I love how the GOP masquerade as some sort of underdog advocating for less governemnt, yet they are completely blind to the following facts:
    * The first and LAST Republican president tohonor his promise and reduce the size of the federal governemnt was Warren G harding.
    * Tax cuts do not work unless you cut SPENDING (JFK knew this)
    * This country was founded by a coterie of Deists and C & E Christians and the word "god" was not on our money, nor in teh plegde of alliegence prior to the Eisenhauer administration.
    * Under George W Bush we had suffered the largest expansion of the federal governemnt since the Johnson administration.

    Questions:
*So why are you complaining about [potential governemnt growth under Barack when you were all fine with it under Bush. Whay are you suddenly so concerned about the spread of governemnt now?
    * Where was this sentiment when Bush ws spreading the wiongs of govenremnt?
*You complain about socilaism, yet it's perfectly fine to be socialist, as long as it's for corporations, socialism for the wealthy, capitalism for the rest of us, how is this consistant?
*You're worried about tax hikes (honestly I am too), though how can you condemn any president for raising taxes after these two idiots (Bush and Cheney) more than doubled our debt starting this war?

Surely you realize that Bush has raidsed taxes for decades to come, even if McCain won he would have had to raise taxes.... Keep that in mind.

As far as changing their symbol to a mastadon the dems don't need to change an ass suits them just fine.

Despite Lincoln's failings he did free the slaves and that was a history making event, not unlike Obama's election Tuesday. The south surely would have won the war had they had the railroad infrastructure the north had at the time. The south had the best generals in the war and won most of the battles until they could not re-supply their army anymore due to lack of transportation..

    • Posted By: Kboogie @ 11/05/2008 11:28:19 PM

Yes....despite the events leading up to the slaves being freed - the point is, they were freed. But, let's remember Lincoln from a historical point of view. He was a brilliant strategist, but no humanitarian. It was a history making event, IN SPITE OF the actual intention.

    Correction:

The democrats have controlled congress since 1928, 72 of the last 80 years. FDR, Truman Johnson Carter and Clinton for his first 6 years had all 3 branches of the govt. GW Bush had a GOP congress for 4 years. The only time ever the GOP had all three branches in eighty years. In 04 the dems got he house back and in 06 the congress. The dems also have held the presidency 44 years since 1932. The GOP Congress under Clinton drafted a Contract with America promsing to lower taxes, remold welfare, balance the budget and a myriad of other provisions they delivered on and Clinton signed on to and ttried to take credit for. So to balme the GOP for everything is a lile. The dems blocked banking regulation which led to this disaster. But don't confuse the truth with your facts.;.

    • Posted By: Dolmance @ 11/05/2008 11:28:15 PM

Yes, and under the Democrats, the United States became the greatest country the world has ever seen, while under the Republicans 40 percent of the nation's wealth has become concentrated in the hands of 1 percent of it's richest people and we're now entering a new Great Depression. Which is why the American people have run the Republicans out of town on a rail. I only wish we could have tarred and feathered them first.

  • Posted By: John Dough @ 11/05/2008 11:26:47 PM

The dems had congress for his second term and a lower approval rating then Bush. If you ant to make fun of his looks that pretty immature I'm just statting the true facts. The democrats blocked regulation that led to this meltdown period. It doesn't matter what lobbyist work for who they did it face it and admit it or continue to lie and blame Bush.

  • Posted By: LibertarianForObama @ 11/05/2008 11:26:35 PM

I can't believe all these GOPhers are on here crying already... Can't you guys lose with some dignity? You had 8 years to prove yourselves, and you chose to elect Magilla Gorilla, if McCain was so great you should have voted him in 2000 when you had the chance....

It's funny how short their memories are, you complain about taxes, I for one despise taxes as well, though don't blame Barack. Bush and Cheney have raised taxes for years to come with their personal war, that's what you get when you elect criminals. So when taxes do increase (they would have regardless of who won this election) you can thank Bush and Cheney. I'm saying this now because I know we're in for 4 - 8 years of insufferable GOPher whining.......

We understand you are in love with this guy. Guess what ? Putin and Medeved could care less if he is changing the color of America. All of you fawning sycophants need to grow up and get ready for a really rough ride with a novice. Nice guy, looks good in a suit, great motivational speaker. That is the sum total. Bet he is wetting his pants already. " But it was so much fun to run .... you mean I actually have to make decisions and be responsible?" The blame monster created by the Democrats is hungry.

    • Posted By: LibertarianForObama @ 11/05/2008 11:19:38 PM

We just finished two terms of a president like that , only he was a terrible orator, and he looked like a circus chimp in a suit.... Where have youy been?

  • Posted By: Warhaft @ 11/05/2008 10:09:57 PM

What Kool-Aid did you drink to think that Obama campaigned from the center? He was the farthest left candidate since McGovern! You have to be pretty far to that side to think of him as the "center." Pelosi and Reid took no blame for their part in government failures, even though do-nothing Dems control both houses of Congress. Hilary was the center, and she lost. We can only hope there is anything left to rebuild in 2012. whenwhen

    • Posted By: LibertarianForObama @ 11/05/2008 11:14:10 PM

You speak of do-nothing democrats, yet the Republicans had this governemnt dominated for how long? What have they done? Other then feeding theri friends and starting a never ending war.... Yes, both of the major parties (In case you can't tell by my name; I am not affiliated with either party) played a role in this, to blame the democrats (alone) who were controlling the houses at the tail end of a 20+ year disaster is just plain laughable. Serisouly, why even support the GOP (Governemnt of Plenty)? If you're a fiscal conservative you should be a Libertarian, if you're a hard core Christian you should be a supporter of the Constitution party. IU sincerely see the GOP becoming a fringe party, a party consisting of rabble such as bigotted rednecks, and half crazed warhawks. Eventually the GOP will be a distant chapter in history, they really should consider changing their symbol to the Mastadon, it would be more suiting............................

