MLK stated he hoped there would come a time "when people shall not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." I pray that this will be so! And to honor the content of MLK's dream, the media must quit splashing around in the superficial redundancy "1st black president" and concentrate on the content of this person rather than his persona. This inaguration can only become symbolic when content and character are judged today; when tomorrow the skin color or gender of an office holder no longer elicits curiosity or fascination. Then, and only then, will this day become a true benchmark in history. Change is incremental but it must be progressive in order to become a continuum. For this, I pray wholeheartedly.

Comment: "...no injustice...can compare with how it has treated black men and women." Have we forgotten Native Americans or that the first slaves here were Caucasion? Slavery, unfortunately, has been with us longer than written language and no one has the market cornered on suffering. Let's own up to the past and let it go. It could be a bright future.

The election of Barak Obama means that 40 years of dumbing down the education system has finally borne fruit. A whole lot of people, who wouldn't stand a chance on 'Are you smarter than a 5th Grader' voted for an Empty Suit. A guy with a paper thin Resume, No Paper Trail, No ACCOMPLISHMENTS, and NOW, No idea what to do next, about ANYTHING. But don't worry. If he has any problems, he can always turn to the Man from MENSA. "Jobs is a 3 letter word", Joe Biden, for assistance. We get the Indians to do our technical work for us, because the kids that finish OUR SCHOOLS are too stupid. Maybe we should get them to VOTE for us too.

You sound extremely bitter. Do you blame people for your possibly pathetic life? Has Obama's predessors done a very good job of driving America to success and health? Well, I don't need to answer that question for you. I think where we are today will answer the question quite well. For McCain to flat out say that there is nothing wrong with the economy signals that this man is out of touch with reality. It is a fact that if you have not lived it then you dont know what it feels like.

I do beleive in Republican views however I don't feel that the previous elected republican leaders have lived up to what it truly means. This world has been steered towards Darkness and all we can do is log on to a website and fuss about who is president. What a president does in the White House affects all Americans. I am a woman who does not beleive in a handouts. I at one time was homeless with four small children but the choice was mine to either stay there at that place or move forward to a better place in life. I chose to move forward. At the beginning of the year, I was laid off my job. I spent 40 hours a week plus more for five months looking for employment. I have no health insurance and had to watch my very ill daughter stay ill for several weeks because I had to make a choice between not being able to pay for a doctor's bill or having a sick child. I don't have money to take my daughter to a doctor and no doctor will see her without insurance. I did buy insurance after I got a temporary job assignment. I pay $289.00 per month. But the insurance company will not pay their 80% until I meet a $2,500 deductible. Well, I am no better off now than I was two months ago because I cannot pay $289.00 per month plus the doctor bill on top of that. So, now I will have to drop the insurance and save the $289.00 and I may as well just go ahead and take my kids to the doctor with the $289.00 by saving it. But then the problem will be that no one will see her because there is no insurance and so there is no guarantee they will be paid.

So, to me? Obama's idea of a reformed health care system to help people sounds good. At this point, I think many people made a choice because of circumstances that many of us share. I am not looking for a handout but I am in a situation where I am defeated. I can't help my family because of lack of funds and health care.

      • Posted By: roadee @ 11/13/2008 11:33:23 AM

CamillaW, a very moving story. A lot of the problem with health care comes from illegal immigrants, they use the emergency room as a doctor, and clog our systems. If they can get by with using the emergency room why can't you? You are right to stop paying for insurance that does you no good because of the high deductable, save your money then you will have cash to pay for doctors visits. Another problem with our system is many people (with low deductables) take their children and or themselves to the doctor with every little sniffle (maybe they haven't heard there is no cure for the common cold?), this raises the cost of insurance for those who don't abuse it. I hope that the place you moved from is contributing?

Here is what I'm asking all Republicans who think they were short-changed by the voter's decision on Tues night. (and I have many Republican friends).
Would you be willing to stop for a moment, and think this through? Cast away all the negativity, and make a decision. Your options are basically twofold: live with our new president, or pack your bags and move to a foreign country. The latter is much easier said than done. In this day and age, you need to be very wealthy to be able to move overseas and permanently settle there.
But what you can do is resolve to live and work under the other political party and give our new president a chance. You may find that your life improves in his administration. At any rate, I'm going to predict that it won't get worse because the Dems won the election.
I spent way too much time ranting and raving at the beginning of both of Bush's terms. It was all about "i'm selling my condo, I'm leaving for Mexico or Canada or Australia or Italy." Of course I never did. I decided that it's too difficult to yank my kids and grandkids out of the ground they are firmly planted in. And I would never do anything like that by myself. Despite my disagreement with everything Bush did these last 8 years I managed to live a good, decent life. I didn't suffer any government-induced setbacks. I'm very glad for our great new change, but I just want to request that you sit back and reflect on this. Above all, though, try to stop the flow of negativity and vitriol. Those are things of the past. Thank you.

