You are correct. Prostitution is not victimless, but it is the illegality of the profession that allows for the victimizattion. By making it illegal, you place sex workers outside the protection of the law. You open them up to the "protection" and abuse of pimps. People have sex for many reasons including pleasure and currying favors. Only when a woman seeks to profit from her "talents" does in become illegal. Australia, Neveda and the Netherlands seem less troubled by the "woes" you wail about. Of course, sexual slavery is horrendous but it prospers from the being illegal. Criminalization of prostitution protects as many people as does the criminalization of drug use: NONE!

    E. Spitzer may have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time or is this type of behavior just a democratic issue, I doubt it, however it seems the Republican Party would like us all to believe that it is.

Sex with women is clearly a democratic issue. Annonymous sex with men is a republican issue. (see Republican Senator Larry Craig, Republican Representative Mark Foley, Republican Representative Bob Allen, et al),
Another case of hypocratic behavior out of the repubs. Gay... bad. (Unless my R congressman wants a knobber in a men's bathroom; that's ok)
Less government (unless it is in your personal lives, then let us in to micro-manage what it is you think and do)

    • Posted By: mello1 @ 11/12/2008 6:23:10 PM

No not the republicans, they try to have strange sex in airport bathrooms ( Sen Craig) of solicit pageboys ( Foley), but God forbid prostitutes.!

some of the poster here seem to think that this discussion is about Democrats and Republicans,I thought it was about the prosecusting of Johns? what is up with the posters who think that every comment request should include a party tie?

If you insist on attacking the world's oldest profession, why not consider making it LEGAL. Regulate it with health checks, exit advice or what ever, but attepting to ban it is as smart as banning booze (we all know how well that worked). I don't know why an act between consenting adults, for which one is willing to pay and one is willing to accept payment should raise so much emotion. Fact is it doesn't, except a few well funded social butterflys with nothing better to do. I am not suggesting the "White-slavery" or "Trafficking in slaves" should not be prosecuted to the full extent of the Law, but prositiution will be with us to the end of time, as long as women are willing to make a very nice living for spending time with a man in a Natural act.. I am sure that many women have financed moves into many other professions, without complaint or Mental damage.

Make it legal, then men will have the best excuse ever for cheating, "well it is legal honey, the law says that it is ok so why don't you agree with the law."

I don't give a ***, men can have all the women that they want, that is what its all about, get as many different women for sex as you can throughout life and don't worry about the consequences or who you are cheating on, there is no man that can be trusted, period.

It is sad & alarming to read so many comments using the word " crime " for a harmless universal social phenomenon ...

Meanwhile,.NY has no death penalty since 1963 & since then hundreds of murderers have been paroled & some have been pardoned by criminal-loving governors...

  • Posted By: divinevoice @ 11/12/2008 6:29:08 PM

To common sense girl- how jaded and disempowered you have become that you and your friends "offer themselves up" to better your position without hubby knowing. It's a sad world where women's true brilliance is ignored and only their sexuality valued, and that "getting ahead" means leaving your soul behind. Women who do this block any chance of using their true gifts and will become the disrespect they accept. Common sense girl, you have become like Spitzer...

Get a life, they elected a terrorist into the the white house, and your worried about this crap. No wonder newspapers and reporters have such little respect.

Don't hate the prosecutor, hate the players of the system. That just proves, if you're white in America, in gov-ment, then you get a golden pass to avoid jail and fines altogether. Sarah Palin, as a white woman is no exception. Running for next to highest office in the land, and she initially ignored subpoenas, for herself, Toddy Doddy and staff - outright. Now take a look at a brother of color: DETROIT: Kwame Kilpatrick, the charismatic mayor of Detroit, who has been embroiled in legal problems stemming from a sex scandal since the beginning of the year, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and agreed to resign Thursday morning as part of a deal with prosecutors.

He agreed to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice and to plead no contest to a felony count of assault on a police officer; to pay restitution to the city of $1 million; to surrender his law license, forfeit his state pension to the city and be barred from elective office for five years; and to serve 120 days in the Wayne County jail, followed by five years' probation. The other charges were dismissed.

Spitzer, was a make the law, break it when I want to, kinda guy. As it doesn't apply to him, just us bottom feeders. And to not have to pay a PENNY in restitution. Now you know the white boy got friends ia a much higher place. Stay tuned, he will be running our local DOJ this time next year.

Eyesopen: don't forget he wasted 9 million of the city of Detroits tax money in the coverup up of the case and a young lady is dead. Take a look at what your "Brother" did with your tax money. In other words open your eyes, the cases are different.

You are an idiot. Mr Spitzer did something STUPID and ADMITTED to it. Your "BROTHER" Kwame Kilpatrick ,,LIED through his teeth.

