Race was never a matter in this race. People make it seem like he is not half white at all. How does McCain the Maverick who graduated 892 in a class of 894. Plain who went to five school to get one degree in journalism she should have had a docorate degree by now. Your article is garbage and it refers to Barack like he is just sum guy who never achieved anything. Weather people like it or not he is your president. GOD bless America

John McCain is a good, honorable American who was defeated in part by the horrible advice of his campaign..He was not the same man we all knew in 2000. His pick of Sarah Palin who would have become President, if something would have happed to McCain really frightened an awful lot off Voters, both Democrat and Moderate Republicans. Sure she appealed to the "Republican Base" but that base, mainly evangelical Christians with their narrow view of Bibical teaching, is being replaced by more Moderate Christians like myself who view Bibical teachings like Rick Warren does, rather than James Dobson, Pat Robertson , the late Jerry Falwall, and others in that catagory. The so called "Republican Base" has been soundly rejected by the American people!

      pumkincat Good points

But I'll be willing to bet my life savings that if Palin would have been on Obama's ticket, she would have been the greatest choice ever and with all of her experience as a mayor and governor would have help Obama. You know the same experience as the last few presidents. Clinton was the Governor of the backwards state of Arkansas before he took office, yet Palin was inexperienced? Tell me another one media. It doesn't matter what McCain would have done differntly, the media and hollywood elite already had a choice for you.

TDogg, it was really nice to see a good ole boy being dogged out by the media instead of a black man being the recipient of an media ambush.

pumkincat--I am a woman, I am white, and you are wrong--my opinion about Palin would have remained the same. I didn't judge her because MCCain chose her. You just dont get it, though. I don't consider myself Republican or Democrate. I voted for Bush 8 years ago.
But, Obama didn't choose Palin, and if he used the same reasoning that you suggest, HE WOULD HAVE CHOSEN HILLARY.

How right you are. What is there not a REAL Pro LIFE movement - not just a cynical cover to garner votes and power to advance a greed agenda?

    • Posted By: RoPaul @ 11/05/2008 11:20:37 AM

Hey Pumkinat! The "Republican Base" was NOT soundly defeated by the American people. The Republican base was not represented in this campaign.
But you are right that Obama won pretty handily. So, we give the man a chance. Let's pray for him that he does a good job. Fair enough?

In many ways, McCain and Palin ran their campaign as if it were beign kicked off on the days immediately following 9/11 -- with the focus on fear, leftists, cynicism, terrorists, and impending disaster of Obama was elected.

What they needed to do was completely seperate themselves from George Bush -- both policy wise and campaign strategy-wise. What they ended up doing was ... exactly what he and Cheney and Rove would have done. With Bush approvals ratings drifting below 30%, what was McCain thinking?

Wow. What a miscalculation. Bet McCain wishes he'd avoided the old Bush campaign advisors like the plague ... instead of inviting them in to doom his quest for the presidency.

Bush screwed McCain, twice. First in the year 2000 and again in 2008. Unbelieveable.

I am glad you caught that too. But the Palin haters don't care about the truth.

Actually, I think the news media is the only thing that went wrong with McCain's campaign. This artical is just another example of the unfair, liberal news coverage of the presidential election. Where was the media coverage when Obama refused to produce a foreign policy or when he sealed his birth and medical records or would not even respect America by wearing an American Flag pin or putting his hand over his heart during our National Anthem? That's right, they were busy attacking McCain's campaign.

  • Posted By: IamnotanAmericanbutluvdaUS @ 11/05/2008 11:35:19 AM

No, Obama is not the saviour, but the way Americans looked at him last night is clearly reflective of the hopelessness Bush created among them while in office. Americans needed to see something different - anything different - anything that didn't look like what they already had, anything that didn't look like the system that failed them - they were not looking at Obama as the "Saviour - The Christ", but they were looking to him as a nation in need of a someone to save them. They were looking at someone who offered "hope" for a new direction to take the country other than the doldrums where it seemed to be nestling most recently. Barak has won and some people still have time to be calling him Marxist, socialist and other things. (Where did all of that talk get John McCain and Sarah Palin?) People get over it!!! He's your new president...and we pray to God that He will be one of the best presidents the United States has ever had. America needs that and the world needs that....and all the name calling (socialist moron, Muslim) now in the aftermath of the election is not going to change John McCain's position today. Black, white, purple, orange - Barak Obama is yours for the next four years, and maybe eight. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!

