1. ANY RELIGION CAN BE HI-JACKED BY NUT JOBS. EX. TIMOTHY MCVEIGH AND JEFFREY DAHMER-BOTH DEVOUT CHRISTIANS.
2. THERE ARE PEOPLE OF THE MUSLIM FAITH IN IRAQ AND AFGHANASTAN-IN OUR BLEEPING ARMY FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOMS
3. QUESTIONING SOMEONE ELSE'S FAITH IS THE SOLE RESPONIBILITY OF GOD. IT STATES IT 1000 TIMES IN THE HOLY BIBLE. SO YOU ARE RATHER GOD OR VERY IGNORANT OF YOUR OWN CHRSITIANITY TO QUESTION OBAMA'S FAITH-AFTER HE HAS STATED HE IS A CHRISTIAN.
Excellent article. The land of the free should not discriminate between people based on there religion or there skin color.
.
Obama will never defend conservative muslims or permit them to live and practice their religion. He is a secularist.
A Secularist? OMG! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!
We're doomed! That's worse than Satan!
How can ANYONE think straight without religion? AAAaaaeeeeeiiii!
That's what we get for not electing another rebibilican!
Notice how the media keeps this OUT of the news until after the election? So very predictable and hardly surprising. The minute someone has an opinion about something, it appears Democrats accuse them of having 'issues'. Get over yourself, please. Just because everyone on the planet does not agree with YOUR politics does not necessarily mean WE are wrong.
Uh, oh... it's the big, liberal media conspiracy again... fresh from suppressing things like Obama is a muslim, who's not wearing a flag pin and Michelle Obama using a McCain voodoo doll on the night of the election.
Rebiblicans might like to march in zombie lockstep but starting a conspiracy among liberals would be like trying to herd cats. Get a life.
Since the article was ABOUT the election it should not be a surprise it came afterward, What are you using for a brain? oatmeal?
Kept what out of the news? That a majority of Muslims voted for Obama? How could they report that a majority of Muslims voted for Obama until after the Muslims had actually voted for Obama?
Some of you people just don't seem that educated, sorry. We don't necessarily want you to agree with OUR politics, we're just trying to give you some REAL perspective of the world. Who cares if he was Muslim? Don't we have freedom of religion in this country?
President Elect Obama will , I have no doubt take his oath with the Holy Bible. I beieve him when he says he is a Christian. It was not his choice as to what religion he had to study when he was a child. We do not get to choose our parents or thier teachings. When he became an adult and was able to make his own decisions he chose to be a Christian. He was baptised a Christian as were his wife and children.
You can be born into any kind of family, and religion but when you can make the choice for yourself, that is when it counts. If his step father was Islam and made him as a child go to an Islamic school or church that was not his fault. I believe this man was chosen by our Lord to bring peace to this country and maybe to some of the world. I believe he had a plan for him from when he was a child and made it so he would have a wide variaty of studies of differnt faiths for this purpose.
The vast amount of Muslims are very devout people. Thier religion is marred by the crazy ones that become terrorists but they are not all terrorists. Our religions here are no diferent. We have bad in all religions that go to extreme measures in the name of God. Look at people who kill doctors in the name of God. The last time I looked the Christian religion said Thou shall not kill. Does the ones who do things in the name of God that we do not believe in make all of us Christians bad? Of course not.
Mr Obama did not choose his name he was named after his father. We can not judge people by thier name or thier religion without knowing them first. I beleive he is a good man and he loves his family just like most of us. I beleive he wants a better world for his daughter as do the rest of us. I do not think he will care if the Muslims are upset if he takes his oath on the bible because he loves his Lord Jesus Christ. Lets give him a chance and then make our critisisms.
I AM A BLACK WOMAN I UNDERSTAND YOUR FEELING AND I THINK OBAMA PRESIDENT ELECTED DID THE RIGHT THING HE IS NOT A RACIST NO HE IS NO A MUSLIN .THERE ARE GOOD AND BAD PEOPLE EVERY WHERE HANNITY, PALIN AND RUSS THAT HATER THEY HAVE TRY TO DESTROY HIM BUT WE WERE THERE FOR HIM WHEN IT COUNTED THANK YOU . OBAMA WILL DO HIS BEST TO SERVE ALL AMERICA
Obama is a Muslim but what I don't understand is why so many people get upset with that statement just like when somebody uses his middle name Hussein and everybody gets upset. There is some level of denial amongst those who follow Obama which shows a sense of insecurity. And notice that I use the word "follow" to describe those who look to Obama as " the one " because this election showed troubling signs of a mass
cult within American society being entrenched which could only lead to a lot of friction and divisiveness. Its like watching the gay marriage protestors....they're basically a cult that have no intentions of compromise or no interest to just be allowed to live in society without having to wave their flag of sexual orientation. Its a sign of insecurity and its a psychological trait that I see in all gays and lesbians...its like they always have a chip on their shoulders...don't they realize they can do whatever the heck they want but they don't have to rub into the publics face but they do because like I said , they all carry some sort of chip on their shoulder..which is sad.
shocker that they would vote for Obama.
