A call for Socialism is historically an indicator that there is a big problem brewing in the masses. (Obviously he's not really Socialistic, but if that's the take on it...) To run on the words "Change and Hope", and to win, says there IS a problem. If no problem (Buch years) then no need to embrace "Hope and Change" rhetoric

      FORGET S O C I A L I S T - OBAMA IS C O M M U N I S T

That's an excellent point. To some participating in this discussion there is only only conclusion you can draw from a desire to change. . .socialism. Kind of misses the entire spectrum of other changes that might be considered, huh?

The well-educated and well-off are offended by the the dumbing down and glorization of "joe six-pack" mentality in this country. It's the "Joe Six Packs" that vote against civil rights, gay rights, women's rights and anything to do with education, funding education, etc.. This portion of the Republican party is offensive to many in our country and I am glad people are standing up and saying "no more".

The media is such a pile of idiots it amazes me. The notion that every Republican is a right wing, gun-toting, Bible beater and that every Democrat is an altruistic, Marxist, hippie is completely outdated. The fact of the matter is that the majority of Americans lie somewhere in the middle and we don't need morons in the media coming up with terms like 'Bushenfreude' to tell us how to think. The main thrust of the election as portrayed by the media has been, "if you don't elect Obama, you're a war monger and an idiot". Sensationalism is running rampant in all forms of media... Newsweek, CNN, Time, etc, you can all rest easy knowing that you have the same reporting skills as OK! and US Weekly... nice going.

Good point. We should all go to Fox for our unbiased reporting. lol

Haha, great post. Your words are so true! Anyone who reads articles like this and puts any weight into it at all is a non-thinking pushover.

The article certainly convinced me that those in Connecticut who are wealthy voted for Obama, but really, Mr. Gross, you never even attempted to answer your own questions - what ARE rich people thinking and WHY did they vote for Obama and higher taxes?

Why pose the question if you aren't going to make any attempt to answer it?

  • Posted By: marykc50 @ 11/10/2008 4:38:27 PM

My Accountant (who is a fiscal conservative Republican), said the opposite of A Midwest Mom. Maybe you need a new tax preparer....

Figure out what socialism is before you claim that Obama will bring about socialism. You can't just call something socialism and figure it to be true. As a Canadian, you have no idea what socialism is. Come study it in Canada, an actual socialist country. The US is so, so far from socialism that it would take an actual socialist leader (not Obama, he's also far from socialist) years upon years to even get the capitalist US close to socialism. Time to put on your big-kid pants and realize that your Republican Party is slowly bleeding to death with people sick of the past 8 years of failed policy. People who voted for Democrats in this last race are not stupid, as you Republicans wish to believe, but rather smart not to want to put up with the same *** of the past 8 years.

The ultra rich like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates give all their money to private foundations not the goverment, foundations do not pay taxes, if Warren, Bill and all the other rich people believed in the government they should just die intestate and let the govemment have most of their money. They are all being Democratic until they have to put their money where their mouth is!

Those who make > $250k probably know that the top tax bracket that will be shifted from 35% to 39% is for those with AGI of >$350k. And if lower tax brackets will be cut, they will gain from that. I saw some calculations that suggest you start to experience the tax hike above $600k. Once again, I just think that people want a better economy and will do better when wages, home values and stock investments are all healthy, and not just looking at one issue of taxes. With tax cuts, things are still in the pits so isn't it good to try a little tax hike even not up to the tax levels under Clinton when the many were happy, among other things.

As Obama said (wink, wink) I will take care of the poor.

  • Posted By: JoanR @ 11/10/2008 4:15:05 PM

The obvious answer as to why anyone who has money and would like to make some more voted for Obama would be stupidity. The stock market has shown us since November 4th that they have buyers remorse

    • Posted By: markmier @ 11/10/2008 4:31:59 PM

And the 6 months prior to Nov 4, that was just a fluke, right? It doesn't count, obviously. /sarcasm

    • Posted By: TalkSoup @ 11/10/2008 4:26:28 PM

If you hadn't been paying attention, the economy was in the toilet before Obama won the election.

    • Posted By: techie22 @ 11/10/2008 4:24:58 PM

You are so right. Bush was such an excellent president and
didn't bankrupt the country with his war and didn't let the big
businesses have their way with everyone. It's all Obama's fault...

  • Posted By: fastman @ 11/10/2008 4:25:07 PM

This country is now ready for real change. We need to ask the top 1% to pay 75% of their income in taxes. That would be fair. The Big Corporations are a problem too. Why not just nationalize all of them and let the government manage them for the benefit of all of us, instead of the greedy stockholders. Don't believe all that stuff about losing jobs, the government never lays people off.

