I loved this entire story! Every chapter and every word. It took me days to get through this but I must say, job well done. It was very respectful to both camps.
Thank you so much for letting us in on what happened behind the scenes.

I hate it when Newsweek lies. Gov. Palin did not refuse to go on stage with John Sununu because of his stance on abortion. He has a 100% voting record against abortion. Duh, Newsweek. What a hack rag.
40YearR: You miss the point. The point is the unprofessional performance of the media. It was truly an amazing scene, 200,000 Germans to see an American presidential candidate. What is not amazing is to see 200,000 gather for a free rock concert.
Newsweek is a part of the free press. They have the right to choose. Too bad they use their freedom and choose to be mediocre.
'jstacey': Oh, I got your point. That's why I challenged your 'source' in my post below.
As the Rockman in the Harry Nilsson '70s movie 'The Point" said: You see what you want to see. And you hear what you want to hear. Dig?
C'mon, jstacey, it was just gettin' fun goin' from third hand sources 'n' all....
"jstacey": Rock bands, beer, knackwurst, lottsa money... How many could John McCain or Bush, or whoever would have gotten so many people to even attend, waive flags, and not go beserk because yet another American told them something. I seen and been to beer festivals. This was not one of them.
Oh, and by the way, I don't buy that the MSM caused this election result.....I'm a skeptic.... And, so far, you haven't offered any more reliable or believable sources....
A 40 year republican
Mwalimu is correct. Robert Jordan is the protagonist in "For Whom the Bell Tolls." That means either the reporter accidentally typed "A Farewell To Arms" instead of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" or McCain was mistaken in his attribution. Since the article pulls the reference from Salter's book, which was presumably fact-checked, I'm led to believe this is merely an editorial typo on Newsweek's part. Still, it would be helpful if the magazine could post a clarification.
I believe that the main reference was to a ???related source,??? of certain characteristics. The point is there are some people that because of the way they live "inwardly" can never gain the respect of some outwardly. This is because they portray themselves under false pretenses, but not all are blinded by the villian hidden within; ask Edward's wife.
For the "stud" wearing the "blue hat" I will always love you, no matter if you are in a good mood, bad mood, or just having a bad day, no matter what you are wearing, not wearing :), how much you weigh, or what size catergory you fit in, you will always be a hero to me.~
Palin is a loser and a thief, good bye and don't come back. We are sick of your hypocrisy and whining about being attacked--that is called karma fool and you earned yours
Lets see. The MSM prints her email address. The son a democrat hacks in and publishers her email and the email addresses of her family. Her pregnant daughter gets trash emails.
The democrats knew what to do.."destroy her".. the Obama campaign started it, but knew they could turn the task over to the liberal thugs and creeps in the MSM.
When I don't have a rough draft of my research paper on the feminist role Zora Neale Hurston played in the testosterone-laden Harlem Renessaince tomorrow, I will blame you, Newsweek. I just spent several hours pouring over your insider coverage. It is riveting! Hope you'll hire the English Lit grade one class shy of a degree. :D

Great reporting, but seriously, halfway through I was laughing every time I read the word "bridled" again. Did your thesauri go missing?
I checked the internet, just to be sure, since I read Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls when I was a high school junior about 46 years ago. I was right. Robert Jordan is the hero of "For Whom the Bell Tolls"
NOT "A Farewell to Arms", as this article states. Robert Jordan was fighting the Spanish Civil War along side leftists, socialists, Communists and anarchists, who among other things wanted to re-distribute Spain's glaringly inequitable wealth. Their enemy was Francisco Franco, a Fascist, who want the rich to keep their wealth. After World War II, we aided Franco's Fascist regime because it was anti-communist and because Spain let us have some air bases. In those days, human rights and democracy took a back seat to fighting Communism.
Is it asking too much to expect leaders to at least know something about the books on their reading list? Or am I merely being a left-coast elitist if I insist on some degree of intelligence from those who want to rule our country? In any rate, this little tidbit is another of many reasons that I am glad Obama won.
The truth of the matter is that one received preferential treatment at the expense of the other???s unfairly adversarial false accusations; in any event, under those circumstances there would have never been an opportunity to ???have evened the uneven cries of Americans.???
