We either save our own automakers or we give up. Let the Republican idealogy prevail ( except for Wall Street of course) and let the middle class finally fail. That has been the goal of Republicans ever since the days of the Robber Barons. As you make everyone too poor to fight, you make the rich stronger. Force the middle class into poverty and you get obedience and order. Give them a little too much money and you get rebellion.Let the ones who have the most and know the best rule our country with their superior knowledge. It worked throughout history until an upstart nation called America broke the mold. We do not need a middle class anymore because the upper class has learned to rule with wisdom, mercy and tolerance. Why worry about history? Go broke, lose your job and your house and your dignity; but be happy the upper class will still be on your side. They will help you fail and be the first to explain your failure as a moral or class issue. America works best when the workers know their place. The middle class was a mistake and poverty and obedience are the only solution. Let the rightful rulers rule; let the sheep be sheared. Capitalism is not for the faint of heart.

I say make Honda,Toyota and Nissan either finance or purchase the U.S. big three automakers. If they buy out the companies I bet the first thing they do is can the upper management people. They may just loan the money and write it off as a loss like Mercedes did with their remaining 20% interest in Chyrsler. The Japanese companies could look at it like donating to their favorite charity and still out compete and make a profit building better cars .

Interesting idea Johnny! I bet they will also get rid of the auto workers union. OR even BETTER, melt down all the steel from the cars and parts and use it to make Honda, Toyotas, and Nissans. RECYCLE AMERICAN CARS AND PARTS TO MAKE BETTER CARS! WhoooHoooo! Awesome

When does it stop?! We, the TAX PAYERS have no more to give! As it is we are having a major problem just keeping heat in the house and food on the table! My husband makes good money, but every month it takes more and more to cover expenses that used to be easy. Why should we have to keep bailing these big companies out when all they do is give it all to the high officials and it never trickles down to us, just like the Banks. We give them money and all the folks at the top get their millions first, then maybe the employees, but they won't loan money to the tax payers who bailed them out. We are all very tired of putting money into the pockets of these companies that got into trouble from mis-managing their companies, while we go without. I think it is time to let the whole thing fall apart, maybe then prices will have to come down to a level that will free us up to actually have the money to buy something. There is a finite amount of gold in the world, and our monetary system is based on that. I believe we have hit the wall here and it is time that these greedy big companies need to suck it up and do without the constant increase on their profits. It's over guys, the well is dry...DEAL WITH IT....WE HAVE TO!!!!

      Well said.

The Wall street Culture that preached "Greed is Good" and celebrated individual profit at others expense has been on ascendant for over two decades. It spread across the globe, was led to believe that capitalism as practised in America was the fastest ,surest way to economic growth.

It was a culturethat encourage those who mastered the markets to believe they operated in an amoral realm, where old fashioned notions of right and wrong simply dont apply.Look what Happened now?...All these giant are either Bankrupt or Crawling as each day pass by...A lesson that HARD WORK ecthics to be Rich not necessary Comes Cheap but can bankrupt the Country too..

I have a really good idea. Let Wall St go to hell in a handbasket. Now when a business needs to expand let them deal with the banks instead of going public and having a few billion dollors dumped in their laps and be able to do anything they want with it, like fat ceo and upper management salaries and bonuses, but instead get just what they need to grow and EARN their money like everyone else.