    • Posted By: copper454 @ 11/10/2008 4:30:53 PM

      This wouldn't work.

If you had to pay 75% of your income in taxes to the USA, you would immediately withdraw all your investments and put your money in a more investment-friendly country.

Doctors, professionals, people with the most management experience (not just overpaid CEO's, but real quality managers too) would retire or leave the country.

Also, nationalizing industries doesn't work well. Try having a federal bureaucracy managing McDonald's. A Big Mac would cost about $8.00.

again, stop trying to bait people into agreeing with socialism. Voting for Obama was not a call for socialism. Oh wait, there have been some people calling for socialism . . . the heads of the major banks and car companies in this Country. They want to keep their profits, but make the taxpayer cover their losses. Who do you think they voted for?

  • Posted By: Timmeh @ 11/10/2008 4:28:08 PM

It's like we always knew - The Democratic party is the party of the rich. Always has been always will be. They just wanted everyone to think they were the party of the little guy. They are - the party of the little socialist guy!

This isn't' so hard. What counts is not a tax RATE. What counts is the actual $$$ you have left after paying taxes. They think about the earning environment, not the just the tax rates.
Obama proposes a marginal increase of approx 5% on income over $250k to 39.6%. So, if one made $350k, that's about $5000 less (on the $100k over the limit) in your bank than under McBush.
If you figure that the economy for you would be generally healthier under Obama, so that your income would go up only $5k more than it would in a weaker environment than McBush.
So,if you figured your income would rise 10% under McBush (to $385k gross) you would net $87.75K (35% current marginal rate on the $135k over $250).
But if you figured Obama would make it easier to gross 15% more (to $402.5k) instead, then you'd net $92.1k (60.4% on $152.5k). You're ahead $4k despite the higher tax rate.
It's big picture vs small picture. That's one reason those people make so much money in the first place.

My husband and my professional salaries together will put us into the taxable bracket. We are both Obama supporters. Why? The way I figure it, either I make the sacrifice and pay for the mess that my generation is responsible for or it falls on the shoulders of my children and grandchildren. That wouldn't be fair. We Boomers worked hard and benefited all these years. Its definately time to pay it forward. I feel this way although we never were Bush supporters, which makes us innocent bystanders more than complicit. But either way ... its our duty to pay.

If my family only has 1 car and your family has 3, can I take one of your cars? Obviously an extreme example but it is the same principal. People are missing the point of all this. It is a bigger picture than money or rich vs poor. We can't afford to create a culture that teaches us we don't have to earn what we get. We are already on that path and if we start handing out money after taking from others that is exactly what will happen. Do you honestly beleive that someone else has the "right" to what is yours?

      • Posted By: markmier @ 11/10/2008 4:29:04 PM

So when are you going to start funding your own private network of roads, your own private army, your own version of the FDA, FDIC, etc?

  • Posted By: olderwiser @ 11/10/2008 4:26:03 PM

What we had needed changing. Looks like rich people agreed. Pretty simple.

  • Posted By: Listedcat @ 11/10/2008 4:25:35 PM

Not so hard to understand, when you consider that for the last almost twenty years the GOP has run on an anti-intellectual, anti-culture, anti-university platform. The constant harping on how the East and West Coast "Elite" don't get it and insinutating that they are somehow less that "Real Americans" or even Anti-American, and at the same time trying to paint the Democrats as the party of those same "elite". If you tell someone often enough that you don't represent them and the other guy does, should you be surprised when they choose the other guy?

  • Posted By: miltongalfas @ 11/10/2008 3:19:30 PM

YOu must be kidding! The wealthy tend to come from IVY League schools that are predominately liberal Democrats. And that is why they voted for Obama. They never vote for Republicans.

    • Posted By: markmier @ 11/10/2008 4:24:47 PM

Yeah, all those commie democrats that come from Ivy league schools. People like George W Bush. Oh, wait...

  • Posted By: Tea6 @ 11/10/2008 4:23:32 PM

Not only do the rich vote more for Democrats, but they give more money to them as well. McCain was out spent by multiples.

Meanwhile, back in D.C., Republican leader John Boehner is trying to figure out how to please the wealthy and corporations even more. This as middle class incomes continue to shrink and more jobs are lost.

  • Posted By: fastman @ 11/10/2008 4:20:21 PM

It is time we took away the assets from all of theses rich people and take control of these greedy corporations and let the government manage the assets in a manner that srves all of the people equally.
