HEHA is right, sort of; just because a person's IQ (Sarah Palin for instance) is lower than someone elses(B. Obama for instance) does not mean that she would be a worse leader than the "Brainy one". She would be better because what she has is common sense and a faith in America, capitilism and the people of America. BO is too steeped in his ideology of Liberalism and wealth redistribution to see that his policies are taking what G. Bush and congress messed up and making it far worse. If he is aware, then he is just evil. He is not much of a Constitutional scholar as he continues to show each day with taking over companies and appointing Czars. How is his apology tour complete with pandering speeches going over? Maybe fine in Europe and the Middle East, but here at home his popularity is starting to plummet. Hopefully America has awaken and ACORN can be subdued so that BO can join the unemployment line where 500-700 thousand Americans have gone every month since the great (unread) stimulus package was passed. Obama is a disaster and he and Liberalism will be vanished for a generation at least in 2012......Good riddance.

Let me be clear. First, why would you be looking for anything negative to say about a President that has a brain? Stupid is what stupid does/ Most of the post on here are people who lack anything positive to say which to me demonstrates your continue racists views of a black person who is intelligent and articulate in speech, You wouldn't have this much to say if that Old McCain would have won, I am sure of it. We need to promote intelligence and thinking for change in our President and in our politics, Get over your arguments they don't merit a response, I want a President that has done his homework while in school and not got into Harvard, Yale or Penn because of his father, grandfather, or based on his being white from a good family who has political connections, Bush or McCain didn't do well in school and you know about Palin she is so dumb it makes me wonder why Mccain thought he could get away with it for the election. The American people woke up and realized they were being played for fools, dummies and just plain dumb, See what happens when you let your brain run for a minute.

Wow..pot calling the kettle black? Bush received his dgree because he's a priveleged white man? And Obama didn't catch any breaks because he is a priveleged black man? Right?...that's BS I can believe in..NOT!!!

      • Posted By: HEHA @ 02/13/2009 2:56:18 PM

Sarah Palin is more intellectual tan Obama. The media was just against her.

"...brains are back. Sense and pragmatism and the idea of considering-all-the-options are back. Studying one's enemies and thinking through strategic problems are back. Cultural understanding is back."

DIdn't take long for all that to go away... In fact less that 72 hours into his presidency and he's signed an order to close Gitmo within 12 months with no plan. What happened to forward thinking and considering all the options?

I hope for our own safety that he and his team do some good study of Islamic culture so as to understand that many of them are not peace loving and in fact desire very much to destroy our nation and our way of life.

Mr. Hirsh may not be "under any illusion" regarding our new President, but I think that much of what is said in this article will turn out to be a delusion.

PPPPPPPPUUUUUUHHHLEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!! WHy is ut every liberal president is a genius and every conservative a dolt? Clinton asking the meaning of is....nuanced. Obama shutting down Gitmo....with no plan of whatto do...intellectuial...But a principled stand because leadership doesn't require opinion polls....must be slow. We are at war. Our economy is being destroyed. We don't need a speech where the president is thinking out loud. We need decisive leadership, not platitudes, not intellectual discussion to explore and reflect....

We have history that shows us what works and what our enemy will do (They decapitate their prisoners). We know that supply and demand and human nature works (read about the Plymouth realities). We don't need an experiment. Leaders speak clearly and concisely. But hey , the MSM can now attend cocktail parties and snicker at christians, conservtives, and regular folks....intellectuals.

  • Posted By: cowboy_TB @ 01/23/2009 11:56:42 PM

Puhhhhhllleeezzzzzzz!!!!!!!! Why is every liberal president touted as a genius and every conservative labeled a dolt? Is Obama nuanced, or too insecure to have a real set of principles to take a yes/no position? If you take all sides of an issue and talk all day without saying anything, you are an intellectual. Delivering a speech made you smart? Bizzarro world. Brevituy is the key to wit. If you know what you know and believe in a core set of princip[les, then it should take all day to say it, ala Ronald Reagan, George Bush. IF you want to continue to discuss the meaning of is....go ahead intellectuals...

  • Posted By: Mzalendo @ 01/22/2009 3:35:26 PM

Amen Mr Hirsh, Amen! It's so refreshing to have a US president that speaks and understands English in addition to actually using his brain for something. If Obama achieves nothing else, I hope he can instill a sense of pride and interest in intellectual pursuits. Too many people have been revelling in ignorance for too long.