Hey good conscience, I voted for McCain, I also agree with you. McCain lost, Obama won, like it or not he is our president. While we can disagree with his policies we should not bash him (as many did with Bush). While there were things I disagreed with Bush on, I also lived a good and decent life. We should all have faith in America and the American people.

And just how should we, as a nation, have reacted to the atrocities of 9/11??? Call it an accident, forgive the terrorist involved and open the floodgates even further at our ports to show "no hard feelings"!?! Do us all a favor and take your lack of logic opinions and move far, far away... What say the Congo, or Sudan?

I am outraged every time I hear someone echo Ms. Quindlen's trope that "...no injustice or prejudice brought to bear by this country against its own people can compare with how it has treated black men and women." I reject this statement totally. Aside from the fact that human suffering is not a contest, as the statement implies, I would argue that it was worse for the American Indian tribes. Slavery and Jim Crow were beyond reprehensible, of course, but in all of my historical studies I have never encountered the use of bayonettes against African slave children, the giving of small-pox infected blankets to African slave communities, the institutionalized kidnapping of African slave children to "Americanize" them in Christian schools, nor the waging of outright war against the slaves. All of these, and much more, were committed against the Indian tribes. They are all episodes in the larger picture that modern scholarship now calls "the American Holocaust." By all means, repudiate the evils and tragedies of the past, but please do not emphasize some at the expense of others.

    Anything can happen in America???

You can literally be ANYBODY and win an election, something that I bet a lot of lazy (and criminally inclined) children will be happy to learn. From now on, experience, knowledge, intelligence, character, associations, intentions, substance, and demeanor will be irrelevant, if you are fortunate enough to belong to an ethnic minority that the Media wishes to promote and that enough European Americans can feel guilty for.

In this first (and probably not last) AFFIRMATIVE ACTION election, we have discovered that if you promise enough nonsense to those who are desperate for a handout, you can be victorious. We have discovered that when you allow the spread of ignorance, entitlement, and irresponsibility throughout an entire population, you can reach very high (note to self when selling any product!).

Yesterday was the beginning of the end for the United States of America. We are only left to see what we can create from the ashes of this entire mess. WE will have to get ready for the tornado that is about to hit us, and be ready to take over from the mindless hordes that now dominate our land.

Will many of these same ???AmeriCONS???, as I will now call them, ever learn?

Yesterday, people elected a clone of Mr. 2000 and 2004. An unprepared empty suit of a man, whom we shall forever call the Affirmative Action Bush (AA Bush for short).

What will be our next step?

mr. obama's election is remarkable only because it destroyed the dream of a great american. Dr. King wanted for all people to be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. mr. obama hid his true character by deeming his past affiliations with terrorists, racist anti-americans, and communists to be distractions from the issues. he squashed freedom of speech by insisting that to question his record or his judgement was racist. he was determined to be the first black president and his ambition was more important that what was good for our country. he encouraged millions of people to vote for him not because of the content of his character but because of the color of his skin.

This is amazing the mindset of these few people. I am truly blessed not to have such a mindset. I am blessed to have a soul of love for everyone. As a woman of color, I could get all upset by the comments but for the first time, I am not moved. Why? Because Obama has me and many many others that you don't wear your emotions on your shoulders. Obama taught me to keep calm cool and collected though your opponent hurls many verbal blows. A strong mental and emotional shield can protect one from such verbal blows. I rejoice today because its a new day. As Obama said, "For those of you who did not vote for me, I WILL be your President too!" So no matter what, you have to suck it up and accept the fact that none of Obama's predessors have been smart enough nor capable enough to handle the job they were given. They have driven this country into a deep economic disaster. Instead of leading this country with intelligence and dignity and power they have lead with hatred and greed. They have worn their human emotions on their sleeve and we all have felt it. Not just blacks but all Americans whether Black or White or whatever. Many of you will not admit it because its just plain shameful to accept the fact that the ones before Obama were not capable. I hear many people say that Obama is not experienced. Well, according to the Constitution it does not call for a President to be experienced. It simply states that he has to be a U.S. Citizen and at least 35 years of age. It does not list experience as part of the criteria to be president. Anyone can run for President. I truly feel in my heart and in my soul that America made the right choice! Not because Obama is black but because I know that this man will do the job. The world knows he will bring about change. The whole world rejoices for Obama. No other president has been so welcomed by the world as Obama.

