Now that Obama has won, let us see if he can handle a job that does not mainly consist of angling for a higher office.
Now that Obama has won, let us see if he can handle a job that does not mainly consist of angling for a higher office.
He will do just fine. If you think the past president's were good and did not have experience. President Obama will do better because he's smart, and has the judgment not to rush into situations that can put the American people of other countries in harms way. God has Angels surrounded by this Presidents, and their is a job that he has to perform. Give him time to get his cabinet together and watch him work.

The kids really are alright. And not just the kids showed up.
First Read links to the voter-eligible population expert, Michael McDonald from George Mason University, who notes that the turnout percentage is awesome:
Provided the number stands, the turnout rate for yesterday's election was the highest in 100 years, according to the estimate from turnout guru Dr. Michael McDonald at George Mason University. Almost 137 million (136,631,825) went to the polls -- 64.1% of the voting-eligible population. 1960 saw 63.7% of the populace go out to vote; In 1908, 65.7% voted. It was, of course, the most people ever to go to the polls topping 2004's 122 million. That's 12% increase from 2004.
For those wondering why the current total vote in the presidential adds up to approximately 117 million, note that it's going to climb. There is still a ton of vote missing on the West coast.
However, it's not clear how big the total will be.
Curtis Gans, director of the nonpartisan Committee for the Study of the American Electorate at American University and dean of turnout experts, said his early numbers show 2008 to be about equal to or better than 1964, but not higher than 1960. He said it looks like total votes, once absentees are tallied (which could take a day or so), will be "somewhere between 134 and 135 million."
That's still the highest turnout in 40 years percentage wise (it was 60.1 of the voter-eligible population in 2004, and you have to go back to 1968 to get a figure that's at least 60%.)
From Prof. McDonald (more complete data here):
1960 63.8
1964 62.8
1968 62.5
1972 56.2
1976 54.8
1980 54.2
1984 55.2
1988 52.8
1992 58.1
1996 51.7
2000 54.2
2004 60.1
We commented this morning on the changing demographics ( less fewer whites.) In 2000, the exit polls put whites at 81%.
Maybe McCain's campaign would have worked better in 2000. Maybe what thwarted it was this:
There is a chance that American turnout will match or surpass the 1960 turnout, and if it does, that will mean approximately 136 million people voted. That raw number will be the most people who have ever voted in an American election.
Welcome to the 21st Century.
For many young Obama voters, they are simply too young to remember the world before the fall of the Berlin Wall and communism. The scariest part of that is not that we are in any danger of immediately becoming a communist or socialist state. It is that the path to a totalitarian state begins like this - with a media biased to a level not seen since the days of Pravda and Soviet TV. Media that will ignore relevant stories that might hurt their candidate, and that will put on the front page of newspapers - stories such as a middle class Governor, who campaigned in her home state in hunting flannels, getting a ???stage" wardrobe for her and her family to use while campaigning virtually non-stop for weeks.
Politics is like football. You have to play offense some times, and sometimes you have to play defense. The Democrats will be taking the ball and going on offense - and trotting onto the field are the leaders - Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama. (LOL!!!) All of these are so tied to their leftist agenda and base that they cannot possibly choose to govern from the middle - without that same base turning against them. Bill Clinton was a successful President because he was adept at "triangulating" - moving to adopt key Republican ideas such as Welfare Reform and balanced budgets. Obama does not have that luxury - and he is certainly far to the left from an ideological perspective as compared to Bill Clinton.
Obama may be far more like Jimmy Carter. He is already perceived as "weak" on foreign policy by our enemies - let alone his own running mate. (Anybody up for another Iranian Hostage Crisis?) He inherits a financial crisis born from Democratic policies to move Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into subprime loans beginning in the 1990's

you know this is the type of nonsense you people with no true understanding of politics have been ranting about throughout the election. give it a rest its over, America won, you lost! It's about time to change your screen name and take your bumper stickers off!
