Although the economy was a major factor, the selection of Sarah Palin was a big factor for independents; it brought into questions 3 things about McCain; 1 - judgment 2 - integrity and honesty 3 - his age.
It was obvious the lady was not nearly ready for the position of VP not to mention the Presidency which invited a focus on his age.
It was also obvious her selection was politically motivated which raised questions about McCain motivation, integrity and judgment.

McCain did make a serious error is choosing Palin. I consider myself a moderate. I would vote Democrat or Republican based on the candidates. I was leaning toward McCain until about a week after he announced Palin. That's when I heard how inarticulate she was in a one on one interview. When she was able to use her notes and stick to what she wanted to say, she did okay. When she actually had to think and answer on her feet, she was terrible. Not to mention the fact that the colloquialisms she used as a vice-presidential candidate should be reserved for time among family and friends or at her children's hockey games. I would have been mortified for her to speak for our country using the language she has throughout this campaign. My biggest fear was that if McCain passed away or got seriously ill, she would have been in charge. I am grateful that Obama won.

Some of these comments being posted by the republicans on this site, sound like how I felt 8 and 4 years ago. Disillusioned and disappointed that my fellow Americans were so ignorant and short sited. My depression over the last 8 years has lifted and I finally feel hope again. I do feel in a way for those whose candidate lost but your party had the last 8 years and blew it horribly. It is what it is. Learn and Grow.

I agree with carobe0007. I do not want to work my @#$%% off for someone who doesn't have the iniative to go look for a job. It's easier to stay at home and live off the system, and now there will be more of that. Why don't we all just up and quit the democrats will take care of us afterall. The USA just elected a black robin hood and frankly I don't want him robbing me to give to the poor i work hard for my money I think I should have a right to say where it goes. under the mattress?

I couldn't agree w/ you more. McCain blew this election to an "empty suit" that could speak his way out of a paper bag w/o a telepromtor. Obama ran a great campaign, no doubt, but McCain's choice of Palin definately weakened the ticket. In every interview or debate, she proved to be as big of an "empty suit" that Obama was. McCain could have turned it around once the economic problems exploded and it was apparent that Palis was turning away voters had he asked her to step down for "family reasons" and ran w/ Romney instead. Neither McCain nor Palin have or presented any strategy to tackle the economy other than "we are mavericks" and they ran that and the "Joe the Plumber" angle into the ground. I for one (a republican) had to ask myself: "is that all you have"? And apparently it was.

    • Posted By: SavethisCountry @ 11/05/2008 11:56:21 AM

For a second there I thought you were talking about Palin. Empty suit she is defnitely. Was looking for the puppet strings, but couldn't see them beyond Joe the tax evader. Educated, well spoken, unifier and you call him an empty suit. Just cause he doesn't live in your camp ground, drink Bud, and can't name the top three extreme fighters doesn't qualify him as an empty suit. Now lipstick pigs, that's a different story.

    • Posted By: jjaffie @ 11/05/2008 11:44:40 AM

Yeppers, Old guy & empty suit vs young charismatic empty suit, no brainer who would most likely come out on top.

Another laughable Newsweek article. We all know the reason Obama won is because the media annointed him "the one" and refused to report anything negative about him, his family or his running mate, despite all the questionable dealings and associations. Instead, the news media helped get McCain elected over all other Republican candidates because he was the easiest to defeat. Then they ripped him for his age and ripped his running mate, Ms. Palin. They bashed her family, her experience, nothing was off limits, even though she is more qualified than Obama, McCain, or Biden. She has executive experience, making 'the buck stops here' decisions. They only voted in the senate and most times Obama voted "present" as opposed to yea or nay. He couldn't even make a decision then and now you entrust him to make decisions vital to our country's economic & social well-being and our security.

You say Republicans are greedy and rich yet Obama was supported by big money news media and rich celelbrities. For the first time in my life I can honestly say that I'm not proud of my country. In the words of Obama's great mentor and reverend, 'God Damn America!'

    • Posted By: donkayp @ 11/05/2008 11:23:01 AM

So true! That is why I have already cancelled my subscription to Newsweek.

      • Posted By: mada03 @ 11/05/2008 11:56:05 AM

I Bet you won't say God Damn America in a public setting! Only cowards make comments like that on internet blog sites because they don't have enough spine to fight for what they believe in. You're a coward.

      • Posted By: carobe0007 @ 11/05/2008 11:42:49 AM

this is sooooo true! The media anointed him as a "demi-god" of sorts who could do no wrong. With all of the questionable connections that he has, if this had been John McCain or any other Republican candidate, they would have been torn to bits, (oh yeah, I forget, they were!). I believe that no matter what McCain did, he would not have won because everyone walked on eggshells worrying what would happen if the 1/2 black man didn't win! I wonder if Michelle Obama is pround of her country now? I also wonder if they are going to participate in "sharing the wealth?"

ONCE A REAL ECONOMIC DEPRESSION SETS IN I WILL BE THRILLED TO DEATH TO TELL THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THIS MAN IN AS OUR PRESIDENT: "SEE, I TOLD YOU SO!" FURTHER, AFTER READING ALL THESE BLOGS, I AM THRILLED TO KNOW THERE ARE SOME HONORABLE AND OUTSTANDING AMERICANS WHO THINK LIKE I DO. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS.

Seems there are alot of sore losers out there. The best man won.. It is time for the "GOOD OLE BOYS CLUB"to saddle up and ride off into the sunset. McCain 's worse mistake was PALIN. She made me embarrassed to be a woman. God! The thought of her running this country sent shivers down my spine!
NOW,I can say that I am PROUD to be an American!