I'm unemployed. The interior design business is down in the dumps. Seems no one's willing to fork out the bucks for refurbishing their nests. Instead they're just paying the note on their luxury SUVs and sighing over their marble countertops with a glass of wine chilled in their stainless steel wine vaults. Ah, poor automakers, eh. They're hard scrabbling to get their piece of parsimonious pie. Yeah, people will be laid off at an SUV plant. Truly, I'm sorry. But, c'mon, SUVs was the beginning the of problem: lack of foresight. This is the catalytic converter that the Big 3 have neglected to parse. Now the smell of federal bailout is perking them up and they want to drink deeply of its restorative power. Well, enough, I say. They've done it to themselves. It's time the auto industry goes on a diet. They use the threat of layoffs as a bargaining chip but the truth is those that are slated for removal will get no reprieve. And when they get the money it will necessitate even more retooling of its bloated human resources. So those nail biters might as well keep nibbling away at their keratinous materiel because they're jobs are in the can. The big 3's problems are about fat and gristle. The lean, mean machines that coulda, shoulda, woulda saved them were always years away from becoming reality. Now they've got to shape up. I guarantee they will not. Old habits die hard. And so, too, will the workers and the economy.

I bet if all the auto execs who were being overpaid the last eight years pooled their money together they might be able to come up with the cash themselves. Let them fall if they can't or won't. I'm sure they continued to pay themselves outrageous bonuses every year even though they were losing money. Why should these CEO's and anyone in upper management try to make a good product or turn a profit when they'll get their bonuses regardless?

    • Posted By: myvoice63 @ 11/08/2008 5:41:02 PM

That is precisely the stupid way America operates. Union workers get raises and bonuses without even earning it. Labor unions make workers lazy and complacent, because a worker can do sub-par work and still receive a raise and/or bonus. Union leaders live a VIP lifestyle from the exorbitant union dues paid from workers paychecks.

No sympathy here from me needless to say. I have a college degree and making enough to get by and an auto worker in an auto factory in Detroit who may or may not have even finished high school is making better money and probably has better health benefits than me. That's just wrong!

Capitalism needs a new culture in America,Role of the bank must be calculated risk pays dividends, surely Obama must regulate the needs to reassess how much risk each investment made by fanancial industry .In investment instrument Obama should also encompass the money men should go back doing their job.Obama definetely knows that to ask or force the industry to retreat from new but prudent, calculated risk will weaken it and narrow the horizon Capital.

How do you have better alternatives? Bail out and Bail out one after another failing sector? ....Its dangerous .the Public goes burst by this time.Do have any Ideas where does come 700 Billion bailout money come from? US Senate doesn't even have even 100 billion at hand.

  • Posted By: wh4752 @ 11/08/2008 2:50:05 PM

to jack999, it seems by your comment that you probably have a job that requires an extensive amount of education and you probably make a good paycheck. (allthough you don't seem to be able to put your thoughts into a understandable comment)
So, keep this in mind, not everyone has the mental capability to be a rocket scientist, everyone is different and so in your scenario, what happens to those who can't grasp today's technology, either they become politicans or go on wellfare?
These so called low value jobs as you call them have a place in this economy, you want to put all our apples in one basket, what happens when the high tec sector becomes saturated, there needs to be a ballance of job availability, the high tec sector will always make more money than the blue collar sector, but the blue collar people should not be dismissed, you might think lowly of them but they earn their wage in the form of physically doing things you may find beneath you.

Any taxpayer money for GM and Ford HAS to be for the development of affordable, reliable, plug-in hybrids that would be built in the U.S.

    • Posted By: Mikkel @ 11/08/2008 2:07:30 PM

Hybrids... are they really cleaner. Look at the number of items needed simply to manufacture one. Let alone the number of kilowatts that will need to be generated just to keep them charged, this on top of our already demanding electricity feeding habbits. How many of you actually turn OFF the computer and not just let is "sleep"? My point exactly, we are so infuzed with energy consumption the only thing we figure out to fix it is to consume MORE energy. Recycling is the same way, not only do we continue to produce MORE NEW paper (for example) we even spend millions even billions on the energy needed to build, operate and sustain recycling centers. Effectively this must INCREASE the number of eco-footprints rather than reduce them

American needs to be Pragmatic to Solve Problems. The main Question are the Americans really Prepared?

America must Stop protecting this Low -Value Jobs sector and stop paying the American the wrong High-Pay for Low value Jobs.

