You forgot one of the worst run campaigns, Al Gore in 2000. No one in their right mind thought the republicans could win and Gore couldn't win his home state. Thst was incompetence on a grand scale.

You forgot one of the worst campaigns. Al Gore in 2000. No one in their right mind thought the republicans could win and Gore lost his home state. To quote "The Economist" he lost an unlosable election.
"They called Obama a socialist, an extremist and even linked him to a terrorist. The campaign got so out of control that a man at one Palin rally yelled "Kill him!"."
1. He is a socialist. You clearly don't comprehend socialism or basic economics.
2. Obama's views on the unborn child are worse than "extremist;"
3. There is ample evidence of Obama's connection to Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn. That is, if the newsmedia in America had any integrity to investigate any of it.
No matter. Discrediting and smearing a private cititizen -- "Joe the Plumber" -- was alot more important to our impartial news media.
Shame on you all.
1. You should take your own advice and read webster's definition of socialism:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/socialism
(my favorite is #3, which effectively explains corporate subsidies and tax incentives)
2) America has spoken time and time again on this.....sorry, but you're in the minority on this one (I won't call you an extremist because I don't know you personally)
3) NOBODY CARES
Love,
JM
Are you suggesting Joe the plumber is in some way to be pitied? Is this the same "private citizen" who was trotted before millions of people by the McCain campaign? Are you worried about him for some reason? Despite the fact that Sen. McCain called him an American hero and his "role model" the guy is a lunkhead. Actually, correction..he is a lunkhead with a publicist and an eye out for a possible recording contract or book deal. Yes, poor Joe the Plumber.
Folks, it's not about how he campaigned.
It is that the type of mean spirited, money grubbing, torture-accepting, war-mongering ideals of his
party were rejected.
Sarah Palin (the biggest joke ever to hit the political scene) aside, if McCain had spoken with the
class he displayed in his concession speech while he was asking for votes, I might have been
able to listen. As it was, I kept hearing the penguin from batman with his snarky laugh and empty threats.
Dear Haters,
Please keep posing, you guys are hilarious. WAAH! Obama had too much money! BOO-HOO! The media loved him! He only won by 7 points ... SNIFFLE SNIFFLE ... he should have won more!
The best you could come up with during the campaign was William Ayres and his middle name. Now you're tripping over yourselves trying to make up excuses to explain away how Obama won more votes than ANY CANDIDATE IN AMERICAN HISTORY and the highest percentage of the overall vote since Bush I in 1988. (source: http://uselectionatlas.org/)
So, please, keep posting...not only are you reinforcing the fact that America (not you, btw) made the correct choice, but you've also got me on the floor laughing at your collective ignorance.
Love,
JM
Julian, you need to get your facts straight. The Secret Service did a full investigation in to the false allegations that a Palin supporter yelled "kill him" at a rally. They determined, after numerous interviews and audio recordings, that this was NEVER said. The Secret Service takes these threats very serioiusly. Try to act professional and know your facts before writing this drivel.
Is the author of this article serious? He really thinks McCain's campaign was the worst campaign ever? Wow. I guess Julian E. Zelizer forgot about Mondale's loss to Reagan in 1984. Mondale only won his home state (MN) and DC, earning him a total of 13 electoral votes. Reagan carried 525 electoral votes. That was the worst electoral defeat since Alf Landon's loss to FDR in 1936. (Landon secured 8 electoral votes, FDR secured 523.) Since both Republicans and Democrats have experienced worse defeats than McCain's, I'm guessing there were some pretty bad campaigns run those years. Oh, and let's not forget Jimmy Carter's defeat in 1980. Carter carried 49 electoral votes and Reagan carried 489. That was the worst electoral defeat for an incumbent president since Herbert Hoover lost to FDR in 1932.
Let me guess: Julian E. Zelizer is a Democrat. Either that, or he's a revisionist historian. Or both. I really don't see how Carter, Mondale, or Landon could have run better campaigns than McCain and lost their elections by wider margins than did McCain. So I figure McCain's campaign couldn't possibly be the "Worst Campaign Ever."
I love how unbiased the media are.
LuisaInCA---- Excellent post. Thank you! Again... hey Newsweek... GET REAL!
How about McCain ran a poor campaign for someone who had a chance for a long shot win. IMHO, if the Democratic nominee was white, or if the Republicans ran a different person, than the margin of victory for the Democrats would have been 15-20%.
