Most Americans are proud of their country all the time. People like you apparently are only proud when something extremely liberal happens. While I agree that electing a half black man as President shows that racsim in America has declined greatly , I hardly need an event like this to be proud of my country. I was proud when I served in the Nam, I'm proud when we rush to the aid of other countries in time of war or natural disaster, I'm proud when we send volunteerss, supplies and money to help fight disease and hunger around the world. I'm proud when we hold elections where every man and woman is afforded an equal vote. I'm proud of our democracy where a person from any background can be successful through hard work and perseverence. And I'm even proud when we provide a forum for idiots in Hollywood to exercise free speech and tell everyone how horrible our country is. Yes America is not perfect and we have to constantly improve ourselves. But we are the strongest and most benevolent country on Earth, and I'm proud of America every day of the year. You should try it.

Can you please tell me what the "content of Barack Obama's character" is?

Content of anyone's character is for your to decide and only you.

And where is this happening? I haven't heard any news reports of this!

Thank you, Monte Cristo. I hope peace will come easily w/ President Obama, and the Olive Branch will be very fruitful.

Hmm, why aren't young african americans inspired and motivated by the black people that are congressmen, senators, governors, doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers, astronauts, teachers, journalists, police officers, firefighters, and professionals of every possible field? Will the idolization of hip hoppers and athletes disappear and problems of the black community be erased because a black man is President? I hope that President Barack Obama calls upon the black community to DEMAND the personal responsibility and hard work ethic from its own members that earned him all that he has become. It was not given to him or denied to him because of his race...HE EARNED IT through determination, adherence to family values, and good old fashioned hard work. In four years what will we say when despite the highest office in the world being held by a black man, our black communities remain unchanged, ravaged by crime and wasted youth?

I did not vote for Obama, but I will give him the respect he has as the new president, unlike what liberals did to Bush. My only hope is Obama governs from the center. We will all be better off. If not, Democrats will start losing seats in 2010.

Where do I fit in? My great-grandfather, Jesse, was a resident of Winston County, Alabama yet he walked north to join the 56th Illinois. He marched through Georgia with Sherman. Apparently, in our rush to wash ourselves clean of the sins of slavery, we have forgotten that each person is an individual and must be judged on their merits.

What we see today is a rush not to judge on the merits. Obama's list of friends reveals the most corrupt group of people ever associated with a president. His presidency will be found no less corrupt than that of Ulysses S. Grant. Obama's mentor of twenty years is a proponent of Black Liberation Theology. We could as well have elected someone whose mentor is the leader of the KKK.

We are about to see the greatest transfer of wealth in history. Bazillions of dollars are going to the African-American community and those dollars are coming from the non-African-American community. Do they deserve it. Should we pay reparations for slavery? One cannot know because the question cannot be debated. We live in a country ruled by PC and the primary method of PC is to rule questions out of debate rather than debating.

So, Sweetie, got any answers for me?

The only thing that I have to say is that Freedom Is lost with a wave and a smile. We saw it when Hitler and others were elected. Please remember that Democracy is not freedom. Abiding by Principles creates Freedom and we as a country have long Forgotten the principles that this country was founded on. We need to stop thinking in the terms of Dumbocrat or Recraplicain. But actually look at the people we elect and what their principles are. What we will find will scare and Frighten all free thinking people. Enjoy your celebrations but the Hangover will be Hell!!!

qwertt - you must have been watching a far different presidential race than the rest of us all of these months.

the youth, the minorities, and yes - even plenty of white people let their voices be heard (and counted) yesterday. President Obama represents a new generation of Americans and the true future of America... a country that may finally live up to its billing of equal opportunity, all men and women being created equally, etc.

America has preached these values for years and now it is starting to take shape. If the unity and hope shown by Obama's supporters throughout this election angers/scares you so much than you are setting yourself up for a disappointing future. America will only continiue to become more diverse and mixed, more open-minded, and more tolerant and more progressive because that is all that we have been preaching to our children for years and this is a defining moment in that rhetoric. You should be proud to call yourself American on this day.

Obama represents the worst in American politics--a lying demagogue and snake-oil salsesman who said nothing of substance, just vague platitudes. He's repeatedly covered his tracks with a web of deceit and spin regarding his close, abiding associations with the worst that America has to offer (Ayers, Rezko, Khalidi). He'll abandon our true allies (e.g., Israel), appease terrorist monsters. He rode to victory with this great con of a campaign on the backs of the shallow, self-centered, current "me" generation who are ignorant of history, obsessed with their IPods and texting, and who are devoid of any real intellectual rigor or sophistication. I'm saying this as a lifelong democrat who worked for JFK and marched in civil rights marches. This is the saddest day of my life.

ms. quinlend: the truth and ssoulfulness of your sentiments are, as always, brilliant. however, by the comments posted here I can see that we still have work to do. but for now, just for a moment, we can relax, savor the moment and say, Yes We Did!

