    • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 11/06/2008 7:11:15 PM

Joe the Plumber elbowed his way through a crowd to get to Sen. Obama about Joe's 'fantasy' income, business, and taxes. Everything Joe the Plumber told Sen. Obama was a blatant lie.

McCain latched on to Ohio's Joe the Plumber and was taken in by Pittsburgh's Backward B hoaxster. Pathetic.

Do you want Joe the Plumber to be the next president? Gov. Palin? I'm interested. Talk to us. Would you support a Palin/Plumber ticket in 2012?

Joe the plumber does not own a business. He owes back taxes and he does not have the money to buy the plumbing business he wants. He certainly does not have $280k (otherwise he would not owe the gov't back taxes).

I would agree with you that the comment by mmateo regarding the KKK is unacceptable and shameful. As to the "new generation" it is true that you have not known the bigotry of the sixties and prior, but that is not necessarily a good thing. Because you don't know what it was like you cannot comprehend the real danger it poses. You also likely did not live through the Carter Administration, which began with $.25 a gallon gasoline and ended with "gas shortages," lines around the block, being permitted to get gas only on the days that you license plate number allowed, and American citizens being taken hostage by the Iranians. The problem with your generation is that you do not possess the wisdom that comes from experience, only idealism. When reality hits you in the ***, you will think differently. I cannot get the image of the young girl at the Obama rally proclaiming, tears rolling down her face: "I will never have to worry about health care, making my mortgage payment, or paying my bills ever again. Obama will help me." Anyone who actually believes that is in for a rude awakening. He cannot deliver on 1/10th of the things he promised. He did what McCain was unwilling to do: Promise everything to everyone to get elected. Now he has to deliver what cannot be delivered. "No he can't!"

Aren't you speculating on what that young woman's thoughts were? Perhaps tears were rolling down her face because history was made in the fact that our country elected it's first black President?

Enter Your CommentYou know that is exactly why the younger generation WILL succeed, because they don't remember the awful 60's and 70's. They like to dress retro, but they don't think retro.
We must move out of there way, and help them to acheive a better world. Not a world based on fear and hatred, but a world in love with loving everyone into the fold. We are all unique, and can contribute so much more...only if we don't give into fear. I'm so proud of our younger generation for voting in a positive way..they deserve better ..go forward, go positive, Love one another!

    yes ! the worst ever,

McCain may survive the turmoil but Palin was the biggest joke ever......

  • Posted By: winegirl @ 11/06/2008 6:47:31 PM

Not the worst ever since he did win a significant number of votes. However, campaigning today is a lot different than campaigning years ago. The news cycle is much shorter and there are bloggers, TV and radio shows with obvious slant in one direction or another. I really liked John 8 years ago but he lost whatever he had then. His campaign was not tightly managed, he seemed to be at odds with his strategists at times and he allowed a poor choice to be rammed through for running mate (I don't for a minute believe John himself chose Sarah Palin as his "first choice." ) Just poor strategy and execution all around. It's kind of too bad since he would have been a much more formidable candidate if he had followed his earlier instincts. I also perceived, perhaps incorrectly, that he seemed relaxed and relieved (as did Mrs. McCain) during the concession speech. He could see his life normalizing again.

This is so very true! I have been saying much of the same for a while now. The Republicans just don't get it, people do not want negative politics! They spent too much time trying to destroy Obama, huh! President Obama than they did defining their platform. I still do know just what they had to offer, when asked to speak directly they NEVER could all they offered were attacks against what President Obama was offering!

McCain & Palin were just a hot mess roaming around our nation with lies, fear and hate. that is ALL they will be remembered for! I was like they were trying to take us back to the 1960s.

What Congressman Lewis said about them was very TRUE! I personally felt they should have been arrested for inciting hate and danger against a person, a US Senator never the less! This should be against the law, even in politics!

Enter Your Comment Yes I think we should redefine the process. At one point Palin incited such hatred, violence was chanted. That should not be allowed. Did anyone hear / see Pastor Rod Parsley, tell everyone to NOT vote for the hate crimes bill. A so called believer in Christ, running a mega church / non profit, who continually tells the congregates how to vote. Indeed very sad, to see a man of such responsibility to abuse it with dictatorship style of hatred and lies. Has Christ become their tool of fear and hatred, and without it they are without a product? Separation of church and state must also be a priority. There are way too many religions, and not enough loving Christ like individuals, perhaps this is why the Moslems cannot condone our ways or anyone for that matter. What message are we sending to our children, when they were compounded with such hatred via TV, and the internet??? Let Love be your Greatest aim!!!.

What good is a free press if they are so completely biased?

    • Posted By: ThePrairiePrankster @ 11/06/2008 6:37:09 PM

A free press means you or I can start our own publication with whatever bias, or not, we want to inject. If you don't like what you are reading, there are choices. A lot of talk radio, which is part of the media, tilts conservative and I see no problem with that. TV and many print publications are left of center, but no one say we have to read them or patronize their sponsors. Have a good day!

What worries me at this time is as Powell stated, "..the narrowing of the Republican party." It really bothers me to say that what I witnessed in this political season was a party that became exclusive vs. inclusive. After Palin arrived the definition of a Republican could only be: against abortion, against taxes (even with the biggest deficit in our history), small town, uneducated, angry/scared/mean (border line violent) white people.

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/06/2008 6:36:32 PM

If you had said inexperienced and unknowledgeable I'd agree with you. Angry/scared/mean? Please. You're letting your personal dislike for the lady get in the way of your intellect (if you possess any). Btw, nice slam on the angry white people...very touching.