Don't you think it's odd that...after all the money that Obama spent ($100 million more than McCain) and the fact that he was competing with a Republican who was following an encumbent president with only a 25% approval rate that initiated an unpopular war, right after a stock market crash...Obama only had a 6% lead in the popular vote...that means only 6% more people voted for him than McCain. With all the hype about Obama from the media and the polls, don't you think he should have done much better than that?
The reason it was not a bigger margin was the racist vote was not offset by the overwhelming Black vote for Obama. My 85 year old father, who was very pleased with the results, could not bring himself to vote for Obama as he felt the country was not ready for a black man (although he was a pilot in Viet Nam and did have very warm feelings towards McCain. He truly was conflicted over his vote.)
Isn't funny how the Republicans claim mandates (or, "political capital") after a 3 point Bush victory in 2004...
...yet when Obama gets more votes than Bush and wins by a larger margin they call it a nail-biter?
It's almost as funny as them "forgetting" that Bush set fundraising records and turned down public financing on his way to the White House in 2004....
...but crying foul when Obama beats them at their own game.
It's enough to make a grown man cry (from laughter, of course!)
JM
Palin symbolizes what is wrong with the Republican Party, a group of good ol' white men talking about how they can recapture their white voters. WAKE UP. This country will soon reflect the demographics of the rest of the world, and that is being dominated by people of color. Language such as patriotism and terrorism (which is really code for hey, they're not white) will not fly. The Republican Party was not only the party of Lincoln, but of Douglass, and i just don't understand what happened.
It was the worst campaign by media with blessings from OBAMA that has robbed the election
from McCain. McCain is a patriot, who duly serving hi scountry & poud of his country.
He ram an honoroble campaign. The biased media which secretly protected all OBAMA's mistakes &
defended OBAMA from McCain attacks and kept on pounding McCain with negative attackes.
The media did the work for Obama.
See the list:
Media & Obama blamed Bill Clinton as a racist. back in feb 08.
Media blamed Hillary as someone instigating assasination attempt on Obama back in June 08.
Media tried to prove that McCain the patriot, was lieing when he said he was on crutches when
released from Vietnam prison., They were trying prove that he was lieing & tried showing video to that effect.
Media killed Palin & abused her at every level, even citing her baby was given birth to by her teen age
daughter. Sleezy media has to be ashamed..
Time wil correct it. I am glad that OBAMA, the first ever African American to be elected president.
McCain too is proud about that in his concession speech.
But when is the McCain blood hungry media will stop their abuse on McCain.,
Understand it is Over. Rachel Madden was mocking now about McCain lost everything and driving his own car.
Why you guys are so inhuman?
For whatever it is worth, News week, NBC and MSNBC you lost my readership & viewership forever..
If conservatives think the media is so "liberally" biased, you'd think they would start up newspapers and magazines that people who agree with them would buy -- by the ton, making them profitable. But, no, that doesn't happen. Have any of you "media-is-so-liberally-biased" people wondered why that is so? It is wrong to blame what people CHOOSE to read, just because you don't agree with it. Obviously the minority that agrees with YOU doesn't make up enough readership to support alternatives.
The conservative press is alive and well. Unfortunately, the most visible members of the conservative press use unscrupulous negative methods and tactics that eventually wears down even their most ardent supporters. An excellent example of how good the conservative press can be found in England - The Times.
once the gop disappears from polictical arena then the country can have honest elecitons, where we can disagreed without being disagreeable. the many posters here have shown the truth of my statement. they can not discuss without insults and lies.they can not lose with grace so we the people will continue to voted them from office every chance we get. the sooner they are gone the sooner we can truly become an enlighted nation where thoughts and the exchange of thougths is done with respect.
Wow. That is ignorance at it's best. The democratic party is one of the most corrupt machines I have ever witnessed. Where will it turn its anger and immaturity now? Who will it blame now? Yup, there is a party that exudes accountability and transparency. Yup, the democratic party with almost a super majority is already bothered by a possibly strong GOP minority leader. That is fear and smear. Smear? The way the democratic party won that one too the way they handled Palin but not their Obama. Now, with all this unchecked pwer in DC, what does that resemble. Change. Yup, you've got it.
Interesting, ALL of Obama's records are "sealed" or "unavailable". There's transparency.
