Oh yes, I forgot to add... This 'public' is not patient. Obama has about as much time to do something as Bush had... in other words, we already have an Obama Recession going on. And I want my stimulus check, and I want my free national healthcare, and I want my tax cut, and I want my mortgage help. Any time in 2009 will be fine.

    Thanks, Democrats!

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 5:40:40 PM

As much time as Bush?......... 8 years?

      • Posted By: wilsan @ 11/05/2008 5:47:58 PM

Naw. I am looking for my free handout. Obama needs to get in gear, get the higher taxes in place on the rich, and start sending me my checks, insurance and mortgage relief. Oprah has the money - go get it.

With all due respect, Obama is now the President-elect, and is now accountable. Bush is (going to be) history. In case you haven't noticed.

Obama made the promises, he won the election on those promises, and now Obama must deliver.

        • Posted By: Kboogie @ 11/05/2008 6:02:31 PM

Actually, Bush is still responsible until January 20th, 2009....technically.

          • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 6:04:29 PM

Awwwww:_( But I want to start blaming Obama NOW!!!! I'll just stomp my feet for two months then!!

        • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 5:54:49 PM

Hold your load man, no need to prematurely ejaculate your critiques of Obama's first term. Just sit back, relax, and see where things go. After all, people were doing the same thing in 92' and that turned out pretty well for everyone.

          • Posted By: wilsan @ 11/05/2008 5:58:40 PM

No it didn't. The Democrats were completely tossed out in 1994 because of corruption. We just elected them back in.

You know... Pelosi, Biden, Reid, Franks, Rangle... .

            • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 6:00:34 PM

Hmm, i thought we were focusing on Presidents.

  • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 5:26:47 PM

I think people are missing the single biggest campaign factor in all of this: Vietnam is now, finally, a dead topic!!! It's been 40 years coming, but it is officially put to bed. Thank you lord, we can stop harping on the 60's!!!

    • Posted By: b52apl @ 11/05/2008 6:36:14 PM

Now that Viet Nam is finally over, we can pick some other countries for a Democratic Congress to screw, like Iraq and Afganistan. Maybe we can let Iran nuke Israel. That will give us something else to talk about.

  • Posted By: bgarst @ 11/05/2008 5:04:19 PM

How can anyone say with a straight face that Obama ran from that center? Name one centrist policy he proposed. Everything was straight, 100% liberalism. Yo people are so gullible that you take empty, throw-away rhetoric to actually mean something. Nothing about Obama has ever suggested he is, want to be, or ever will govern as, a centrist. You people wanted statist, big government liberalism, and that is exactly what you will get.

    • Posted By: neos @ 11/05/2008 5:09:04 PM

Liberalism brought us civil rights, Social Security, the 40 hour work week, public education, abolition, women's suffrage, an end to monarchial rule, and independence, just to name a few highlights. Today's conservative was yesterday's liberal.

      • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 11/05/2008 5:10:14 PM

        Perfect reply neos, just perfect!

        • Posted By: neos @ 11/05/2008 5:11:25 PM

And a great afternoon to you SJ!

          • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 11/05/2008 6:29:37 PM

Thank you, I have been in a great mood all day!

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 5:10:19 PM

I think you'll be sorely disappointed by his "liberal agenda". He's going to be a as liberal as any other democratic president, and thats not very. Also, this wasn't a slim victory, it was a landslide. So please, spare everyone your angry rants caused by being on the losing side.

  • Posted By: 58ttom @ 11/05/2008 6:23:08 PM

Hey!! lets just chill and give the new prez a chance. I didn't vote for Obama or McCain cuz neither seem to be concerned with the constitution. But if O can get us out of Iraq where we never had any business being in the first place I'm all for it. Hopefully he'll keep our nose out of the rest of the world's business and not force Democracy on people who don't want it. I'm hoping that once he gets in office it'll occur to him that it's not the governments job to take care of people but rather to help things run smoothly and allow people to have the oportunity to take care of themselves. Start overtaxing business and the people who create jobs and they'll run off to some other country and/or shut their businesses down. Then who will pay all the taxes?
Quit sticking your hand out and get your butt to work!!