"For two days now, Americans have celebrated the idea that we may have finally atoned for our nation's original sin, slavery, along with its long legacy of racism. We can rejoice in the world's accolades over the election of a multicultural African-American to the presidency after nearly eight years of cringing in shame as the Bush administration methodically curdled our Constitutional values and sullied our global reputation as a beacon of hope."

Oh my God! Is this article a joke? Not one word about the massive numbers of American Indians killed in our nation's history. Even the man who "freed the slaves" dishonest Abe slaughtered countless American Indians. Obama will be no different than Bush. More foreign intervention, more stolen taxpayer money, and more loss of civil liberties. This guy is living on some other planet if he thinks that Barack Obama will save this Republic. The same bankers who controlled the puppet Bush will pull the strings on the puppet Obama. Nothing will change. Things will continually get worse and worse until we have no freedoms, no currency, and no Constitutional Republic. Bush killed the Constitution and Obama will bury it. No change, just more of the same fascism, thanks to the very intellectual public and pragmatism. Ha! What a joke!

Sorry, i didnt want to get on a rant here, but...."

    Hey Everyone :
Did you know that Barak Obama is the first black president of the USA? Geez, i would have never known that if our friends at ABC,NBC,CBS, MSNBC, FOX, and CNN hadnt told me daily since nov 4th....and about every 15 seconds during the conronatio...err,....Inauguration.

Did u know that Martin Luther King, Jr was apparently black also.....i think he was a speaker of some reknown, but it was so long ago that almost no one who isnt black apparently remembers him or believes in anything he tried to do.....

...and did you know black people were once slaves here in America? (Unlike the millions of slaves held by the Romans, the Assyrians, the Mongols, the Turks, the Babylonians, the Zulus, the Carthaginians, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Egyptians, the Russians, the French, the Arabs, the Hindus, and countless other cultures throughout history.....) and that more people were bigoted and racist many years ago than today?

...and when did it become mandatory for any Christian preacher to call themselves Dr?
Isnt that reserved for people who actually earn degrees studying something? Dr of Divinity is an affront to people who actually get PhD's the old fashioned way....they earn them.

And What is keith olbermann going to do now that Bush isnt in the white house ? That was his whole show.....
    He's prince Snark.

America has followed the flute of fear, suspicion and lies for too long. The republican decision to appeal to animalistic and base instincts in 1980 to salvage an election of a pompous fool at the head of their circus started a wave the hasn't been quelled though it has for the time been over-ridden by the abuses inflicted on the electorate by the Machiavellian masters that hide in its corporate shadows. After 12 years of recession, unemployment, lies, crimes and financial migration from middle and poor to the rich the electorate reacted in '92 by booting out the preachers of fear and hate and division and elected whatever else was available. The attack continued through both terms and with many shady dealings and doubtful electoral shenanigans the stupid electorate once again fell to men telling the toothless masses whatever they wanted to hear. Now here we are again after 8 more years of the same leadership that wrecked the economy and transformed our government into a hated and mistrusted monster that wouldn't obey its own laws, just like in the '80's. We chose someone that offered an alternative to the mess we had gotten ourselves into by listening to hate-mongers and those that would have us fear our neighbors and friends while telling us that only THEY could be trusted to save God, Mom and Apple Pie. Expect the repubes to attack Obama his entire tour of duty and appeal to the basest instincts of our lesser angels. I would like to think that we, as a people, had learned our lesson about trusting in fear and lies from small minded parasites with hidden agendas but we haven't. The Nixons, Reagans, Roves, Cheneys and Bushes will always be there to whisper to our fears in order to control us.

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 01/07/2009 10:14:39 AM

OMG, I don't know where to start with this cluster **** of a post. FIrst, Reagan won in 1980 because Carter was a disgrace and failure as President. The economy was in shambles and our foreign policy situation was in total disarray. We were weak and disrepected the world over. Your assertion that Rep. appealed to base instincts to win that election is therefore laughable and easily refutable. Secondly we did not have 12 years of economic stagnation starting in 1980. In fact, the 1980's saw an unprecedented economic expansion that ended with the 1991-92 recession. I share your distaste of Bush. I think he has been every bit the disaster the Carter was - AND MORE! But please realize that BOTH parties use fear, hate, and division to win elections.
You're totally delusional if you think there is any major difference between the two parties. O will keep: Bush tax cuts, foregin policy, and the 'good ol' inside the Beltway mentality'. Follow the money my friend and lose your partisan blinders. Please think next time before you post such nonsense. Cheers.