    • Posted By: jayh5057 @ 11/12/2008 6:25:21 PM

You are an idiot. Mr Spitzer was thinking with the wrong head, stupid yes, BUT, he ADMITTED it.
Kwame Kilpatrick, your "dynamic "BROTHER" , LIED !!!!!!!
LIED right through his teeth. He was told NOT to leave the city, BUT, felt "Nobody gonna tell me what to do"
he, as you, are the FOOL

I would agree with you if the the moivation for lack of prosicution is wealth and power. And I do agree the justice system needs some major work

Let it go already. He paid his own money for a call girl and had sex outside of his marriage. Yes it broke the law that esentially results in a fine and embarassment when others get caught. Does anyone think that has not happened? This is his and his familys issue and it is just plane STUPID to keep bringing this up as if the guy needs to be locked up or something, He WAS charged. He DID pay a pretty hefty price. And what he did WAS betrayal. But get the hell off your high horses and recognize that the guy and his call girl buddy are the object of ridicule now. So what more do you want? Bloodletting or ritual stoning or maybe tar an feathering? I personally do not want to see or hear from either of them again, so let them fade off into the sunset. This is not a dem or rep deal. It is a stupid guy letting the wrong head make his decisions for him. I think that is pretty much a shared failing that has nothing to do with political party affiliation.

The main point here was he betrayed the people of NY. What he did he did on the Job while he was still Gov, I agree I dont want to hear from any of them but I guess everything wend down hill since OJ got away with murder everyone thinks they are above the law, anyway in my opinion he should get the book thrown at him when you are a government official you are sworn into office. He put all these mobsters away he should be put away

    • Posted By: Chazzman @ 11/12/2008 5:58:48 PM

He got up there and told us it was wrong . Prosecuted ,pimps and prostatutes for years . They went to jail !Why is he geting off with just being embarrassed ? Please don't expect me to believe that we are all created equally . Cause it sure as HELL looks like if you have money and power your a whole lot more equal than not . By the way if letting him off means he gets to keep practicing law - HELL NO !

  • Posted By: mello1 @ 11/12/2008 6:27:46 PM

Make it legal. Its not the 'oldest profession' in the world for nothing. Let the police handle more serious issues. But if you arrest one other per for the same thing he did then its a double standard.

Spitzer was in the process of outing the corruption and greed in the mortgage markets and stock markets. Those corrupt officials took him down. He was trying to help us hardworking honest taxpayers. Meanwhile the corrupt ceos raided their own company coffers here and abroad while they had the chance and then left their jobs with golden parachutes. Spitzer was a good guy. He just liked sex with women. His wife understood.
Spitzer should be put back in office. He is a fine civil servant. He could have saved this country billions of dollars. Right now taxpayers are being duped before their very eyes by this so called bail out scheme. One example...Ford, alive and well overseas making a 65 mpg car we U.S. citizens cannot even buy. Meanwhile their hand is out and receiving billions from us.

All respect has been lost for anyone in government. This is just one case of many where our law enforcement officials are not held to the same standard of accountability as the people. This proves once again that they are all in bed with each other, and the damage they have caused with this reprehensible decision is permanent. They are all arrogant parasites of the public. The people are disgusted with their own government, and this decision is exactly why. If I was this girl's Dad, there'd be another story following this one. He's a bastard, a user, a moral midget, a hypocrite, and lo and behold, a lawyer. Why does that not surprise me? Most lawyers cheated on their ethics test in law school, and the law itself says you have to prove it before they're punished. This system they'd created is completely corrupt, and they use it. If this Spitzer guy had any guts at all, he'd stand up and take his medicine like he should. He's all hot air, with no ethics to back him up. I say castrate the guy that has no guts to prosecute him while he's getting paid to do so with our tax money, and then throw Spitzer under a bus.

The U.S. Attorney could only prosecute under Federal law, the Mann Act. The Justice Department quit prosecuting individuals who were not trafficers when a Jury acquitted Charlie Chaplin when he took his Fiancee, later Wife, across a State Line. Remeber the ancient admonition, "Let he who is without stones cast the first sin."

lets start taking these crimes off the books that hurt no one but users and regulate, and tax them. then we can make sure the users are the only ones who will be victims of their folly, they will do partake either way. the war on drugs is like some eastern nation that is in a stupid 1000 year or more war. we can not win, so let us at least have some control. If anyone is going to make money on idiots let it be the taxpayers.

  • Posted By: zaksgrandma @ 11/12/2008 6:24:30 PM

until the law is changed all those who break the law must be made to pay for their crime. no one is above the law. since the da's office has not to file charges it seems that the people of that state have some work to do. emails and letters to the da's office can be a start. when it is time to vote for a new da this should be a platform for the new da.

  • Posted By: greenwich1 @ 11/12/2008 6:23:26 PM

This whole thing is so pathetic, it is impossible to understand. The idiot was the chief law officer and got caught....where is the justice!?!?! Another example of a broken system!

  • Posted By: Mr Alveezy @ 11/12/2008 6:22:23 PM

He already lost his job and has been publicly humiliated. AND? When has the law ever cared? Last I checked never unless your wallet was fat or you had the right skin complexion or connections, breaking the law is always punishable.

Oh my bad, he meets all the criteria for getting let off......... Give this man his job back!

If it had been any working class person with the type of fiduciary trust Elliot Spitzer betrayed, that person would be in jail. Elliot Spitzer betrayed his elected office in ways that are downright disgusting. His acknowledgment and sorrow is based on getting caught. Elliot Spitzer is a low life, a sneak and cheat. If he broke the law of his office and of the land he should pay for it. It is about time that people who abuse their power are held accountable. Elliot Spitzer is the poster boy for the moral decline of a society.