  • Posted By: herzliebster @ 11/05/2008 6:09:33 PM

"To admit the possibility that the other side might sometimes have a point" is the real essence of "bipartisanship" and "reaching across the aisle" -- not "defying your own party" as McCain would have it.

    • Posted By: wilsan @ 11/05/2008 6:22:56 PM

herzliebster... With all due respect, over the last two years there has been only "hyper-partisanship" displayed by the Democrats Pelosi/Reid/Franks/Rangle et al.

Now, you expect the Republicans to fix that?

  • Posted By: stefano rollero @ 11/05/2008 11:18:25 AM

Obama's victory is a victory for human rights. It is not the victory of a party or an ideology. It 'a victory much deeper and broader.
It 'the victory of a new way of doing politics, a new way to treat people, the people, civil society accountable.
the change for the United States. It may also be for us and for the whole world.
This may bring in the reconstruction of a new architecture of international institutions, dialogue, peace and solidarity.

I am betting he'll hold to his promisses at least as well as Bush did.

He certainly can't be any worse that GWB's claim to be a uniter, not a divider. What a crock that turned out to be!!! GWB and his loyal Bushies will go down in history as one of the BIGGEST dividers we've ever seen.

  • Posted By: b52apl @ 11/05/2008 6:13:21 PM

I don't remember Reagan raising my taxes. He lowered them. I do remember George H. W. Bush raising my taxes. He lost the next election. If Obama's tax cuts for 95% go the way of Clinton's tax cuts for the middle class and disppear, then Obama will have some very disappointed supporters. If he cuts taxes and fails to increase social spending, he will have some other unhappy supporters. If he cuts taxes and raises social spending, he will have yet another set of unhappy supporters who beleived he would cut the deficit. Generally, Obama has no way to make everybody happy.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 6:16:22 PM

Reagan also left GHWB huge debt and deficits. You can cut taxes till were in the ground, but eventually someone has to pick up the slack of those incompetent fantasy tax policies.

  • Posted By: KnightHawk @ 11/05/2008 5:53:25 PM

Barack Obama did not become the 44th U.S. President without the support of millions of white-Americans. Time out for the blame-game and senseless attacks that do nothing but continue to divide. If you are truly children of the "United States", then at some point...you must "unite" and support one another for the good of the entire nation. If your petty differences shall stand forever between you, then you shall be on a collision course with your own self destruction!

    • Posted By: Morgan2008 @ 11/05/2008 6:15:36 PM

Preach your sermons to someone else. If Obama had lost there probably would have been riots in the street by a group that voted 95% for Obama. Obama wants the job of president...he will need thick skin to take the criticism. People should treat him with the same respect that was shown to George W. Bush when he messed up....ridicule him, joke about him on talk shows, and criticize him and blame him for everything that goes wrong which he said he can do. Also we can give Obama low approval ratings when he screws up. What is fair for one is fair for the other. Not taking up for G.W. Bush since I didn't vote for him either time...just reminding you how fairness and freedom of speech works in America.

    • Posted By: wilsan @ 11/05/2008 5:56:47 PM

Now that we have a terrorist among our mist, the Whites are going to have to be on guard against any Black Terrorist in this country. There is word of black gangs going around raping and killing white women and kids. Now is the time to stand up and put an end to this bull ***.

    • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 11/05/2008 4:42:31 PM

I'm sitting in my office with a group of 4 other women 3 of whom are white, after reading your post I asked them if they were worried about the group of wild violent black men roaming the streets of america intent of desecrating their virginal white flesh. They said no. In fact one just advised me that she is sure that her 6'2 Chocolate Boo would protect her, at least that's what I think she said, kind of hard to understand her through her laughter LOL!

I guess they did not get that memo. YOU JERK!

He is from Cook County IL and so am I. I just didn't have faith that someone who passed up so many opportunities to take a stand, would do so in higher office. I hope I am wrong.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 5:30:51 PM

As a Gold Coaster, i can respond to that with the assesment that trying to change things in Chicago politics is tougher than trying to bring democracy to the Middle East. If a guy gets out of representing Cook County without beciming a crook, than that person was a success.

      • Posted By: wilsan @ 11/05/2008 5:43:23 PM

Well now, jsut why do you think the Tank Media, ie, Newsweek among others, stopped reporting on ANYTHING coming out of Chicago? Rezko? Wright? Ayers? Pfheger? it si easy to be successful when there are no critical questions and only positive spin.

