The United States of America is a melting pot; the natives here are Native American Indian's, everyone else either by force or choice is an immigrant!! Whether we admit to it or not we all help our friends, sometimes we want to, sometimes we dont. As Americans, ideally, we should all be friends, all stand together like we did right after 9/11. It is time for America to take care ALL of its' citizens, not just the wealthy; ALL! How many companies have to close, how many homes have to be lost; color isnt the issue, everyone is losing!!! The motto has always been " Take care of your own", well its time America take care of its own; ALL of them.

My 5 yrs old bi-racial grandsons are now going to have opportunties that my not have come they way, because of Barack Obama. They were so happy to hear he had won. We all are, he has given us hope, it won't be easy but this is a very intelligent man we have just elected. We all should be proud!!!!

    • Posted By: mtvoter @ 11/05/2008 6:14:49 PM

That is what is sad to me, so many people voted for him because of the color of his skin because that will open up opportunities for the....because we have a black president. No thought went into whether he can do the job or not, they just wanted a black president. He only knows how to campaign. Did you notice that he already started campaigning for 2012 when he said "it can't be fixed in 4 years." Come on people, you were brainwashed by the sweet talking boy that has never led ANYTHING in his life! He can't even vote yes or no on issues....he voted "present' 75% of the time. He will have no idea what he is doing, lets just pray that he finds some smart people to surround him because any change for the good won't come from him. Socialism is not a good choice any European will tell you that. But hey, lets all work hard, pay for college, get an education and then give half of the hard earned money to those that sick and watch Oprah during the day. This is a great country but when voters go the polls un informed just because some celebrity told them too it is disturbing. How many new voters were out there yesterday voting? Alot, that is great except they probably couldn't have picked Obama or McCain out of a crowd because they know nothing of what either was about, but because one was a minority...hell, I am voting for him!!!!
I guess, it is what it is, and THANK GOD there are checks and balances is our government so that Obama doesn't decided to change our FLAG and our National Anthem. I dont think the rest of the congress is as WHACKO as him!

      • Posted By: mfairchild @ 11/05/2008 6:57:50 PM

YOU ARE SO WRONG, YOU NEED TO LOOK AT WHAT YOU WRITE, HE WAS NOT VOTED IN BECAUSE HE WAS BLACK, NE WAS VOTED IN BECAUSE NE CAN DO A BETTER JOB THAN MCCAIN. BUSH IS AN IDIOT AND CHENEY HAS MADE HE MILLIONS OFF THE OIL COMPANIES. THIS COUNTRY NEEDS A SMART MAN TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY. JUST THE WAY HE LEAD HIS CAMPAIGN.

        • Posted By: mariethomson @ 11/05/2008 8:57:30 PM

Actually he WAS probably voted in because he is black. 10% of the nation is black and they voted almost 92% for him. There was only a 3/4% difference in the popular vote between Obama and McCain. Check the math here. He won because the blacks voted for him and probably also because of white guilt about slavery that happened far before our time and actually was perpetrated more by Moslems back in the old Africa/Arabian areas than ever ever in the United States. Obama won because he was black and blacks voted for him (admittedly) because they wanted "someone who looks like me" according to the polls! There you go! Check the numbers and you will see that if he had indeed been a black fool (which he is no) he would have probably won anyway.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 11/05/2008 7:55:34 PM

First off, you are wrong. Obama won despite his color, not because of it.

Secondly, did McCain disavow the votes he was going to get from people who voted against Obama because he WAS black? I don't think so.

    • Posted By: mariethomson @ 11/05/2008 8:53:24 PM

My grandchildren are biracial too and I already thought they have every opportunity. They are excelling at everything they try and not just sitting around being patted on the head and told they aren't going to be anyone because they are bi-racial. Stupidity is victimizing those who are NOT victims unless they make themselves victims or society makes them feel like victims so they will vote for Obama.

  • Posted By: Not4BO @ 11/05/2008 6:56:31 PM

He wanted nothing to do with the Old Washington people when he was in the primaries. Now he needs them all. He will have his hands full with all of the problems we are currently dealing with. He better have a whole lot of smart people to even begin to do one-third of what he said he would do. People will be watching him carefully - he made a lot of promises and I don't see how he can keep them without driving us further in the hole and making us more vulnerable as a nation. I see higher taxes on the horizon - not the 95% tax cut he promised. Time will tell. As far as "spreading the wealth," he has spread very little of his over the years he has had money. Neither has Joe Biden. They really should practice what they preach.

