CHAPTER 2

Back From the Dead

By late spring of 2007, John McCain's campaign was adrift, if not sinking. Then the candidate found a new narrative: the comeback.

Let's face it people, it's over and done.....He made it to the top. Truth really hurts but face it! I just wonder why some of are so mad about Obama which infact he was the most intelligent in all the candidates during the primaries. Maybe that's too much but hey, he beat everybody. For all the people who have gripes about his win please don't judge him, look at yourself in the mirror first whether you are better than Obama then maybe you can, if not, if you don't have anyhting nice to say, say no more.

So basically you are saying that our freedom of speech should be suppressed now? Here we go. Bye America. Bye Freedom. We, the educated public, tried to have a country we could hand to the next generation. It is so sad they will never know freedom as we did. People like the comment above are already saying we shouldn't exercise our right to free speech because we dont agree with him/her.

Spun like a true republican. It worked do well during the election, no reason to stop spinning now.

        Pathetic

"we the educated" tried to hand to your grandchildren a 10 TRILLION debt. The GOP has survived on the ignorant masses to support the BS over the past 20 years and you and yours are a joke.

Are you kidding me, I ll judge him just as he has judge everyone who has not agreed with him. I'll judge him as his wife judges those as racists that to not agree with her or her hubby. I judge him as he tramples on our constitution and works to take away your rights. I'll judge him because he supported the genocide of Christians in Kenya by helping his cousin raise over a million dollars towards being President Kenya after his cousin admitted responsibility for the actions. Most of all I judge him because he cannot be honest with himself or the country about place of birth. He was elected due fraud and until proven otherwise, I stand by my statement. Pull your money fast from the banks and hold onto it tight. Obama will steel it as fast as he stole this election.

Hey Newsweek, Do you plan to discuss the ongoing pending legal problems regarding Obama's citizenship? The pending lawsuit in the State of Hawaii and the one facing him with the US Supreme court. regarding his Vault Birth Certificate. Also how about complaints with the Federal Election Committee and the FBI. November 18th and Dec 1 st should be interesting days to watch. See obamacrimes.com

I would say the decaying morals of this country have a lot to do with the economic conditions we are facing today. The Greed Factor. Losing respect for the unborn (abortion) and elderly (assisted suicide), sexual inmoral, and basic family structure add up to higher social cost to this and many other countries.

    • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 11/14/2008 6:48:20 PM

I was with you on the greed point - but you lost me after that.

    • Posted By: truthNus @ 11/06/2008 2:25:50 AM

So why do the moral issues get overlooked by over half of the american voters when it seems to be the root problem? Is it denial? Or just a rebellious anti-God movement that has been around since the beginning of creation that history proves is the sure path to destruction?

      • Posted By: fifi8989 @ 11/06/2008 9:29:34 PM

*Or just a rebellious anti-God movement that has been around since the beginning of creation.*

The creation of what? Mankind? Religion itself?

*History proves is the sure path to destruction?*

Yea, by religious fanatics like you. Christians have no right to preach morals, when their religions past is full of hatred, intolerance, murder, corruption, greed, lies, bigotry, and racism.
Please read up on your religion, and I don't mean the bible. You might be horrified by some of the acts your popes/ religious leaders commited in the name of God.