Think about it: In 3 years Obama will still be a 'success'... The Tank Media will ONLY do positive spin... no reporting.

        • Posted By: Kboogie @ 11/05/2008 6:07:21 PM

FOXNEWS couldn't find anything either, nor could the 527's, nor could the money machine behind the GOP.

Kiddo, there was nothing. The only thing left was to continue casting doubt based on speculation.

        • Posted By: mrzoid @ 11/05/2008 5:48:56 PM

Perception is tantamount to reality in America. If most of the country percieves it to be true, than truth it becomes.

FINALLY, a positive future, something to look forward to! Now we can walk with our heads held high. Leadership we can trust and be proud of, something we have not been able to do for 8 long years. A good legacy to leave our children and grandchildren and generations to come. A legacy of promise, hope, and good-will is the story left behind from this election, not like the nightmare from the corrupt and idiotic Cheney/Bush Administration. Thank Goodness - what a glorious, happy, encouraging, and hopeful time! I only hope the Lord watches over and protects Obama for his safety. Unlike the 2004 election where the electoral vote put Bush in office, the results of this election is the PEOPLE'S choice. A positive feel in attitudes and a true breath of fresh air. The fact that most of the world agrees with the PEOPLE'S choice of this election should tell us something - the MAJORITY of us know what that is.

    • Posted By: scott63 @ 11/05/2008 5:58:26 PM

No diminishment of anyone, but I will carry forward my especial admiration of Nins' most thoughtful, careful and positive approach throughout.

In addition to those mentioned, thanks to wendydk and Bass Pro too.

Imagine, less than 50 years after the fear and prejudice directed at JFK's religion, and the centuries long, systemic prejudice and discrimination against blacks, this country, our America, now voluntarily looks past race to the person. Wow....

Me too!! I'm lookin' forward to one of the most exciting, thought provoking, mind expanding, adventurous rides of my life. I remember the early 60's and the promise that was before us then. Let's pray we can stay on this one all the way through to the completion. I predict it will very memorable.

          • Posted By: 40YearR @ 11/05/2008 3:52:09 PM

"Hannah B", I emerged from the felt skirt era, to 'I wanna hold your hand', to zoooom. I've told many that I feel that having experienced that has made me one of the most fortunate, ever. The spirit was right, but the time was not. I remember a bank teller having to spew at me because my hair actually touched my ear!!! I was wearing a very conservative suit...

Actually, I see Obama as the product of the enlightened thinking that arose. Fortunately, there are now many of us who saw that time, and can now apply that insight to the last 40 or so years, and commit to doing the right thing. What I never imagined is that such a person like Obama would arise, or that our nation could see through all the furor to actually elect such a President.

I am so glad to have such a reason to look forward...

And after having lost it before, we can really, REALLY appreciate it THIS time around. Maybe, just maybe we can claim some miniscule part of it because his mom came from OUR era when we were inspired to try big things that we hadn't realized were soooo improbable ... like ending an unjustified way. Those were the days.

              • Posted By: Hannah B @ 11/05/2008 4:20:54 PM

"Hannah B", They were days such as there have not been. I never thought the spirit could possibly come around again. The experiences, innocense we won't see. Some slurs caused me to read Obama's books; thought he was just a smooth bag of wind 'til then. Anyone who wants to feel entitled to accuse or question Obama should have to read his books. They own it to themselves anyway, although most haters want to be that. Hate needs to be rationalized (although I have problems with the implication of the root word in context); one can't really reason to such a point of view.

And yes, I really, REALLY appreciate it THIS time around. I'm going to do my best to facilitate success. I feel so much better just having come to the realization. Just think what the doing of it will be. I the grand view, our times will inspire others way down the road, just as we have been inspired.

Good morning everyone, it is only 9:41 here in California. This is great, it means that we as a country have indeed turned a page. Now we can honestly state that any American citizen born in this country can grow up to be president. This opens the door for Asians, Latinos, Jewish Americans, all of us men and women.

    This is a beautiful thing!

This is not just for 40yearR, but if he says that his Republican Party has been hijacked and that moderate Republicans must stand up to the hijackers and then won't name them what hope do they have? None! Not to be willing to summon the courage to name those who pull the strings for the party of hate on an anonymous blog condemn themselves to a dismal future with the GOP.