    • Posted By: LibertarianForObama @ 11/05/2008 11:05:14 PM

I'm niether a republican nor a demcorat, though I have to point out the fact that the entire federal governemnt was dominated by the GOP (government of plenty), the cdemocrats were only in the houses for two years.....

Rebuild in 2012? We have much rebuilding to do now.... The last 20 years have been a disaster, I'm glad we finally elected someone who has the intelligence and the integrity to clean it up, seriously it's about damn time.....

Kind of like the dems today anything for money

  • Posted By: ariziowa @ 11/05/2008 10:37:22 PM

I really wish someone at newsweak would understand the presidential histories of Kennedy, FDR, and Lincoln. I am always baffled about JFK! Big daddy Joe made his money with the mafia during prohibition. If Chicago didn't vote early, often, even if you're dead - John would not have won. Everyone knows that! Plus, JFK just couldn't keep his zipper zipped. FDR, presided over the Great Depression - only World War II got us out of that. Everyone knows that, also! (Well, students of history do). I will give some slack to Lincoln, even though he really didn't care about slavery.

    • Posted By: Kboogie @ 11/05/2008 10:47:57 PM

Wow, something we can agree on - Lincoln didn't give a sh*t about slavery. It was a pawn he used to weaken the South. The South was becoming a financial juggernaut b/c of slave labor, and the North couldn't compete. The only way Lincoln could preserve the union was by weakening the financial structure. The only way that could happen was by abolishing slavery.

I didn't say Davis did not make millions I said I doubt he did but if he did he was doing his job well. You have a tough time stating facts about the dems but sure can spew them out about the GOP. I did not say Obama was not a US citizen but there is a lingering question so shy not be upfront and put it behind him. Kind of like the Clinton's and the files they couldn't find for months after being subpoenaed. Hillary denied knowledge of them but the FBI found her fingerprints on them. once they were produced I wonder how many went into the shredder or down Berger's pants. You are so ready to forget your party's transgressions but catalog the GOP's. The GOP called for Nixon to resign, they called for Foley to resign and now Stevens. Clinton was supported after committing felonies, Frank was supported and did not resign like Foley over his page boy indiscretions, Berger for stealing classified documents, for illegal wiretapping of Newt Gingrich's phone and on it goes. The GOP polices their own members, the dems police the GOP too along with the media but the dems always support their offenders. Solid ethics!!!!

"wilsan", I read the entire governmental report about Raines, because it was attached to an anonymous email. Looking further is how I found out about Davis getting paid to lobby agains regulation right up to the time he was acting as McCain's campaign manager, and about Freddie donating $250k to the R convention.

But, never losing sight of your main point, it was not the rad-lib press that caused me to cross party lines. It was the same smear propaganda machine that smeared McC, smeared him before he hired them, that is...

Shall we talk about the rampant growth of Credit Default Swaps while the Rs were in control?

    A 40 year republican

  • Posted By: 40YearR @ 11/05/2008 10:12:38 PM

"wilsan": As I recall, Raines got kicked out years ago, and Davis kept getting paid thereafter, business as usual, right into while he acted as McC's campaign manager.

And yes, he got paid to do what he was supposed to do, and he did it.

McC said lobbyists were what's wrong with Washington, and he was going to run them out.

Then he fell behind and he hired one of the biggest R lobbyists there are.

But that's ok, you're just victims of the rad-lib media.

    Yeah, that's the ticket!

    A 40 year republican

    • Posted By: wilsan @ 11/05/2008 10:26:09 PM

Yea, Raines got kicked out by the SEC, after overstating thjing by about 6 Billion... What was his take on $6B? Lots, and lots, and lots.

Let's see, who also served on the Fannie board when the Democrats were making tons of bucks off taxpayers... Aha! Rahm Emmanuel... Who just got picked by Obama to be his Chief of Staff.

ya know, for a " Republican", 40, you sure are shy of the facts. You have been reading Newsweek too long, or perhaps, been lodged on moveon.org... huh?

Regardless, I would REALLY like to see a Bi-Partisan investigation of the Fannie/Freddie scandal. Fully public, let the chips fall where they may. Obama as #2 recipient of 'contributions'... Raines in all his millions of bucks gained illegally, Emmanuelle in his hidden role.

And Newsweek doesn't have a clue to any of this.

  • Posted By: John Dough @ 11/05/2008 10:19:55 PM

Obama has a couple hundred million left in his war chest that he gets to keep. He should hold t ohis ideolory and give it to the federal government to spend.

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 11/05/2008 10:25:10 PM

      Harrumph, sputter, wheeze, mutter....

  • Posted By: 40YearR @ 11/05/2008 10:22:49 PM

Yes, John Dough, and you also think Obama's birth certificate is sealed.

See the links below about the, literally, millions Davis was paid (you can google more about Davis- news, not anonymous smear emails), and about Obama's birth certificate.

I doubt Davis made millions as a lobbyist but if he did then he was doing his job well. If that was my job i would be down on capital hill hustling every vote I could get because that was my job and I believe in doing my job to the best of my abilities. I suppose you think no dems are ever influenced by lobbyists. That is there middle name goes for both party's too not just one or the other..
