Obama did not win by a landslide...he won the popular vote in this election by only 6%. That is not a very wide margin for a man that was competing against a Republican who was following a encumbent president with a 25% approval rating who started a failed war and after a huge stock market crash. Obama also had $100 million more to spend than McCain. I would say that Obama bought this election.

Dear Whilterock, Not a landslide? I think LBJ was the last president to win by more than 50.1% percent of the vote. Not a landslide? 350 + electoral votes. Not a landslide? Carrying 8 states that Bush won in 2004. How do you define a landslide? Obama buried McCain, that is a landslide

      • Posted By: whiterock @ 11/05/2008 3:24:17 PM

The electoral college is different than the popular vote. Remember the Bush/Gore election? Everyone was upset because Bush won the electoral vote and Gore won the popular vote but Bush got to be president. As far as the popular vote...which means the people's vote...he only won by 6%. Now if Obama had achieved more of the popular vote the a one-point spread, than I would agree with you.

        • Posted By: gigglinggirl @ 11/05/2008 3:56:50 PM

Whiterock....you NEED TO REPEAT REMEDIAL MATH!!!!!! 6% is MORE THAN 1 point!!!!!

            Perhaps he meant digit?

    • Posted By: gigglinggirl @ 11/05/2008 3:14:13 PM

Hey doophus. When 100 million people vote, 7% advantage = 7 million votes. That "my friends" is a landslide.

    • Posted By: kcloud @ 11/05/2008 3:06:53 PM

he did buy it!!! I would like to know if he plans on sharing the wealth with me and when?

    • Posted By: kshortSD @ 11/05/2008 2:59:18 PM

Enough with the "buying the election" crap! He gained the support of millions, THEN the money came in through small individual donations. If he hadn't been able to inspire such support, he never would have had the money. Give it up, what a stupid argument!

    • Posted By: TJ21 @ 11/05/2008 2:57:12 PM

if you want to go there, then actually we bought it for him. It was our money donated to him

The Republicans and mc Cain had it comming, they run the most dirty and lying campain in my 84 year of life I could not believe that he and Palin went that far with their smear tactics, like we have to go over dead bodies to win. The biggest blunder was to get a Palin on his team ,she is the one that put most nails in his coffin .SO much hate came out of her mouth that threw a lot of voters off,but besides all this it could not be stopt anyway this is America's new Revolution and it's about time.

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/06/2008 10:43:29 AM

WTF? Some punctuation would be nice my friend.

As a news reporter, I am ashamed of the lack of objectivity shown by both broadcast and print journalism during this election. Everyone's an editorialist now? If it weren't for me telling him, my 8-year-old would never know that "the news" is supposed to report the facts, not give their opinions or show favoritism.

Whatever the McCain campaign staff was doing pre-Palin WASN'T working. The introduction of Palin to the campaign brought life into the Republican party. Were these staff members intent on LOSING the campaign????? Palin ALMOST pulled this race away from Obama.

    • Posted By: Brooklyn Gurl @ 11/06/2008 10:37:19 AM

HEY IZME; I THINK THAT THE KEY WORD HERE IS "ALMOST".

  • Posted By: pbgood @ 11/05/2008 3:07:54 PM

I am delighted Obama won but I use to like McCain at one time. I agree with this article, his #1 mistake was picking Palin. She was simply not qualified and seem to think only about her celebrity status and let's face it she was just plain stupid! I am so glad women did not make her a role model. Her kids seemed unruly and her husband seem to just want teh spotlight. McCain should have also stayed away from the negative ads and stuck with the facts like Obama did when he said McCain voted w/Bush 90% of the time. That is something you know is true and can dig your teeth into But picking Palin was his biggest downfall. I know she will resurface because we make stars out of anyone but I wish she would disappear into the mountains of Alaska and work on her brain power and raising her unruly kids.

