I apologize. I didn't realize he used a pimp's call girl. Didn't read more closely. I knew he had used the services of a prostitute. If she's "in the business" willingly, not much you could do I guess. If it's a crime in New York, they should uphold the law. If there is no law against the ones buying the services, no I don't think they should prosecute. If the people want to change the laws, then be all means do so. I still object to how they found out he was using a prostitute by warrantless wiretapping. Even with the Congress passing more warrantless wiretapping bills meant for terrorists, it should be noted that this situation had nothing to do with terrorism. Just comes to show that our government will use unconstitutional spying on American citizens for it's own gain.

It's naive to say that someone "in the business" voluntarily just deserves what they get. No one is in the business voluntarily. They are victims of a perpetuating crime that goes unpunished because of people with your very same mentality: Abused as children, abused as adults. A child will choose to grow up to be a surgeon, a veterinarian, a cowboy, or a princess... No parent will ever hear their child utter the words "Daddy, someday I want to grow up to be a prostitute!"

    Dear Mr. or Ms. Kuffar,
You should be aware that the Attorney General of the US, Michael Garcia is a Republican. It is Michael Garcia, (the man who ensnared Eliot Spitzer ) who decided not to prosecute. The Democrats have nothing to do with Spitzer getting off the hook. Your comment is sorely misguided.

kuffar your an idiot...your "democrat" comment just goes to show how shollow of a people we have become...u break the law u pay for it!
PS...Kuffar, did BUSH break any laws....should be be punished....

Unfortunately Prostitution will never go away as long as women hold out for money for sex, even in marriages beleive it or not. Ever been to divorce court. Regardless of previous statement Mr. spitzer and his conversation being taped should be of greater concern. Mr. spitzer happened to be in Washington to try and get Bush's attention in relation to what was happening on wall street he was about o open up the can of worms that have since caused economic strife throughout America. The where never concerned , nor was his phone tapped to get evidence on the so called Ring , it was tapped because Washington was concerned, he was going to go public with the empending wall street melt down due to lousy bank practices, hence yes he was using prostitutes, WITH his own money by the way, what better way to control his exposing Washington's reluctance to curb Wall Street thievery. Well they manged to forstall the inevitable, however we are all paying now even further. At least Spitzer used his own money , Clinton was smarter he had the tax payers pay to have an intern at his disposal, oh I know he was the president, he deserves the perks!! I could go on but prostitution carries on in many forms, as a female I see it all the time as my female colleagues have offered themselves to get paid more, oh they willing admitt setting the circumstances up , but the pay off was huge, and apparently their husbands are no wiser to what they did. Everybody is happy. No one exploits women more than women themselves. I should know I am female come from a good home and I MAKE MY CHOICES like everyone else. This article is so utterly not realistic it is unbeleivable not to mention in-accurate, because in the Scandanavian countries it mentions they did ot inform nus protitutes by a license to operate to which they are taxed, that is correct. It is a business and the real reason for decline for trafficking is that the people involved in that business don't like top pay taxes hence they go to countries that don't license them. As for Spitzer I am very accurate on as there have been many articles in underground articles that have gotten the true story out. By the way they did not put bill Clinton in jail either or even really try. Apparently Newt gingrich the republican who was trying to have him empeached along with Starr, was actually getting it on with one of his paid government aides. He has since divorced his cancer ridden wife , and married the aid. So please do everyone a favour get off the high horse that it is only abused women that screw around. They do it for money or power plain and simple

The DOJ probably has better things to do thatn spend tens of thousands of taxpayer money on Spitzer's prosecution. Granted what he did is despicable but does it warrant the cost and time in court.

    • Posted By: TalkSoup @ 11/12/2008 5:46:03 PM

Why does it warrant cost of time in court if a regular Joe off teh street gets caught?

    • Posted By: icuthere @ 11/12/2008 5:10:28 PM

      That's a great idea!

Why bother prosecuting anything.....we'll save tons of money!

I agree with whoever thinks this is an absolute joke. The justice system has gotten so corrupt since the founding fathers made it. In five more years i could rape someone and let everyone know a year later and as long as i have a name in society i will get off the hook.

And for all you people who get extremely offended by other peoples opinions really need to chill. Its not that big of a deal.

I never understood why these special priviledged people have the right to use their JUDICIAL IMMUNITIES (a.k.a. money) whenever they get in trouble.

Frankly, I feel prostitution should be legalized. However, since it is NOT why is it that the Johns are not porsecuted but those working in the industry are? Legalizing it will protect the prostitutes - who are often taken advantage of from within the industry - and it will raise taxes . IN the meantime- if we are going to jail and fine hookers and madams etc - how about hitting the industry from its source - the Johns- Afterall - if there were no Johns - there would be no prostitutes. Tha having been said- Spitzer has cast shame on his name - his family and his office - he should be held responsible for that.

Welcome to the "new way of thinking". prostitution - "no big deal" -Alan Dershowitz. What is a big deal? Not murder. Not adultery. Not lying. Nothing. When did the bar drop so low that its all star anything goes?

    • Posted By: Blaine1 @ 11/12/2008 5:45:02 PM

You don't understand the difference between voluntary prostitution and murder? Seriously??

In reading most of the comments, I didn't see anyone discussing the hypocrisy of this man's actions. How long do we have to be subject to these people? Those who lead with moral authority on their side and condemn others actions with indignation; and at the same time are guilty of far worse. Elliot Spitzers true justice would be to face a prosecutor of equal moral vigor to his own. It is a disgusting comment on the people we have in power today. They can dole out the justice all day long, but when it comes to their own it's almost always a get out of jail free card. Shame on the prosecutor, and Shame on Mr. Spitzer for engaging in actions for which he was willing to condemn, prosecute and incarcerate others.

