Fantastic piece of writing! If this was ever expanded into a book, I'd definitely buy it. It's the most balanced and nuanced portrayal of the elections that I've come across all year. - Rehan Ali, Oxford (UK)

???Aware!???: Those are some powerful adjectives you apply to Palin???

???Smart???. Almost immediately McCain decided that he didn???t dare allow her to be interviewed without him there, even though all the interviews were by those the campaign chose.

???Tough???. That???s why she whines that she ???only asked for a diet Dr. Pepper???, instead of explaining how those mean republicans were able to force upon her (you left out ???maverick???) over $150k of clothes she says she didn???t want.

???Transparent???. That???s why she repeatedly told the electorate that she told Congress ???no thanks??? to the Bridge To Nowhere, when in fact she took the federal tax funds that were earmarked for it.

???Genuine moral center???. She charges the government for per diem expenses while working from home. (So what???s her salary for?)

???Core American values???. Like firing the librarian when she said she was against book banning, and participating in a rite to protect her from invasion by witches.

???Ethics???. She campaigned on smears and fear.

???Inherent wisdom???. HA! Ok, ya got me. Your posting was a joke, right?

The ???pseudo intellectuals and the phony elitist wing of the GOP??? are picking on her. Getting right down to that there ???base??????

I voted for McCain/Palin. But McCain's weakness in refusing to deal with thuggish attacks on Governor Palin have reduced him to a guy with a lack of intestinal fortitude. He may have had it once but he has lost it!

I am neither a democrat nor a republican because both parties have demonstrated cannibalization of their own.

Governor Sarah Palin was the only breath of life in the general election! She is an authentic reformer and may put a new face on the pseudo intellectual and phony elitist republican party. :)

If so, I will take a second look at the GOP!

I watched an almost spooky moment as Obama raised his arm over a mesmerized crowd when he gave his somber speech Tuesday night! The world has seen this before! :(

I am very sorry to see someone try to make a case for a comparison between any of our candidates and Hitler, however, if you were to be accurate, it would be Sarah Palin's efforts to cast Obama as 'too different' and as a threat - if there a comparison to be made, that is where it could be made more accurately.
I, too, wish that news outlets would quite 'picking on' Sarah Palin for her spending - or lack of spending - on clothes and really look at her record in Alaska. It is not nearly as wonderful as it is being portrayed. There is a crisis in rural Alaska where rural residents, the Alaska Natives who are owners of most of the state's resources are living in substandard conditions and paying unbelievably high prices for fuel, heating oil and other necessities. Palin's administration has contributed to this problem by doing NOTHING to move toward long term solutions - instead she pushed the energy rebate, that didn't even do urban residents that much good since the local gas company raised its rates by 20% as soon as our checks arrived. Palin has much more serious issues to resolve than where she buys her clothes.

    • Posted By: Writing from Alaska @ 11/08/2008 2:13:31 PM

Please, I live in Alaska and I wish people would quit obsessing over Sarah Palin - she is the one who has generated hateful rhetoric and sought to define her opponents as somebody different and to be feared - that is the similarity in the campaign, if there is one to Hitler, whom you are trying to conjure up for as comparison to Obama.
Palin has much more serious problems than wardrobe issues, and I, too would be very happy if the press would get over it and look at her real record in Alaska and at the crisis our rural areas are now experiencing, partly caused by her lack of foresight as a governor. The lives of real people suffering in substandard conditions and subject to enormous energy costs are more important no matter how much she spent - or didn't spend on clothes.

      • Posted By: Aware! @ 11/08/2008 2:37:55 PM

The pseudo intellectual and phony elitist wing of the GOP and the democrats would like to destroy Governor Sarah Palin as quickly as possible!

She is young, authentic, smart, tough, intuitive, likeable, transparent, easy to communicate with, has a genuine moral center, has core American values and ethics, has inherent wisdom, a record of change and reform, and is as normal and American as apple pie! :)

So, she is a huge threat to those who want to manipulate power to their advantage!

Governor Sarah Palin is a one-of-a-kind great leader! :)

Sorry for the double post, I had to register before the first one published and thought it had disappeared.
While the news folks are considering her real record, they might also take a good look at our election results. The polls were ALL OFF, if the results are to be believed, every one of them was wrong when they forecasted Democrats to take both the House and Senate seats. There is no other place in the country, according to our local paper, where the polls were off like they were here. What's up with that?

Who gives a damn about how much Palin spent on clothes? The Russian's and Chinese were busy hacking into the e-mail and downloaded security files and these bleeding heart liberals are worrying about clothes. Typical mentality!

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 11/08/2008 2:16:08 PM

"nicemom43": The attention to her clothes is about hypocricy from someone who whines that she "only asked for a diet Dr. Pepper", when she doesn't explain how republicans were able to force on her, a true maverick, over $150k of clothes she says she didn't want.

And one who campaigned on smears and fear.

And who repeatedly told the electorate that she told the electorate that she told Congress "no thanks" to the Bridge to Nowhere, when she took the federal tax funds that were earmarked for it.

      For starters...

In light of the post-election revelations from the McCain camp regarding Sarah Palin's many indiscretions, I couldn't help but make a preliminary diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the diagnostic classification system used in the United States, as "a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and a lack of empathy."

