Palins clothes - forget a consignment shop. Auction them to the highest bidder. I'm reasonably sure she has fans who would think it well worth whatever they pay for the clothes. Then donate the $$$ to foodbanks. There are plenty of people going hungry right now, right here in America.

"GregAugustaGA": That my concerns about Palin became contempt has nothing to do with sexism.

Her fumbles, as only one example, were spectacular and impossible to explain away.

There was a reason why McCain soon chose not to allow her to be interviewed alone. It had nothing to do with sexism on anyone's part. It only had to do with McCain's concerns about her.

I see some comments and concern about McCain not defending Palin against the remarks made by his campaign aides. Could it be because what they are saying is true and he's tired of defending her??

I can't wait for the book!!! As for Sarah's clothes.. I just read a report that the RNC has sent a staffer to Alaska to inventory and retrieve the clothing. Look, I think the shopping spree was excessive. If there was a limit someone should have told her, or the staffers who were in charge. No doubt it really was necessary to buy a few things for the kids as well since the way they dress in AK is not the way they dress at the RNC or in Washington and people expect a certain standard from candidates at this level. Okay, so the RNC screwed up and allowed Palin to spend wayyyy too much money but to take the clothes back is sort of ridiculous. But then the RNC hasn't shown much class lately anyway. Thank Heaven Obama won.

From what I've read the instructions were pretty clear, 3 suits for the convention and 3 more for the road and one for Todd. That should'nt have equaled $25K . She blantantly abused the privildege while many Americans she claims to relate to and be just like (hockey mom/Joe 6-packs) are fighting for their homes. How many hockey mom/Joe 6-packs even make that much money in a year? Heck, even the $40K she spent on Todd is more than many of these folks make in a year, as a museum professional its more than I make in a year!

      • Posted By: MickieMac @ 11/10/2008 4:50:34 PM

Don't forget, Schipperke, that she can't just keep the clothes, although she can buy them from the RNC. It's against the law to keep anything personal purchased with funds from campaign donations (McCain-Feingold). So the clothes must go back to the RNC to return if not worn, to donate to charity, or to sell to Palin.

I read this entire piece in Newsweek this weekend. One of the best things I've ever read, and I'm keeping the issue for posterity. Well done!!!

I find it very interesting that Palin (now back home) in an interview with the Ankorage Daily News is still claiming to be the victim in all of this. She has not owned up to anything. She mentions that she hasn't ruled out a run in 2012. She also states that she has no regrets about the per-diem and charging the State for her children's travel. There are people on record stating that her children were not invited and these were not "first-family" events. The kids are not invited, and Palin finds no problem lying on these expense reports that they were "first family" events. I guess Palin is the "decider" on what is legally/ethically correct. That is scary.

How odd, why do some people not believe that candidates are only human. I did not vote for McCain because he voted against supporting the Armed Forces and against supporting veterans. Look at his record. He likes war but thinks human beings are cannon fodder, he has issues. He was also voting contrary to TWO planks in the Republican Platform. Palin is, unfortunately, too early into this fray and showed her base party colors instead of hiding them. But again, had Sarah been Todd with the same interviews and actions, he wouldn't have been it as far as Governor of Alaska, remember it appears Sarah's first qualier is "She's attractive." Good grief, Charlie Brown!

to louise manila - don't compare mccain's patriotism to barack obama's - we are trying to get past that now; anyway, wasn't sara palin's husband a member of the party wanting to break off from the united states?? thanks from margie in san diego

This was one of the best pieces I have ever read. I'm recommending it to everyone and buying multiple copies of the print edition when it's available. I particularly appreciated the insight into the McCain campaign. Many Obama supporters saw John McCain as a cynical opportunist, and were especially contemptuous of his pick of Sarah Palin. This piece made it seem that he picked her in good faith for qualities that he admired, and that from his point of view he had plausible reason to dislike and distrust Obama. I'm glad to be able to see McCain's action in the light of someone who genuinely cares for his country, rather than someone who would do anything to win an election. But then my guy won - I'm feeling pretty magnanimous about everyone (except Palin)! Thank you, Newsweek, for a gripping, informative piece of writing. Stellar job!

Keep looking for and expecting those neat little human interest stories by the reporter and cameraman that followed Palin through all the Macy???s and Neiman Marcus as she dashed off the campaign trail to do all that shopping.

Of course being from tje North Pole she probably borrowed that sleigh from her neighbor that no one has a picture of, but we know he's real.to do her shopping.

Really expected some neat little interviews with the clerks who helped her with the clothing purchases, and breaking news mews on whether she wore boxers or briefs..

Thought that might be a nice little touch to add to the sidebar on the clothes horse and diva complaints.

I know that if she had really done all that shopping your great investigative reporters would have been right there by her side..

Unless, of course, it???s more fun to tear someone down with hearsay and innuendo.

Are we ever going to let up and give up the obsession with kicking Palin?

I would be equally nice if the names of the witnesses to the towel thing were publiched.

That story has already been debunked, but leave it to Newsweek to keep repeating fiction rather than news.