McCain in 08 should probably spend more time working with people and less time blogging on a computer if they expect to effect real change and not partisan sucksess.
Richard Pryor had keen insight when he said "White people are so stupid"
European style aristocracy and nobility in America!???
This presidential election has proven that America now has its own European style aristocracy; just in time for our crumbling economy, that would be the Hollywood elite.
And damn the average citizen!
When I worked for the City of Los Angeles, during the Clinton years it was bantered about that Barbara Streisand had her own private police department that would respond to her every whim, namely the L.A. County Sheriff???s Dept. I???m sure she and others will have that and much more with Obama under their obligation!
Obama's old friend and pastor ???Jeremiah Wright??? was so prophetic when he said "God damn America"
Your right we are stupid for letting people like you out of your hate box!!!! You should not work at a hog farm let alone for city or state agency!!!!
Mr. Obama's election demonstrates that Americans remain a vigorous, dynamic, and decent people.
I have seen on some internet discussion groups where Democratic voters praised Obama for being truthful. Obama truthful?? Exactly when did this occur? Was he truthful to the union coal miners in West Virginia when he discussed supporting clean coal technologies? - or Was he truthful when speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle when he plainly stated that he would "bankrupt anyone trying to build a new coal plant in the U.S."?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdi4onAQBWQ
Not that the average voter ever heard much about this, or even heard basic facts about Obama's character and ideology from undisputed sources such as his own books. You might not base your vote on one or two sentences in a book, but how many Obama voters - who were outraged at his being called a ???socialist??? - knew that he had written in his own book "Dreams from my Father" of seeking out "marxist professors" at college or having a well known marxist ("Uncle Frank" - Frank Marshall Davis) as his childhood mentor? Don???t those FACTS about Obama potentially cast his ???spread the wealth??? comments in an entirely different light?
Maybe you should listen to the whole interview rather then an edited snippet. McCain had the same position as Obama did. He stated anyone building an old style coal fuled power plant would go bankrupt which is true.
Hey...guess what all you "haters" of Obama?! FEAR LOST LAST NIGHT. All the fear mongering and hate rhetoric and dirty politics did not silence the voice of hope in the country, hope for real change. Is Obama the messiah? No. Is he superman? No. Is he very possibly the best catalyst for true change since JFK...very possibly. Quit spreading fear, pick up a brick, and start rebuilding this country.
How is the fear of being taxed to death, wrong? We live in a capitalist country, not a socialists one. Besides, if you come from family that hasn't been able to improve it's lot in life from generation to generation, it's not my problem your ancestors were idiots. But i guess now it is........
Are you implying that financial success is primarily a matter of effort?
UR A DUMB B*****!!!!
Congratulations to President-Elect Barack. You have quite a deal to deal with. It is a shame that some people can' see past your color, to some you are African American to some you are Half Caucasion/Half African American. To me you are someone who I voted in who I think can help the nation the best. I understand you don't have a lot of political experience, but I think you are intelligent enough to have plenty of people around you who can guide you to make a informed decision (something I know you will do for the American people, no matter what race or religion you are.) I hope that you can help break down the racial barriers, not only with the Caucasion race but with the African American race. I admire the fact that even though you were raised by mostly caucasians, you are true to your African American heritage. Let's hope that everyone else that see that way also. I wish you much luck President-Elect Barack - you will need it based on some of these comments.
He will likely move quickly to push for forced unionization of companies such as Wal-Mart - starting an inflationary spiral that could lead us back to "Carter style" double digit inflation. Runaway inflation is another thing that young voters have never experienced -and let???s see how well that plays with fixed income seniors in the next election!
Me - I will just kick back and watch the fireworks - and when the dust settles in a couple more years - the country may well see Mr. Obama and the incompetent Democrats crushed for good - their disgraceful treatment of Black America as permanent pet "victims" finally broken by the false expectations that Obama is now somehow going to provide "riches" to those who failed to gain an education and marketable job skills.
