Thank you for so eloquently stating why many of us are excited to have Obama in the White House. I get so tired of hearing politicians preach to me about God and what He says is right. Religion should have nothing to do with leading our country.

Yes, brains are back, and high time. Perhaps we can do something about our education policy now, you know - "No Child Moves Ahead?"
One of the things that characterized the Kennedy administration was our committment to science and technology. We will need that committment again.
But if there is a sin connected to intellectualism, it is arrogance, followed closely by condescending and patronizing attitudes and behaviors. Just being smart is not enough.
My grandfather used to say that the more he studied, the more he realized how much he still had to learn.
One can be smart without being a smart-ass. Mr. Hirsh may wish to consider this concept the next time he chooses to point fingers, call names, and denigrate others who think differently, or even choose not to think.
If we are all Americans, and all in this together, we need to move forward, not backward. Otherwise, being intellectual won't have any more meaning than being anti-intellectual.
The Sun Belt politics represented by George W. Bush???the politics of ideological rigidity, religious zealotry and anti-intellectualism is a statement I find unilateral and therefore prejudiced. It has a ring of Sarah Palin's bravado in it. Let's just leave these attributes at Dubya's doorstep rather than tossing them like the morning headlines on collective Sun Belters porches, ok. While I endorse Obama as more intellectually balanced, I have reservations about his chief-of-staff appointment. Mr Emmanuel's dad was a member of Irgun, the terrorist Zionist group that forced the British Mandate and the ensuing Balfour Declaration. While I understand, Emmanuel Jr is not his father, I'm believe he was hired as much for his legendary political perspicacity as for the message this sends to Israel. This impact of this appointment will only increase Palestininian trepidation and suspicion. As for garnering the best adn brightest Clintonians, I have no problem. But keep them on as advisors: putting them in cabainet posts is a strategem that will tarnish Obama's "change" platform. If Obama is right-thinking, he should have a tabula rasa approach when making these imminent selections. Other than that, he should look into getting a hypo-allergenic goldendoodle for the kids.
I think it is now so good a beginning in this respect.
No comments? I would have rollex and the hotels would have given a million dollars to you by now!
I always get a kick out of Mikey Hirshy - he is always so Isikoffynewsweaky! Gee whillikers - "mainstream media"? Where did I go wrong?
That was a silly request - you are newsweak!
I think most self-identified "liberals", when criticizing "Republicans" need to differentiate between the traditional Republic party of 20+ years ago and the goons of the neo-con wing that has hi-jaacked the Republican party and made their own members to believe the word "liberal" to equate sodomists, Hollywood-types, and hippies.
There are plenty of very good Republicans in government but their end-of-days-believin' cuzins took over the media mikes and replaced it with a bully pulpit.
Sarah Palin took things to comedic heights with her belief that "creationist" views should be taught. This from someone who rarely reads (like W), and has a very shallow depth of world politics, less alone world geography.
Real Republicans are not what Hirsh here is criticizing. He is talking about the lunatics that was the Bush Administration and his crazy cohorts of Cheny, Rove, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Ashcroft, Gonzalez, "helluva-job Brownie", and all the neo-cons who pretty much assumed that their actions were directives from God.
Remember when Bush was asked if he ever got advice from his father and Bush said he gets his advice "from a Higher Authority"?
Bush & Co is our country's equivalent of Louis XIV, Henry XIII, Stalin, and Adolf Hitler, though on a lighter scale, thank the Gods! They thought they were "destined" to do God's bidding by attacking non-believers, the unpatriotic, stuffing their wealthy friends' pockets, while letting the poor (Katrina e.g.) drown literally and financially. Just look at our economy.
Human greed was the biggest factor in our current economic mess. Bush & F0x's belief that the "free market" will take care of itself, did not account for that fact that human greed, the drive for profits, self-preservation, is what greases the wheels of capitalism. It needs over-sight, we cannot let short-term corporate interests harm the long-term stability and health of the nation.
Bush is the most ironic, sad, and Shakespearean-level tragic character of all.
This is a guy who reasons that stem-cell research goes against his belief of the "sanctity of life" yet is the behind the most executions in Texas's history while he was governor, including the death of Karla Faye Tucker, whom the Pope appealed directly to Bush to spare. THE POPE. I guess even Bush in his own belief system is closer to God than the Pope even is!
Bush - whatever your belief and definition is of hell, I hope you end up there because of so many American soliders, Katrina victims, Iraqi, Afhganistan, Darfur, other civilians lives that died under your watch and made the lives of their countless families suffer as well.
You're doing a heckuva job, Shrub! Worst president in history? You betcha!
We need normal, financially conservative Republicans back, not the ones who mix financial policies with with religious ones, like the Sarah Palins who think the earth
Great post "rickchicago". Had Fox "News" running in the background. The "great discussion going forward" revolved entirely around "what will the Republican party to reach out to the Right" with especial attention to the religious right. Sssshhheeeeeeeeesh!!!!!! I used to think that republicans were smart...
A 40 year republican
The Republican party members are like badgers in a cage now. How conservative will the winners be? Will the actually end up like the real party of Lincoln again or will they simply find a new fear to exploit.
I've seen several shows recently dealing with the question of what the Republicans should do next and as near as i can tell the only plan they have is to reanimate the corpses of the Reagan supporters who have died in the past 20 years.
Mikey! Talk to me!
Especially poor little bald hirshyboy.
Why no comments to my "inflamatorry remarks"? Oh, I forgot - the old adage - you can dish it out, just can't take! Is that correct?