I am a black student at Purdue and I am appalled at the aftermath of this historic election. I see myself as more moderate, and I voted for Barack Obama, not because he is black/mixed, but because I actually do my research on BOTH candidates policies, read the news, and listen to my peers whether they agree with me or not. Based on that, I exercised my right to cast my ballot. I am happy to say that because of a little over 1.5 million people just like me, Indiana turned blue for the first time in decades. Just based on some of the ignorant and blatantly racist comments I have read on this board, that Purdue is not the only place seeing negativity in the wake of a fair election. At a very popular breakfast joint on campus (that I have actually eaten at twice in the past), a group of black patrons were denied service, as if this was not the year 2008. White patrons that entered the restaurant after my friends got their food quicker. The waitress assigned to my friends was extremely rude and refused to take their order for no apparent reason. One of the girls was five months pregnant and was shoved in a wall, where a window was located, by a security guard. He shoved her so hard the window broke. The guys accompanying her pulled the guard off of her and they were arrested and cussed at by the cops. I am deeply saddened by this. I can't believe there are so many hateful people in this country. I am hearing racial slurs and whispers about me and black students on campus. I watched John McCain give his concession speech on the news and I thought it was phenomenal. It reminded me of his true maverick days of 2000. He urges his supporters to unite for the good of the country. Even in his town hall speeches he refuted the lie that Obama is a terrorist and his potential presidency should not be feared. Why don't his supporters believe their own candidate? I don't believe Obama is a savior and a know-it-all. He won't be a perfect president, there has never been one and there will never be. However, I do know that he will do all he can to bring positive change for the country. I am excited to see the appointments he is going to make to his administration in the coming weeks and I am excited to see what will happen after January 20th. I proud to say that I support my President, and I don't think it gets anymore "American" than that.

Well all said and done now, it's to late to cry over spilled milk. "sleeping Cell" Barak Hussein Obama, Did any one realize that he won because of the Media made such a big issue about him that all Americans that stood and heard this about Barak was marveld, but missed on the sublimital messages sent that hipnotized millions to vote for Barak. And did any one finally see that for the first time over 80% of the black American population voted him in, it was a marvel watching and hearing nothing from Barak that made me run out and say this is the individual that I want to lead me into the future. For god sakes this mans electoral party went out door to door to take people out to the voting poles that had no transportation and made sure they voted for OBAMA, I don't feel is historic that so many people voted for him, I feel his party went out and did a kamakaze on the american people and took those that had no trans portation to the poles, it makes me wonder if some or alot of those wanted to vote the other way? HMMM makes you wonder hu? I guarantee that OBAMA is going to appoint puppets in his cabinet so that he can pull their strings and all of them will be grateful and follow to his drum beat. and what do we know about his wife, is she going to be a role modle for all women in the US, I think not...well all i say is be prepared for the next 911 which will be a greater loss of life, once Obama removes the troops from Iraq. We are in for a ride of a life time and we owe it to ourselves for this so called Historic Night Of Nov. 4th, 2008 A night that will be remembered as the night we gave our way of life away to a tirant...."WE LOST"

Oh, by the way, the tryant - he's leaving office on January 20th.

Comment: What worries me at this time is as Powell stated, "..the narrowing of the Republican party." It really bothers me to say that what I witnessed in this political season was a party that became exclusive vs. inclusive. After Palin arrived the definition of a Republican could only be: against abortion, against taxes (even with the biggest deficit in our history), small town, uneducated, angry/scared/mean (border line violent) white people.

Wow, now i want to know one thing, how do you figure? All i can say is, you must be african american to be speaking like that.

    • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 11/14/2008 6:39:50 PM

Not african american, just enlightened. Powell was right, the republican party is narrowing. And on Nov 4th, they felt the impact.

So what happens next? They go back to being the broader party of 20 years ago, the one that I voted with on numerous occassions or they get even narrower and eventually fade from history.

Should be interesting to see what happens.

God is an illusion brought forth by man's early experiences with what we now know of as the ego. As early man started hearing 'voices' in their head (the conscience). They attributed this to their king or former king, and later in history, god, or a plethora of gods. Christianity borrowed numerous rituals from the PAGAN religions that preceded it (Christmas, Easter, Santa Claus, the list goes on and on). In the process of demonizing these earlier religions, the early 'religious right' stole these early beliefs and made them their own. The separation of church and state was put in the Constitution so that America could be free of the shackles of former Monotheistic societies. It is perfectly legal, indeed supported, that ANYONE can believe and/or not believe whatever they want. This notion of 'god's will' is something that this world sorely needs to get over. My personal beliefs, and the those of others, are what makes everyone unique. Indeed, by pushing your beliefs on others, you are in effect against the bible (Thou shalt NOT judge). If god is real, he will except me for who I am, not for what I believe.