But now, I too am going to sit back , relax, and enjoy the fruits of anyone else's labor that chooses to still work. hard. And then, my government can take care of me from the cradle to the grave. That leaves me feeling so secure now. Makes me want to buy bonds.. Oh, that's right. with whose or what money?
P.S. This will now give me lots of time to blog the time away!!!!!!
Yeah moron, just because lazy, cruel, ignorant people likeyou need a profit motive or a boot camp environment to function as a normal human being being, doesn't mean we all need this to function, too. There are some of us, stronger in character than you, that would work even harder knowing that we could fall back on a safety net should our endeavors temporarily fail.
madonnaA, you are kidding, aren't you! If you are not, a little introspective thought on your part would go a long way. It is the Republican party that has to play the blame game. The Republicans had unchecked power in DC for 6 of the last 8 years. And if you think that living on the dole is a pleasant life style, you truly are out of touch with reality. Yes, being on the dole gives you the time to blog, just not the means. Most free access computers do limit the time you can spend on them.
maybe ill quit my job and join you in the ghetto of newyork living off welfare and complain about opression of the black race
looks like a free ride to me
TO JOE THE PLUMBER MMATEO: CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF 75% OF WELFARE IS WHITE. ANYTHING OTHER THAN THIS IS JUST A DELUSION THAT THE MEDIA WOULD HAVE YOU TO BELIEVE. I MUST SAY THAT IT WAS QUITE REFRESHING TO SEE CAUCASIANS ON THE BACKLASH OF WHAT IS GENERALLY A BLACK MAN RECEIVING THE BRUNT OF A RACIST STICK. YOU STILL SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN ABORTION.
You are awesome. Don't listen to these ignorant hicks.
bigot. Black people haves jobs. You're probably uneducated and jobless yourself.
I wish you would - you would not last a hour your arrogant idiot.
What the hell is all of this "Christians Rock" and "Christians make up the overwhelming majority in this country, so therefore we are the voice of all" bullshit? I am so sick and tired of hearing from Christians how everyone else is supposed to live their lives. Get it through your bible-thumping, brainwashed minds . . .
MY LIFE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR BELIEFS!
Believe what you want . . . but don't try and make me live YOUR discrimination. The passing of PROP 8 was a total violation of human rights and you Christians and your backing by the Mormom Church is heinous ignorance. For a religion which was formed not but 200 years ago, and practiced Polygomy . . . how are they a viable source of what is "morally" correct in a family setting!?!?
All of that aside . . . a homosexual's life has nothing to do with yours. You still get to believe what you want, you still get to practice what you want, you still can even continue to teach your own children how to discriminate and teach them that homosexuality is wrong . . . but the bottom line is, that it is NOT your place to tell me what to teach my future children, and whom it is OK for ME to marry. It's none of your "goddamn" business! Stay the hell out of everyone else's life, and focus on your own. Passing PROP 8 will not get rid of homosexuals . . . I think in your holy-rolling minds, that you think this Proposition will extinguish gays . . . but you know what? It WON'T. This struggle isn't over, and it won't be over until you hate-loving Christians take off your blinders, and educate yourselves. Stop using your "interpreted" word of God (which is all it is) to perpetuate this pointless "hegemonic" dominance over a group of people who could care less about your beliefs . . . we don't tell you that you cannot be a Christian, so do NOT tell us we cannot have the same rights that you have!
Thank God (yes, because my God is not intolerant . . . but just, and tolerant, and loving of every damn person on this earth) for Newsweek's stance. Republican Christians have done enough damage to last a lifetime. Long live Obama, the first Black President, burdened with the past 8 years of the Bush Administration . . . but full of gumption and the clear-sightedness to get us out of this mess!
You are awesome. Yes, these fundamentalist idiots will never listen to you. I have a pretty liberal friend, however, even she voted Prop 8. I am a total liberal, and wish full equality. I see a problem though, that people are not fully ready... so, a good compropmise has come up. She just wants the actual word, "marriage", to be a specific definition:P of a heterosexual couploe. However, she would accept "Civil union", and grant all tax benefits and other rights as in a m marriage. So, we need to get these people first, then, we can fo for the gold!
First of all, this "article" by Newsweek is a piece of garbage. Only one day from the election and already they are starting with the conjecture. The "kill him" thing was discredited by the Secret Service weeks ago and Newsweek knows this. Whoever it was said "tell him," not "kill him." Newsweek should no better than this, but it is just another in a string of blatent examples of media bias.