Yeah, gee, they should have voted for the party that openly hates them.
The party doesn't hate them. They are wary because every attack on us has been in the name of Islam.
And as if electing Obama will make a difference... remember when we elected a democrat 16 years ago and then promptly got attacked.... time after time? Having someone even as passive as Clinton didn't help, did it?
Biden's statement "I guarantee an international crisis within six months of Obama taking office" is the only thing I agreed with him on.
stop posting out of context.
???Remember I said it standing here. if you don???t remember anything else I said. Watch, we???re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy. And he???s gonna have to make some really tough ??? I don???t know what the decision???s gonna be, but I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it???s gonna happen,??? Biden continued.
I didn't post out of context. My point was that I agreed with Biden that Obama will be tested. I didn't include his "spine of steel" statement, as that is yet to be proven.
A friendly suggestion: Try using an editor like Notepad... you're probably using Word, and the Newsweek format doesn't recognize the apostrophes... that's why you're getting all the ???? marks.
He was talking in general terms about either man, who would be elected, being tested. Come on, you do know that, right?
Wrong. He was was referring to Obama. Biden's quote: "Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy."
C'mon.... you did listen to his speech, didn't you?
The real point is that the new president would be tested. It really didn't matter which man was elected, they would be tested. How long was Bush president before he was tested on 9/11?
Yes, he was, in about eight months. Prior to that, we had been attacked on a regular basis.... then it stopped, didn't it?
No attacks in over seven years.
Bush was extra lucky that he didn't get a spelling test, either early or late. Don't mail him one, now. Play fair.
Yeah well, Older, your boy Clinton got a spelling test, didn't he?
Doc, yer good, Dude.
Why should it surprise anyone that Muslims voted for Obama, the McCain campaign used the word Muslim as though it were synonymous with terrorist or a piece of dog crap. The fact even one Muslim voted for McCain is what should be surprising, about as likely some one who considered themselves a liberal voting for any Republican.
Just a clear example of the end result of divisive politics and campaigning Republicans have practiced for 40 years.
I wondered why the media didn't say more about the ignorance of the McCain supporter who called Obama and Arab-American, when the McCain campaign using footage of church pastor Wright, and when Palin said he likes, "Palin' around with terrorists..." Didn't the media think that most Americans are appalled by ignorance and racism? Did they not think that many caucasians and every minority group would find those comments divisive and racist? Didn't they think to call such antics during our nation's difficult times shear rubbish?
I think one thing that has also needs to change a bit, is the way the media reports about America. The days of the nuclear white families as the only influencial electorate in our country is a thing of the past......America's vanilla now has caramel and dark chocolate swirls in it, and so too must it's media coverage. God Bless the American Sundae!
The only "media" that refered to that was, sadly, Saturday Night Live". Actually, it was pretty funny when THEY did it. That poor, ignorant woman probably didn't even realize they were making fun of her; or that McCain was dissing her in front of the nation. That was probably his finest hour of the campaign.
I believe Muslim's are good people. Religious faith should not be used as a bias and neither should a small segment of fundamentalists cause us to brand all followers of that faith as jihadists. Also a lot of anger in Arab and Muslim countries around the world has been fuelled by blatant American rashness towards them. 9/11 is not a justification for our country not to treat them with respect and dignity. Even in the case of Iran - I think that with agreed supervision, they should be allowed to develop nuclear technology if it is for peaceful means. After all, we have 6000 nuclear warheads and don't have a problem with that. Nor do we chide Israel for their nuclear capability. So why should Iran or any other country be deprived of that privilege? The truth of the matter is that all countries will eventually learn the technology themselves. Do we think that 50 years from now there will still be only 9 or 10 nuclear capable countries? I don't think so.
Our nation is a melting pot of all cultures AND religion. President-elect Obama is a Christian and worships in a church of United Church of Christ. Vice-president Joe Biden is Roman Catholic and worships in a Cathiloic church. Many people have seen churches and synagogues , but I bet many Americans have yet to see a mosque, or a temple where Arab-Americans and many Asian-Americans worship respectively.