    • Posted By: doctorfixit @ 11/05/2008 11:18:44 AM

Don't get too comfortable. Bush gave us Obama as a parting shot. Who do you think manipulated the financial crash/bailout? I give Obama about 6 months before people begin to understand that he is Hitler and Stalin reincarnated.

  • Posted By: chazer @ 11/05/2008 10:15:06 AM

All I have to say is that we better stop pointing fingers at each other and help Obama make this one of the best presidencies ever. How can we do that? By having Republicans keep the guy honest and make sure he doesn't lean too much to the left. Democrats by making sure that he delivers in some of the most pressing needs this country has and which have been promises of his campaign: more and better jobs, energy self reliance, regaining international relevance and respect, improving our infrastructure and education and being tough on the real terrorists and not waste our time, soldiers lives and resources in places we have no business being in. Moping around and being afraid of what he *MIGHT* do, will not help this country. Hating one another because we are "too darn liberal" or "too darn conservative" is not going to help us. Defining who is being racist is not going to help us (keep in mind that it won't be long before there is no true racial majority, so we better start shifting that paradigm). This fellow, whether justified or not, has the goodwill of the world and of good portion of young voters who are the future of our country. Let's see this as an opportunity that we have to make something out of it. How many times have we been blessed with such a headstart after an election? Let's make the most of it together!

I will resist this Hitler with every tool I can grab.

    • Posted By: qwertt @ 11/05/2008 10:33:21 AM

All I have to say to this is where was the sprit of cooperation the last 8 years? Now that the Dumbocrats are in complete power we are all supposed to be happy and work together. If people would have acted the way they are talking now the world would be much different. What Hypocrites.

      • Posted By: chazer @ 11/05/2008 10:52:39 AM

This can go both ways. There was no willingness from the White House to listen to dissenting voices either. It is hard to cooperate if your opinion does not matter. Just look at the international arena: pretty much every country on Earth was opposed to the Iraq invasion and Bush imposed his will. Heck, we even renamed french fries for crying out loud. How about backing away from a commitment to sign the Kyoto Treaty? I'm actually kind of relieved that there was not more cooperation then, because this world would have gone down the toilet if everyone had listen to Bush. This is why I'm saying, keep Obama honest, remain vigilant, be a skeptic if you will, but give him the benefit of doubt.

Here is an interesting article that might put some perspective on my comments

Democrats have been in control of Congress for two years. The collapse of the stock market, the subprime mess and foreclosures occurred on their watch. Bush should be held accountable also. But to say that it is all republican is disingenuos. Chris Dodd and Barney Frank are two of the biggest culprits in this mess yet the media lets them off and focuses on Bush.

And Obama brings hope to about half the population. Unfortunately his message of hope is not backed by a single plan with a history or chance of success. Socialism has not worked in any other country and it won't work here. When he starts taxing my business more, I have no incentive to grow it. I will do everything I can to keep my current employees working and provide good benefits since they have helped me get to where I am. But with a higher corporate and personal tax likely coming, as well as payroll taxes that will be more onerous, there is no reason to work harder and grow my business so I can turn the rewards over to Obama. I would rather spend that time relaxing if I don't recieve any benefit. Most business owners will draw the same conclusion and we will not see jobs created.

The other half of the country had hope through McCain. That he would continue to provide an America safe from terrorist attacks, a government that does not tax the business owner into submission and a nation where the fruit of hard work is rewarded not redistributed. The only hope Obama provides is the hope that once he realizes he can't vote Present anymore, he will make good decisions. His voting record indicates otherwise.

Anna Quindlen acts like this is the most racist country in the world. I'm afraid that unlike MLK's assertion that you should judge a person my the content of their character and not the color of ones skin, that the american people including Ms. Quindlen, did the exact opposite. For surley Obama's character was highly questionable and many people voted for him exactly because they saw voting for a black man was "historic".

    • Posted By: doctorfixit @ 11/05/2008 11:13:03 AM

This is the most racist country in the world, if you consider the anti-European-American racism of our government, the blacks, the Mexicans, the Asians and the Muslims put together.

  • Posted By: doctorfixit @ 11/05/2008 11:10:59 AM

This is a horrible tragedy for Americans, who were deluded into voting for a marxist baby butcher anti-European-American racist. Our Constitution is lost, our freedom will be taken from us by the liberal fascists unless we resist with evry fiber of our being. Freedom-lovers, unite, joint the fight against the liberal haters of America.

Sadly, as much as African-Americans had to go through in the past, many of the current day issues affecting them are a product of their own doing. Our forefathers fought to clear the way for us to do better and be better, and while some do strive to be the best they can be (as with President-elect Obama), far more are adding to the deterioration in our communities, through drugs, violence, ignorance and simple laziness. Far too many black men are not MEN anymore, satisfied to be grown up little boys. For the children these "grown little boys" leave in their wake to grow up without a father involved, leaders such as Obama provide a positive role model. They show that with hard work and perserverance, no matter what your origins are, no matter what situations existed in your anything is achievable... even the highest office in the nation.