There are three reasons McCain lost the election:
1.) The economic crises was a perfect storm happening just a few weeks prior to the election, and most Americans wrongly believe that it was the fault of the Republicans and President Bush. Everyone should get a free macro-economics class so that we can all be a little better informed that that garbage.
2.) The main stream media was completely in the tank for Obama from day one. The ratio of negative ads on McCain vs Obama was extraordinarily lopsided. Wonder why. And, Newsweek has the nerve to say, in the 1st paragraph, that McCain is "loved" by the media. ARE YOU SERIOUS? And, the total whitewash of Sarah Palin was disgraceful.
3.) Money, money, money. Obama went back on his word on using public financing. McCain's publicly financed campaign was no match for Obama hundreds of millions of dollars. Obama bought the election. And, no, McCain's campaign does not hold all the negative cards here, there were negative ads aplenty from the Obama Campaign.
Good points. One thing Obama's election ensures is that no serious candidate will consider accepting public financing for their presidential campaign.
Yeah, like no Repug ever bought anything, much less an election. What are you, an idiot? Moreover, everytime a goddamn Reug is in office, the economy sours, and you idiots always say that it CANNOT BE the Repugs, it simply cannot... over and over again ad nauseum. Then, when a Democrat wins, the econmy becomes fantastic. You all say that it is because of Repug policies implememnted during a Repug term. You are nothing but a cliche.
You said: "President George W. Bush understood this in 2000, stressing compassionate conservatism, and in 2004 he couched his candidacy in an optimistic argument about how the Bush Doctrine could strengthen America against terrorism and restore the kind of security that seemed lost after 9/11." I strongly disagree - the whole 2004 Bush/Cheney campaign was one of fear and negativism - fear of Al Quida coming into our homes if Kerry was elected, fear of gay marriage if Kerry was elected, and fear of Kerry as a war protester via the Swift Boat smear campaign. And your logic is faulted in your own comment - Bush was in power from 2001 - 20004...So our country wasn't secure????? Then why we should have elected him???? No, the Bush Presidency was based on the Rovian strategy of fear and smear and just winning 50.1% of the vote and the Machiavellian philosophy of focusing their message on certain interest groups in different states. Winning and governing was just a game. They didn't mind a divided country. To them the American voters were just sheep to be swayed by jingoism. They were not uniters and ran the government as a private Republican fiefdom. Look at Cheney's famous comment "So!" when told that most of the American public was against the war in Iraq. The country had been fooled by 8 years of fear and smear but finally saw though the "smokes and mirrors" and voted for a positive vision of hope and service. Let's unite behind our new President and get to work.
Only problem, obama thinks he can talk himself out of anything. He is an egotistical person who thinks he is always right. What is going to happen when there is a conflict, and he goes, don't worry about it America! I will talk them down, i will talk with my wonderful voice, and i will talk the terrorists out of this. And what happens when he talks to them and they attack anyways? Don't you think thats going to hurt his ego? It will be like terrell whiner owens vs chad johnson. terrell is all talk talk talk and once the the game is played and he loses he freaks out! obama will do the same, he will talk talk talk and then when things go bad, nucleaur war. because he would rather destroy the world thand e wrong himself. sorry for the typos i cant see what im typing.
to: texnewmex In your rambling you mention point #2 that McCain had nothing but honor and courage, I guess you don't want to mention that he had a hand in the Keating 5 scandal? Of course not because you would have to add thief and liar to his resume, and then you would not be able to blast President Obama with the same ridiculous claims that your ex-presidential hopeful used. So Senator McCain helped pressure regulators from doing their job. So according to you Bravery and courage simply cancel out the fact that McCain took park in a large public scandal. Where as you folks continue to spout disinformation about President Obama.
You claim that President Obama has been linked with Ayers. He served on an educational board with Ayers. I am sure that if Ayers has not changed his ways and was still this blatant threat to the USA he would have been locked up by now, and that the school board would not have allowed him to be on it.
You complain that no one has looked into where President Obamas campaign money came from. Well I hate to say this but you republicans will no doubt have someone start an investigation about this. It will be just like when you republicans had the Clintons investigated for the ???White Water??? issue. They spent millions of tax payer dollars searching everywhere for some dirt on them. Even though they were found innocent of the any wrong doing in the White Water??? issue, you Republicans still dug and dug and dug for any scrap of dirt you could find. Only to have the famous ???White House blow job??? come up for the only thing you could pin on them. I am sure if you searched into anybodies past you can find something, no matter how trivial to try and smear them with.
