      Vanessa -

      1) I didn't vote for Obama.
      2) I'm not fat or lazy - you know nothing about me.
      3) If you are so great, why aren't you the President. Maybe because you can't even write a complete sentence? Oh, I forgot, your forte is fashion, right? As for the remote possibility of you being in school, I highly doubt it. There is not a professor in this country that would give a passing grade to someone with your writing skills.
      4) You are a big-mouth loser who cannot accept defeat.
      5) You couldn't even lead a child to a candy bar.

Comment: Glam- you are ridiculous. why are you so concerned about how First Lady Michelle pay for her clothing, etc? Were you so concern with President Bush and previous presidents wives clothing and expenses? I mean are you serious? You all have to find smething negative to say! What are you doing for yourself? Does anyone keep track of how much you're spending? Do we know what's in your closet or wallet? Simple-minded people"

    Good morning, MCortinas -

That is the very question I was pondering when I saw your post. I'm pretty new to this, but does anyone else remember these types of ruminations going on during any past elections? I would be fascinated to know the answer. Maybe this is what always happens. It doesn't make it any more appropriate, but maybe it does happen in other elections. If the cost of Mrs. Obama's dress and the source of the funds used to pay for the dress are not something that has been discussed in past elections, why now? Because she's black? I don't know. Frankly, it's just not something I've ever been concerned about. I know that there are protocol's in place to deal with many issues, and I'm sure this is one of them.

As a Republican, I will admit that I was shocked over the amount spent on Gov. Palin's wardrobe. However, I wasn't particularly angry as I never saw any information provided regarding past candidates. I've now read that Mrs. Obama's election night outfit was $3500 and I've read that it was $9000. Comparatively, that seems like a drop in the bucket to me, irregardless of who paid for it.

    Anyone have any further info.?

Glam, I agree with you.....people are proclaiming Obama as their "SAVIOR" and he might not be the ONE !!!! Firt of all ,he has a tough job to TRY in straght the current economy deficit , than worry and to make A CHANGE FOR LIBERALS and also he will be concentarting in add his CLEAN $ 400,000 dollares salary into his savings accountSSSSSSSSSS !!!! Give me a break "blindfolded " people, get real and don't see Obama as your SAVIOR because to save this country will take more than just 4 OBAMA YEARS. Get Real and start to see CLEAR that our new president as a MAN and NOT AS OUR SAVIOR because he is NOT "JESUS". PLEASE ,LET 's HAVE MORE FAITH IN OURSELVES AND BE " REALISTIC" ABOUT THE CURRENT SITUATION OF OUR COUNTRY AND WHAT OUR NEW PRESIDENT REALLY CAN DO !!!!

I find your comment extremely blasphemous (look it up). I have not read a single comment, nor heard a single verbal word from anyone proclaiming that Mr. Obama is their God or Savior. Only that they pray he will be able to turn this country around. How dare you call yourself a Christian!

Another thing is, since Obama was so astute in using the Technology age to secure votes and funding, why can???t he use the technology age to run the White House and his own personal life? It seems his wife and kids can???t do anything without the grandma, and it will cost a packet to relocate the grandma. So why don???t the wife and kids stay on in Hyde Park, and Obama commutes on a weekly weekend basis to visit? A lot of people in this country are living separate from their spouses and kids for job purposes. They go to work Mon - Friday, and get home every alternate weekend or so, whenever they get time off from their employer. Why cant Obama???s ???change??? include that? That way, the kid???s schooling won???t be disrupted, they get to be around their usual friends and Michelle and her pals get to stay together ane meet up whenever they want, no undesirable riffraff needs to enter the hallowed halls of the White House - such as those of Michelle???s friends who are unwed mothers, or who have children from multiple fathers - and yes, she can???t really deny her roots or living amongst those kinds of people can she - how can you give security clearances to so many broods, won???t that take up a lot of valuable security and homeland security time and money? That way, President Obama can concentrate on bringing ???change??? to America as he has so much claimed that he wanted to do throughout his campaign, he can focus on his priorities, and the wife can take care of the kids in the security of their beloved home in Chicagoland, where they grew up. They can communicate daily, video conferencing can be easily and inexpensively arranged, she can continue to be a demure first lady as she claims she will be, and a good loving mother who will be able to maintain 100% involvement in her kids??? lives, and her husband gets to do his job without worries, without extra overhead costs, and he can actually show the American people what this ???change??? is all about. Since it was his idea to ???get with the hi-tech era???, how about bringng some of that hi-tech??? life to his White House-Hyde Park House? Commuting is the way to go. Saves everyone money, and makes sure the new President - who has risen to meteoric heights if a few years even given with his limited experience - is on point. When you hire a man to do a job, make sure he does it right. Or are we going to be Bush again?

