The first words the embassy people will learn in Farzi will be "Hands up infidels."

Exactly what specific terrorist act has Iran committed? Name one. and if you think that taking the embassy was a terrorist act. I guess that you don't recall that the Shah was in the US and we would not extradite him for prosecution. Read our history about the 1953 US overthrow of their western educated democratically elected president where we installed the Shah into power and he murdered and pillaged the Iranian people for 30 years. Hey they are some real terrorists and we are "good" people. The Persian (Iranian) culture was in existence long before Europeans developed the ability to write. Have some respect. No one appointed us to perpetuate our beliefs onto the rest of the world. Of course the Iranians have a right to nuclear weapons. We also have the right to counterattack if we are attacked. No brainer. Hitler was Hitler. United States is United States. Iran is Iran. don't get confused. PS; ABC and the LA Times are "for profit commercial enterprises" not news providers. Did Brittany wear any panties today? Think.

Has any one read recent reports from Iran filed on ABC News and in the LA Times?. Achmadinejad is in serious trouble. Iran's economy is collapsing. Inflation and unemployment are rampant and out of control. I read reports that last year gasoline riots erupted. The collapsing price of oil is creating economic havoc in Iran. The Iranian government has three choices. It can continue to go nuclear creating a larger national debt and more inflation, or it can cut back on social programs which buy votes. In addition elections are slated for June of 2009, and if you were to run an opinion poll right now, Obama might be a lot more popular than Achmadinejad, especially among the young. A regime that alienates its young cannot survive.

Remember, Obama's funny name? Well, Hussein happens to be the name of a greatly revered religous leader. It also means good and handsome. Barack means blessing. Think of how Obama's name resounds in Iran.

I think Obama should take his time talking to Iran. Obama has proven himself already to be cautious. In addition, one of my former students called him Barack O'BALLA. How might Obama's knowledge of basketball relate to Iran when the Iranian government is in it's last 6 months and Obama has control of the ball (and a lead in the score.)?

If we really want to "bomb" Iran, let's use a smart bomb. First we need to cut down our consumption of gasoline any way we can. The lower the price of oil, the more problems for Iran. Then we need to launch Project Apollo and other green technology plans IMMEDIATELY. Consider them national defense. A prudent man, Obama will probably wait and consult experts before determining when to answer Iran's letter. He might decide to wait until after the Iranian elections. He'll probably have a lot of other concerns before then.

If we are at all intelligent, we'll recognize that we already have slammed the Iranian regime of mullash with a couple of lethal blows. Let's play it smart.

America is a strange place. The worst thing in the world is to speak with leaders of another nation to find a solution both can benefit from. But threatening another nation with a pre-emptive nuclear strike is OK!

    As a second comment

Appeasement and diplomacy are not the same thing. I dont think that we have to accept their form of goverment or even like it to be diplomatic and allies with Iran. I think that we have to go into talks with Iran with an open heart and ready to take on new ideas. Maybe we can have some kind of deal on trade with them. They need things from us, we need things from them. Maybe we make some sort of pact to protect them (as long as they dont attack Israel) and they will agree to do the same.

As to the nuclear thing, perhaps instead of us b*tching about them having nukes, we lead the world in getting rid of ours first. I think that to being a leader means doing whatever it is you ask your followers to do, and if that means America degrading its "Nuclear Superpower" status to just "Superpower status" then so be it.

Iran could really be a strong ally for us in the Middle East if they and we were just open to it.

Oh yes they are. Indeed,''appeasement''is a very form of diplomacy. Molotov ,the arch Soviet diplomat, appeased Hitler at Stalins request in entering into the Non-Aggression Treaty. Turkey was appeased by both German and Britsh/French diplomats in trying to pull this country to one side or the other in both world wars. Chamberlains appeasement to Hitler was intrisically based upon diplomacy regarding the fate of Czechoslovakia. American Grew and Stimsons ''Open Hand''diplomacies in the 1930s were based upon appeasing Imperial Japan, then bent on Chinese conquest. Forms of appeasement and diplomacy not only go hand in hand, but are the same thing when applied in a manner denoting unsurety, weakness, confusion, or national non-involvement on the portion of the participating nations peoples.[America from 1925-1941 was just such one of these nations].

How will Mr. Obama deal with this, throw a barbeque for these people on the White House lawn? He is unprepared to handle this situation. Good thing McCain is willing to stand by and hold his hand.

World leaders must resolve problems diplomatically and not use brute force or military action. So far Bush had achieved NOTHING in all the regions or nations when he has sent the US army to solve problems. Many innocent lives were wasted and the so-called sacrifice by the US soldiers results to NOTHING, all in vain. All what he has done was acting cowboy.

I am all for a US contact point in Iran. The current mullahs aren't dong so good with oil at $65. Their budget makes ours look like a picnic about now. President A(whatever) is clearly losing touch with even his own Parliament. The people are getting tired of his aggravation of the rest of the world and Iranian inflation. Iran is not directly supporting general international terrorism, even if they are doing so indirectly. Their efforts are mainly aimed at Iraq. Pakistan is the exclusive center in the global terrorism department. Terrorism only works when it is a pain in the backside. Now that Bin Laden has taken it upscale the world in general is putting an end to it. I can't see a full scale embassy, but a contact point will provide an open door when Iran is ready. And that time is coming soon.

    American/Iranian negotiations now!

    • Posted By: YashBudini @ 11/07/2008 11:20:27 AM

Oh, an office in the land of the axis of evil. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Hey Bush, can you spell flip-flopper?

The wider strategy for the US/UK/Israel is to pull Iran away from the strengthening Russo-Chinese Axis (economically and geostrategically) whilst also enlisting her to assist further with cleaning up the mess left in Iraq and Afghanistan. The question is if the gamble over the former goal will pay off, especially considering the built up influences that Moscow and Beijing already play in Tehran. Still, worth the valiant effort short of a disastrous third war that would cripple the US economically faster than any credit default swap tsunami would....

IRAN DOES NOT HATE US! They love western culture, and I think that if we just talked to them they would be an incredible ally. We need to talk, build bridges and keep doors of communication open, instead of burning bridges, pre-emptive striking and pissing people off. We can still be the "world's cop" we just have to police the right damn people!!!!

As a person who lived in Iran during the US embassy take over in Teheran, I would be very cautious dealing with the Iranian government. They are not to be trusted. At the same time I think it would be good idea to start a relationship with them and decrease the political tension. As rvcotell mentioned earlier, we americans love our short term memory. In the fifties the CIA and MI-6 over threw the Shah of Iran using $6000.00 dollars, then after the Shah conceeded to the Brits, they used another $6000.00 dollars to reinstate the Shah back into power under the GB and US control. 80% of the Iranians don't like the Islamic dictatorship and would like to return Iran back to pre-Islamic Republic era. I think the Iranian government needs to be changed from within by the Iranian people with the help of the west. But in such a way that the west would not take advantage the new government. US needs to respect the sovereignty of other nations without interjecting their own political agenda on them. That's when we get into trouble with other countries.