It is in my opinion, racism that got Mr. Obama elected. Yesterday, millions of Americans chose to look past the issues, ignore the warning signs, and pull the lever for a man because of his skin color, rather than the content of his character. Now for the next four years, (at least) we will be subjected to the biggest shift toward Marxist rule this country has ever had. We have forgotten our responsibility to preserve the constitution, and now it will be under greater threat of revisionism than ever before. Look for the whittling down of our freedom of speech, the press and religion. That is for those of us who disagree with the new powers that be. Look for the already troubled economy, brought to you by the folks who brought us the housing bubble and the credit crisis, to be put under increasing strain by higher taxes, bigger government and much, much more spending. WAKE UP AMERICA!!

    • Posted By: anotherignorantamerican @ 11/05/2008 9:58:46 AM

If Obama won by racism, then McCain lost through stupidity. Quit your complaining and suck it up...

      • Posted By: nimodahooligan @ 11/05/2008 10:59:13 AM

        ZINGER!!!!

all of your points against obama are riddled with republican guilt as well...

our massive government would never allow this country to change radically that way...he would be assasinated before our government would allow a marxist country to rise...foolish to think that way

  • Posted By: SamMcGowan @ 11/05/2008 10:05:35 AM

Give me a flipping break! Obama didn't win because of his race. He won because of the sub-prime mortgage crisis that drove the US and World economy down the tank. Spare us all of this baloney about how the country has changed, blah, blah, blah. Take a look at the map - Obama's support came from tiny islands of blue in a vast sea of red just as the Democrats supports always has. Change? The only thing that has changed is now the Democrats will have no one to blame for the nation's problems but themselves. Of course liberal journalists will blame everything on those who aren't "with the program."

    • Posted By: nimodahooligan @ 11/05/2008 10:55:26 AM

those "vast seas of red" were sparsley populated states...obama won most of the eastern sea board my friend, some of the most populated and developed places in the world...and on the west as well, and right here in MN...you have no argument...

and you have the capacity to make informed decisions regarding the country??

    • Posted By: anotherignorantamerican @ 11/05/2008 10:11:21 AM

Tiny islands of blue in a vast red sea? Are you kidding me or are you just dense? Do you mean the tiny islands of Florida and California? Or those in the entire northeast and Ohio valley? Oh wait I get it you think that the size of the state is all that matters, not the number of people who live there. Obviously you get it and the rest of the country doesn't. Wow thank god you figured it out.

  • Posted By: elnino @ 11/05/2008 9:44:37 AM

mellyfromaz, don't be affraid. If you are as conservative as you say you are make sure you teach your doughter good values. Don't make the same mistake Sarah Palin made with her doughter. Most Republicans claim to be so conservative just to get your vote but in reality they're a bit hypocritical. Be happy that out country is moving forward from years of idiocy and failed policies that have gotten our country in real trouble. I hope our troops come back soon, they should have never gone there in ther first place... and I still doubt that Obama will call them back without finishing the job.

    • Posted By: TJeff_gettoknowhim @ 11/05/2008 9:55:30 AM

condescension + arrogance + ignorance = Obama supporter

elnino - I don't know if you have kids, heck, maybe you are still a kid (maybe someone's "doughter"), but people have free will. As a mother of 4, I know that there is only so much control I have over my children, especially once they are teens. Having been a teen once, I know that if I had lived the way my parents wanted me to and taught me to, I would have made many fewer mistakes and been a much happier young adult. However, no matter what parents try to teach their children, the fact is they are going to make mistakes. It doesn't make one a bad parent, it just proves that people make mistakes. Ever made a mistake, elnino? I'll bet it was your mom's fault, huh?

      • Posted By: elnino @ 11/05/2008 10:22:33 AM

It was bad on my part to use the Sarah Palin's example, I was just trying to reply to mellyfromaz's comment about him being affraid for his doughter having a choice for abortion without him knowing about it. It is great to live in a country where you have choices, too much conservativism is counter productive. If you start taking choices away from people because they don't agree with your so called conservative values, you lose freedoms.

    • Posted By: BHussein @ 11/05/2008 9:48:33 AM

Hypocrital for a woman who is against abortion to support her daughter when she decides not to have an abortion. That doesn't seem very hypocritical to me. But keep casting your self righteous stones. I guess it is truly horrible for an 18 year old to have a baby with her fiance'. Wow, alert the press, call Guiness Book of world Records...a young American woman is having a baby with her fiance'. What a scoop.

  • Posted By: kwigster @ 11/05/2008 10:19:21 AM

The American people have spoken and I for one am thankful that we have chosen a different path. No person can know what the next four years will hold but at least with Barack Obama we have a sense of hope. He brought that to us. To me. To my daughters. I know I am inspired to keep that sense alive and to hold his feet to the fire. If Senator McCain had been elected, this sense of hope would not have been there. I am often proud of my country, but I often wonder if the people bother to care. I saw millions of people care yesterday and I am hopeful that will continue.