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 11/05/2008 5:07:09 PM

Bass Pro, I'm not dodging your question re the extremists in the R party. Just don't know a lot of names. I just woke up to the extremity of what was going on. Karl Rove, obviously. DeLay. Rick Davis. Cheney. Rumsfeld, Doug Fyffe. That jackass who wrote that smear Obama book, and who facilitated him.

McC kept the movers in his campaign under wraps for the most part, but the names will come out. Not so sure the ones behind them will be known.

I get that identifying specific individuals will be useful, and I'll look into that. But, I think change will come when the party leadership learns that the practices and philosophy will lose them members and, therefore, elections.

To my fellow Republicans do not feel down. This turn is a chance for us to prove we were correct all along. Instead waiting on the goverment to improve our lives like so many of the Obama followers will do, we have a chance to move ahead of all the lookers standing along the sidelines. While they are sure Obamas plan will make their life easier and they will finally get what they believe they deserve we will be working hard for our families. Four years from now when they finally realize they were fooled we will be further ahead than we are today. You know just like the stock market. When the poor are selling the rich are buying. Do not allow this rare time in history pass you buy.

    • Posted By: neos @ 11/05/2008 5:04:22 PM

We are not waiting on the goverment to improve our lives. We are trying to improve our government. See the difference?

  • Posted By: techresmgt @ 11/05/2008 4:18:55 PM

So much has been said about the 'historical significance' of the Obama win. The only thing historical about it is that a Black man actually ran for President. No one has EVER prevented a Black politician running for President. Why is the entire matter slanted to infer they have?

    • Posted By: TalkSoup @ 11/05/2008 4:26:18 PM

The significance is that he was accepted in spite of being Black.
It'e true that some voted for him because he's black, not in spite of it. But many others voted for McCain for the same reason.

It wasn't that long ago that blacks didn't have the right to VOTE, let alone run for office.

      • Posted By: ariziowa @ 11/05/2008 4:44:52 PM

Some??? My goodness, "TalkSoup" - what polls are you looking at? You know it was black, white guilt, limousine liberals, and a gazillion dollars! Do you really think osama is going to be his own man? He has too many lobbyists to pay back.

Not all blacks that voted Obama did so BECASUE he is black. We all know many blacks are poor or middle class. That is who his campaign reached out too.

Ever think - maybe - many of tehm were just tired of being kicked around by the Republican party for the last 8 years?

Get your head out of your butt. Obama is at least the 5 person i know of that ran for President. Shirley Chisolm, Barbara Jordan, Alan Keys and Jesse Jackson have all thrown their hats in the ring. No comments I've seen has disputed that.

A gracious concession speech by McCain, the true McCain - too bad the true McCain has been missing for the past several months. Alas, it was not his time, his time was in 2000. McCain's problem-BUSH! Bush worst and dumbest EVER! He was never president over ALL the people of this fine country. If you want to be president of a country, you HAVE to be leader of ALL the people, not just the rich ones, not just the ones that look like you, and not just the ones of your political party. Personal goals were more important to Bush rather than being honest and good and moral. At any cost and using any corrupt means would that thick-skulled idiot use to reach HIS and Cheney's goals. If you are mad or confused about '08 election results, you have been sleeping, especially for the past 8 years. Do the human race a favor, go back to sleep. This country is moving forward together, if you want to be hateful and don't want to be a part of the American team, GET OUT, YOU don't belong here.

UnAmerican tendancies in the Obama camp? Horrors. Fortunately, you are in no position to tell anyone to ''get out ''of this nation. Know-Nothings,Obama [and the country] do not need.

You forgot something Meacham. All of America will need a media unsullied by partisanship and bias. The ''patience''you demand of Americans will have to be tempered with factual unbiased news and information served straight with no chaser. Especially as regards the economy, where you will have to deliver,in Obamas first hundred days, the areas of broken campaign promises [already being adressed by some liberal media including todays NPR], promises that he will be unable to fulfill in the face of the economic recession.

You must be talking about the elitist leftwing media John & Sarah always talked about. Yeh, they should be more unbiased like Fixed Noise...

...which represents one half of one percent of the Washington press corps. You [and the media].will have to do better than this.
