Barf. What a rear end kissing piece, apropos for Newsweek.

    • Posted By: nowforsomerealtruth @ 11/09/2008 11:44:47 PM

I agree, rear end kissing is right, makes me sick. Thanks to the wisdom of Check your facts and oldgeezer; what they pointed out and said was worth reading!

      922cmarsh - Careful. . . Your bitterness is showing!

Thank you to the writer who, for the closing sentence of this excellent series, chose the word, "Americans," rather than, "Democrats," or, "Obama supporters," or any othe description of the crowd in Grant Park. He captured the moment brilliantly with one word.

Can you imagine that people's personal choice in choosing who they wanted to vote for caused such a division. I lost a lot of respect for a lot of people who were down right rude regarding who I wanted to vote for; as if I didn't have the right to my own personal choice. This nation is divided because of those that do not regard unity and peace.

Excellent article. Thank you. And, after looking at other blogs, it's a pleasure and relief to see the generally rational and reasonable tone in the postings here.

    • Posted By: nowforsomerealtruth @ 11/09/2008 3:22:29 PM

If I remember correctly you were noted to post comments on other politcal articles and was the center of all the negativity of what you are saying others did. I guess that you didn't think people notice, think again.

      • Posted By: 40YearR @ 11/09/2008 5:40:43 PM

        "nowforsomethingotherthanthetruth":

As others who read the posts will confirm, the negativity you felt was the rejection of and debunking of your relentless repasting of lies and smear propaganda.

Oh, and that you would post things directed at others like: "You're permanently on PMS and a discredit to your profession." The person you spewed that at is a physician, and the person who posted the most thoughtful, positive and reasoned comments I saw in the entire period leading to the election, which you tried to dominate with your refuted propaganda which the electorate rejected.

        • Posted By: nowforsomerealtruth @ 11/09/2008 11:33:21 PM

It seems that status of a profession means more to you than the content of what was discussed in the comment, get over yourself! The comment I posted was to the person, what their profession is does not make any difference to me. I would have posted the same comment to anyone of any profession.

  • Posted By: Newsweek is Dumb @ 11/09/2008 11:22:36 PM

Yeah, what a great piece of "reporting". If Sarah Palin is too dumb to be vice president, maybe she could apply for a job as an editor at Newsweek. John Sununu has a 100% pro-life record according to NARAL. Jeb Bradley wasn't running for Senate (you'd think the mention of Sununu, the guy really running for Senate, would have clued you in; unless you thought both senators run in the same year in NH). And you mean to tell me that Sarah Palin wouldn't go onstage with Bradley because he opposed drilling in ANWAR, when that was McCain's position as well? I'm glad I read elsewhere about this stupidity so I didn't have to waste my time reading the rest of this article where the lies and bias might not be so obvious. But then I guess I could have figured that out be seeing Eleanor Clift and Evan Thomas's names in the byline.

  • Posted By: Check Your Facts! @ 11/09/2008 8:44:33 PM

Jeb Bradley is identified as "a New Hampshire congressman running for the Senate." He is an ex-Congressman, who was running to win back the seat he lost in 2006. Seems like a pretty big error for a reporter to make, considering the reporter was covering an election event at which Mr. Bradley appeared...

Comment: Thank you Newsweek for this outstanding and enlightening series. I purchased a copy of thye issue, but also appreciated being able to read it online.

Thank You Newseek for this very interesting series. I bought several copies (for myself and a friend) and plan to subscribe as a result, but especially enjoyed being able to read online.

Presidential election is as much an election of political party as the election of an indiidual. Just see how many Clinton brains are now around Obama.

IF McCan had won, the same Bush no-brains would have surrounded McCain. Bush's 8 long grueling years would have extended another four.

I just wonder HOW this election could have been so competitive?

After screwing up the country, the world and the earth, the Republicans actually remained competitive in this election for the Whitehouse? I just can NOT in my sane mind understand this. Are there so many dumb blind brain-dead peoplein this country?

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 11/09/2008 1:09:45 PM

They were scared by the R campaign approach, because that's all the Rs had. It was sad to see that they did that. It was better to see it fail. I hope that we all appreciate what happened, that it was unprecedented and powerful.

We citizens must be alert to it, and be very vocally against it as soon as we see it, in an effort to minimize any momentum build up. A blogger showed me the way. Collect sites that debunk the whispers, and just keep posting them and circulating them to our friends. We cannot do anything about the brain-deads, but I know many thinking people who would be open to reality, and to the patriotic duty to decide based on facts.

Of course, that approach can work only when the candidate has refused to engage in it. That was a noble, patriotic and wise decision Obama made.

This quote is really telling: they were furious when they heard rumors that Todd Palin was calling around to Alaska bigwigs telling them to hold their powder until 2012.

I think the McCain camp underestimated Palin's quest for power. It was obvious from early on that Palin thought she should be at the head of the ticket. It's almost as if they opened Pandora's Box and couldn't control the monster inside.