not to diminish what you say, I'm sure your proud and your right this country did prove that racism is much declined but i have to say I believe that the majority of the country has not been racist for 15-20 years. but our gripe nothing to do with race if you look into the posts here no one says he is bad because he is black it is because of his posicies and what he plans to do now. I am proud that we showed that we are not racist but sad that in a time of finacial crisis that we rushed to the dem party for help.... I truly hope obama proves my fears wrong

      • Posted By: mk2924 @ 11/08/2008 7:25:50 PM

Jason - there are many posts here that say people only voted for Obama because he is black. Many did, no doubt, but those who did would have voted Dem or stayed home. Many did not.

I was also perturbed reading Anna Quindlen's statement saying: "No injustice or prejudice brought to bear by this country against its own people can compare with ... Though this is true, it is rather incomplete. What about Native-Americans? It seems to me that native-Americans are completely ignored and what they suffered and still endure is just swept under the rug again and again. The election of Obama is a wonderful achievement for the USA but the native-American genocide can't be just ignored. I'd like to read more papers about Native-Americans more often in Newsweek. Who really knows that Native-Americans were granted citizenship only in 1924?

  • Posted By: hnoyes @ 11/08/2008 9:13:03 AM

Quindlen is wrong. "No injustice or prejudice brought to bear by this country against its own people can compare with how it treated" Native Americans. Ethnic cleansing and genocide done to them was orders of magnitude greater than what was done to African Americans.

Chris Matthews shows his true colors. Talk about an ongoing free pass!:
Matthews: "I Want To Do Everything I Can To Make This...New Presidency Work"

matthews_11-6b.jpgChris Matthews appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe this morning to discuss Rahm Emanuel's decision to announce he has not yet accepted President-Elect Barack Obama's offer for White House Chief of Staff and other Obama-related stories.

But after some questioning by co-host Joe Scarborough, Matthews said, "I want to do everything I can to make this thing work, this new presidency work."

"Your job as a journalist is to make this presidency work?" asked Scarborough.

Scarborough, co-host Mika Brzezinski and guest Richard Stengel continued the conversation about a journalist's role with Matthews throughout the interview. Stengel described the "constitutional responsibility" of journalists to "hold his feet to the fire."

I'm sorry to say this, but when in this election, people pretended to think that Obama's tax proposals were on the gross, not the net (as I saw numerous times on various web discussion boards) I had to say: surely you know better, and are deliberately trying to sow confusion and fool voters. Gary N.

  • Posted By: BobConway @ 11/07/2008 7:56:24 AM

    Jasen,

Since the operative word is "make," that would have to mean net income, not gross. If your business has total revenues of $1,000,000 and it costs you $900,000 to operate your business, then you only "make" $100,000 and will qualify for the Obama tax cut. If part of that $900,000 expenditure went toward hiring three new employees, then you'll get an additional tax break of $3,000 for each of them. And since each of them also will get a tax cut, more cash will be flowing into the economy as they spend their paychecks.

If you are fortunate enough to clear over $250,000, then good for you! Not only will you enjoy a higher standard of living than 90% of us do, but you'll be contributing more both toward the common good in the short run and in helping us all control America's national debt for the long term, for which your great-great grandchildren and mine will be grateful.

  • Posted By: iooi @ 11/06/2008 8:17:55 PM

I hate to disagree with you karenabcde I am also someone who has to file a Schedule C. We can complain about how tax increases will stop us from hiring more people. However, thruthfully unless we have the demand for our products and services we will not have the ability to hire more people. Everytime I read complaints about raising the taxes of the rich it makes me picture all Amaricans sitting at a table. Policies that pour more soup into the bowls of the rich hoping that they will overflow and leave scraps for the rest not only seem wrong but they have not worked.

