To say that the wealthy (I don't fall in that category at $85,000) should be single issue voters with that vote based on their income is about as ridiculous to me as all of the emails I received telling me that the only issue I could consider when voting was abortion.

I think education, competence and ability to work with the world rank incredibly high and Obama was the man with the talent to do what this nation needs. It would be wrong to put personal wealth ahead of the best interests of the country. Besides, if the middle class continues to shrink, the wealtheir will end up making less money because the middle class will be able to afford less and less. In the long run, voting for Obama is a wise financial choice as well as a vote for competence.

I voted for Obama. My husband commented that he wasn't Joe the Plumber or Joe Sixpack and didn't identify with them and their image as representing the Republican party didn't appeal to him. Sarah Palin's complete incompetence didn't help either. As an educated (BS and MS) person I could never vote for a candidate who doesn't believe in evolution and would insist on creation science (no science included) being taught in the classroom. Our schools are already failing and the last thing this country needs is to destroy our science curriculum at a time when we need to compete strongly with the rest of the world. We need top scientists to develop the next generation of energy, the energy revolution that will free us of dependence on foreign oil and which would make our economy stronger.

All in all, the Republican party seemed to me like a party who would destroy the country if left in power. A party that can't seem to look ahead and be proactive rather than reactive. A party that waits until the sky is falling before taking action, unless of course that action is a preemtive war. A party that doesn't look to the consequences of it's actions. A party that appealed to the worst in people rather the best so we saw the rallies with people shouting "kill him," and "traitor." I want to live in a country that honors the Constitution and I want a president who really believes that their first and primary loyalty as president is to the Constitution of the United States. President Bush was trying to gut certain aspects of the Constitution such as illegally spying on people without warrants and detaining people indefinitely without a trial or representation. Our rights are to precious to allow them to be stolen. These rights are just as important as the right to keep and bear arms.

There were so many reasons to vote for Obama and really none to vote for McCain.

For better AND for worse, elections in our country will never be the same.
    This is the legacy of the '08 elections. Not the transition of power;
power will always be shared and guarded jealously.

The wired/wireless revolution has made a single voice an agent of change.
The "sub-atomic" voter can connect and communicate in a manner
    unprecedented just 30 years ago.

The implosion of political parties and ideologies will come and go
but, they will now truly serve the CONSCIENCE of the people
(poor AND rich) instead of the standard bearers.

It is in the interest of the rich not to have mobs of angry poor people murder them and take their stuff. They must be seen to pay their fare share of the tax burden to maintain this appearance. It was clear under Bush that the appearance of fair tax burden distribution was vanishing, so the rich did what they must to protect themselves, they elected a populist.

Based on the most recent data from the IRS (2006) the top 1% of wage earners paid 22.79% of their AGI in taxes compared to just 3.01% for the bottom 50% of wage earners. Since when is paying over 7 times higher of a percentage considered to not be a fair share. BTW I am a CPA who makes $55,000 a year so I am in neither of these categories.

I think you're (wiilfully, perhaps) ignoring education level as a factor in party affinity. (I also think you've incorrectly characterized Obama's attitude toward those making over $250K by using the word "ridicule." He often points out that he belongs to this category, as well, and states admiration for those who have achieved financial success.)

Back to education level: speaking as someone in the $250K+ income level, we generally hold intelligence in high regard. Many of us (most, probably) achieved success not through trust funds, but rather by working our way up from modest backgrounds, beginning by securing a high quality education. The GOP has become profoundly anti-intellectual, almost anti-intelligence in its public positioning. Although you've thrown the label "populist" at the Democrats, the Republicans have essentially become a religious populist party, and this isn't very appealing to well-educated people, who, coincidentally, tend to have high incomes.

The USA has been on a debt binge for years. The rest of the world is not far behind. Deleveraging debt will be a tough process impacting standards of living world wide. Enjoy the bailout. Remember, the borrower is slave to the lender.

