Obama won because he is a good man and the American people are tired of treated like stupid children. Obama is a Christain (by choice), but this country was founded on religious freedom- so it's OK to be a Muslim or Buddist . It's really American to have that choice. You people who don't understand that and think we need a 100% Christian government don't really understand your bible and are tearing our country apart! Anyway- your FEAR tactics didn't work and your old man and his ditzy sidekick lost- The American people responded to Hope, Faith and a real moral campaign. God Bless Obama, And the AmericanPeople!!!!

Obama is not a Christian...watch and see if he puts his hand on the Bible when he is sworn in.

      • Posted By: dsamsil @ 11/06/2008 7:19:14 AM

He did put his hands in the public ceremony when he was sworn in as an Illionis state legislator both times and when he became a US senator.

Funny he has done it three times already even though the actual swearing in requirements don't require a Bible and numerous Presidents didn't put their hands on one either.

Exactly. The Bush era was the biggest downturn in American history. The entire list of policies was based on fear, lies and pre emptive wars that are based on fiction. The hope that this country should now feel post election is real and grows more apparent as the days go by.Calling Barak Obama a Muslim is the equivalent of calling Geroge Bush a visionary.Neither man is either.Lucky for George W. hindsight is 20/20..too bad
ignorance is not.Ingnorance is the lack of knowledge..Stupidity is having the knowledge and not using it for
the betterment of your own country...FACT!

Enter Your Commentinteresting that so many countries backed us up on their own intelligence. to think their were no wmds is stupidity on your part - how do you think people were dying over their when it comes to mass killings. WMDs are not just nukes - duh

      • Posted By: dsamsil @ 11/06/2008 7:15:19 AM

Actually many countries didn't back up what the US was saying about WMDS being in Iraq. They were actually warning that the sources the US were using were unrealiable and likely in the pocket of Iran.

Iraq dismantled all their WMDs a while ago. Btw when they had them they had been supplied by the US. It's one reason among a laundry list of reasons why the US are considered hypocrites on the world stage.

And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your president too.
President Obama, Excerpt Speech Victory Night 11.05.08, Grant Park Chicago

I guess it is easier to hate, than to want better if not just for yourself but for your country.

It is still a very sad time for America. There is sense of anger and resentment that has been reawakened in middle class America because of Mr. Obama. It is not because of who he is, but instead about what he is going to do-reinstate the full death tax. I am a 4th generation farmer whose family has worked hard all our lives in service (producing food) for our country. My country is waiting for my parents' deaths to punish me with the 55% death tax. The lives and businesses of millions of fellow citizens, past, present, and future are being devastated literally to the point of closing their doors by this tax, which effectively strips them of working capital(land, buildings, machinery, and equipment). People cry foul when they see farmland and beautiful open spaces disappear to developers. My advice is to get used to it . It is the next big change in America.

    • Posted By: leepdx @ 11/06/2008 12:41:03 AM

First I thank you for growiny my food, it truly is a service to our nation. Not sure about the death tax I will have to look into that. I am sure though, that if Obama hears from you, one of our farmers, about it he will listen and he may have a better understanding and it will not happen.

      • Posted By: dsamsil @ 11/06/2008 12:50:39 AM

The so called Death Tax is one of the major sources of tax revenue. If not gotten the missing funds would have to come from other tax increases that would hurt far more people.

Also the freaking tax only affects estates worth over two million dollars and four million dollars for couples. Once again a freaking Republican lie used to enrich the wealthy at the expense of the middle class is promoted by the imbelicies who don't bother to do any research.
Oh 55% which is what the Estate Tax will come to is in 2011 and it's the same percantage that was in 1994. Funny it didn't seem to harm the rich then and actually made people want to recoup the wealth lost by investing and actually doing work to get more money instead of just waiting for their parents to die and hand them a nest egg that they would blow on blow in a five year period.

        • Posted By: maty @ 11/06/2008 3:48:35 AM

Although, to be fair, if you live on a farm it's very possible you do have several million in assets, even if your income is next to nothing ($60K or less for a family?). The value of the land, the equipment, the inventory, etc....just a note - farming is a considerably different industry than drycleaning or a coffee shop, so the estate tax might actually be unfair in this regard.