The author is far too optimistic. Anti-intellectualism is alive and well. Just because it did not prevent Obama from winning the election doe not mean it has been banished forever.

    • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/10/2008 5:09:37 PM

Oh, we'll always have the yahoos.

They just won't be in power anymore.

      • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/24/2008 5:38:40 PM

I hate to break it to you clowns but I think anti-intellectualism (aka blissful ignorance) is why O won in the first place. You might to check out that zogby post-election poll...just a thought.

If brains are back why did all the stupid people elect Obama?

Brains in the White House. How refreshing. This is reason enough to reject Bush-era Republicanism. This is an astue piece, Mr. Hersh -- thank you.

That's ASTUTE genius. You might want to use spell check next time.

    Uhh. Hirsh...

How many ''brains''does it take to get you and the rest of the Obama Legacy Media stupidly gulled by one amazing con-man?

Todays New York Times focuses on the singular Martin Eisenstadt, who was the sole creator of the ''Palin Does Not Know That Africa Is A Continent'' rumour that was rapidly picked up by everyone, including,as is now obvious by looking at the Hirsh article,NEWSWEAK itself, whom we will now look forward to in issuing a retraction.
Eisenstadt set himself up as a ''senior McCain adviser''and shot ''official''looking films of himself that he put up on YOUTUBE waiting for the dumb media guppies to bite, which they quickly did. CNNs Anderson Cooper,MSNBCs Keith Olbermann,Rachel Maddow,Chris Matthews, and Mike Schuster. MOTHER JONES,NEWSWEAK,TIME,the AP, the late-shows including Letterman and Leno, were all gulled by the irreverant briliance of a man who suckered the entire American media

The New York Times Nov.12,2008:''Media Falls Victim To Palin Hoax''.

    take it away NEWSWEAK............

    • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/14/2008 5:22:25 PM

      Translation: Boo hoo hoo!

      • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/23/2008 12:51:09 PM

Bo hoo hoo? Let's see you say the same thing when Obama gets smeared. Oh wait, this is NEWSWEAK right?..never mind. You'll never see anything approaching smear...much less legitimite criticism on this liberal rag.

  • Posted By: AB1977 @ 11/14/2008 8:28:54 PM

Marinofish, you are an idiot.... Just like your boyfriend, Bush. Or should I say, "W?"
We all get it, conservative Republicans hate the black man, stop trying to validate your point. He WON, deal with it, and move on. I just never realized that so many Republicans were so Racist. That's all it is, you, being a Racist. That is a FACT.

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/23/2008 12:48:47 PM

Brilliant synopsis. You didn't address or refute any of his points and did the ol' "racist whitey" cry.

In fact, humans have limitations. Our knowledge is limited and so intellectualism will only take us to far. It i not a panacea. I have three Degrees two graduate. Experience from Science to Business and the Arts.... All domains of knowledge have boundary conditions and must be respected. Don't apply the wrong methodology, technology or technique to the inappropriate issue m

    Be humble and wise

  • Posted By: thinkotsdbox @ 12/21/2008 8:14:53 AM

Actually the original sin of Pride is quite in evidence. Arrogance goes hand in hand with intellectualism. Knowledge is not enough. There is no utopia through politics or anything else.

There needs to be humility and wisdom. not in evidence here this magazine or the Obamaians (ever notice every pronouncement of something that is a problem proceeded with a statement of the past 8 years; as if when Clinton was in office the USA was perfect? sorry I don't remember it that way either...its positively Orwellian.)

There is no objectivity or integrity and soon corruption will set in.

  • Posted By: happycalifornian @ 12/21/2008 4:21:35 AM

Note, its still 2008 and Nov 7, 2009 is about 320 days ahead. The president-elect is really not showing a lot of "change" by allowing old politics in his administration. You don't make any changes by selecting a war monger such as Hillary to be your secretary of state. Above all, if I wanted to make a change in US foreign policy, why would I hire someone who has called to OBLITERATE another country. Our country has suffered enough in world's declining opinion of USA during eight years of Bushomania.

  • Posted By: phyllis AZ @ 12/05/2008 3:42:25 PM

Thank you for the article. I never understand why in the Bush Years it has become: War of the Nerds. In the Bush administration if you???re smart, you must be a lacking in moral fiber, practical and or pragmatic skills. That???s ??????well.....just???..dumb. I want lots and lots of intelligent people working on our country problems. What scared me about Sara Palin is how the Republican base embraced her, The Average Joe (Vice) Presidential candidate. I'm an ???average Joe??? I don't want me to run this country.