Barack Obama is ashamed to be associated with Muslims. In fact, it wouldn't be a stretch to they disgust him (as they should rightly disgust any sane human being who respects any religion). And these hijab-wearing American-"Islamists" (they're really a disgrace to the word Muslim, as associated with the practice of a very simple religion called Islam) are really just as confused as their butt-hugging-jeans-and-burka image makes them out to be... they really can't decide at any point in time if its best to be hugged by ripped pants or tents of every "earthly" hue, all elaborate decorated in gold thread... so it's no wonder they voted for Obama. Confused ideologies will always pander to whoever is the latest fad. You can always trust the American Muslim to vote with their ass.
Good comment, glam. Glad to see you set the libtards off.
Notice how they wouldn't condemn the towel_heads for their beliefs, but would condemn you for yours. The disease of political-correctness and moral relativism is alive & well...
So, you enjoy this sensationalism. Don't think you sound like a very nice person. What ever happened to civility?
Moral absolutism, actually, is the problem as far as I can see - people assuming they have the blanket right to judge others.
This is the most IGNORANT, STUPID and HATEFUL comment I ever read. Get a Life.
What a Stupid, Ignorant and hateful thing you are!!! Get a life.
To paraphrase Forest Gump: "Stupid is, stupid says, stupid does.???
To paraphrase Forest Gump: "Stupid is, stupid says, stupid does.
Muslims are simply another group of immigrants working their way into our society. The Irish and Italian Catholics had a similar hard time working their way into our society. Everybody enjoyed calling the irish "Micks" and the Italians, "Dagos". The protestants constantly referred to Priests cohabiting with Nuns and Nuns flushing fetuses down the toilet. It just seems to be a rite of passage, as when inductees into fraternities are abused in the rough hazing ceremonies. Our Muslim citizens no more approved the tower bombings than upstanding Italians approved of Mafia killings on the streets. But, established and unthinking citizens then painted all Italians with the same brush as unthinking citizens today try to paint all Muslim citizens with a terrorist brush. It is one of the defects of our imperfect society that will probably never change. What will change, though, is the object of such derision in a few years or so when the Muslims have established a secure place here and some new group will enjoy the next wave of derision. It's still a damned good place for newcomers to settle and take their turn in the barrel, so to speak. Welcome to America, islam. We'll get to know you.
Thank you. Most people don't know that 100 years ago the Irish were the most feared and hated people. Did we not put those horrible Japanese in detention camps? New is sometimes scary. I believe some people need to put down someone. It makes them feel superior.
Your comments concerning the bigotry experienced by immigrant groups are accurate. However, with regard to Islam and the Muslim experience in America the truth is far more complex. Unfortunately, our (U.S) news media continues to do this country a grave disservice when it comes to any coverage of Islam and Muslims, by exclusively presenting those of us from Asia and the Middle East as the face of Islam, not the entire portrait. The fact is that many of the Africans, who arrived on this nation???s shores as slaves, were Muslims. This is documented in many sources including a book written by Edward Wilmot Blyden titled Christianity, Islam and the Negro Race first written in 1833. So the statement that Muslims are a ???new??? group of immigrants (I would argue that those of us who are not Cherokee, Apache, Seminole, Navaho or any one of the many Native American groups, are also immigrants) is simply not true. Another fact is that while many of us come from Asia, Africa or the Middle East, most of us are African-American and we come in all races and ethnicities (Islam is not a race or ethnicity, but a religion that places no restrictions on ethnicity or skin color its worshippers). I also find it interesting that our news sources devote endless resources on stories of Muslims and terrorism and yet; not one of them has taken any time to cover the stories of us who have and continue to serve in this nation???s Armed Forces (I am retired Navy). Also, while reading many of the postings on this thread and listening to talk radio, it appears that one of the greatest tragedies which has occurred over the past eight years is that we as a nation, have collectively jettisoned logic and reason in discussions on religion, race and many other issues in favor of the type of odious commentary presented by those who participate in this group. Perhaps, the election of Senator Obama will help to facilitate this transformation as well.
Sounds like you would enjoy wearing a burka! Have a husband that treats you like dirt. Could kill you - 'honor killing"! You would really enjoy that. Oh, and I forgot - mutilation of the female gentilia, so they won't have sex with any other man> You and your muslim friends are quite scary. Where are you from "visitor"?
ariziowa
You maybe should ask shovelbum who has been talking to EXTREMISTS via internet for SEVEN YEARS.
True, he scares me more than any muslim could.
I personally know several Muslims that have never performed an "honor killing" or any of that genetalia mutilation.