    • Posted By: Legendary @ 11/05/2008 8:55:52 PM

Mccain should also! Mccain has been so much a hyprocrate I lost respect for him. Mccain has changed him plans many times doing the campaign. He has mentioned ties to terrorist when not only have McCain has had ties with a guy who tried to assinate someone and a preacher who says Hitler was doing GODs work. Mccain mentioned the guy is reformed and the preacher apologized is what makes him better??

McCain also got on Obama about being cocky when McCain mentioned he knows he was going to win when he did not! McCain talks about public funding when he knows he is rich before campaigning. McCain mention Rev. Wright though he sat in a crowd yelling hateful comments as well as threats. he did apologize but after the media made note of it! So what your saying is one sided!

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 11/05/2008 7:38:59 PM

Joe Biden isn't rich. He's the poorest person in the Senate and isn't even a millionaire.

It always seems that it is the idiots who base nonsensical stories on non-proven facts. This is particularly true in an age when almost any fact can be determined over the Internet. Still there is no paucity of these clowns trying to poison us with their gibberish.

      • Posted By: mariethomson @ 11/05/2008 8:47:46 PM

I would show respect if he deserved it. After seeing what he did with his cousing in Kenya--running an identical campaign based on "Change" and seeing what that change was he was over there in Kenya supporting well, I'm one of the 48% of Americans polled yesterday who view the Obama presidency with a range somewhere between "concerned" and "sheer terror."

Oh yes, by the way, his cousin lost and started a blood bath like Rwanda. Obama didn't say a word against it and what was the CHANGE Odinga (BO's cousin had in mind--remember he promised change too and Obama supported him from village to village--this communist islamist who named his son Fidel--Obama's cousin promised the Islamists to put Sharia (Moslem) law into effect within a year in this 85% Christian country and the man is a Marxist educated in East Germany in Marxist Communist tradition. This is the "change" Obama supported for Kenya--I suppose it is the Change he wants here too--Communist/Islamist government.

  • Posted By: golden ruler @ 11/05/2008 6:57:16 PM

Obama is half white, so the constant touting of him as our first "black" president is not accurate. First mixed race president? Perhaps. He was born of a white mother, raised by white relatives, but is all of a sudden considered "black." All the people out there that are so outraged are doing nothing positive by expending energy on anger and hate. Get over it and see what kind of positive contribution you can make to your country, even if in some small way. Begin locally. Begin at the most elementary level - within yourself. Negativity and hate are choices. Choose to be positive and optimistic. Choose to care. Choose to take steps to improve self, and improvement will come to the world around us through our actions. But don't mistake my optimism for lying down for our enemies. They also have choices and if they choose hate and set themselves against us, we must - we will - show some darn tough love! God will sort em out! To those who choose higher ground, nation will work with nation. Not a one world concept - but a world choosing to work together. Am I a brainless naive idealist? Not at all - just hopeful that people will seize this moment to do the right thing from here on out. We all know right from wrong - we just fail to choose right, enough.
    Blessings to you all.

Well you can't blame Obama for that! Who started this label of color anyway??? Most of all African American have some white in them. Since the days of slavery Africans have lost the percentage of being 100% African. On every survey and app there is no bi-racial label when they ask for color of race. Why ask that??? Racial profiling is made for what reason?? Most people choose where they fit. Bob marley could been considered white because his father was white and his mom was jamacian. He is labeled balck because of skin color though. So people can not say it's blacks jumping on the bandwagon when it is not them who also label him base on his color. Mccain has also with the Rev. Wright ads. making note his Rev. has something against some whites. That made it a racial issue doing that. So many whites feel Obama is black knowing his mom was white they looked at his name and mainly talked of his father who died many years ago. Not much was talked about his people who raised him in the media, but his father side has been a story! Like one side there is no 100% african american unless he came from africa today.

    • Posted By: rudeawakening @ 11/05/2008 8:07:26 PM

Since slavery in the US it has been the custom to apply the "one drop rule". If you have one drop of blood from a black relative you are black. It is only recently that people started coming up with categories that break it down more scientifically. How many times did you think in your head "wow that Tiger Woods is one great Thai golfer" ?

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 11/05/2008 7:35:06 PM

In this country, if you have black heritage and look black, you are black. Are you going to tell the millions of African-Americans who have some white heritage that they aren't black? Ridiculous.