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/06/2008 10:34:23 AM

Give me a break...we shouldn't vote for her because you don't like the way her husband and kids look? I agree that she was too inexperienced to be nominated. Let's not be hateful. That's like me not wanting to vote for Obama because his wife looks scary.

  • Posted By: whitepeoplearefunny @ 11/05/2008 3:08:45 PM

you white people crack me up. how does it feel to broke, no job and having to borrow money to move overseas so you can work, what a commute. guess who did it to you? Republicans!!! who knows in four years you might not have to commute. give Obama a chance, he may shorten your ride to work.

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/06/2008 10:27:41 AM

Out of all the stupid comments on here...both from Left and Right...that one has to take the cake for sheer ignorance. Please explain how the Republicans single-handedly accomplished all the malevolent feats you ascribe to them. To lay all the blame at their feet is silly to say the least.

    • Posted By: hardworkingfemale @ 11/05/2008 3:55:36 PM

There are white people who have been broke and have had to work hard to pull themselves out of poverty. I came from a very small southeaster Kentucky town, was a single mother of three children, drove 45 minutes to work every day and then from work 1 hour and 20 minutes to a college to take night classes 3 to 4 times a week and then a two hour drive back home. I would then prepare my children's lunch and dinner for the next day, do my homework and get a couple of hours sleep before I started over again the next day. I did this until I received my Bachelor's and then my MBA. You can't tell me anything about commutes or poverty, but I made it and now have moved and have a successful career and put two of my children through college, all without any hand outs. I paid for my college and raising my children by working HARD. NOTHING was given to me. If I could do it anyone can, it just takes determination and a will to have a better life. The economy cannot be blamed on one person or one party and we the people have to take some responsibility also. Many took out home loans and moved into homes they KNEW they could not afford. No one could talk me into buying something I knew I could not pay for. I only hope that Obama turns out to be a great president for all our sakes, I would say the same about McCain if he had won. As I have said before, I did not vote the way I voted because of skin color. I voted after researching each candidate's background and politics and whose views and platforms best matched what I have always stood for. I want nothing just given to me, but I also don't want to be penalized because I pulled myself out of poverty and became successful, and I did it by hard work.

  • Posted By: kcloud @ 11/05/2008 3:13:24 PM

I cannot believe any of this. I understand supporting our president, but he did buy his way in. Did you see Oprah on the news last night? Drug addicts voting. Are you really going to tell me that I should support a president whom wants drug addicts voting, people who possibly could not have been up to date on politics, ecspecially only a week in rehab. Disgraceful. Not to mention the media swinging this election towards Obama. They cannot deny it. And Palin was far more qualified than Obama, the media was bent on making her look ditzy instead of the well experienced Govener that she is.

    • Posted By: DWPitts @ 11/06/2008 4:21:17 AM

Does this mean Rush Limbaugh wasn't allowed to vote then, given he is a drug addict?

      • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/06/2008 10:20:07 AM

If we're disqualifying people for PAST drug use would we still be talking about Pres.-elect Obama at this point? Please think before you post nonsense ...thanks.

    • Posted By: nmbrldy69 @ 11/05/2008 3:25:43 PM

Speaking of looking ditzy - you might want to use "spell check" before posting a critique, chipmunk. The better the words and sentence structure, the more people will actually give you credit for the half-brain you do possess.

Jim Herring, With respect to your views about McCain selecting Palin being a positive, I think the saying "if you like this sort of thing, then you'll find this the sort of thing you like" really hits the nail on those who supported her on the ticket. As in, if Palin and her views spoke to you, then you were going to love her as a politician. But you do have to take into consideration the way that she came across to the many American's who felt she was inexperienced, not yet ready for the job, and that she didn't relate to their lives in many ways.