It is a disgrace. The Government is just wanting tax-payers' money when it refuses to prosecute johns. The prostitutes will continue to sell their body with or without a deterrant but by prosecuting johns that will decrease the demand for prostitution because the buyers of flesh have more to lose than a prostitute.

IF SPITZER HAD BEEN A CONSERVATIVE, THEY WOULD HAVE HUNG HIM OUT TO DRY! ENOUGH SAID!

    • Posted By: RittenhouseSq @ 11/12/2008 5:09:10 PM

Trekky, the US Attny for the SDNY who decided not to press federal charges is a Republican Bush appointee. Get over the blame the Democrats rhetoric. It simply doesn't apply. As Zoot approprriately said below, if Spitzer were a Republican, he'd be a fundamentalist Christian paying young boys to touch his man parts.

      • Posted By: simply tracy @ 11/12/2008 5:40:44 PM

Oh, right...only Republicans are gay pedophiles. You are so typical of Liberals. Make excuses for the sickos you put in office and leave them there, but if a Conservative does something, call for them to be hung. Isn't it funny how REPUBLICANS punish their own while DEMOCRATS let theirs get away with anything! What a freaking joke.

  • Posted By: NSMURALI @ 11/12/2008 5:33:51 PM

He did what humans have done for ages...SCREW AROUND! Those who are moralizing are often those who have not been caught. Not a cent of public money need be spent on prosecuting him. What is th euse to the public from punishing him? At least he did not use public funds for his pubic fantasies..Let him go...

    • Posted By: communismisgreat @ 11/12/2008 5:40:08 PM

If you feel that way, maybe then you should contribute to the legal defense of everyone who IS prosecuted for these types of crimes.

  • Posted By: Kuffar @ 11/12/2008 5:37:53 PM

Spitzer is a Democrat. In the new order under the Obama all Democrats will have a pass. In fact under the coming administration Ashley Dupre will be stoned to death in a soccer stadium for adultery simular to the 13 year old who was raped in Pakistan. Sharia rules.

Paris Hilton was sent to jail - to show that there are no exceptions to the rule. Does this only apply to women? I have an ex husband in the Army Reserves whom I was never given a restraining order against because he was "serving his country" in the military. His membership in the Army Reserves entitled him to be above the law on numerous occasions and abuse myself, our children and at least 2 women in the military - he was allowed to drive on a suspended license for 3 DUI's. The list goes on and on and on. Because he is in the military - sworn to protect the USA and it's citizens is his free ticket to abuse the laws of the USA and it's citizens. Every Judge involved with allowing this behavior to continue due to any reason whatsoever - is disgusting, disgraceful and damaging.

The lack of prosecution in the Spitzer situation is as well disgusting and disgraceful and the Prosecutor should be fired with no severance/benefits and as well prosecuted for knowingly and willfully letting an offender feel safe.

Wow - what brazen audacity - I wonder who's giving the Prosecutor the confidence to rule in such a way.

    • Posted By: WendyFriendly @ 11/12/2008 5:35:14 PM

P.S. I'm not judging - but I find it disgraceful that those who truly make every effort to do their best and occasionally fall short - receive the worst of fines/punishments. Those who blatantly do not care and break the law using their position and taxpayers $ to fund their escapades parade this attitude are patted on the back for doing so.

Hmmmm - I guess the majority of Americans are in the wrong profession - I use to hear that crime pays - apparently the political offices are reaping more of the action and receiving better benefits when they're caught.

  • Posted By: divinevoice @ 11/12/2008 5:34:26 PM

Nothing surprising here. He's got money, position and power, what else is new? I'm sure all the women will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law however. In California, we have a heinous law that if you are molested by a family member, defined as "family breadwinners", then it doesn't count as molestation, effectively protecting the men from any molestation charges. They are trying to reverse it, but thousands of children have been legally victimized in California without recourse. We finally have a brilliant African-American President, but we can't even pay the slightest respect to our women and children. There are more animal protection shelters in the US than women's rape or violence centers. Mr. Spitzer will carry double the shame for first victimizing young girls while Governor, then using his power to get off, parden the pun.

tHEY MAY HAVE BEEN CONSENTING ADULTS, BUT WHAT ABOUT VOWS AND PROMISES TO BE FAITHFUL. WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE GIRL IS NEAR HIS OWN DAUGHTERS AGE? WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT HE HAD SWORN TO UPHOLD THE LAW? THE LAW USED TO BE SACRED, NOT ANYMORE, IT IS JUST A TOOL, FOR POLITICIANS TO USE TO SCREW AROUND WITH (LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY) TO GET WHAT STROKES THEIR EGOS OR WALLET. A WISE MAN ONCE TOLD ME : JUST KEEP ON KEEPING ON, AND YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU DESERVE. (DADDY)

This is not a suspicion of a crime, but a matter of fact and the fact is that Spitser who was our governer of the people of new york state committed a crime and prosecuted those people who did just what he did. Maybe, he was just seeing what all the buzz was about, whatever the case maybe It seems like we only prosecute democrates for sex crimes. please don't forget Mr. Spitser compounded issues with the Seneca Nation of Indians which brought about the new toll hikes because he wanted to break Indian Treaties.

Here is the thing, the girl(i will not use her name to avoid giving her any more fame) that he had sex with also commited a crime by taking money for sex, yet she is making a career out of it, such as offers from playboy, as well as record company's showing intrest in her. She is not being charged with anything so why should he be. His life was ruined by eating the apple yet hers is flourishing because she offered it to him. And don't give me the excuse that she had to for money. There are many beautiful women out there who are struggling with their finances yet they choose a much more moral way to make money.