    HIP HIP HOORAY!!!!!!!!!
Finally a President who is actually smart and not appearing to be so. If I never see another Bush again, I would be too happy!

  • Posted By: tk0674 @ 11/05/2008 11:34:53 AM

Boy you sure don't like McCain, do you???? As most of the media has, you included, painted a bad campaign for McCain-Palin... Not the case at all. As a matter of FACT.... Obama spent three times as much money to smear his opponent! Must be nice instead of putting some of that money to good use in the economy. We haven't seen the last of Governor Palin either, she will be back you watch. I guess now we can just sit back and try to hold on, it's gonna be one heck of a ride. Hope America is ready! Don't want to hear any complaining in a year or two! Obama is the most inexperienced President-Elect we've ever had, so good luck with that.

    The Results
    2008

Using ???Joe the plumber??? wasn???t any dumber
Then picking Sarah Palin as his Veep.
The consultants that he had were really awful bad
And his campaign ended up in one big heap

McCain???s a real nice guy and the simple reason why
He lost the White House run is pretty clear
He listened to some dopes that didn???t know the ropes
And he blasted the Barack guy smear by smear

Honesty???s the way that can really make your day
And John is honest as the day is long
But politics??? a battle it can shake and roll and rattle
And smear campaigns have always been quite strong

So he went the smear em way, the advisors they held sway
And his campaign really didn???t go too well
So he???ll finish his career in the Senate with some cheer
Then retire, with his wife and rest a spell.

McCain is a great American. I believe McCain was getting bad advice from his advisors. I have been a life-long republican; however, if Palin is the future of the party I will be dropping from the GOP. About 7 million other Americans agreed with me. Hate speech and attempting to work the uninformed into a frency is just wrong. If you treat the majority of Americans respectfully and speak to them in an intelligent manner the people will respond positively. McCain's speech last night was thoughtful and delivered very well, if he could have done that during the campaign (along with picking a better running mate) he could have won.

I feel that McCains concession speech really revealed the true McCain and not the one that was 'fashioned' out by the Team McCain. While I support Obama, McCain is a serious and trustworthy statesman - but only when he is himself. It is a pity that he lost so harshly because I feel that is a testament more to the badly run campaign than to the person. Although I disagree with McCain, I respect him as a politician.

    • Posted By: polchat @ 11/05/2008 11:32:12 AM

Too bad a great number of the people he spoke to....don't respect him!

    • Posted By: The "O" Team @ 11/05/2008 10:51:36 AM

      I TOTALLY AGREE...

      But... For that same reason...

It is good that he didn't become President...

IF YOU HAVE TO BUY INTO THE "POLITICS AS USUAL" AND YOU HAVE "HANDLERS" THAT HAVE MORE INPUT INTO DEFINING WHO YOU ARE, THEN... YOU ARE NOT READY FOR THE JOB...

      HAIL TO THE CHIEF!!!

This article is just more of the abundant Liberal Media rubbish. God help our country now!

  • Posted By: TDogg @ 11/05/2008 11:30:59 AM

I never understood why any Republicans would pick McCain over several other more obvious choices. McCain is a great person but has always seemed to go against most of my belief on several topicsand issues. As the campaign went on I soon realized it was the media who was pushing for McCain not real conservatives. They swayed the vote b/c they knew Obama could easily defeat McCain on several issues. Obama didn't have to really say what was good about himself, he just had to tear down McCain with the help of media and George Sorros types. He outspent McCain 5-1. They said big oil was running the country, yet it would now seem that is not true. Liberal media, rich libs, and rich celebs seem to be running it. Now that they have it we will see what kind of change we have been promised.

SNOOP DAWG For President!! Couldn't be worse than Bush, and I would feel more safe than with BHO!

It's amazing how Newsweek continues to find new light-weight columnists with each passing week.

First of all, the "kill him!" comment that supposedly took place at a Palin rally was previously dismissed by the secret service as a liberal myth. But newsweek has never let facts interfere with a column.

And regaridIng the economic meltdown, to make the comment that in contrast to McCain, "...Obama's decisions and performance seemed presidential," was ludicrous. Obama did nothing for nearly two weeks while he tried to figure out what to say.

A 'deer in the headlights' is not exactly "presidential."

More good work by Meacham and his failing magazine.