I am just glad that it is over. People who go through life misusing their level of power, advantages, and associations that they have to benefit their selfish needs and to hurt others, there will be a reckoning day for those people. Whether it be by fate, God, or whatever, they will surely reap a harvest of the same fields of evil wrongdoing that they have planted, it is an unfailing law, they can count on it.~
It's refreshing to see flaws in men both painted as untouchable by their own campaigns and dirty immoral bastards by the other. I only wish this sort of thing had been available before the election; it might have evened the uneven cries of Americans everywhere as they attempted to drown each other out with things that were not even that important. Obama is not perfect and McCain is not vile, nor is it the other way around. They are both dedicated men who gave it their all, and that's all that needs to be said.
A tell-tale sign of insecurity is a passive-aggressive demeaning remark that hides the real self. Let???s be clear about things shall we? I am not one who is in to corrupt behaviors. Such as stealing, lying, hacking, gossiping of one's personal business, revenge, and so on and so forth. I think that the reader can get the idea here. Having said that let me also say that a person with integrity cannot coexist with someone of little or no integrity. The say opposites attract, but in many cases, the same alike are drawn together for the obvious reasons mentioned above; people hell-bent on having corruptive behaviors do not mix well with someone of integrity; it is like trying to make oil and water mix.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
At the end of everything
Is the beginning of something new
You set the stage and opened the door
So in the future be careful what you ask for
A look inside didn???t make me afraid
It was the belief that corruptive behavior made you unscathed
He will come in integrity wearing all blue
I thank God that "he" is not you
It would take a miracle to make amends
So the time is here for the end
So this is goodbye to a once called friend
I confess to being unable to stop reading until the end, even knowing the ending. Although I've been an Obama supporter from the start and I would have voted for whomever the democrats nominated, back in 2000 I remember thinking that if I had to have a republican, I could live with McCain.
I still believe him to be a good man, if somewhat uneven, but frankly, with more character than either Bill Clinton, both Bushes, or Palin.
McCain has little to be ashamed of, much to be proud of, and I believe will work hard in the Senate to help us get out of so many of the messes we are in. In five years we will look back at this moment and note it as the start of his final chapter. It will be a chapter worth reading, and when it's done, we will owe him our gratitude.
As for Obama, the real work begins, for all Americans.
I find it absolutely chilling that Palin would refuse to stand on the same stage with other republican politicians (both of whom were in tight races in New Hampshire) in simply because they were pro-choice. After a very angry call from campaign headquarters, she finally assented at the next event, but refused to acknowledge them verbally. One could look at this as a principled stand or as a the behavior of a person unable to countenance the idea that in politics (and dare I say in life) one is allowed to have differing opinions and that differences, even within one's own party, can be healthy. If Sarah Palin becomes the standard bearer of the Republican Party, as some argue she should, the "big tent" that many had described as the model for the party will cleary become the small drink umbrella that it really is. On the other post-election new information re: Palin's shopping spree, it does not surprise me a bit that the outrageous $150,000 number is in all likely low, and that even after Palin claimed to be going back to her favorite consignment shop in Wasilla, she was still receiving tailored designer clothing one week later. Why is that we are no longer shocked by the high degree of hypocrisy coming from the most holier-than-thou figures in American public and religious life over the last 20 years? I applaud the journalists who have the gumption to stand up to powerful figures and let us know what is really going on, particulary when they are demonized by such people as Palin (who of course have the most to lose by having the truth be known). And I hope a true and public accounting of the Republican National Committee books regarding this whole affair will allow the American people to judge whose values they want to support going forward. Without a truly free press, there is no free society. The American press must remain free of intimidation by those in power, those who would bully anyone who disagrees with them, calling them "un-American", or some such rot, when reporters dare to speak truth. If a politician or leader disagrees with something that is written about them, they are quite free to call a press conference or write an opposing article. This is a sign of healthy discourse and a healthy
democracy.
for themselves whose values they want to support going forward.
