I don't see a "rising star' in the GOP, All of these people seem to have a limited ability to actually think for themselves, they all seem to get on the daily mantra which must come as a memo each morning and at the end of the day if you listen to one you have heard them all.

  • Posted By: steviejo50 @ 11/06/2008 11:41:13 AM

This is just what we need - MSNBC to pick the new conservative leader. If we allow anyone in the media to annoint the rising star in the GOP, then we really are the stupid party!

Hey armygruntjoe, you are absolutly correct about him. But make sure you spell all your words correctly and dot all your i's and cross all your t's.

Cantor said Obama ran as a conservative. I thought the Republicans said Obama was a socialist? You people are so confusing.

    • Posted By: CJ13 @ 11/06/2008 11:32:35 AM

Running as something and being something are two totally seperate things. Many of his campaign stances were of a conservative nature, but his voting record (when it wasn't just "present") is lockstep liberal democrat. I won't call him a socialist, but many of his policies do lean that direction. I read this recently, and I think it makes a great point:
"In North Carolina Barak Obama made a speech in which he said:

???He???s called me a socialist for wanting to roll back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans so we can finally give tax relief to the middle class. I don???t know what???s next,??? Obama said at a rally at the Halifax mall here.

???By the end of the week, he???ll be accusing me of being a secret communist because I shared my toys in kindergarten. I shared my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.???

Obama misses the point. When he was a kid HE decided to share his peanut butter sandwiches and his toys. That is noble. That is generous. But what if the school had MANDATED that he share his food and his toys? That would be different. That would be Socialism.

What if Obama had said, ???When I was a kid, I shared Joe the Plumber???s peanut butter sandwiches and toys with the other kids in school???? That is VASTLY DIFFERENT.

      Think about it."

No, the jobs went overseas because of Clinton and his damn idiotic NAFTA. That KILLED American workers and still does today. Thanks for buying "Made by slave children in China". You've destroyed America and now CHina is fast becoming the biggest producer of goods.

    • Posted By: RO in Reno @ 11/06/2008 11:24:06 AM

First of all NAFTA stands for North American Fair Trade Agreement, it sent jobs to Canada and Mexico which it was designed to do, By GHW Bush, it was signed into law by Clinton but had he vetoed it, The Republican controlled Congress at the time would have just over rode the veto.
The move to send jobs to China was started by Nixon and taken to it's current point by GWBush.

It might be a good idea to add more choices for office next time and let them all join in on the debates. Congress has a lower rating than the President because they will not come together and get anything done on the tough issues like jobs, health care, and energy. This is a DO NOTHING CONGRESS!

  • Posted By: g8r4ever @ 11/06/2008 11:18:03 AM

The republicans cut their own throats. Bush lost the election for McCain. We still have the best 'team' in the world, just a different coach. I did not vote for Obama, but he will be our President and we must support him. I think if he could get our energy needs squared away, it will solve many of our problems. I just hope he doesn't let us become the 'doormat' for the rest of the world. Good luck President Elect Obama. I am a Christian and will pray for you. You have my respect and support. Now let's come together, and do what we need to do to get this country straight!

The last GOOD DEMOCRAT was Jfk. There hasn't been a good one since

  • Posted By: SM0084 @ 11/06/2008 8:45:25 AM

The great media who has broken down the election said the young people help push Obama over the top. They also said it looks like a long for for the republicans as these young voters are Democrat and their thinking is they would stay Democrat. What they fail to understand is the next election these younger voters will have grown up a bit and become a little smarter, which means trouble for the Democrats. Because as you get a little older and wiser you switch over to the republican side. So, all these yungs heads filled with mush will start becoming replublicans as they wise up and get into the real world. Thank you democrats for bring so many new republicans to the table.

You may want to read the article again and not just the parts that help your argument. The article siad what you said but it also questioned whether or not the youth vote was simply a referendum on JUST Obama and not the entire Democratic Party.

    • Posted By: bigdoggy @ 11/06/2008 10:07:42 AM

You are crazy. I started voting in 1980, voted twice for Ronald Regan. Eight years later i had grown up a bit and became a little smarter. The Repubican party offered nothing for the middle class, so discussed with them I voted for Dukakis, and have voted Democrat ever since. I tell people I voted for Regan twice, but got older and less stupid.

  • Posted By: d5e2s @ 11/06/2008 11:12:58 AM

I find all of this amusing. The President does not approve the budget, he does not pass legislation; he/she basically has no power to do anaything that Congress does not vote on and approve. The only way he can have abssolute power tis to have enough votes to overide his veto.

Bill CLinton did not create jobs. Congress set an agenda that allowed jobs to be created.. George Bush did not destroy the economy, the actions of Congress let that happen (refusing to oversee Freddie & Fannie in 2004, refusing to allow for drilling for new energy, etc.). The Founding Fathers made certain that the President did not have enormous power, and also set limits on Congress to keep them from having too much power.

The only way things can go to hell is for one party to have control of the Legislative and Executive Branches of govenrment. Thank God that did not happen, although we came dangerously close. Look at the 60's with all of the social programs Johnson put in with the aid of the House and Senate. Those programs have caused this Nation to choke on the costs, and have dragged down and created so much poverty that we may never overcome the problem.
We survived every President since George Washisngton, and we will survive Obama, regardless of what anyone thinks or feels about him. I did not vote for him, did not support him, but I know we will survive him. We have survived Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for the past two years, so we can withstand anything that Obam throws at the country. Politics runs in cycles. It is the Cemocrats turn, and they will screw it up, and the Rerpublicans will come back into favor, and then they will screw it up, and the Democrats will come back. Read history......remember, it repeats itself; and somehow, this Nation still manages to survive.