Maybe if I had seen her in person I would have felt differently, but I think it is telling that one of the few moments where I actually liked her was during her brief scripted appearance on SNL. And, as Zelizer writes in this article, the fact that McCain had selected her at the last minute after only meeting her twice before didn't help my opinion of McCain in that this seemed like a transparent "political move" (rather than "Country First"). Zelizer is also dead on when he talks about how this first impression set the cynical tone of how I as a voter looked at anything else that would come out of their campaign. At that point, every stunt, every attack move, and every "zinger line??? just reaffirmed my opinion of McCain not being the better of the two candidates to be straight forward and help move our Country in a better direction; I just saw him as someone who would do anything to win the election.

FACT: "Kill Him" was shouted at a Palin rally ... I saw it and heard it. They played the hell out of in on CNN, Fox News, C-Span and every place else. It was played all over talk radio as well. All this hate talk about Obama doesn't scare him or those who voted for him (70% of the population ... remember lots of folks had to vote provisonal .. we won't get into that). Obama is our President and he will stay for two terms ... no doubt. I watched plenty of news media, and some were slanted McCain, and some were slanted Obama. No one got more hits than the other. In fact I thought the lies and smears about Obama were really uncalled for. Palin got dissed because the american people could clearly see that "Caribu Barbie" was way out of her league. I do think they should make a Palin Barbie Doll ... it would be so life like.

    • Posted By: SwiftBoat @ 11/06/2008 10:12:56 AM

If you saw and heard "kill him", and all of the media has copies, you need to contact the Secret Service.

    • Posted By: Smart Democrat @ 11/05/2008 10:18:52 PM

I heard that comment was investigated by the secret service and they found no evidence of anyone saying kill Him! It is time for both sides to stop the lying BS

Hey Mmateo; Comment: Hey Desertbutterfly if you really want an answer to your question of how could a person born in Kenya become President of the United States of America, you will probably be able to ask him yourself in person when he is sworn in on January 2009 as the 44th President of the United States of America.

      • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/06/2008 10:12:30 AM

That's very clever genius but you still haven't answered the question.

Hey Sarah Palin when you pack your bags and head back to Alaska, take George Bush and Mmateo with you and that way you guys can look out your back window and keep an eye on Russia and inform us when you think that they are about to strike.

  • Posted By: ResearchQueen @ 11/05/2008 4:29:24 PM

I just wanted to make a couple comments.. To those that are hung up on the terrorist and sleeping through 20 years of a contraversial preacher.. do a little homework. These networks play 20 to 30 second snipets of a sermon that was taken out of context. I watched the full sermons because i needed to know. In both instances he was not speaking as himself talking.. He was quoting an ambassador that had been on a major network in regards to "the chickens have come home to roost".. and talking about repressed people in the "God Damn america" sermon. I can't take the media's word for anything, If I hear something that concerns me I look it up and research it. I would challenge any of you to find me evidence that Obama started his campaign in Bill Ayers living room. Not an excerpt from fox news but EVIDENCE...Never happened. I think if him serving on an education board with a domestic terrorists makes him one then all of the students and faculty that attend the University of Illinois where he is a well respected professor (PH.D in education) they are all terrorists. I don't condone his past but he is not in jail and is doing something with his life. Then everyone who has ever done anything wrong major or minor has no chance of being rehabilitated and we should cut off all those in our lives who have made mistakes no matter how insignificant our association is. Im sorry for the long post.. I just feel we need to be careful with what we listen to.. Don't always believe the hype!!! I love John McCain , I respect him a great deal and the man has truly been a servant of this country, but even it's not responsible for us to hear a clip of this or that and take it for gospel truth on either side.. Thanks for listening

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/05/2008 5:45:03 PM

He was not speaking as himself talking ..huh???

      • Posted By: DWPitts @ 11/05/2008 6:48:14 PM

It's called paraphrasing..it's a fairly common oratory and literary device. Don't care for it myself, but many public speakers and authors use it.

        Just saying...

        • Posted By: pbpace @ 11/06/2008 9:59:33 AM

I understand paraphrasing. This is just plain old gibberish.

