Courage is to face the truth. This may be hard for you since your school curriculums most likely omitted all of the information i just provided. Feel free to check up on history and perhaps you will see that the defense you are speaking of is actually offense. Aggression is needed to justify that such a huge portion of your gdp is used by the army.

The USA doesn't compare to Rome in any manner, it is telling however to see how some of your kind would make that comparison. It reveals the hybris of some americans, and also the lack of education, because just as you said the Romans where far from admirable.
As for the precieved threat to us Europeans and the rest of the "the west", it doesn't exist to even nearly the extent you believe. Try reading other than american newspapers, just as i do not only read european ones. In essence we don't need for you to sneak around and snatch our arab immigrants, that we don't even have a problem with, and we don't need you to aggrevate the russians, or the chinese, because you are just another form dystopia and only a fool would think that a Chinese, Russian or a middle-eastern leader is less moraly sound than your president.

It's easy to assume that attitude when others are sacrificing to allow you to have it. The truth is, your freedom has been paid for by those other than you and your countryman. You can sit in judgement and you have plenty of time to do so, because you lack the courage to protect yourselves. We have provided you that luxury. Ask Poland what happens to an unprotected country. Ask Italy, what hppens to an unprotected country. Ask Austria, what happens to an unprotected country. If you think getting down on your hands and knees and welcoming the invaders benefits you, go for it!

you can have the last word. I give it to you and our protection of your country has allowed you this opportunity.

Yes, little girl - yes the Romans learned that - didn't work very well. My goodness, everyone who doesn't agree with you should just kill themselves! Perhaps, you "jlgab" - I assume your name is Jill, and you just gab - great future for our country. You really don't know anything, do you!

Of course it is okay to talk with our enemies, more so long over-due. If ignoring a people and/or a country doesn't work - which has been proved for the past 8 years - we must try something different, we need to CHANGE. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. We HAVE to learn from history before it is too late. If you have been sleeping, especially for the past 8 years. Do the human race a favor, go back to sleep.

Right or wrong we are going to have live with his choices just like we did GB. Do I believe things will come out okay, NO. These countries are going to go for what they can get without giving anything. None are going to give up the nukes or quit making them and they are going to have their hands out for money. I could be way off base but I don't think I am far off. I respect the OFFICE of the PRESIDENT, but I don't have to respect the person in it. Respect has to be earned and until he earns that t my opinion.respect I will withhold my judgement. As always just my opinion.

"Zinka": Not all of Obama's supporters are just "hopers". Many of us started out as skeptics. If you have the time, reading Obama's books are a good place to start. I read them only because of all the fabricated 'quotes' from them. The intellect and post-racism shown through. Paid more attention to his speeches after that. Him telling blacks that they must be responsible for their children was not pandering to them. Telling Europeans that they must beer their burden in Afghanistan showed integrity. He told our foes "we will defeat you". He certainly is acting like a pragmatic centrist to the eyes of this skeptical conservative. Let us be patriotic and warily, but fairly, judge what he does to help us out of the multiple jams we're all in.

Well, at least now our president won't swagger down World International Street, pull out his trusty six shooter, *** back the hammer and demand that "everbody git Democratic or I'll shoot".

    • Posted By: olderwiser @ 11/09/2008 8:55:40 PM

Lo, there is a word that is used when you pull the hammer back on a revolver that appears to be starred out, but anyway it is not profane, starts with the letter "C" and rhymes with "lock". It's what cowboys do with their pistols sometimes in the cowboy movies when they are preparing to shoot their revolvers. They c*** the hammer back.

John, This is the most informative and concise article that I've seen by Newsweek or any other agency.

    Thank you so much.

Iran is the toughest diplomatic challenge Obama faces. I would say considerable patience and restraint are necessary in dealing with this challenge, and urge Obama to resist the hawkish voices in our government in terms of initiating a conflict. (As if I really have a say, much.)

I think much of the solution to this dilemma could revolve around diplomatic relations between *Israel* and Iran, because many of the Iranian disagreements with the U.S. are based on our alliance and joint military policies.

As far as the Taliban goes, screw them. We don't need diplomacy on that front (and I say this as someone with considerable respect for diplomacy). They were directly implicated in 9/11, continue to refuse all attempts at diplomatic negotiation, and continue to call for our bloody slaughter. We need targeted Special Forces operations as well as GROUND-LEVEL diplomacy with the towns of the region, since the Taliban don't have a great deal of control over the populace. Unlike most of the collateral damage in these conflicts - innocent Iraqis and Pakistanis whose sins were geographical distance and skin color - the Taliban are directly implicit in 9/11 and continue to call for our destruction, and we have to go stop this threat before they attack us again. We just need to keep the racist elements in our country from blaming the whole Middle East as we do it.

We need to rally diplomatic opposition to Russian policy right now as determined by Putin and Medvedev by bolstering our own alliances in Europe, Japan, and South Korea, and I believe we could benefit from trying to pursue diplomacy right with China, as they are an emerging world power with an increasing receptiveness to capitalism.

Chavez is all bluster right now, so screw him too, let South America deal with him. He's not that powerful.

North Korean policy is supposedly going well under Bush's policy, amazingly, so Obama can just stay the course there.

As far as Israel/Palestine, I'm not adding any fuel to that fire.