You sir, are an idiot. What nuances of deep thought can rationalize smoking a cigarette by mindless choice and lack of self-control that will certainly harm your body (therefore not being in charge of your own best interests), but yet pretend to have the judgement to make sweeping life-and-death and health decisions for millions of others? Undoubtedly these are the same nuances that can intentionally cause children that survive an abortion to perish, permit partial birth abortions, and yet save a tree in Utah and prevent our economy from receving the home-grown energy stimulus and independence that we really need. Yep, let's celebrate. Oh, wait - let me stop thinking first. Maybe pragmatism is misguided without a sound ideology.
Oh Please!!!
I don't even need to read this article, to get frustrated that this is coming from NewsWeek. Intellectualism may start with the individual, but is voiced by "Mainstream media", and when intellectualism becomes their first sacrifice in a trying time, I continue to lose respect, and spend less time on sites like this, and more on the "REAL" new voice of America.
I just don't know how to explain to you how confused you must be.
Great job determining the merits of an article without reading it.
According to Idiot Neo-Cons, Obama while campaigning painted himself as a Messiah who can fix everything, so what - like McCain didn't? What a stupid comment by the Neo-Cons - ALL politicians campaigning sell themselves like they can fix everything. Heck, even Palin tried selling herself as a fix-it-all person.
The only Messiah painting I saw was done by Right Wing Media types, and by all indications, they were not doing it to be complementary. At least he came up with better stuff than Joe the Plumber... walking on water... if he couldn't get the pipes fixed.
Too bad for McCain that Bush lied to the Hispanics that were hurriedly grouped up and registered as Republicans in 2000 and more so in 2004. If it were not for Bush's empty promises to the Hispanics, McCain would have done far better with this group.
What lies, what empty promises? Back in 1928, then presidential candidate Herbert Hoover proudly proclaimed he would bring prosperity to the nation by putting "two chickens in every pot." Hoover was not able to achieve his goal. It's a shame when a group of people can be lead like sheep and can't think for themselves about the issues.
It's great to see the media bias come out front and center. CNN selling Obama t-shirts, reporters and columnists gushing as if they'd found the new messiah. At least the left-wing media is being as overt as the right-wing media showing their bias. Can we ever hope to re-gain objective journalism in this country. I sure hope so, because at the end of the day the media is the worst practitioner of partisanship in America.
Come on, why do you have to be a sore loser? And you do know that advertisements for Obama t-shirts and what not are everywhere, CNN is not selling them themselves. Now, as you know, there are conservative op-ed writers in Newsweek too, but I fail to see how anyone cannot be objective between two intelligent, educated man and an old ideologue and a woman who didn't know Africa was a continent.
When CNN puts their logo on a t-shirt it doesn't matter who is selling them. The impact is the same. I didn't vote for McCain either by the way. I just happen to think that when the media falls in love with a candidate and becomes his protector and cheer-leader that they lose their objectivity, and end up skewing their reporting.
Did you read my post? When did CNN put "their logo on a t-shirt"? This is not about the media falling in love with a candidate, this is about companies marketing merchandise of the winner of the election, there are even gold coins being sold bearing Obama's image. The winner's merchandise accounts for giant sales, CNN is selling advertisement space just like everyone else.
Obviously an idealogue blinded by ideology and not reality.
Notice the " Palin in 2012" shirts?
Let's get off of the bashing of President-Elect OBAMA... Hands down, this guy was the best candidate, out of the WHOLE field of Dems and Reps... The only "media bias" is on the highly HILLBILLISH 'FAUX NEWS'... But, we do understand their views (antipathy to the title of This article) and with that said, most thinking people will discount our CUN'TREE CUZZINS over there at "FAUX NEWS"...
Speaking as a persona who rarely, expressed my political views about the candidates, I can say as a proud and patriotic American that, MR. BARACK H. OBAMA IS... LET ME REPEAT...
... IS THE PRESIDENT-ELECT... NO COMPLAINING, MOUTHING OFF OR B!T(#ING ABOUT AMERICA'S PRESIDENT...
HAIL-TO-THE-CHIEF...
and
HELL-TO-THE-GRIEF...
Note*** LAWS OF SEDITION, ARE STILL ON THE BOOKS...
"We have Freedom of Speech but WATCH what you say"...
GOD BLESS AMERICA
i tend to agree with most of what has been written in this article but in cases like the iranian issue i think we should tread more carefully.Obama is the new kid on the block with a lot of promise but we should remeber that CIA heads and FBI bosses remain the same as at now and they control intelligence. we should be cautiously realistic.
If you are mad or confused about '08 election results, you have been sleeping, especially for the past 8 years. Do the human race a favor, go back to sleep.
The Confederate states and right-wing fanatics are no doubt upset at the 2008 Presidential Election result where the majority of the citizens of this fine country elected a Democratic African-American. This is the true American Dream that our veterans fought for us to have, especially the vets who gave their lives fighting for FREEDOM for ALL of us. Now with peace and hope and honesty, our new administration has alot of repair work to do. Here's wishing the confederates and fanatics embrace this wonderful time, look beyond all boundaries, and join the American team.
Poor Barney - First Dog. He got a bum rap for biting someone. They said he was crabby and in a bad mood. Poor little dog, have some sympathy - you would be crabby and in a bad mood too if one of your owners was Dumbnuts.
The Idiot Neo-Cons have been sleeping, especially for the past 8 years. They need to do the human race a favor and go back to sleep. They whine how Obama has no governing experience. Bush had that experience which didn't mean a thing - look at the stupid and corrupt decisions he made.