If the aftermath of this election, and the coming backlash after next four years ??? lead as I believe it will, to a return to a more balanced media, a return to more traditional values of self-reliance rather than reliance on the government, then our country will be the better for it.
You seriously need to lay off the Rush for a while.
btw What in the world does politics have to do with religion?
nothing.
Obama is christian. And even if he is muslim then what does it matter? Doesnt it say in the bill of rights that everyone has freedom of religion?
ya everybody has the right to religion-but NOT TO RUN THIS COUNTRY-guess 911 meant nothing-tell that to all the families of the victims-oBUMa is nothing but a lying racist bigot-face it-this county made a BIG mistake-not that people will admit-when is it going to be to late
Still, Sad, and I sympathize since I was heart broken in the last two elections (and as it turns out rightly so),; nonethless I have voted in 10 elections, and this is the first time (and I have not heard of another in all our history) that people in large numbers in cities all over our nation and the world were dancing in the streets upon Obama's election. Great leaders from both parties wept with joy. Perhaps, once you get over your disappointment, you can remember that as a nation we are facing historic difficulties, and find a way to constructively pitch in, even from a critical perspective. But at this point, calling a man who was raised by a single mother, and took himself to Harvard, and from there all the way to now has managed to succeed despite more obstacles in his path than most of us see in a lifetime all the way to the Presidency a bum reflects more poorly on you than Barack Obama, who Colin Powell rightly said would "Electrify the nation, electrify the world."
Ummm I pitch in my going to work everyday. Obama wants to take care of the lazy people to stupid to get a job and to take care of themselves. He wants to be a sugar daddy!!!
Yeah, your wrong. Obama is a smart AMERICAN. Hes going to be a great president. Just because your canidate did not win doesnt mean you have to be a sore loser about it. Grow up. Get over it and move out of america if your going to make such a big deal about it. I think obama will do great with this country and if he doesnt then he will be out of office in four years, your acting like hes going to be in office for the rest of your life.
Campaigns are interesting seasons, they come and go with all the noise, rallies, attacks and counter attacks.
If alll the effort put into the campaigns are put into running the country, we would not be in the mess we are in.
GOD bless AMERICA
I have followed the campaign since January 2008. I had no doubt in mind that Obama was the man for the moment. No doubt the campaign is long, gruelling and sometimes laced with various traps. I pray that GOD will always bless America wih leaders who will arise to the occasion, people who accept that they are human and not infallible. . GOD bless America
I hope that Republicans such as dwardtx below realize that it is a two-way street and that demanding Obama change his positions doesn't eliminate them from doing the same. The time is now to stop doing so much for the wealthy, and to start to do a little, just a little, to help ALL of us. But, if history gives us any clue, the right-wing hardliners will do anything to stop the success of the Obama administration regardless of the effect of their actions upon our country. I fear a return of the in-fighting that went on during the Clinton presidency intended to simply stop any legislation that did not come from the Republican playbook, and pray that Congress and the media will demonstrate the intelligence that the voting public did, and realize that the failed policy and behavior of the past must go, and that it is time for America to make a change for the better.
Fascinating! Extraordinary reporting, writing, and editing...can't wait to read more.
Go Obama!!!
If you are truly unhappy with our new President you are more then welcome to move to another country. Oh, good luck with that one, because after 8 years of Bush we are hated by all!
I wish President-Elect Obama well in his upcoming administration. I did not vote for him, but I hope that he will follow his commitment to reach across the aisle to work with Republicans. If he does, he will have to gravitate to a more centrist position. His cabinet choices will probably tell us a lot about his intent to live up to this promise.
I am afraid that he will use the Democratic power position to bring about his more liberal agenda. If this is the case, we'll be ready to take the White House away from him in 2012.

A response to johndeeregirl1980's comment: People most certainly did not vote for Obama because hes black. They like the idea of change and the fact that we wont have another war mongerer as president and Obama is not muslim. Yes, it is good for Obama to stop the war. It was a mistake in the first place and all those soldiers died for nothing. All Obama would be doing is fixing the mistakes that Bush, the person you most likely voted for, created. So, if you feel like pointing out fiction from fact, make sure you use good grammar. yall is not a word.