  • Posted By: Donomitedon @ 11/05/2008 7:21:04 PM

I have no problem with the race or skin color of Obama,I can see that he is well educated, and seems to genuinly care for the people of this country! I also believe that anyone using race in any context, pro or con,is a racist in their own right! Mcain is also a good man who cares about this country! My only concerns in this presidentry is that now that a black man has been voted in,is who will try to capitalize and corrupt the president! During this election we havent heard much from people like jessie jackson or Al Sharpin! I have to wonder why? But I dont! They have stayed in the sidelines, out of sight and mind so they would not rock the boat! These men,so they say stand for god and civil rights! But we know thats a lie! When those colledge students were being accused of raping a black woman,Both of these men were outraged! Willing to do whatever it takes to prosicute those boys! And if they were guilty? Then rightfully so! But when the truth came out about the case! These men offered up no apologies, reguardless of the permanant damage to the character of these kids! These frauds of the faith and false seekers of justice! Are the only concerns that I have, because I believe that the hate and injustice that they produce have only kept blacks and whites from coming together! As long as obama keeps them at a distance or other groups that hold the same one sided views on life! I think we will all stop hating! And the world will be a better place for everyone!

    • Posted By: Legendary @ 11/05/2008 8:36:43 PM

I see this is a one sided story! The KKK also felt they was doing GODs work. These groups went to church and read the bible and still killed innocent people. You mentioned band wagon??? McCain jumped on the case were that one girl lied and said a 6'4" black man beat her up and craved a backwards B in her face. After hearing it was false McCain did the jessie and sharp thing also! Think how many people died in the past for a lie like that??? This is why I feel

Obama will be a better president than McCain. After seening some of Mccain rallies I lost respect for him. He sat in them hearing people make hateful comments and only commented about it after the media brought it up. Some would look at what Rev. Wright said was baout the same when Obama didn't sit in the service when he said that comment! McCain also stood right next to a man while he said Hitler was doing GODs work!

What I can say is that I am proud to see American is changing. United Obama won! Not because of all black votes or white votes but everyone who is inspired by this man voted for him. Every race and religion voted! So change is coming!

    • Posted By: Foxxpaws22 @ 11/05/2008 7:53:20 PM

I wouldnt worry all that much about Jessie Jackson or Rev Sharpton... Obama and Jackson had an ugly falling out when Jackson called Obama out on that interview when his mic was still on and he made nasty comments. Obama has not forgotten. As for Sharpton, I wouldnt worry about him much.. certainly not about Rev. Wright...

  • Posted By: Stephanopolis @ 11/05/2008 6:33:09 PM

mtvoter, you can't even use correct grammar, yet you're so convinced about the validity of your generic hand me down statements, you've gone so far as to call Obama a Wacko. We didn't elect him because he's black, just like we didn't vote for Palin because she is a woman. We voted for confidence, ability, intelligence and POLICY. Why anyone who is not a millionaire or a war hawk would vote republican is beyond me. You are the middle class yet you long to vote for rich men who promote corporations and special interests. if Bush had gotten his way, Social Security would now be gone too. Socialism???? Is that what you call health care, lower taxes for working people, education for our youth, funding for development, the arts, the actual progress of this nation? You are so misguided and disillusioned you don't even know how to be apart of this this great moment in our history--- NOT because a black man was elected, but because the people spoke and the country listened. This is not a race issue, so don't drag it down into one. Go back to your nasty, fearful little world. We don't frightened whiners like you in this country, scared of terrorists, scared of foreigners, scared of losing your stale ways---- we need positive, forward thinking youth, and now we have it. So shut up, the way we did for 8 years with a psychopath in office who brought this country to its knees and should be tried for war crimes in Hague.

    • Posted By: mariethomson @ 11/05/2008 8:25:15 PM

Fear is often justified. Just as one would justifiably fear a group of young black men walking toward them with a menacing look on their faces (of course this isn't racist--more black young men are in prison than college--criminality much too high percentage wise). One can justifiably fear Barack Obama and his Islamist and Communist ideas(check out his actions in Kenya). In polls taken yesterday and reported on TV, fully 25% of Americans polled are "scared" translate frightened, of an Obama Presidency. Fully 20% more are seriously concerned. That is 45% of the population and 48% voted against him. The electoral college skewed the view that this was a landslide but the popular vote shows only a few percentage points separate the two men and with 10% of the country African American and 92% of them voting for Obama, the Black vote (racist) alone could be the only difference between the two.

Obama will have his hands full. the 45% that are from concerned to frightened of him in office will be watching carefully and wil NOT be easily governed if he tries to redistribute the wealth to his black constituents like he indicated he wants to do in his 2001 radio conversation. (see You Tube).

I have worked hard for my money and believe it is no more than common theivery to try to take one cent of it to give to some black person in North Carolina sitting around all day watching TV smoking his bong and with his hand out already for his g'vment check! That is stealing just as much as if that same man broke into my house and stole my money himself.