  • Posted By: CAHeider @ 11/06/2008 9:35:31 AM

The true problem is that the Republican's tried to serve only their far right constituents, when most of the country lies in the middle. Senator McCain is a good man, he should have done better in the election. Once Sara Palin became involved, with her far right agenda, McCain was done.

  • Posted By: rprKSA @ 11/06/2008 9:10:03 AM

The Bush 41 re-electrion campaign was the worst I ever saw. But McCain did apretty lousy job. After choosing a grand running mate that took the wind out of the Dems sails, McCain receded into her shadow. The Democrats served up plenty of ripe opportunities to go for the jugular; but the public will not suffer the timid. Truely, McCain should have realized he was over the hill and let others seek the office instead. Th elure is too much and he got his just desert.

  • Posted By: Brooklyn Gurl @ 11/06/2008 9:07:15 AM

I actually liked McCain. The only problem that I had against him was Palin & Bush.

  • Posted By: Jim Herring @ 11/06/2008 9:04:26 AM

Through this article, Mr. Zelizer proves one of the points conservatives have been making for a while. He is probably teaching all this gobblydeegook to the students at Prnnceton too. The choice of Sarah Palin was a brilliant move on the part of the McCain campaign. One has only to look at the numbers of people who showed up at her rallies (I was at one in Va with 25,000 people) to see that, as well as his poll numbers (before the economic turn). The "negative" campaign began with Mr. Obama's thrashing with Hillary Clinton in the primaries and continued on through his next opponent. With his consistent jabs at President Bush, Obama even slug mud at those not even in the race. The #1 problem with McCain was quite superficial, he had little charisma, yet another element Palin brough to the ticket. The #2 issue was the economy. McCain would have won this election had he voted against the bailout and used that issue to show his independence and belief in listening to voters. The #3 issue was failing to educate the American public on the leftist, liberal record of Obama and his cronies Pelosi, Reid, Barney Frank, Ted Kennedy, etc. This was a HUGE tactical blunder to spend all that money and time on Bill Ayers, someone most of us knew little about before the McCain ads. Hats off to the McCain-Palin ticket who almost pulled it off, in spite of 90% of the media leaning left and biased "reporting" of media shams like MSNBC, NBC, Time and, yes Newsweek. I did not vote Obama yet will now support the will of the American people and President-elect Obama, and pray for him and our country and it's leaders on a daily basis. I encourage all to do the same. God Bles America.

  • Posted By: rprKSA @ 11/06/2008 9:03:22 AM

I think Bush 41 re-election run was the worst by far that I ever seen; it was as if he didn't want to be President. He got what I thought he was after. McCain made a great choice for running mate and she over shadowed him. McCain just never gave a fire branding speach and the Democrats served up plenty of opportunities that were wasted. McCain should have had the decency not to run in the first place. He got his just deserts.

The media has missed their opportunity to report on the historical fact that TWO women campaigned for the two highest positions in the US. Senator Hillary Clinton and Govennor Sarah Palin placed themselves at the mercy of the American public and asked America to consider them for President and Vice President of the United States of America. To my disappointment, the entertainment media and news media chose to violate these wonderful role models' human rights and instead of placing a veil over their faces to humiliate, silence and intimidate, theychose the method of broadcasting their faces on tv and insulting them, humilitating them, and abusing them both mentally and emotionally for all to see. Our nation may have come a long way in electing a black MALE president, but we missed a great opportunity to "walk the walk" of displaying women's human rights to the world.

I was tuly surprised, more like amaxed, to check Fox news and see the video featuring O'reilly and Cameron (Fox News senior political commentator) outlining the real feeling about Sarah Palin within the McCain Palin campaign. I didn't believe Fox would be willing to feature such a video. After viewing it I don't believe the republican party would ever consider Sarah Palin as a possible presidential candidate in the future. I feel if the republican party wants to win in the future they will need to become a little less right wing to appeal to more moderate voters.