MaccaFan I guess you should do a little research before you start making comments. Yall is a word. Simple search in 2 online dictionaries will bring up an answer for you. Maybe not all blacks voted for Obama just because he is black but there is some proof that some did. Do a search on "howard stern harlem black vote" and you will get an answer. Makes one wonder about how many more were out there voting just because he is black.
You say this as if there wasn't people voting against him because Obama is bi-racial! Come on how blaind are you???? You can see by the sates that McCain did win in were mainly states that have racial history! So you can't say Obama won based on the black vote either. Obama won from a united vote of people! True Americans also! There are people who voted aginst Obama spite his education and looked at skin color over what he may bring. They say McCain was experince though far too old. His Vp lacked so much experince but for some reason some felt she better Obama spite Obama has a wise VP choice. They only targeted Obama experience spite him having a experience VP. So you can stop with the Stevie Wonder here! GOD BLESS!
Legendary where are you coming from? Are your sure you responded to the correct post? If you are thinking you did, please look at the posts to include johndeeregirl1980's orginal post. She stated that some were voting for Obama because of his race. Maccafan responded that they didn't vote because he was black. I pointed out that there are some that did and give him the means to find the proof. No one EVER alluded to the fact that some voted against him because of his race. That would be the subject of another discussion to which I would agree that some did. No one said ANYTHING that you commented on. Please do not put words in my mouth. I'm sure the others in this post agree with that also.
for one yall is word where i live and and if i choose use the word i will! it defiantly shows that your ignorant for focusing on words and not the statement that was wrote ! you need to get your facts ,those soldiers died for our freedom they put forth there lives for us and all you can think is it's a mistake for this no one is happy that it had to happen that way but you don't recall what they did to us and you think it's ok for us to sit here and not defend the innocent men a women that lost their lives on that day those soldiers made sacrifices for us and its apparent that you need to need to educate your self on the history of America if you don't understand! your absolutely right i did vote for bush and he did make some mistakes but no one is perfect an
Well, the people who voted for him because he is black obviously dont know a thing about the presidential race. Same goes for the foolish kids in my school. "Yall" may be a word in the redneck dictionary but not in mine, sorry.
I agree they didn't know a thing about the race. Some even thought that Palin was Obama's running mate. Sad. As far as the dicionary, look in Webster and Dictionary.com. Neither one is a redneck dictionary. I think they are closer to "your" dictionary that you were referring to..
I dont like that awful kind of grammar. If you like it, thats your opinion but I like to speak with words not created by a fool.
Run on sentences, bad punctuation. That doesn't make them a fool.Just because you disagree with their comment or spelling doesn't make them a fool. The use of the word y'all doesn't make one ignorant either. This is supposed to be a place of discussion, not ridicule. Nor is it English class. Overlook any bad grammar/words you don't think are proper and listen to what they are saying. Your original reply said what you wanted to say. It was fine until your last 2 sentences. Things like that would make one seem to think anyone that resorts to name calling and putting one down for what they say is on a level lower that the original person. If one wanted to grade grammer, I'm sure they could find fault with your original post here. There are many slangs that are used in different parts of this country of ours. Just because someone comes from a certain part and uses certain words they were brought up on does not make them ignorant.
If hes is a word, then yall is a word. (he's, y'all) We all make mistakes! Obama is going to bring change to the country, but will it be the chnge we want? THINK ABOUT IT!
This was an election to test the power of the Media - and the candidate pre-ordained by the Media - starting in the Democratic Primaries against Hillary Clinton - won.
Who lost? The American people.
John McCain ran an honorable campaign, but when the playing field of media coverage and ill-gotten money is so far tilted that even Dan Rather - DAN RATHER OF ALL PEOPLE - feels that it is disgraceful, then that is pretty much all there is to say.