    • Posted By: PWilly @ 11/07/2008 6:17:10 PM

Exactly. She wanted to win because she knew with McCains age it was an easy ticket into the Oval Office. I honestly couldn't find one credible thing about her and after hearing McCains speech I felt bad that had he only chosen a better and more qualified VP he might have won this election. Put Palin back in the box!

      • Posted By: Braes @ 11/07/2008 7:12:31 PM

I bet she would have asked to borrow Cheney's shotgun man. Her quest for power was breathtakingly beyond her capacity to perform. She is however, ruthless, partisan, hateful, prideful, and a poor liar.

        • Posted By: TheVigil @ 11/09/2008 10:05:16 AM

Palin's seemed quite chastened and a bit more nervous post-election. I have to kind of feel like she made her own bed by inciting some of the more negative elements of her party during the campaign, but it's still nice to see her acting a bit more "normal", so to speak.

I think she may actually learn some restraint and humility after this and come out stronger for it. I've never hated her the way many Democratic supporters do - in fact I think her record in Alaska (other than the allegations of improper firings) shows a lot of decency. If she could learn to stay on the sunnier side of things and not overpromote her own ability - if she concentrates on being a good Governor in Alaska instead of trying to jump into a position that she may not be ready for - she could be quite an asset to this country.

brilliant precis, but in my opinion could have expznded a biy on the strategic decisions and the questionable ones like the palin medical record. All in al The US has shown what a special country it is.

This article was very engaging and interesting, I loved it. But it also made me so angry at the RNC and McCain's handlers! I suppose, sadly, final blame must rest with McCain, for not having the courage and fortitude to stand up to those those Bush-Cheney jackoffs and say "No, I have more pride than to sink to these dirty levels of campaigning" or "I'm not going to change who I am for this." Where was his so called honor then? They wanted to pander and look what they got ... as if the Republican party is made up only of conservative evangelicals. If I were a Republican, I'd be insulted that my party leaders thought so little of me. Think of how closer the race would have been if McCain had gone with Lieberman after all. But all in all, it's good what happened - if the man was too weak to stand up to his aides and advisors when he knew they were wrong in just his campaign, think what that would mean for a McCain White House.

    Luckily we never have to.

Obama just said that he's spoken to all former presidents that are ALIVE
Can you possibly imagine the reaction if Sara Pallin had said that???

    • Posted By: Braes @ 11/07/2008 7:07:18 PM

It is called consulting the grey beards. If you had ever run anything other than the gaping wound under your nose, youd realize how wise that actually is.
If I were elected to an office I sure would want to have the advice and assistance of similarly situated and experienced persons. It's not about ego, it's about smart. Americans have needed smart for the last 8 years. Stuck on stupid has come with great costs.
      2 wars
      A soft-depression
      Climbing Unemployment and declining investment.
A lack of faith in government institutions.
      A staggering public debt.
A bumbling inept moron with 70+ days to finish his deregulation and destruction.

      • Posted By: puppetobama @ 11/07/2008 9:11:04 PM

        Oh my God....That's the point.!!!!!!!!!
You cannot talk to those presidents that are DEAD! When everybody laughed at the stupid sentence, the Great Mutt made a silly joke about Mrs. Regan. But he has already apologized to her..

        • Posted By: sykadelic_chic @ 11/09/2008 5:42:03 AM

The man was answering and repeating the question given him in the way it was given. If you've a problem with someone, blame the reporter who poorly phrased the question. Lyke, OMG!!! *rolles eyes*

    • Posted By: raddave @ 11/07/2008 4:17:20 PM

Do you expect him to say he talked with the dead ones as well?

      • Posted By: puppetobama @ 11/07/2008 9:08:02 PM

        That's the point!!!!!

But he already apologized to Mrs. Regan.

I want to congratulate all the reporters on the 7 part story. It is one of the best pieces written about thie 2008 election. As an Obama supporter from day 1, i have closely followed this campaign from Iowa to his acceptance speech on Nov 4 in Chicago. It has been great seeing both sides of the story--what was presented to the public at the time and the journalists perceptions of what was happening that could not be reported. I also appreciated the stories about the primaries and McCain campaign. And who says print journalism or the main stream press is dead!

This entire artricle was riveting from beginning to end and so beautifully written. Job well done!!

The best article in Newsweek I have ever read. My compliments to Evan Thomas and Daren Briscoe, Eleanor Clift, Katie Connolly, Peter Goldman, Daniel Stone and Nick Summers. Thank you for the tremendous work by all concerned including the editors and publishers.

The article read like a novel with me hanging on for what would happen next, even though I had kept up to date on the twists and turns of the campaign as it progressed.

    Again, Well Done!

Without going into all the details on which party was at fault for what, this article was excellently written. I think that the humor that John McCain displayed both on SNL and at the roast, made him seem more human, than when he is on the stump. But overall, I am very happy with the results of the election. Great job NewsWeek.