    • Posted By: BelindaK @ 11/08/2008 10:08:41 AM

Now there's a great idea! Let's have the President's children grow up without a father. Gosh, why didn't I think of that?

Yea, but she bought her dress and her kids clothes with the family's money, not funds from anywhere else. If you're buying your own stuff, you get to decide how much to spend. And I doubt she's the botox sort, she seems real stable and secure in herself to allow herself to age gracefully, like a lot of us. I do admire this woman so so very much, maybe more than any other First Lady in my life time. Sen. Clinton brought intelligence to the table (thank you so much for that) but Michelle will bring not only intelligence but grace and love. Boy, and I can't wait to see those lovely girls grow up into whoever they will become. It'll be good to have kids in the White House again--somehow humanizes the place and makes it feel less like another office. And, yes, maybe Michelle Obama's dress on victory night was a little unusual--but I didn't get to see it up close to really tell what was going on there. I liked the colors a lot. I wonder if she'll choose a designer like a lot of past First Ladies have done.

    • Posted By: BelindaK @ 11/08/2008 6:02:07 AM

I thought Mrs. Obama's dress was gorgeous and she looked fantastic in it (and I didn't even vote for them). I loved the fact that she didn't wear something stodgy. The whole family just looked so nice.

    Vanessa -

I apologize for being rude about your language skills. That was wrong of me. However, you came to this site for the sole purpose of cramming your beliefs down our throats. You have made it clear that no one else's opinion counts unless it agrees with yours. Furthermore, the subject you came to force upon us has nothing to with the article or the conversations taking place. Yet, you persisted. Which part of OFF-TOPIC were you having trouble with? You are welcome to your beliefs, but you do not have the right to lecture me or try to force me to believe your opinions. You simply have the right to state them. I disagree with you and I'm allowed to do that. That's what America is all about. By the way, in my humble opinion, if you have been in this country for 15 years, you should have better English skills. Maybe you should work on yourself before you worry about what everyone else is doing.

First of all, I am not on welfare. I am disabled, but worked for many years. Furthermore, while I was working 60 hours per week and had a 6 month old baby, I put myself through college at night. So, yeah, I think I could manage another language.

      • Posted By: BelindaK @ 11/08/2008 5:45:52 AM

Vanessa - If I were to adopt another country to live in, I can assure you that I would manage to master the language in 15 years. You obviously haven't spent much time trying. There are many immigrants that also work and raise families. They have been here a much shorter period of time, but actually bothered to learn our language to a reasonable degree and are able to communicate well enough to be understood. After 15 years in our country, your words still have to be deciphered. If you want to be an American, learn the damn language.

Bear in mind that Michelle???s campaign win dress cost about $3,500, and her daughters just for that evening averaged $200 each???.. tally that to about 200 days a year, and what do you get? close to $800,000. Not including stockings, sweaters, undergarments, swim clothes, gym clothes, uniforms, etc. You get my drift. And the skin color will become noticeably lighter over the next four years, mark my words. Shiseido and Botox anyone? You'll think I'm penny-pinching - wth this economy, shouldn't everyone, including the new president? Or are we really just the goats he needed to get those electoral votes, and easily dismissed with absolutely no emotion (and in fact a "fine, i'm in, now what do you lot want.. now just go away until I need you need time" face) on his big election night? Or did no one notice that?

Are you suggesting that they will dress that way every day?

And what do you think she should have worn? Blue jeans? A potato sack?

      Give it a rest.

. Is Obama going to pass on $8 Million in private school costs to the Taxpayer for his two girls? Is that his idea of ???change???? True CHANGE would be sending them to a local public school - and really learning first-hand about what thie country???s educational needs are. Either that, or paying for private school himself, through his own six-figure Presidential salary, like everyone else in this country is supposed to do. Presidents do not pay federal income taxes. How about Obama bringing in some ???Change??? to that? I for one would like to see less hypocrisy about his ???change??? and more sincere action. Let Obama come into office with nothing but his ideas and the clothes on his family???s back, and of course their luggage. Let him pay for their clothing and beauty needs from his own paycheck. As President I understand he will need some good quality suits for himself to be presentabe in front of the world???s leadership. The Presidential Office can provide for his suits, up to a reasonable limit, say $50,000 worth of clothes a year? That can be an allowable benefit that the US public would deem reasonable for their Commander-in-Chief. Anymore, would make him a Commandeering-Thief.

    • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 11/07/2008 11:22:19 PM

Have you looked at President-elect Obama? His suits are beautifully tailored and he seems to have plenty. And if he needs more, he will pay for them out of his $400,000 paycheck and/or his $50,000 expenses account. Besides, the Obamas' had an income of about $4 million last year -- mostly due to royalties on the President-elect's books -- they can afford to clothe themselves and their children, especially since royalties on the books will probably increase in the wake of the election.