Taxes are justifiable when they are for our public good! I am actually happy to pay for improved roads, new bridges (where justified), schools and parks and other items of public good. I pay 10% of my income to my church to take care of the poor and destitute (which they do without overhead--zero). Show me a government program that works as well as my church at handling needs of the truly needy and I'd support it. As it is g'vment welfare keeps people down, creates a permanent lower class, keeps all of us from enjoying what the brain power of those amazing black children I see in the streets of NY and Chicago and here in Seattle from contributing one day to the common good in space, medicine or just as good employees of the major corporations, working hard, enjoying the benefits ot their labors and lifting their familiy and community.

I see a lot of black families here in Seattle that have entered well into what Rev. Wright despises as "middle classness." Good for them! They are taking opportunities and making themselves and their families ever more an indelible part of the fabric of an America that is color blind.

    • Posted By: mariethomson @ 11/05/2008 7:57:34 PM

      Stephanopolis--
Because the Bush Tax Cuts benefitted the middle class most of all. I know the rhetoric, but look up the facts. Actually the Bush taxes were harder on the top classes than Clinton. The tax structure was slightly better for the middle class than Clinton and the poorest had about the same deal. 60% of Americans pay only 1% of the taxes and that is absurd. We already have the highest businesses taxes in the world. Mitt Romney was right! In order to have wage earners you have to have wage payers and businesses will not be hiring wage earners if their companies aren't profitable. I know you libs hate it, but businesses are in business to make a profit--for themselves, their shareholders (you if you have a 401K) and those of us who actually care about our employees want to make a big profit so we can pay our employees higher wages and give them bonuses for work well done. I love it when I can call an exemplary employee(s) into the office and tell them we have had a good year and we want to share the wealth! Love it love it! If there is no profit there is nothing to share. Eventually there is no business. We close the doors and all or our highly skilled folks earning six figures are unemployed. Then that snowballs because our folks (hope it doesn't come to this, but the times are bad enough and Obama's election has already caused a vote of not confidence--a big drop in the stock market) so his election may force us and many, many small businesses like mine to shut down.

Obama talks about putting extra taxes on those who go off shore. If we go off shore that means all of us will go (hopefully some of my best employees too). Taxing those who are marginally surviving and still employing American workers as the can will find the off-shore tax the last straw and simply stop being US companies. Bad news for Americans. Bad news!

As a McCain supporter, I must say that I am very hopeful that some real issues are addressed and fixed by our leaders. Democracy is a beautiful thing, even if your candidate is not the winner, the country did stand up and have their collective voices heard.

My one hope as a veteran of Iraq: Don???t cut and run, don???t place ridged timetables on success. Let???s finish that one out in a way that provides dignity to Iraq and the American fighting forces that gave so much over the past 6 years.

    • Posted By: rudeawakening @ 11/05/2008 8:24:33 PM

In case you haven't noticed Bush is working on an agreement right now with the Iraqi's that will have our troupes completely out of Iraq by 2011. So when Obama says that he want a timetable it is "cut and run" but when Bush says it it is victory????????

But now with his share the wealth bullhunkies I will have to lay half of my valued employees off. I already pay 53% tax on my gross earnings, then comes in payroll, and misc expenses. With his share the wealth I won't have any more money. I don't know about you but i can't afford to get any poorer.

Just because the Bushies specialized in quid pro quo doesn't mean everybody does. Just because Bushies excelled in conspiracy doesn't mean Dems do. Just because Bushies see boogiemen around every corner doesn't make it true. YOU LOST, got what you deserved that were the ultimate and logical result of the seeds you have sown. You have no one to blame but your own party/people. Get over it; move on and at least limit your whining until you've got something to whine about.

Why is there nothing in this article that makes me feel better? It really doesn't matter who he surrounds himself with, unless some miracle takes place to rejuvenate the economy, this country is going to be in a lot worse trouble than it already is. Warren Buffett is a classic example of greed - I used to work in one of his companies - and to think of him advising on finances is enough to bring on apoplexy.

Buffet is committed to give away 85% of his wealth to charity at the rate 1.5 billion per year while he is alive. He is worth over 55 billion at this point. I would not consider him greedy. Are you giving away 85% of your wealth to charity??? He is also known for buying and building up under performing companies. While the original moves by him might include layoffs the final result is profit and job growth from a company about to fail..

Warren Buffett greedy? Try looking up all of his charitable contributions. Ask Bill and Melinda Gates about his greed. I know someone who works for one of his companies too. From everything I hear he appreciates ALL of his employees, takes really good care of them financially (wages AND benefits plus little extras) and is an extraordinary boss. Perhaps it was just you.