Obama (if he actually gives the tax cut) will have to get the money to run gov't somewhere. That means he will tax businesses. The businesses will be forced to either a) layoff people or b) raise their prices. That means inflation and unemployment will quickly eat up any tax cut people receive. Learn some economics. Either way, we as a people have to pay for the government we elect. There is no free lunch

I can only wish my biggest problem in life was paying tax on 5+ grand a week.

Here is an interesting and sad fact: Every state that voted for McCain minus one (TX) is a debtor state. Meaning they take more from the Gov. then they contribute. Mississippi being the worst at somewhere near $2.40 per every $1. Ironic that they are the ones who want to "freeze gov spending" Im sick of paying for these wasters and I voted Democrate, ironic...

your assumption--that it's in the interest of the wealthy to vote for lower taxes--is a false one, forcing you to scratch your head at the apparent paradox...
...clearly you are overlooking the fact that supply side economics is dead...these wealthy folks know that their success depends on keeping the whole machine running--the government, the middle class, the dollar...
the republican attempt to drown a weakened federal government in the bathtub came close to succeeding, and they could still attempt a mad resistance to Obama's life-support, but the vast majority of Americans won't let it come to that...

Your article says nothing about "Why the wealthy voted for Obama and higher taxes." Please change the title or actually attempt to educate your reader on "why" they did. You're just stating that they did, nothing more.

Reading these posts gives me hope. I may pay more in taxes, but that's Ok. If we can restor some semblance of order again and gain back some of the respect we lost around the world, it will be well worth it.

The Repugs dug a hole for us that is so deep, that raising taxes on the wealth(ier), upping the Soc. Sec cap to 175K and getting the f_ck out of Iraq will be the first of many hard, yet needed steps for recovery.

We will be great again.................no thanks to ANY repugs, though.

The point that needs to be made is that those of us who are truly poor end up hurting from corporate taxes because or "Taxing the rich" because we end up paying the higher cost on that gallon of gas and that can of tuna fish that is passed on to us because of corporate taxes. A cost, trust me, that really crushes us. We are not lazy and unmotivated, we hold down multiple jobs and when fuel and food prices rise what can we do about it? Stop going to our jobs? Stop feeding our children? And as for the college education we hope our children can have to better their lives? Have you checked out the drop in college endowments, loans, and scholarships? All those higher taxes that you "rich" are supposedly paying under an Obama plan will not help the "less fortunate" it only restricts jobs and raises the basic cost of living on all of us who live at the basic cost of living and are trying to get a little ahead.

Your struggle to make ends meet is real but your analysis of the reason (taxes) is not. Corporations want your wages low, while they decide what price to charge you. Your work is what make them money and that is all they care about. I hope this new presidency will be a pleasant surprise for you.

Many comments from Reps keep revolving the abortion issue.

Don't they understand that it is killing them...?

Don't they get that if Palin was moderate,a kind of less liberal Hillary, the Reps might have pulled a narrow victory ?

If only she didn't bitch about abortion & didn't brandish a rifle ( I am pro -gun but...against freakish extremisms )...

    If only they got it...

    • Posted By: leepdx @ 11/11/2008 1:16:55 AM

Birth control, contraception, birth control, contraception...no abortions. So simple.

    • Posted By: Quirk22 @ 11/10/2008 7:11:42 PM

It's a nice theory but the reality is that McCain's numbers went up after he picked Palin and even after relentless media hit pieces on her he wound up with more votes than he did before his VP pick. Palin is just the pet excuse of the left and the cowardly right. Would any of you who were so aghast at Palin voted for McCain/Lieberman??? Seriously, find another excuse!

      • Posted By: r2626 @ 11/10/2008 10:21:45 PM

Who voted for him before he picked Palin?