    • Posted By: rexymeteorite @ 11/07/2008 12:28:16 AM

not to mention a lot of the ten commandments were borrowed from Old Babylonia's "Hammurabi's Code". It is widely accepted that who was thought to be Moses was so enamored with Mesopotamian society that he took many laws from them and adapted them to fit the Jewish people. The theory of "Lex Talonis" (eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth) is actually the direct interpretation of the "Law of retribution" that was written into Hammurabi's code.

In fact, most of the Old Testament was written during the time that Mesopotamia existed. It is also said that the Christian Genesis story is actually adapted from a Mesopotamian PAGAN deity. The ties between Paganism and Christianity are not just vanity, they are widely accepted fact.

I am not insulted anyones religion, nor am I trying to disprove it, all I am saying is that Christian views on law are ancient. I believe that we need brand new ideas to face brand new problems, and going back to a centuries old book will not solve the problems of the twenty first century.

It's time for you to withdraw from this world of hipocracy John. Retire & enjoy the remainder of your personal life. Your fellow Americans have no regard & respect for service to country & decades of valuable & pertinent political experience, so they sold you out. They lack the ability to understand that occupancy of the presidential office is a privilege that Obama should not have acquired at this time of his political pursuits.

    • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 11/14/2008 6:32:12 PM

Or maybe it is because John McCain sold his honestly, integrity, and character to the corrupt, hate-filled, republican leadership for a shot at the White House. Funny how many of Bush's old cronies, the same people who smeared McCain in 2000, found their way into McCain's campaign. How does a man with character, a man who claims to be a leader, allow that to happen?

I think McCain was a decent fellow - I think he still is. I don't think any republican candidate could have won this election. Obama was just to well organized and the economic melt down so close to the election just sealed the deal.

But when things started to turn against McCain, he panicked. He listened to that little devil we all have on one shoulder. The one that tells us to do something we know is wrong, but we find some way to justify it, even though deep down inside, we still know it is wrong. For McCain, I think it was the ends justify the means. He sold out his principles for a chance to be President. And I think it is going to be something that haunts him for the rest of his life.

Mark Salter saw it happening, but couldn't stop it. Too bad others weren't able to see it too. In the end, the republican party destroyed another man who was one of their best. Just like they did to Colin Powell.

If we're lucky, maybe this will drive some much needed change in the republican party.

I keep hearing the same party line of "Sarah Palin was a great choice because she energized the base," and then I keep wondering who the hell this base actually was and how she was able to energize them? I mean, really, who are these people? Are they the kooky people in the funny hats at the Republican National Convention? Are they a group of retired women who don???t pay much attention to the news?

As an Obama supporter, I shouted to the rooftops in joy the morning that he announced the then unknown Sarah Palin as his running mate, and, within about 45 seconds of her first speech to the American public I actually said outloud "are you serious, this woman doesn't sound like she is running for Vice-President, she sounds like she is leading a PTA meeting or something!" And then, out of no where, she started talking about the PTA!!!! It was classic!

Within the first 48 hours of this announcement, everyone was scouring the world for information that would either prove or disprove that Governor Palin had any arguable business of being John McCain???s running mate, or if this was just another political stunt aimed at showing McCain to be a political ???maverick.??? I???m not going to get into the long list of things that immediately followed this (bad interviews, obvious scripted stump speeches, not answering the moderators questions in the VP debate, troopergate), but, again, I???m still trying to figure out how any of this energized the base? I mean, doesn???t ???the base??? have an opinion of whether or not they should like someone and at least a inherent need to feel comfortable knowing whether or not this person is capable of leading their Country? At what point did Sarah Palin convince them of any of this? I mean, I???m not even comparing her to Obama, McCain, or Biden here, but at what point did she even hint to the American public that she was knowledgeable enough about American politics to think on her feet and come to a relatively intelligent decision about ANYTHING if she had to? I watched this woman with great interest and a relatively open mind for months, it was BLATANTLY OBVIOUS that if you took away the speech writers, teleprompters, and canned talking points???..this person was totally lost when it came discussing anything of political substance. Kind of the Ashlee Simpson of the McCain campaign, if you will.