Do you find it absolutely chilling that John Sununu has a 100% pro-life record, and this story is therefore untrue? As for bullying by anyone who disagrees with them, do you find this chilling as well?: http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/09/wgnam_again_target_of_obama_ca.html
From the tone of your comment and the labels you placed on some of the politicians and others that you referenced I find it scary that you recommend and believe "This is a sign of healthy discourse and a healthy democracy." What a contradiction, do you even know the meaning of a healthy discourse?
And did you take your non-double standard medication today? Sorry, I just could not believe that you posted such a contradiction with the intent to give advice to others under the same premises.
Writing is wonderful. Behind-the-scene conversations are enticing. Fact-checking appears shaky, which is a big no-no, especially when rumors are also included in the same piece. Actual news has all been reported before. Hopefully, Obama will run the country as well as he ran his campaign. Glad it's not McCain's unsteady hand about to guide our nation!
Okay, Twister, first of all, the article did not state the local sources worked for the Obama campaign. It didn't even say that those sources were affiliated with the Democratic Party, but even if they were, they were acting independently, against the Obama campaign's wishes. Furthermore, local organizations do not work "for" particular candidates but for the party as a whole. And nobody blamed Bush for the weather in New Orleans. What we blamed him for was a lackadaisical response to the suffering of American citizens which is something we've come to expect from the G.O.P. in almost any situation.
You are obviously determined to hate and clearly don't want to be confused by facts, so nothing anyone says is going to change your mind. However, we do live in a democracy and, like it or not, the people have spoken. Oh, and by the way, I never voted for Bush, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when he first took office. The entire country rallied around him after 9/11 until his administration squandered our good will and the support of the entire world with their lies. A true patriot would support their country and give our new President a chance in this time of crisis, but some people, it seems, would rather nurse their grievances. Talk about sour grapes!
To druggie limbaugh and RockyMountainHigh;
You are obviously two people who have never served anyone except themselves. If you had gotten out and seen the world for what it is, you would realize that a socialist ideology is directly opposite of the design and purpose of a republic. Don't forget, a republic is what the United States is. At the end of comrade obama's first four years, you're going to have to eat your change, because that's all you'll have left. I hope you enjoy it. Bon Appetite!

Nice insight and honesty.
There isn't any change to be had right now, because the current administration has spent it all searching for terrorists in a country that harbors none, while they deregulated banking and big oil so that our natural resources and savings could be pillaged. Also, I imagine your name is spelled Beauregarde - from the French. But, not having anything more than a first grade education, you would not know that.
RockyMountainHigh and alienufo:
Here's a direct quote from the article: "The Obama campaign ultimately refused to provide any walking-around money, though as Politico reported, SOME WAS PROVIDED BY LOCAL SOURCES".
So, those that worked FOR Obama, bought votes for their candidate, and isn't the candidate ultimately responsible for everything that happens in his campaign? Come on now!, THAT'S what every liberal alive today has said about Pres. Bush: if it happened during Bush's term, it's Bush's fault, even including little things, like THE WEATHER IN NEW ORLEANS! Let me guess....NOW you'll say that walkin-around money paid by local Dems wasn't Obama's responsibility? How convenient.
Immorality and sleaze are like water; you pour it on the floor at different locations but it always seeks the path of least resistance and joins together at the lowest spot of ground.
Obama and the policies he pushes may very well afflict this nation to the point it cannot be repaired.
I think you mean that Bush, his policies and his supporters have afflicted this nation to the point where President-elect Obama and his vast league of educated intelligentsia will have their work cut out for them repairing the damage these irresponsible good-for-nothings have done.
point-set-match
Get a life, internet junkie.
Just more of "nowforsomethingotherthanthetruth's" personal invective, in the continuing absence of either any "truth", nor anything else cogent to say.....folks...
Oh wise one, I missed your point, or did your comment have one; other then signifying an abusive slur that lacked dignity? But considering the source, would one consider anything less?
And to John McCain:
Although I supported Obama this article really seals why you are hands down my favorite republican senator. You truely are a maverick who had a crappy set of people working around you. I sincerely hope you a long and happy life. I admit that I have said some pretty nasty things about you during the course of this campaign because I was so disillusioned with your tactics, but it wasnt you at all! Yay, I can like you again!
Much love John McCain, much love.
Be careful what you say, "the power of life and death is the tongue.