Its much economical and with great logic to get these cheaper cost Workers from Mexico,India,China etc to compete and make cheaper cars with less in America , these are Low-Value Sectors Americans are doing now.Are Americans rather lets this compnay totally Bankrupt or SHIPOUT the whole auto sector to Overseas?.With This Options, this create a economy boots to US and the State like michigan,..Just Images 2 Million of these Workers RENT trouble housing in Michigan? What type of Hype this workers can creates to jumpstart the economy or others business ike Food, clothing, etc in the area. Are American be prepare to aceepts these influx of Social change within them?

Provides them with the Employement Pass .The Government can Collects LEVY Taxes Let say minimum US500 per worker .How much does USA government made If US500 px x 2 million in a Month, with bomming surrounding for the community business. You're killing two birds with a single stone with my proposal.

Transfer and Training all American Workers from This auto-industry employees for Higher -Tech Jobs with good pay like silicon Wafer plant..etc....this is Quality worker we talking talking about higly specialist....Not Just making Car....please Dont TOYING with any bad ideas with my suggestions thats good for America..

Before Detroit???s Big Three get a dime from taxpayers, the heads of those companies should all be fired. They have failed miserably, which has been evident long before the credit meltdown or the recession. Giving them a bailout just sends good money after bad. Why give them money to keep doing what has been failing for many years?

  • Posted By: Jack999 @ 11/08/2008 11:28:39 AM

Barack Obama has to overturn this America Economy Swiftly.Around.

You've got to be kidding me. They have been closing plants and sending the jobs overseas or outsourcing to mom and pop shops that pay just above the minimum wage and now they are asking those same people to basically help bail them out? If the big thing is the global economy then let the auto companies go global in their groveling for money. Let them ask Brazil and Mexico for money since they have opened plants up there. If they "go under" doesn't that mean that those plants would close as well and all of those people would lose those fine $5.00 a day jobs?? They threaten plant closings unless they get money? They only that will change is that they will get money, the plants will still close. If Congress approves this loan then they are bigger idiots that most of us think they are. Any more bailouts, then the members of congress has to give up any money donated to them by the auto industry and give it to the "kitty" to pay for the bailout. See if they like it then!!

You have got to be kidding me!! Why don't the Automakers ask Mexico and Brazil for money since that's where they are sending the jobs!! They threaten plant closings? They have been closing plants for years and sending the jobs overseas. If the big thing is for a global economy, then let the auto companies go global in their groveling for money. No taxpayers money for them, period. They burn the middle class by closing plants and sending the jobs overseas or outsource jobs to shops that pay their people just above minimum wage and now they want those same people to basically bail them out? If our government falls for that, then they are bigger idiots that what most of us think they are.

No sympathy here. My late wife worked in the acct. dept of many dealerships over the course of 25 yrs and the unmitigated greed of upper management and ownership was truly breathtaking. Their main drive was to make sure they got their monthly bonuses and the hell with the customer and lower level employees. They deserve the grief that is being visited upon them now as well as their bosses in Detroit.

  • Posted By: jrealty @ 11/08/2008 9:15:39 AM

When I bought my first house I decided to replace a floor in a hallway. As I removed the top flooring I discovered that the wood beneath had been destroyed by termites.

Did I add more good wood to the bad wood? NO!

    I replaced

    Saving Detroit/Stimulating the Economy

It's been all over the news, putting money into Detroit for the auto industry, trying to save it and help it convert to more hybrid production. Probably preferred stock or warrants.

OK - here's the benefit for the whole economy now.

How old are the fleet vehicles in the federal government? Why not place an order to buy all new hybrids from Detroit now - and let the states buy off that contract too through GSA - even give them the money as a stimulus to do it too, letting them save local tax dollars to avoid budget cuts.

So, invest in Detroit to convert it, buy all new vehicles and give Detroit some profit, all the vehicles are green, the public's investment gets paid back, and states get stimulated too.