The narcissist is described as turning inward for gratification rather than depending on others and as being excessively preoccupied with issues of personal adequacy, power and prestige. Narcissistic personality disorder is closely linked to self-centeredness.

    DSM Criteria
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

has a grandiose sense of self-importance
is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
believes that he or she is "special" and unique
    requires excessive admiration
    has a sense of entitlement
    is interpersonally exploitative
    lacks empathy
is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her
shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

THAT WILL BE FIVE CENTS, PLEASE.

All the Sarah Palin 'shopping' stories don't pass the smell test. The woman was a top target for news media from the moment she entered the race. She couldn't move without coverage, we had coverage of her buying diapers at Walmart, buying a pumpkin by the side of the road, getting a cheese steak carryout sandwitch, buying ice cream. No stories about clothes shopping, though. Did anyone report on her showing up at a store and looking at clothes? I saw a story about a staffer rushing into a children's clothing store and buying a bunch of stuff, but no Palins.

So, we are to believe that this woman was so eager to go shopping (in the middle of the campaign) that she sent staff out to buy vast amounts of clothing for her? Anyone know women who send others out to pick out excessive amounts of clothing for her? Some women (and men) overshop for themselves, but sending out people to buy stuff at random? Hmm.

Much more reasonable is that someone was given the missing of 'dressing her up', went way overboard and is now trying to cover their a--. This dovetails with the accounts of Palin being upset at the price tags of the stuff she was presented with and her clear outrage at the charges. She claims to buy stuff for the family at the consignment store -- and I heard a phone interview with the owner of the store who agreed, commenting that Pallin was always on the phone while shopping.

"WilliamShipley": Could you please explain for me how in excess of $150k of clothes (if we can believe the republicans who say so) were forced upon a maverick? Or were they minions of the liberal press who were out to get her?

  • Posted By: dolorescranston @ 11/08/2008 10:24:12 AM

The "Can't we all just get along" method has never worked in this country. This term will be quite a show. Biden's gona have a hard time fitting in Palin's hot shoes.

The campaign is over. Now it is time for ALL politicians, and ALL of the public to pull together to FINALLY get some of the big problems solved. If Obama does nothing else but hack away at the partisan nature of politics, the 'me first mentality', the politicians who come to Washington and immediately succumb to the lobbyists, the gifts, and the freebie cocktail circuit, I'll be happy. To me, any political figure who won't get behind this man and try to help him, AND us, get out of this mess, including a 10 year plan for energy independence, well, that person will have proven that they DON'T care about the American people-and should be voted out of office. We're AMERICANS-let's start proving it by ceasing the sniping and focusing on the issues and problems at hand!

The McCain staffers are trying to blame their horrible job on anyone but them. Seriously. Who would hire anyone from that campaign?

As for Barrack, will he raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000? Will he raise capital gains taxes? Will all of the troops be out of Iraq in 16 months as promised? Will he reach across the aisle and do pro-republican legislation (that is what bi-partisan means)?
If he does not do as promised, he is a liar.

Remember his campaign promises. He promised everyone everything...the "rich" will give you everything...yeah, right. Wait and see.

I keep forgetting that the Great Messiah is ultra perfect, and that he holds no sins within himself. He does not cheat, lest for that affair with Vera Baker. He does not lie, lest we forgive that untruth about not knowing his illegal alien Auntie is still residing in Boston after being ordered Deported; Rezco, and all other Chicago affairs. He does not mislead anyone, with exception of the classification of middle class, which neither his VP or his surrogates can properly define, which at present means anyone earning under $120,000 a year.

The Almighty Messiah has finally arrived! This is better than the sliced bread, or Jesus Christ returning to save his people!

Get a grip people, Obama is not the cure all to our problems. The solutions lie within ourselves, as we ourselves caused this great financial crisis. Fiscal irresponsibility on the part of the masses put us in this giant mess. You can blame G W Bush all you want, but end of the day, it was the fools who kept flipping homes, bought overpriced homes, lied on mortgage applications, processed bogus mortgage applications and shifty and questionable foreign governments (playing investors) that got us in this mess.

So you can keep your Messiah, and I'll stay with reality.

Look into the mirror, and if you can see the fool standing there blaming the world for his/her problems, then you are finally seeing the truth!

KAMELCETIN, you and your ilk have been using the kind of 'tactics' you refer to for the past 8 years and the people of this country are fed up. That's why we elected Barack Obama because we were tired of business as usual. It's called democracy and if you don't like it, you're welcome to go set up your own totalitarian state somewhere else. As far as 'traitors' are concerned, if a man who got into good schools by working hard and then followed that up by helping poor people better their lot in life, and being a good husband and father to his own family is your idea of treason. . .You know something? I feel sorry for you!

  • Posted By: AlaskaVoter @ 11/07/2008 6:20:06 PM

The media is so busy trying to be FIRST with their report that they don't wait for ACCURACY.

The campaign staffers had items delivered; when Sarah said it was 'too much money', they overrode her.

Their elitism and arrogance re Sarah is obvious. They wanted someone else as VP nominee. It wouldn't have mattered WHO she was.

Bottom line: with friends like these, who needs enemies?

And I agree with WilliamShipley -- it doesn't pass the SMELL TEST. IF she had done any of these things the news 'hounds' would have seen it.