          • Posted By: dsamsil @ 11/06/2008 7:10:04 AM

Once again estate taxes wouldn't apply to a farmer unless he had an idiot for an accountant. All of the equipment, land, and other assets used to run a farm would be counted off as not being part of the estate.

Family farming is not done in great numbers. Most food is grown by corporate farming. They would pay families to farm. More people drink a latte a day in New York then farm in this country. Family farming has been dying since 1908. Most people who actually farm and are successfull at do it as a hobby or farm unique stuff such as emus and other stuff to fill a niche market's demands not corn or wheat.

      • Posted By: mikemurt @ 11/06/2008 12:46:32 AM

its called the estate tax btw. its where the government takes around 50% of the dead persons money/belongings and such.

        • Posted By: jonsey11002 @ 11/06/2008 6:45:58 AM

hmmm, maybe they didn't have a family trust, most people who have money know how to keep the majority of it and not pay taxes on it, even in death

      • Posted By: dsamsil @ 11/06/2008 12:52:31 AM

Oh btw historically when wealthy people died all their wealth was buried with them or spent on the funeral. It was never transfered to the children or anyone else. If you wanted wealth you had to make it.

Also Warren Buffet and Bill Gates along with other billionaries favor the estate tax.
99.99999 of small business owners and for that matter people are not affected by the estate tax.

Some people say, that the true colors (character) of a person come out in times like these. If you are saying negative, hateful things about someone, what kind of character do you have? If you do not have the ability to really listen, and truly hear others, what kind of character do you have? The character of our nation is showing, people. This board is not only read by people in our nation, but globally. What kind of character do you have? What kind of character do you want to represent to the world. Name calling, negativity, being a sore loser, immaturity... is that what our nation is really about? Shame on us, if it is. Secondly, this blog is about this article, not about your opinion of our new president elect. The PEOPLE have voted. There are many nations in this world where this is not possible. Let us move on and become a better nation, a more progressive nation, in the next 4 years. This article is a way for us to get a perspective on the behind the scenes of an election. I for one, am looking forward to the rest of the articles.

Well, I for one, am very grateful that the American people see what I have seen all along. He is the best candidate for the job point blank period. I wish I could understand those who disagree. This country needs a new direction and it needs to be refocused. Finally someone who is familiar with struggle will be in a position to help the majority, not the elite few , who have untill now, mercilessly run this country with no real regard of the majority of it's citizens and I am so proud. I have nothing but faith and patience in this wonderful human being, and hopefully everyone else will wake up and realize that he is the only one with the vision and intelligence to do so.

    • Posted By: Skynet69 @ 11/06/2008 5:18:57 AM

So glad to hear you are proud of Obama. Are you proud of Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, Harry Ried, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well? Oh well, so much for "change" and "a new direction". The blind will certainly lead the blinded right to the pit of even greater financial Hades! Leave it to libby wussies to put out an arson fire with napalm!

      • Posted By: GD38 @ 11/06/2008 6:39:55 AM

Is the negativity helpful and productive or does it just make you feel better? Why is it SO hard to focus on finding a way to turn the emotional high MOST of the nation is feeling into tangible results? I'm in a very good way financially but I still find myself trying to find ways to do better for my family and this country. This us vs. them bullsht needs to stop.

agateway, when President Obama first graduated from college, he was in debt with student loans. When he tried to rent a vehicle for the 2004 Democratic Convention, his credit card was declined because again, he was in debt. Honey, people all over America can relate to this experience, especially now. I am so sick of us talking about this scary black guy after all these non-intimidating white men have destroyed this country.