To understand the split between public and private expenses try this: If the president wants a new umbrella, he must pay for it himself. If he wants a special kind of umbrella because he is going to meet pigmys in the Amazon Rain Forest, that is a business expense and the government pays for it. If the president gets a yen for a hamburger, he pays for it himself. If he takes that hamburger to a meeting with the prime minister of Britian and shares it, then the government will pay for it. Schools, camps, ballet classes, piano lessons for president's children are all paid from the the president's personal income. Expenses for all family members -- spouse, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, even good friends -- are paid out of personal income. Vacation expenses are paid by the family. Official travel is paid by the government. Expenses for family to travel on official business trips are paid by the family -- unless the family member has an official role to play during the travel (think of Jackie Kennedy's trip to Paris or Laura Bush's trips to South American and Africa). For state visits in which the spouse is expected to participate, the government will pay expenses. If the Obamas' want to bring along the girls and grandma, they will pay those expenses out of personal income. Government expense accounts -- even the president's -- are overseen by the General Accounting Office.Expenses for running the White House are split between official expenses to mantain the first floor and personal expenses to maintain the residential quarters. Presidents pay all residential expenses themselves, although they get to live rent-free and use the furniture on the premises, as well as anything stored by the GAO. Some presidents have moved their own furniture into some rooms -- I remember Jerry and Betty Ford brought their own bedroom furniture to the White House.

BTW -- Pettiness is sooooo unattractive.

      • Posted By: BelindaK @ 11/08/2008 5:56:36 AM

Thank you for your reasonable responses to idiotic rantings. I found your answer to be clear, concise and informative. And, yes, pettiness is unattractive, isn't it?

    • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 11/07/2008 11:34:43 PM

Part of the decision of where to send the Obama girls to school is the need to provide security. Public schools, by their nature, are more accessible than private schools and more difficult for Secret Sevice to maintain a secure perimeter. When Amy Carter went to public school in Washington, Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House was still open to traffic and people could walk all the way up to the White House gate without interference. The world has changed since then and I'm sure that the abiltiy for the Secret Service detail to discretely look after the girls will be a big consideration in the selection of schools. Whatever school (or schools) is selected, the Obamas will pay the tuitions out of their own pocket -- just as the Clintons (Sidwell Friends) and the Gores (Washington Cathedral School for Girls and St. Alban's) and the Johnsons (Washington Cathedral School for Girls) and the Nixons (Washington Cathedral School for Girls) and the Fords (Holton Arms School) did.

As for those saying that Obama's $400k salary will suffice to pay for "private" expenses, as Vanessa200 said below, that's hogwash. $400k is what an average doctor makes, or a medical-field couple, or a good lawyer, or a good builder, etc.. It's still not enough really even for those well-paid jobs - esp. in this economy - to fill all the gas in those two or three family cars, send the kids to private school, pay off a mortgage, pay for groecries and eating out, entertainment, school uniforms, sports equipment, ballet and piano classes...AND those designer dresses. really, when highly-paid professionals can't afford that lifestyle, what makes anyone think a president will be relying on his salary to clothe, school and feed his family? No, that's what we the brainless taxpayers are for. Everyone knows that all the presidential income goes straight into their savings accounts, and even the first family's undies come from the taxpayer's pockets. I voted for change. Now I want real change - not just talk and hot air. It has to start from the top, and it has to start from that personal side of his that he has harped so much on the campaign trail about. I want him to be ACCOUNTABLE to the America people - and that means real transparency in everything. We're paying to put food on his table. Don't we deserve his consideration, moderation, and economizing? It should be that way for ALL presidents. But this is the first one who's promised to DELIVER on CHANGE. So is he really going to - or is just "election promises"? That was one expensive election promise if that's all there way to it - coz plunking down $50 donations for his empty promises instead of paying for your gas and walking all the way to work is not going to have been worth it - all the millions he made off donations... is that right? Is that ethical? Is that fair? And real change is when you go to ay your income taxes and there's a box on there that says where do you want your tax money to go - schools roads, housing, lobyying congress to lower the smoking age to five and a half, or do we want to fund the first family's kid's summer camp? That's what real change will be.