No matter who got elected, the economy will get better over the next four years and they will give themselves the credit (like Clinton did) and get re-elected. We are in a typical economy cycle. Granted it is worse than a normal low; however, the economy was over-inflated over the past 10 years and grew too fast. The economy is unfortunately, adjusting itself.

It is not about the president, I am concerned about Congress. Congress needs to change. The Democrats and their scary looking and thinking leader (Pelosi) promised change in the first 100 days of Democratic party rule. Where is the change? Congress never oversaw Wall street and put in measures to oversee any companies that may (WAS) taking advantsge of Americans. There are no measures to limit speculation, especially on the price of oil. The speculators that caused the increase in the price of gas, are the same Wall Street companies that are closing. They caused the price of gas to rise so they could make billions. And still, the democratic congress does nothing! The price of gas is going low becuase the majority of speculators are now out of business.

Who is going to keep congress in check? Obama? I don't think so....He won't stir up anything with his friends. Why does America keep re-electing these terrible career politicians? How can you go into congress and come out having millions of dollars? If we want change. We have to vote in new people, otherwise we are fooling ourselves. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. We need to look at the records of these career politicians and vote out those that have done nothing for the greater good of the people they represent.

This going to be a long rode and time before recovery. I hate to say this as I have been without a job for 9 months and nothing is looking good. I hope I am WRONG! But I don't think Amricans will see the change that Obama promised. He even admits that he may not be able to do it in 4 years. Afterall, policies usually do not take affect until about 3-4 years after a president is elected. Look at 9/11. Bush didn't cause this. The stupid layback and wait Clinton administration caused this by not taking the threats seriously.

This guy is awful... he does not support traditional conservatism! He thinks teachers should lead prayer in schools, he thinks everyone should be able to own any gun he wants, he voted no to protect the middle class from ATM tax payments. He gave bush full approval to do what he wants. He voted no to have sexual orientation be a protected status from discrimination. He voted not to close the loopholes for offshore voting. He represents the past of the Republican brand. As a Republican I will NEVER support this man... WE NEED TO MOVE BACK to our roots... stay out of peoples lives, and lover taxes for the middle class, and lower spending.... I cannot believe they would go back to the social conservative agenda after this election... it saddens me that I might have to call myself a democrat.

I do not know much about Mr. Cantor. But if he is in fact a rising star he will soon be shot down by the mainstream media and the Dems. Much like George Allen was. Theres no way they will allow anyone electable to standout. As with McCain they want to leave only the weak standing.

    • Posted By: spjon @ 11/06/2008 11:11:06 AM

George Allen shot himself in the foot and didn't need the help of the media to do it. I'm sick of people blaming the media for the stupid things Republicans do.

  • Posted By: n2deep2008 @ 11/06/2008 11:10:34 AM

Coming from a Los Angeles Independent voter, this election cycle had some bad choices for President. I don't believe Obama will come close to getting America back on track. He's a smooth talker. The McCain side didn't have a clear message either! I did like Sarah Palin. She gave the Rep. party some energy that McCain couldn't deliver. I don't like the fact that a lot of the Dem. media saying she has no experience to be President (when she's not running for that office!) and not challenge Obama who was! This was only because she's a Rep. woman. There were very few tough questions that Obama had to answer. But the national media (especially MSNBC and the NYT) were just horrible! If you're for Obama, just come out and say so. The media is supposed to report the news and not help make it. I'm really hoping for the best of America.

I was just talking to one of my buddies who fought in nam. He thinks we ought to fly the flags at half mast after the beating we got on this election.

Stars are not what this nation needs. We need leaders of substance, intelligence and compassion for the victims of 40 years of "compassionate conservatism." That's why so many of us came together to elect Barach Obama and Joe Biden.

  • Posted By: kennewf @ 11/06/2008 7:43:06 AM

It's about time Republicans start taking the blame for their misgivings. Trickle down economics doesn't work and has never worked. Just giving the wealthy a blanket tax cut doesn't mean they will invest it the economy or their busness to create jobs. They could just but that 3rd vacation home. Tax breaks fort he wealthy need to have specific requirements as they do for business that add jobs in America. The middle class are the ones who spend and spur the economy. They need the tax breaks to generate the spending again. It's going to be a bleak Holiday spending this year!

    • Posted By: bies25 @ 11/06/2008 11:07:45 AM

Yes, well, 3rd vacation homes have to be built and maintained and result in property tax revenues as well as income for realtors, assessors, and inspectors. That doesn't help the economy?

I will never comprehend how people don't understand that rich people hire people to do things, creating jobs; invest their money, creating wealth, in the form of the holdings all of our pensions and 401k's are made up of; or simply let it sit in the bank, where the bank can then loan it out to you to buy a car or a house. Giving everybody in the middle class an extra $3 a week just means we can all buy more Doritos. You tell me which one helps the economy more.

I agree with jradmacher's assessment of Cantor......maybe he and Palin could run on the same ticket...they seem to share similiar views, ambition and ruthlessness! I think the majority of people are weary of this sort of politician and want to get rid of the ones that hold extreme views in either direction. If they had stayed out of our pocketbooks, bedrooms and churches more of them might still be in office.

  • Posted By: Bornagainliberal @ 11/06/2008 11:06:36 AM

Stars are not what this nation needs. Now more than ever we need intelligence, new and better ideas and compassion for the victims of 40 years of "compassionate conservatism."