I am proud to say I DID NOT VOTE for the racist and bigitod oBUMa. He does NOT love this country-he won't even wear a flag!Where is his birth certificate-It must be still drying-he and his wife are nothing but racist and used his race for everything he could-HE'S NOTHING BUT A FRAUD and a BUM!!!He knew what he was doing getting all the blacks to vote-you think they cared if it was Clinton or someone else-no one will admit he duped everyone-We will all be sorry.Show your birth certificate-what is he afraid of-It was ok to bring out dirt on mccain and Palin but god forbid anyone say anything about the wonderful; oBUMa. Racist moron

    • Posted By: jonsey11002 @ 11/06/2008 6:27:11 AM

It has been a long day or two, after this election. What sticks in my mind is people are referring to this historical event as racist because black people got out and voted, or he got 98% of the black vote, or whatever....so does this mean white people have been racist all these years when they have voted in a white president. The GREAT thing about this country is we have the right to vote for the people we choose to vote for, or not. It is our choice, our decision, on an individual basis. Color does not even go into play here. People chose Obama because of what he stands for. The people (that is us) have spoken. PEACE!

    • Posted By: chazkinbote @ 11/06/2008 2:37:38 AM

So, he was racist because he encouraged African-Americans to get out and vote? Somebody needs to find you a dictionary, quick.

In closing, I would just like to say, HA HA, HA HA, HA! Choke on the mandate. And take that, "real" America!

What type of Christian believes in abortion and gay marriage?

    • Posted By: TheViewFromDenmark @ 11/06/2008 6:25:47 AM

I am a Christian who reads and studies the Bible daily. I voted for Obama because he inspires us all to work together in the continuing effort to make this great country 'a more perfect union.' We as a people have not evolved to the point where we all agree on every issue, but as Obama has pointed out many times we are the 'United' States of America. As we all strive to reach our highest ideals we will see more clearly the things that bring us together rather than the things that divide us. I am not pro-abortion, but niether would I use a candidate's stand on Roe v. Wade as a litmus test. Abortion is a moral issue, not a political one. Teach the freedom abstinance brings to one's life; teach the tremendous responsibility it is to raise a child; encourage young people to pursue education rather than mindless amusement; and you will no doubt see a reduction in the demand for abortion. No one WANTS to have an abortion. All the prayer and fervent energy that the anti-abortion crowd pours into trying to change the law will not solve the problem, will not move us toward forming that more perfect union. Isn't that what our goal really is?

    • Posted By: rgpizza2008 @ 11/05/2008 11:40:24 PM

A Liberal one. It's called separation of chuech and state. Thats why it's up for the states to decide not the churches. If you think abortions are immoral don't get one. If you don't think gays should be married then don't go to their weddings. To want to not only push your beliefs on other people but actually decide for them who they can marry or if they should have children is the highest form of socialism

    • Posted By: Ilovecats58 @ 11/05/2008 7:05:18 PM

to peachesone: EXACTLY!!! Liberals don't use the bible...it will burn their hands if they touch it let alone if the read it. So why would we expect them to abide by it. Abortion and gay marriage is WRONG!!!

to liberaltexan: you're just like a liberal: full of hate and aren't afraid to spew it!

    • Posted By: LiberalTexan @ 11/05/2008 7:02:04 PM

Obama does not "believe in abother" he supports a woman's right to choose. As for "gay marriage," he has clearly stated time and time again that he is against it. I think he is wrong on that count because, again, it should be a matter of individual rights. However, I can live with the idea of allowing him to have his opinion on that. Now, as for ME, I do favor abortion and am a big proponent of mandatory retroaction abortion for intolerent morons like you.

Congratulations America ou have come of age. only thing that worries me fromthe comments is the degree of hate and parochial interests that i see in the comments. We in Kenya exercised Parochial interests and tribal hate in January and it ended up in mayhem. Sad thing is China and a host of other countries are queing up to take Americas place, you have a chance to deny them that opportunity if you rise up and unite once again without stumbling over yourselves about the skin color of the guy in the whitehouse. I had an opportunity to be an exchange student in Minnesota in the eighties and i still love the American people, they welcomed me readily into the rural community of Rochester Mn without any reservations because i was black. Thats the America i havein my memories, i Have been back to the states a couple of times to visit friends but i must admit its a different place from what i saw in the Eighties, there is a growing isolation and Us versus Them Mentality plus a general disinterest in what happens beyond your borders. Americas greatness in the future will lie in Embracing who you are , white, black, latino, asian and not in tearing each other apart. America has come too far to turn back now, stay the course because the world needs a strong America not a bickering one. God Bless