I???m not saying she???s a bad person; she seems like a nice lady. But, again, how did she energize the base? Who are these people! Is a heartbeat and a love for guns all it takes to energize you? If you are reading this as a member of the base, please help me understand! -Metropony

McCain is perhaps one of the greatest American Heroes and patriots we have been so priviledged to know. I am appalled that you have such meager words to say to him. If you do not agree with his politics that is fine. To say he is like George Bush makes you a sheep who has done no homework. The last laugh is on anyone voting Obama because of Bush, as you will see - Obama will only enhance the very Bush policies you protest against.

    • Posted By: fifi8989 @ 11/06/2008 9:02:03 PM

I completely Agree. If the people stopped pushing their religion on other people, and started accepting the fact that people have different views on the belief of a higher power, then the world would be a much better place. And maybe all this hatred and fighting would stop. But, one could only hope.
Using the bible as a guideline to rule a country has always ended badly. Insisting on having this country run by the church is just setting us up for another inquisition. Which, last time I checked went against all of our constitutional rights.

  • Posted By: jlgab @ 11/07/2008 7:05:09 PM

McCain should have picked a better VP and NOT run such negative campaign strategy. McCain has no right to slam someone else's character when he has lied at his job and he committed adultery while married to his first wife. His take on Iraq which is to just carry on the corrupt Bush war is wrong, plus his support for corporation tax cuts which send jobs overseas is certainly not a patriotic decision.

Sarah Palin is a fine lady who is the mother of five children and the governor of Alaska. You can only dream to be the American she is as your posts only show me you have no ambition except to slander people who no longer threaten your politics. Get over it. Pay attention to your new president-elect and leave these fine people alone. A majority of Republicans seem to be hoping Obama does well. They have not stooped as low as the liberal side and have risen far above the liberal baloney. All I see is the liberals continuing to show claws and sink to below substandard human morale. You have your wish. You have elected to destroy everything the country stood for. So don't worry. Be happy. And leave the Palin and McCain alone. They don't threaten your communist desires. This is a turbulent time in our history and we need to come together as one people, not just liberal and conservative, democrat or republican, etc to try to think of solutions out of this mess. It no longer matters who caused it, all that matters right now is who is going to solve it. All of us are. We are one people once again and its time to start living up to it.

I am continually amazed at the people who call Jesus a great man, teacher, motivator or whatever but then conclude he was delusional because He proclaimed to be the Son of God. You cannot praise him for his greatness and moral example on the one hand and reject His claim to deity on the other hand because it disturbs your worldview. That's intellectually dishonest. You're dismissing the very reason He gave for his ministry and it's NOT that he was a community organizer. He said He came to reconcile man with God the Father and He was never ambiguous about that. Neither were his disciples who, after hiding in fear following his crucifixion, came out 40 days later boldly proclaiming He had risen from the dead and calling on other to follow Him. All of them were tortured, murdered or cast into exile for their beliefs and not one of them recanted their testimony. Moreover, Christianity, unlike all the other messianic cults of the day, spread around the world like wildfire. These two observations alone ought to spark some questions in the minds of inquisitive people. I continue to be amazed by the total lack of intellectual curiosity on the part of so many who don't want to accept the possibility that Jesus's claims might be true because it means they would have to change the way they live and they don't want to do that.

    • Posted By: rexymeteorite @ 11/08/2008 2:06:27 AM

So let me order things in my head, if you will allow me to do that

      You contend:

      1. That Jesus was sent to earth to reconcile man with God, and for this reason he was not a community organizer because he wasnt "ambigous" about his purpose.
      2. That his followers went into hiding for fourty days and they came out of hiding to claim that "He" rose from "His" grave. They were tortured and killed and not one of them recanted.
      3. It is intellectually dishonest to say that Jesus was a great man and political leader but dellusional to think that he was God's son.
      4. That people who think that Jesus was not the son of God "lack intellectual curiousity"

Let me settle this point by point:

      • Posted By: rexymeteorite @ 11/08/2008 2:07:31 AM

        1. Community Organizers messages are not ambigous. How would they ever garner support if they were ambigous about their cause?
        2. A) Let me just say this: The bible has been translated about 250 times throughout history. The recounting of Jesus's death and rebirth has been changed from its original story about 30 times. (Source: Bentley & Zeiglers Traditions and Encounters). This means that the recounting of this story by Jesus's deciples is not in its original form. I personally do not know what was in their original recounting, and I outright reject the King James translation of the Holy Bible for its known historical biases that lean toward the Catholic church.
        B) There have been many examples throughout history where someone was willing to die for a lie. For example: people in cults will kill themselves for that cult because they think what they are being told is true. I am not saying that Christianity is a cult, but if a man with completely new ideas, and a new mindset who was absolutly inspirational and uplifting in anyway told me that he would rise again after death and to come out after his death to tell the world his death and rebirth story, you bet your ass I would, whether it was true or not. He probably forwarned his followers that they would be tortured and killed for telling that story, but if they really thought it to be true and that the torture and death was a test of their faith and fealty towards Jesus, most likely they died very happily, torture or not.
        3. I never said that I am not open to new ideas. If it is proven factually that Jesus rose from his grave and ascended to the kingdom of Heaven, then of course I would believe it, but what some Christians have a tendency of doing is siting the Holy Bible as a factual source. I do not believe that the current translation of the Bible is a factual source of information (see 2A). Once I have imperical proof of Jesus's ascension, I will no longer be skeptical.
        4. I think that I have pretty much proven this untrue. First it is a slippery slope to assume that people who think that Jesus was not the son of God have not at least brushed up on the topic. Second, I do have intellectual curiosity, because in my everyday life I am desperately searching for a religion that I can actually believe, and that alone proves intellectual curiosity.

        So there you go.

And also just to make sure I am not using information out of context: The Bible has been translated into 250 languages, both old and new, ranging from Latin to Swahili. That is the direct quote from the book. I took that to mean that the bible has, in fact, been translated 250 times. Just being clear.

Clarification point: Catholic biases: When interpreting the Bible it is accepted that the Catholic church left out key details about the life, death and rebirth of Christ (I don't remember what the source was, and I am at work so as soon as I get home I will post the source). The details that the church left out were things that did not "jive" with the church's view pertaining to what Christ's life should have been. This is known as a literary bias and THAT is intellectually unethical.

I am not trying to discount anyones faith, just to make sure you all understand. If you believe that Christ rose from his grave after his death, good for you. I just want to make it clear that I am not stupid and that I actually study things before I say them. Too many times I have seen on these blogs individuals who say things and later cannot back them up with at least some fact. I refuse to be that person.

Point 5: You say that Christainity "Spread like wildfire" in your post. Please remember that for about 300 years AFTER Christ's death, Christianity was pretty much forgotten. It has taken 2000 years to get to this point. I did not "spread like wildfire" it was slow and gradual, just like any new idea back before the information age. Hell, the concept of civilization took 2 millenia to spread from Mesopotamia to mondern day Europe. Christianity is not exempt from the rule that information back then traveled slowly, and therefore is not a special case.

Mr. Thomas: On Charlie Rose last night you said that Obama was "creepy" and that he stands outside of himself and watches the crowd watching him. Well, you are now Rush Limbaugh's new hero. You and Meacham. Do you think that you are so above us all that you can make statements like this and feed the hate machine? You own Obama an apology. Your arrogance is above the line of common decency.

Every single person who becomes the president of this country has opened their image to ridicule and opposition. It is not unusual & is to be expected. I don't find Obama to be creepy. But if someone else does, it is their opinion and we still (as of today) have freedom of speech. Instead of crying about someone who doesn't agree with Obama - why don't you say what you do agree with??? Not the rhetoric, but the actions you agree with.

A gracious concession speech by McCain. Alas, it was not his time, his time was in 2000. McCain sold his soul when he aligned himself with the very people who caused him to lose the GOP nominee in 2000 by using dirty underhanded tactics. McCain's # 1 problem-BUSH, his second biggest problem-Palin.

So then he DID have a tawdry affair with a lobbyist whom he illegally did favors for in the US legislature, but we're not supposed to be upset or expect him to be prosecuted merely because he outmaneuvered the media?
