"pamonpoint" below has it exactly right. I'm affected by the tax hikes but that really didn't factor in to the decision at all (even if it had, only the amount above $250k is affected and we don't make much more than that.) Rising tide and all that.

Besides, the Republican party has been doing an amazing job of driving away the "elites". See David Brooks in the NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/10/opinion/10brooks.html

The self interest of all would say that a president who has nearly driven the country of the tracks and the party that lauded him all the way along simply can't be trusted to run the nation anymore. What is so hard to understand? The rich have more at stake in the mismanagement of the nation thus it makes perfect sense that they would pick a president of the Harvard Law Review over number 795 out of his class of 800 at the military academy. DUH!

My observation over the past several election is that the urban rich (some might say the old rich) or the wealthiest sections of the city I live in are overwhelmingly liberal democrats. They have been since I noticed this phenomenon back in the early 80's and they are still so today. What's the term - "limousine liberals"? I also don't think one election constitutes a trend since a trend, by definition must be repeated enough to establish a pattern. Like the mid-term elections following a presidention election trends to the opposition party. If that one falls then I will listen a bit more seriously.

With all due respect, did this article actually say anything or provide any real examples/data to answer the posed question?

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves, at will, money from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority votes for candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, usually followed by a dictatorship. The average ago of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through certain definite sequences. From courage by revolution to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency, from complancency to apathy, and back to dependency." Ben Franklin

Or maybe they figured out the widening gap between that top 5 percent and everyone else isn't worth it.
Getting more money in consumers who are 70 percent of the economy makes sense. It needs to be unredistributed from the top few money makers.

WHEN THE MIDDLE CLASS DO WELL SO DO THE RICH.WE ARE OUR BROTHER KEEPER,WE CAN'T LIVE IN THIS WORLD AND NOT HELP OTHERS.

Or maybe they think the pendulum has swung so far it isn't working. Either as enough income to balance the budget,,or enough trickle down to support consumers buying. 70-75 percent of the economy.

How's this for a concept: Depite the talk of tax increases, my husband and I voted for Barack Obama because we believe that he is, hands-down, the best choice for President. We are appalled by the lack of competence, integrity and intelligence demonstrated by the Bush Administration. We have watched our constituional rights degrade in a toxic atmosphere of faux patriotism based on sloganeering, name-calling, abuse of power and intolerance for dissent. We watched our country rush into a misguided, mismanaged war that has sacrificed thousands of lives and eaten up the funds we need for infrastructure, education, the justice system and a host of other matters here at home. We have suffered the embarrassment of a President who dragged his feet on admitting the human factor in global warming and who actively discouraged scientific revelations to the contrary. We are desperately concerned for the future of our country and our planet. Although we, like most Americans, have seen our savings slip away, our dollars shrink and our cost of living expand, we never considered voiting for the McCain/Palin ticket. The McCain who emerged in this campaign was no longer a man we respected for his personal sacrifice and long record of independent-thinking bipartisanship. His running mate was not even someone we could take seriously. We could not trust them with our future. Thus, there was no question about our vote. We chose the reasoned, analytical, forward-thinking Mr. Obama who is grounded in a deep understanding of our Constitution and who has demonstrated the kind of brilliance and temperament we need. In light of the innumerable weighty problems our country faces, taxes were not even part of the equation.

The rich don't mind paying more for taxes beacuse they know that they can turn around and charge the public more for their services. Amazing concept I know but you people aren't really so naive to believe that they are just going to agree to giving their money to other people... whats been stopping them for the past two hundred years?

Look at the people we are talking about here. These are the real "rich" people. They are not making $250k/yr. These people are actually rich. Very different then the line Obama drew in the sand for what determines rich. These people don't care because you can tax them as much as you want and they will always be rich. Lets take S.F. for example. If you make $250k/yr and have a wife and a couple kids with a mortgage, you may live more comfortable than most, but you are by no means rich. On top of that, you probably just worked your ass off to get to that point and now are going to be cut right back down.

There is a significant number of "wealthy " folks who are liberal socially and therefore not inclined to vote republican. Finally, it would be very hard to change the Jewish/Indian/Chinese vote to conservative, even though they are socially and fiscally conservative.