  • Posted By: Kenya777 @ 11/06/2008 5:03:24 AM

from all the postings i have read it just shows an America that has turned in on itself, the sad thing is that i am seeing comments with very poor spelling yet English is your primary language, we outside America on average speak 3 or 4 languages. I am a Kenyan who got the opportunity to be an exchange student to Minnesota in the eighties and i love Americans but your supremacy in the world stage is waning, because of bad policies by men like Bush and the general American apathy to anything happening outside your borders. If the majority of you understood the great odds involved in Obama's journey from his father coming from an obscure Kenyan village to working up the courage to befriend a white woman in the sixties to Obama ending up in Harvard then you would have an appreciation of what a truly great Nation God has bequeathed to you Americans. But in the heat of the moment and in the rough and tumble that racial and partisan interests are bound to provoke a myopia tends to engulf us and we miss the big picture. Americans wake up this is your moment to regain your foothold on the world stage don't squander it. The Chinese and other smaller cultures are about to overtake you, you just need to see the level of eloquence when it comes to the English language amongst elementary school kids in China to realize it just might end up being china's century after all, not to mention their proficiency in Math and Science. As for me i decided to come back to Africa after my year in Minnesota, i have been back a couple of times and i must admit the America of the Eighties is not what i see today, Kindly reclaim it ! God Bless

I am a black student at Purdue and I am appalled at the aftermath of this historic election. I see myself as more moderate, and I voted for Barack Obama, not because he is black/mixed, but because I actually do my research on BOTH candidates policies, read the news, and listen to my peers whether they agree with me or not. Based on that, I exercised my right to cast my ballot. I am happy to say that because of a little over 1.5 million people just like me, Indiana turned blue for the first time in decades. Just based on some of the ignorant and blatantly racist comments I have read on this board, that Purdue is not the only place seeing negativity in the wake of a fair election. At a very popular breakfast joint on campus (that I have actually eaten at twice in the past), a group of black patrons were denied service, as if this was not the year 2008. White patrons that entered the restaurant after my friends got their food quicker. The waitress assigned to my friends was extremely rude and refused to take their order for no apparent reason. One of the girls was five months pregnant and was shoved in a wall, where a window was located, by a security guard. He shoved her so hard the window broke. The guys accompanying her pulled the guard off of her and they were arrested and cussed at by the cops. I am deeply saddened by this. I can't believe there are so many hateful people in this country. I am hearing racial slurs and whispers about me and black students on campus. I watched John McCain give his concession speech on the news and I thought it was phenomenal. It reminded me of his true maverick days of 2000. He urges his supporters to unite for the good of the country. Even in his town hall speeches he refuted the lie that Obama is a terrorist and his potential presidency should not be feared. Why don't his supporters believe their own candidate? I don't believe Obama is a savior and a know-it-all. He won't be a perfect president, there has never been one and there will never be. However, I do know that he will do all he can to bring positive change for the country. I am excited to see the appointments he is going to make to his administration in the coming weeks and I am excited to see what will happen after January 20th. I proud to say that I support my President, and I don't think it gets anymore "American" than that.

    • Posted By: agateway @ 11/06/2008 4:59:54 AM

Do you think all of these 1.5 million people did a thorough research of both candidates policies. I think not. They were picking up thousand upon thousands of homeless people and people in depressed areas by the busloads in all the major battleground cities to vote for Obama. I do commend you though for making an educated vote.

It's interesting to note that many people who DID NOT vote for Obama have made comments about being afraid of what will happened now that he has been elected and how scary Obama is to them. This country has seen a lot more ugliness and scariness than I care to remember, yet, we prevailed. No one has been more calculating and manipulating than the administration of the last 8 years. If we can live through, that, then surely you can give an up & coming community organizer, Harvard Law graduate who actually cares about someone besides himself a chance to put this country back on track and bring people from all backgrounds (the true representation of America) together. PLEASE BE REMINDED THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF!