You got your wish - The American People have gotten what we deserve again - Let up on the lady.

We really don't believe that story we heard from an unanmed source that the Newsweek reporter who wrote this piece regularly met the school bus with sacks of candy.

But- he hasn't denied it yet.

We'll wait for the breaking new on that one too.

It was interesting to get some behind the scenes events during the campaign cycle. We just see what the MSM feeds us. I am hungry for more. It is fascinating.

It's so popular nowadays to rave about Obama and the promise he holds not just for the USA, but for the rest of the world, but reading this article makes me kind of rueful about the kind of leader McCain could have been. He has acquianted himself most graciously with the hardships involved with campaigning and the election, and has been very humble about his defeat. His patriotism is something that Obama can aspire to.

No. Secrets. Americans have chosen right president to lead 21 century.
If Americans have chosen McCain. WWIII probably have happened.
It was wise choice for Americans to choose Obama for president.

So let's see, did any reporters see Sarah shopping at Saks and Neimans? or is this just another made up story you guys like to make up and spread? You would think that SOME, ANY "reporter" would have been following Sarah after the important nomination. How about a store clerk? anyone?? , anyone??
Ohhhhh, sooo top secret that even the store people never saw her. She was so slick she slipped right by all those crack "reporters" and went shopping for HOURS! She must have been wearing her invisible cloak and stopped time Because she certainly did not have time to "SHOP for HOURS!

Wow! the Dems must really be afraid of Sarahs future in politics, they just can't let it go.
I love how they make up these stories from un-named sources to try to slime Sarah.
We are not buying it. You guys can go *** yourselves at any time now.
This whole report shows that you do not know how to deal with someone we all LOVE and has a GREAT future in the GOP! All the Libs /Dem picking on her and making up stories are just afraid of her because she is a RISING STAR and you know she is going to be a huge threat in the future.

LIBERALS are SAD Petty little PATHETIC people! Or are thy just stupid people that believe anything that they are told or read in the Liberal Bias MSM.

Good Job Left wing media! You Blew it with all your BIAS so called reporting.

Now go do a little real investigating on Vera Baker, Obamas Mistress hiding out in the Island of Martinique. She is 34 yr old. The BRITISH papers are reporting on Obie better then you!!
Or maybe something on Obamas campaigning for his cousin Odinga, in Kenya, and is behind killing thousands of Christians.
Obie used Tax payers money for that. Anyone, anyone?

GOOD JOB Obama Media! Good Job!

We still LOVE SARAH, We do not believe you guys anymore. You have absolutely no credibility.

By the way a reporter that was on her plain and following the campaign, has reported that Sarah was well aware of geography and other issues that someone tried to slime her with.

Spreading rumors is not the same as "reporting".

moniqueO, I don't know where you are getting your facts re: Kenya and Obama's involvement in the campaigns but you must stop with the rumours and misinformation. He did not campaign for anyone, Odinga is not his cousin and the post election violence had absolutely nothing to do with religion. You were clearly misled by wherever you decided to source your ???info??? from. And this is not coming from the left wing media you talk of but by a Kenyan. I hope that someday these untruths will go away.

Apart from that, thanks Newsweek for your articles. They have given this foreigner a whole lot of insight into the world of American politics.

Palin IS a huge threat- to the Republican Partys future!!! Monique- it wasn't the MSM, or Mccain or even Palin who lost this thing- it was the REPUBLICAN party pandering to the far RIGHT WING!! If you think the party does not need moderates to win CHECK THE HEADLINES!! Face reality- it is time for reflection. Blaming others is a sur way to avoid the truth. Big gov't-NO. Free enterprise-YES! Legislating MORALITY- NO WAY

    • Posted By: moniqueO @ 11/07/2008 3:36:45 AM

PLANE, as in airplane (sorry for those idiots that can't figure out typo *** up and are really really confused right now.)

    • Posted By: moniqueO @ 11/07/2008 3:32:12 AM

      Jealous LIBERAL!

No one really liked McCain as the pick, we were stuck with him. Everyone was just going to just be voting AGAINST Obie. Until Palin was chosen. Palin was the only one that brought everyone together and enthused about voting.
The Libs know this so they make up stories and lies and try to convince people if they repeat them enough times that the stories are true. Typical Stalinist move. or was that the Nazis?

Sorry, Media sliming just not working!

You say the stories came from inside, name the person talking this trash and find out what their motive is and get back to me. I am sure it is not a true GOPer, because the stories are made up lies. Whoever is "leaking" this stuff is lying and the "reporters" don't give a rats ass if any of it is true.
A reporter on the trail w/Palin said none of this Ignorant about the countries stuff was true and saw none of this behavior from her. The reports of her not knowing about Africa was a total Lie and now everyone thinks it is a true story. ESPECIALLY the Liberals, like you, because the want to believe she is stupid.
Kind of like the she was burning books story. I have Lib friends that totally still believe it. They don't care when the facts are found to be a different story, they have moved on to a different lie they want to believing.