It is not petty to question a President on his spending habits, starting first and foremost with his family. After all, the hue and cry about Sarah Palin was her governership using state funds for her kids benefit... what do you think will stop the Obama family from abusing the PRESIDENTIAL office? It is a platform of CHANGE that he was elected on, so he should be sincere and stick to it.. or be like any other two-faced opportunistic politician, in which case he did not deserve that landslide in electoral votes. I am concerned as every citizen should be, because the money for these politician's salaries and hoopla comes from MY paycheck - and yours. We taxpayers are fuding their (extravagant) lifestyles. Michelle Obama has clearly stated that her mother will be able to live "anywhere in DC". That concerns me... why should that incremental cost - however large or small it may be - come out of good honest harworking taxpayer money that should go to roads, schools, buildings and defense? Which is why we taxayers pay our taxes in the first place. As for wearing designer wear, these politicians claim to represent WE, THE PEOPLE. Do "we the people" live off other people's taxes? Do we the people buy designer wear off other people's income/taxes? If you are a thief, you do. Not if you're anywhere near honest. You want to change politics in DC? Change the way preseidential "expense accounts" work. Eliminate them. Pay th eman a salary and have him take his wallet out to pay for the goods and services he and his family consume - like the rest of the United States. Obama is not a businessman, he is not employing 20 or 200 workers, he is not out to make a profit - why does he need designer wear? Why does his wife or kids? He is the President(-elect). The taxpayer is employing HIM. Its the other way around. The shoe should be on the other foot. That's what Bush forgot, do we want to make the same mistake again? Giving too much power over us to one human being, or his cadre of loved and hugged ones?

He will be making $400,000 dollares as his salary and I guess he cannot pay for the clothes his family will wear in the entire years so all those expensives will be coming from the U.S Treasury from tax payers and other government's income from investments.Maybe if our fisrt lady goes Shopping at Marshalls or TJ Max MAYBE her husband's salary will be able to pay for her dresses and for the two daughters dresses and schools. Please stop deceiving many iliriate Americans that the President will be paying for this and that...blah,blah,blah out of his pocket because IS NOT TRUE.He and his family will be having all for free and his salary will go to an savings account !!!! To me, Obama will be no diffrent than all the other Presidents, when it comes to his Money.....Why do you all think he wants to be the president so much??? Just for a freakin'change in a President's skin complexion ???? Of course not !!! He will be having all the same privileges any other president had and will fill his pocket as much as he can ,while living at the White House and making part of the American History !!!!! When it comes to money, most people DO change ....specially if they don't hold true values so let wait and see what will change for us and to President Obama. Only TIME will prove to us WHAT changes he can make being our President. WILL BE A CHANGE FOR AMERICANS OR A CHANGE FOR HIM SELF ???? OR BOTH ????? Let see...folks If REALLY all those Votes that "Americans" gave to him were worth it for our pockets or for his......??????????? Like that song from the band ASIA , "Only Time Will Tell " !!!!!!

    Glam -

I believe you have some good questions. As never paid much attention to politics in the past, I don't really know what the previous "rules of engagement" have been. If these things were covered for previous presidents, then I would think, certainly, they should be covered now. Further, I don't think any solid decisions have been made yet, so we should wait and see what the end result is. What about the family of previous presidents? Does anyone know the living arrangements for them? I don't personally have a problem with them bringning the grandmother, because of the young age of the children. I don't find it out-of-bounds that she would be considered as a necessity to the family.

Personal expenses for the president's family are paid by the president -- that includes schooling for his (or her) children and living expenses for additional family members or friends (FDR had several close friends living in the White House). The First Family pays for the groceries in the kitchen in their residential quarters, while the government pays for the pantry on the first floor from which state dinners and other official functions are supplied. The First Family pays for its own clothing -- although, often designers will "lend" outfits for exposure -- something that is seen as promoting the fashion industry (and creating jobs) in the United States. Both Jackie Kennedy and Nancy Reagan, for example, promoted American fashion. Pet supples for the new puppy (or puppies) will be paid by the Obamas. I don't know why people are getting so petty about the future First Family before they've even taken up residence in the White House. The idea that the president should "commute" back to Chicago is laughable. First of all, the Secret Service would be appalled -- and the expense of setting up a permanent 24/7 Secret Service outpost outside the Obama residence in Hyde Park would be extremely expensive. Then, if there ever was a crisis -- God forbid -- the Secret Service would have to collect the Obama girls from Chicago and transport them to a safe location. Besides, who thinks that the president actually takes weekends off? Oh . . . I forgot. . . .George Bush does.

Glam- you are ridiculous. why are you so concerned about how First Lady Michelle pay for her clothing, etc? Were you so concern with President Bush and previous presidents wives clothing and expenses? I mean are you serious? You all have to find smething negative to say! What are you doing for yourself? Does anyone keep track of how much you're spending? Do we know what's in your closet or wallet? Simple-minded people

Bear in mind that Michelle???s campaign win dress cost about $3,500, and her daughters averaged $200 each???.. tally that to about 200 days a year, and what do you get? close to $800,000. Not including stockings, sweaters, undergarments, swim clothes, gym clothes, uniforms, etc. You get my drift. And the skin color will become noticeably lighter over the next four years, mark my words. Shiseido Botox anyone?