    • Posted By: jasen the mason @ 11/07/2008 5:17:40 AM

      2500000 material costs 33% 83,000
      166000 payroll 3 employee's 103,000
      63,000 Ins. gas 20,000
      43,000 tax 25% 10750 = 32250
      43,000 tax 31% (as under clinton)13300=29700
look in terms or realized money that is a 10% change in my income that hurts

  • Posted By: ColOp @ 11/06/2008 10:31:37 PM

i've been working for about 7.25 to 7.75 hr for four months. I know people working for this wage who cannot even afford rent. It's hard for me to understand how the rich don't believe that if people are paid more they will go out of business. There seems to be a lot of room for growth in an economy if we don't just create a tax structure that reflects gross wage inequality but also reduce wage inequality by raising the minimum wage.
An equivalent wage to 1968 would be 9.60 hr. What is going on right now is sheer explotation.

think for a second..... raise pay for employee's means raising prices on consumers when my cost for materials go up so does my rate its common sense... like i said i went to obama's site i looked at his tax plan he doesn't say gross or net 250,000 my business LLC grosses over 250 after all my overhead paying employee's INS. gas material i make around 45,000 as you can plainly see i get up at 5am go to the job at 7 leave at 5 do paper work till 7. I want to make more money too but it takes hard work...and dont give me that you make under 250 stuff because like i said he never stated gross or net

President-Elect Obama is intelligent, well-educated, steady, calm, cool and collected, speaks eloquently, inspires and raises people up to see new possibilities, and fills us with hope. He has a playful sense of humor and three happy females who keep him on track as loving husband and father. He surrounds himself with bright people, brilliant in their fields of specialty. He would have been elected even if he were white, with the above qualities he possesses!

Anna, a very eloquently written Last Word regarding the US presidential campaign of 2008.

It was a year that the young US Senator from the Land of Lincoln traveled across the nation and abroad to spread his inspirational messages of Hope to the American people to seek support for his vision of Change You Can Believe In. His determination and hardwork paid off as his messages resonated with America's middle-class families of all races, as he was decisively elected the 44th US President of the United States of America. President-elect Obama befttingly returned home to his home state of Illinois to give his historic acceptance speech before a sea of 200,000 people gathered in a beautiful Chicago park, named after yet another Civil War era President from Galena, IL, Ulysses S. Grant.. Barack Obama's campaign journey began in the midwestern Illinois capital city of Springfield and concluded in the President-elect's home town of Chicago, Illinois. God Bless America.

  • Posted By: karenabcde @ 11/06/2008 6:07:43 PM

Hi Jason the Mason--I also was thinking Obama never defined net or gross. As I was reading your post it occurred to me he probably does not know there is a difference because all he has ever been paid is what he gets on his paystub and he probably does not know what a Schedule C is.

Most Democrats do not know what a Schedule C is, as I think about it. Because they are all employees. And then Biden says it's $150000 and then someone else close to Obama said it was $120000.

I think all of you Democrats who think we business people are selfish should study the IRS code and Scedule C so you have at least some idea of what we business people have to go through. If you think you can absorb all the rules and regulations -state, federal, city, and county are easy to know about try it sometime.

The business rules governing small business do not end either with just federal, city, county, and state tax laws. Then you have to worry about licensing fees and continuing education to keep the license and OSHA regulations and ERISA regulations and whether or not you have fiduciary liability for someone's retirement money....we have to provide some advice, but not partisan advice and if we provide too much advice or too little advice we can get in trouble. Then think about employees who may be unhappy about something. We try to keep them happy and we try to follow all the rules but if small business does one small thing wrong we can get fined.

Now consider that Obama wants small business to be forced to have a union boss come in and sign up the employees for a union whicn can set wages (maybe the small employer just plain can't afford it) so Obama wants there to be "open ballots". I'm not going to explain it all here, but go read about it. It will give you some idea of why small business is terrified.

Take me for example-I would like to hire another person right now, but I won't. I will do the work myself at night and weekends. I don't know what Obama will do but I know he does not like businesses and I know from what he has said he doesn't understand them. You can hear on the news there is the highest unemployment claims this month in 25 years. And if you think this is all from President Bush, you are way wrong. Bush is the friend of businesses. The combination of Obama and the economy is overwhelming. Good luck finding a job. Don't hate use for this. I don't care to work 16 hour days but it's better than getting sued for something I could not control.