    • Posted By: MicheleC1 @ 11/10/2008 9:39:29 PM

Maybe the ONLY reason that McCAin got votes was because of the abortion issue!! Maybe that is all they have left!! That did not kill them, that is the only thing they have LEFT!! Notice how they did not even mention it until the 11th hour when the economy tanked and it was obvious their campain was in ruins. They know that that is the ONLY thing they have that they do right!!

They don't get it, that is why they are where they are. They are out of touch...

More like white guilt. Instead of volunteering time or generously giving to charity, these numbskulls vote themselves and everyone else a tax increase, which as we know will only end up hurting the poorest amongst us, who I am sure would rather have a job than a check from El Presidente Obama. When the rich are taxed, they invest less in creating jobs. They also spend less on purchases, household items and services which employ millions of people, or used to. I hope they're happy with the suffering they cause. For those who doubt, you merely have to look at the failing of high taxes here in the 70's or check out the floundering economy of old Europe in the 90's or China before it's workers were unleashed in free enterprise.

    • Posted By: leepdx @ 11/11/2008 1:15:06 AM

What jobs? The ones sent overseas? The ones that pay $6 an hour. Get real, Reagan era economic theory is a failure!

    • Posted By: DWPitts @ 11/10/2008 9:47:12 PM

The Rich got all the tax breaks they asked for (and more) under Bush, so where are all these new jobs they created? I'm less than inspired by your argument. 1MM+ jobs lost since January and counting...

Do you need new batteries for that propeller on your beanie, lad? It's not spinning very fast.

I have gotten on these blogs and have asked this question before. Why would anyone vote for a Democrat that is willing to allow 36% of all American Abortions be afflicted on 12% of the population (blacks), his own people?
The answer must be genocide yet ask the black person and they say it is the woman's right. Over the next few Presidential election, there may not be enough blacks left to get out the vote. blackgenocide.org

    • Posted By: leepdx @ 11/11/2008 1:13:11 AM

Why would anyone who is anti-abortion deny those same women birth control?

    • Posted By: MicheleC1 @ 11/10/2008 10:30:20 PM

Good point!! Interesting, yet I voted for McCain because and only because I cannot stand his abortion stance, and if Obama was red with yellow polka dots but pro life, I would vote for him....but there is implications that if you did not vote for him you're racist!!

People don't always vote in their own self interests. Consider that over 60% of Jewish people vote Democratic. That is crazy. Virtually every Jew considers Israel's security to be at or near the top of their list, yet again and again it is only the GOP that shows a track record of assuring that security. At the same time, the Democrats have consistently been appeasing and coddling the enemies of Israel. It is beyond belief and common sense that any Jew would be a Democrat, but most of them are. And, nobody seems able to explain this mystery.

    • Posted By: Sunshine17 @ 11/11/2008 1:12:17 AM

You seem to be operating under the assumption that the security of Israel is more important to American Jews than domestic issues are. We're on the brink of a serious recession here--perhaps you haven't noticed? So forgive those of us who are concerned about Israel's security, but are even more deeply concerned about the state of American healthcare, keeping our jobs, and educating our children. A safe Israel doesn't necessarily give us any of those things, unless you're one of those people who believes all roads to global security travel through Jerusalem. Sorry, I'm not. PS: My two hundred Israeli relatives in Israel all were rooting for Obama to win. They don't need anyone in the U.S. to tell them what's best for their country. They're perfectly capable of making decisions for themselves.

It may have something to do with the Democratic party being more tolerant of others than the Republicans.

  • Posted By: bdmeis @ 11/10/2008 7:18:46 PM

Auzziebird - tell me how you feel after you get fleeced for higher taxes (which apparently you dont care about) and letting the inmates that run the asylum spend the money on stupid things - no accountabilty in government equals unnecessary spending and with Dems in control - you will get what you asked for. You are far better at using that money for charity or anything you deem appropriate. Government lacks your common sense - well at least I think so.

    • Posted By: leepdx @ 11/11/2008 1:08:56 AM

Have you lived through the last 28 years I've been through? You must be talking about the Republican party right?