I have to say I hope President Obama has Bush, Chaney and all of dubya???s cronies investigated. They gave out no bid contracts to Halliburton several times when that is strictly against policy. There is no telling what other activities they had had their dirty hands into. Not to mention the fact they LIED about every reason they gave for us to attack Iraq. They also lied about leaking information to the press in the Valerie Plaime incident. The investigators traced the leak back to the White House and were stonewalled because it would have been shown that Bush and Chaney were responsible for making the leak happen. They (Bush & Cheney) have done nothing but line the pockets of their cronies with cash, they screwed the American public so they could get richer than they were. Heck you can go back into dubya???s past and there is doubt that he ever served his term in the Air Nat Guard. You can find where Dubya was arrested for cocaine possession, but of course since he became a born again Christian everything is forgiven by you republicans. The fact that no one has any dirt on Obama other than innuendos and supposition drives you Republicans nuts.
Arganos: you appear to be one of many extreme liberals who won't listen to any reason and deludes oneself that they are always right. Your long commentary speaks for itself. You still believe President Bush lied about WMD when for the last many months we have been shipping many tons of these chemicals from Iraq. And btw, Haliburton was given an extension of their contract they had won b having the lowest bid and they were already "in theatre" thus saving the military valuable time. God bless you.
Haliburton won nothing. Those were no-bid contracts letted to them under Bush's expedited contracting rules for Iraq (rules which violate all standards of competitive, free market bidding). Gee, "won" makes it seem more "free market oriented" huh?
This would be an interesting article if you had given us the facts without your obvious bias and opinion mixed in. Americans are smart enough to decide for themselves what to think and feel and what this country needs in the future.
What is remarkable is that the election was as close sas it was. McCain made some bad choices, but you are not thinking aabout what his laternatives were. If he did not go negative he lost on ideas. If he picked a moderate running mate the party would not support him. palin was a train wreck, but she got the base off their buttts. Of course getting the base meant losing the center. McCain should have lost by 20% given bush and the failures of the republicon party. Conservatism is a failed ideology. The fact that he convinced enough people that he was not conservaitive to take votes in the middle, and that he was conservative and therefore hold the party faithful in line simultaneously shows that he did not really run that bad of a campaign given his circumstances. The campaign appeaars disjointed because it was really two campaigns for two audiences, just both for the same candidate.
"Conservatism is a failed ideology."
That would depend on which definition of conservatism you are talking about.
Obama recieved my vote on based on three points. 1st point- Understanding the economy's crisis, shrinking of the middle class, home foreclosures ect. A tax break to middle class increases spending cut home foreclosures and moves the economy, helping to liftit out of the recession. 2nd point- honesty, continued straight forward approach, lack of smear campaign in contrast to McCain/Palin, clear programs.
3rd point- Strong vice presidental candidate. McCain sealed his fate with the choice of Palin. It may have been done to capture the votes of the women, but it was an arrogent mistake to think a women would vote for McCain b/c his VP was a women. The desision I make when I vote does not involve someones gender or race, it involves the content of their campaign. Obama won the race due to a strong, stable campaign that was well thought out for the majority of americans, not b/c he is part black. I am sure that some voted soley due to the color of his skin, they are as arrogent as McCain's campaign people. I see Obama in comparison to JFK. Eager, untainted, optomistic and compassionate, a breath of fresh air.
Congratulations Obama! You will do us well
-Hard working middle class American
You do realize that when Obama raises taxes on big companies, they will do one of three things: 1)ship jobs overseas to keep profits high; 2)raise prices on their products; or 3)both. Tell me how this helps the economy? Either jobs are lost or we have to pay more for things (when money is already tight) or both. Either way doesn't seem good to me. Not to mention that the REAL middle class (those making above $50,000) won't see much difference. But just wait and see.
They are shipping jobs oversees, have been for several years, especially under the Bush Administration. The middle class, which I proudly am, keep the wheels of this economy moving. If something is not done to get the middle class to start spending again, the wheels stop. What good is a company with tax breaks if their consumer won't purchase anything b/c they can only afford nessesities. When people spend, the economy moves, period.