I've talked to a lot that denounce it though.
I can't believe how many racist people there are in this country. So what if he is Muslim(which he isn't) ? Isn't the USA suppose to be a melting pot? There are extremists who give Muslims a bad name , but most of them are wonderful people. There are so many stereotypes out there. Not all Southerners are stupid, not all Catholic Priest are molesters. We need to be a little more open minded if we want to move ahead as a country.
Yes, I believe that our country was founded, partly, on the freedom to worship as we pleased.
Racist? That wouldn't be racist. Race means color, not religious preference. Yes, there are nice muslims, but, they still all have the same beliefs. They are a group of people who were raised to dislike Jews and Christians. This is in the Quran. They also teach their young boys in many Arab countries to fight Jihad. What group of people are causing the most problems in the world today and in the past, you know and I know what group that would be.
Not all Muslims have the same beliefs. Muslims range from ultra-liberal to ultra-conservative. Muslims, like Christians and Jews, have different interpretations of their holy book. I have a good friend whose father was a Koranic scholar. He taught his children to respect everyone regardless of their religion. He was imprisoned for protecting Hindus during the war that brought independence to Bangladesh. As for who caused the most problems in the recent past, I would say the Germans and Japanese. Go out and meet some Muslims. You'll find that most of them are decent people. You are judging more than a billion people by the behavior of a minority. You may not be a racist, but you are a bigot.
JC has it right. Just like to add that the Quran actually promotes tolerance of Jews and Christians. It seems to me with what I've learned recently about Muslim history that the Muslims, at least initially, were more willing to tolerate Jews and Christians then the other way around. I'm curious, why do you call yourself shovelbum? You're not an archaeologist are you?
A lot of Jews and Christians are raised to hate Muslims, like you? You should look at it from their perspective.
Would they look at it from my perspective?
I doubt it...
Can you tell us all where in the Quran we can find this passage that talks about hatred for Jews and Christians? Some of us can have our eyes opened if we could see this for ourselves.
But if you'll recall the inquisitions, crusades etc. Not to mention WWI and WWII...You will see that so called Christians have caused their own fair share of problems throughout history.
Don't we have freedom of religion in this country? We shouldn't vote for someone because of religious beliefs, we should vote for them because of their character.

Your example drives to the point that racism is all about fear. Unless you are related to the girl that carved the B on her face to divide a nation.
Thanks to McCain/Palin's negative campaign, conservative "Whisper Internet" and other ilk such as Hannity/FOX News, many conservcatives believed Obama was Arab/Muslim, and even a terrorist. Of course none of this is true. In the meantime Muslim Americans were feeling this bigotry not unlike the days of Japanese Internment Camps. As Colin Powel said, the question s isn't whether Obama is Muslim, but what if he was? Since Obama has been subjected to racism and such bigotry in general, it makes sense that Muslims would vote for him. After all the negative, devisive garbage that has come from the Republicans, why would any minority, including women, vote for McCain/Palin or any Republican ticket? The GOP/conservatives knows they must change their ways. I wonder if they really can--We can start with Hannity and see how he does. Rush Limbaugh--no hope.

Why is it always the coffee pot calling the tea kettle black? If you can tell me Rev Wright NEVER was a victim of racism while he served in the Marines and again when he served in the Navy then you can call him a racist.
If you can tell me that black churches were not created because blacks were not ALLOWED to pray next to white people then you can call him racist. If you can tell me black Chistians were not hung and/or castrated then you can call him racist. The man has lived through the darkest times in America, and you want to play arm chair quaterback and tell people what's what. If Rev Wright only said what was said in the youtube clip and ended the sermon, that would be bad as a pastor. However he did not, he continued to say "for turning its back on its citizens." The sad thing is that Trinity church's member are mostly black but they ALLOW different cultures to join. If they don't, it is because they are uncomfortable with the community topics and/or makeup of its members. As I have read its member are not exclusively black but they do address concerns in their community which is mostly black I presume. If we compare that to churchs today that have to vote to allow blacks to attend, it is clear which church is racist. http://www.djournal.com/pages/archive.asp?ID=226460.
When a person doesn't like who they are in ANY culture, they will start to self destruct and in the process affect the people around him causing a chain reaction. I just think the black churches have always been a way to stop the negative seed from taking root. When a group is proud of themselves, the community benefits. If the community benefits, then the city benefits and so on. As far as I have seen, Muslims DO NOT have their kids baptized in a Christian church, not matter what theory you can surmise. Here is how Trinity Church describes their history.
"God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation."