The 1790 Congress, many of whose members had been members of the Constitutional Convention, provided in the Naturalization Act of 1790 that "And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond the sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens." In addition George Washington was president of the Constitutional Convention and President of the United States when this bill became law. If Washington disagreed with this definition, he could have vetoed this bill.

"WHOA" to the person who commented about skin color. I have hired and promoted a RAINBOW of people in my business career. This was NOT about race - how dare anyone - including Barack Obama himself - bring that up again. But it can NOT be denied that a substantial number of black Americans voted simply because Obama is black. Now is that considered racist? I believe it is.

What historians will judge this campaign upon is the death of journalism as we knew it for the past 80 years in this country. We are set to enter a truly challenging period of history where we have an untested and inexperienced president, never vetted by our national media, who has a very liberal voting record, leading larger majorities of his party in Congress that features very liberal leadership, and no objective "mainstream" media to hold it accountable. That is the change we have and must now deal with as a nation.

This is an unusually poor analysis of what went wrong for the McCain campaign. I sure hope no future candidate puts any store by this.

First, so far from being too "dark", McCain was not clear enough about the implications of Obama's associations (when you know as little as we do about Obama's core, the company he keeps becomes all the more relevant).

Secondly, this analysis makes no reference to the critical disparity in financial resources (due, at leat in part, to Obama's breaking his pledge to restrict his campaigh to public funding).

And, finally, there seems to be no recognition that, but for the post-convention crisis afflicting the American economy, even with all the shortcomings of the McCain campaign, the clear indications are that, whatever the remaining shortfall in the popular vote, McCain may well have prevailed in the electoral college.

This article has some good points. But let's be fair: with so many issues troubling to the American people, and with a frighteningly growing segment of people seeking entitlement rather than the "you can do it yourself" philosophy, the deck was stacked against McCain. The most troubling aspect is that Obama is feeding right into the hands of our enemies---who are delighted to see any sign of Americans NOT working for themselves.

Who I feel bad for is the Military who is now so pose to salute a man who will not pledge allegiance to the flag proudly with his hand over heart, and promises to help disarm and weaken our national defense.

Congratulations to our voters who put the party back in power that gave us the mandatory sub prime lending of loans that caused this financial crisis in the first place.

The USA IS the greatest Country in the world. Hope that all this change I keep hearing about is not going to affect that.

    • Posted By: blubinus @ 11/05/2008 11:52:34 AM

Mandatory? I remind you that Congress was Republican between 1994 and 2006. Though Cisneros, a Clinton guy, pushed to loosen mortgage regulations to allow more people to own homes, it passed a Repbulican Congress. Then, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act finished the deal off. These were Republican policies.

'There's no place like home, there's no place like home. . . . ' Gotta love these people who think just saying USA is number is enough. Bush has taken away the respect the US used to have. Your limited education and narrowmindedness shows in your comments, and it's this that Obama will help us overcome. The winners have now shown BY NUMBERS, it seems we love the US as much if not more than you do. Pop another beer, you're back to watching NASCAR.

Hey self taught. I'm sure you don't even know the words to the anthem or the preamble. Doesn't make you a traitor, but does show your education level comes off the back of a cereal box. There is no statement that Obama made to state he is not a Christian (oops there goes that arguement) and that he doesn't salute the flag because he doesn't love the US (one photo) but again where's that photo of those WMD's, or the photo of Osama BL captured. Goes to show you have shallow interests and vision, not wanting whats best for the US at all. Trailer door is leaking, best to fix it.

    • Posted By: jjaffie @ 11/05/2008 11:38:20 AM

Wow one picture where Obama didn't have his hand over his heart and you convict him a traitor. Based on your application of that principle I will just go ahead and brand you a MORON because of your one stupid post. See how it feels?

Well, McCains campaign was not all that bad. McCain decided to take public funding which allowed Obama to out advertise him. Next, the media was on Obama's side even in the primaries (not much McCain could have done there). Even when Obama went negative, it was not perceived that way. The economy was pinned on McCain from the very beginning which he could not shake even when he pointed out that he tried to pass legislation in 2005 to address future issues which came to fruition. Then there was Palin! The media could not bash her enough! She had a record of success that equalled that of Obama, yet the media claimed she was inexperienced and never questioned Obama. There was a double standard in this race relative to the media. Obama and Biden were never vetted where as Palin was crushed by a vetting process no other politician had even seen. Think about it! Obama spent how much and only one 52-46? I think the difference lies in the 42% of the population that will benefit from the $2200 tax credit that will be received by those who pay no taxes. That is where he bought the votes!

Also- With big states like California and Florida voting in favor of traditional marriage, he could have driven a wedge in the Obama campaign. Although Obama did say he is opposed to gay marriage, he has called for a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. With traditional marriage taking a percentage of 52% favor in CA, and Obama taking 61% --McCain could have tightened the race by bringing the contradiction to the forefront.

John McCain was a victim of the policies and procedures of the radical right wing of the Republican party. They were so suspicious of John that they withheld support until late in the game. The choice of Sarah Palin was made in large part to satisfy the radical Republican right wing base. While that choice satisfied the base, it turned off many independents. And because John couldn't repudiate the base and the policies of George Bush, his campaign was left with little choice but to try to smear Obama and scare the electorate. The Straight Talk Express crashed and burned. Until the Republican party ends the dominance of the radical right wing within the party, the Democrats will enjoy many years as the party in power.
