Frankly, I am sick of all these religious people and their various litmus tests for candicates to determine which one is closer to their imaginary friend. Just to jog everybody's memory - our current president could not have been elected without the support of all the bible beaters. Look where that got us - an economic collapse, skyrocketing unemployment and a war that has no end in sight.

"...almost every person of faith EXCEPT those whose church cultures insists on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ."
We have come very far from the {correct} views of our founding fathers. We can't know--truly know--each other without a personal relationhsip; same is true with God, Christ, and Spirit--which IS how we receive of Them. The key word in the quote is "except"; we are seeing and shall see more and more that those whose beliefs, doctrines, and practices insist on that personal relationship are indeed, the correct ones. Do note, I am not a radical, nor a fanatic, and my "tone" proves that out. By the way, upon salvation, we are still sinners, whether is be stealing a piece of gum, or murdering, BUT salvation should take away our "want to" or desire, or inclination to- do what is wrong. Yes, we're secure for all eternity, but the "do anything I want to" thought purely slaughters the point; only an ignorant would proclaim his salvation (persoanal relationship) in such a manner.

    Respectfully,

William Penn said...Right is right even if everyone is against it and wrong is wrong even if everyone is for it.
Abortion is murder...it is wrong...no matter how many "Christians" say it isn't.

Jesus Christ is all there is to Christianity, without believing that He was , He died for "our" sins, and He was risen again in three days, you are not a christian, you are not born again and I will not =see you in Heaven.

      Matthew 25, 31 - 46

31 ???When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory.
32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left.
34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand,
      ???Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;
35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.???
37 Then the righteous will answer him, ???Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?
38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing?
39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you????
40 And the king will answer them, ???Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.???
      41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, ???You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;
42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.???
44 Then they also will answer,
???Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you????
45 Then he will answer them, ???Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.???
46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.???

Imagine that. Jesus expected us to follow his example and live our lives in a Christian manner. We can't just say "I believe," and be done with it.

I once worked with a born again Christian who told me that since he was born again he would go to heaven regardless of what he did. He said that he could murder someone and still go to heaven. I think that about sums up this mentality. He didn't seem to think he had to "follow Christ" through his actions.

That in the 21st Century we are still encumbered by stone age superstition is a sad statement indeed. Only until we unshackle ourselves from this self-delusion will we truly be able to explore the full potential of mankind. I really hope Obama's public statement of faith is simply politically necessary posturing. Bust Jr. was the epitome of faith based thinking and look where that got us.

Thank goodness that most far right "holy rollers" are hypocrites. The political issues are what made this election, as it should be. The faster the reps realize they have no business in the bedroom or telling a woman what she can and cant do, the better.
Leave the religious hocus-pocus in the privacy of your own home/community, where it belongs.

Your last paragraph explains exactly why this election doesn't necessarily warrant the title of the article. Just because Christians voted for Obama does not mean they agree with his stance on abortion or Gay rights. The fact that 3 states passed bills prohibiting gay marriage proves that. This election for many came down to IRAQ and the economy. It will be interesting to see if these Christians who didn't want to be "single issue voters" will rise up and confront the pro-choice \ pro-gay democratic regime they just put into office. If the Cliinton years are any indication, the answer is just maybe. Note that it is one thing to vote when your options are binary - but every Sunday they are going church, pondering what it means to be a Christian, and the conviction of the Holy Spirit can be strong and completey overwhelming. Never, under estimate a work of God within the Christian church of the United States.

Comment:The evangelical agenda is so narrow! I wish they would extend their concerns for embryos to other forms of life--even fully formed, conscious human beings who die in great numbers in campaigns of mass organized violence. Somehow evangelicals are wishy-washy about war. Why are they so focused on abortion as THE litmus test of a person's morality?

For all of us who believe in God, let's repent of our complaining, and set aside time - good time - to pray, even fast, for what is to come. We have to pray for the coming years under a new government. .As a Chrstian, you should read Jeremiah 29:7 - the principle of God's people praying for the welfare of the governments over them. Let's ask God for guidance and to lead this nation in the right path.

I always find it curious that reporters will rush to describe Obama's faith as "deep and religious." How do they know? Do they know his heart? It's just silly. What's not silly is the fact that a "religious" person would defend the slaughter of small human beings for, among other reasons, the sake of lifestyle expediency. I can't get past that. It's life. It's a non-negotiable. Deride it as a litmus test, but the illusory value of tax cuts pales to defenseless babies

Why is this about race- it seems one has committed a crime if you did not vote for Obama- well 48 million did not agreee- 48 % of America sees things differently- not bigots- Its America and its ok to disagree.
The avg person waiting on their first entitlement check will be just as poor in 4 years because one has to work for a living-

Jesus Christ ia all there is to being a Christian. Because He was, He gave His life for our sins, He was risen again three days later, by believing you are saved-born again. You either believe this or I will not see you in Heaven.

    • Posted By: the-commish @ 11/06/2008 10:22:49 PM

WRONG! Being "saved" involves a lot more than just believing Jesus Christ is your savior. It involves actually LIVING it. something many evangelicals know nothing about.

Well, here's another opinon on that:

Why are the white Christian conservatives always on the defensive, always accusing, always so judgemental, always sounding so pious and righteous? Such a rigid group of people! I think what drives these people to the Evangelical Christianity is fear and an intolerance for anything that conflicts with their own narrow minded set of rules. I accept their choice wholeheartedly, but I wish they wouldn't be so obsessed with loudly and rudely attacking everyone who doesn't believe the same way. Just accept that there are many, many other ways to be a good and faithful Christian. Follow your path to God your way, and leave mine alone!
