uh.....jlaiiz speak for yourself i guess...i have no interest in prostitutes. in any event, spitzer was married and was the crack-down-on-prostitutes-sheriff which is how he managed to bring this on himself. it's not OUR fault -- it's his! NO he should not get off. And BTW what the hell is wrong with his wife -- I was incensed when she stood there next to him. For the sake of her daughters and all the women of New York she should have refused to humiliate herself. He should have been standing there alone.

Great timing huh? Now that democrats are taking over the white house, house and senate, suddenly spitzer is realeased, what? the feds afraid of democrats? Sure looks that way. Oh, no don't mess with a democrat or your days will be numbered. Let Spitzer go 'cause he's a democrat, Haha, while all republicans have to serve time for every little thing. Talk about favoritism in America. It's only going to get worst now that a black man is president, like maybe all the prisons will release all black prisoners. Obamas TRUE COLORS are already showing and he's not even in office yet.

You are an ignorant caveperson GinnyA52. Do society a favor and climb back into your dark damp hole where you came from.

        Moronic comparison and blatently rascist.

Well lets the remember the African-American who is caught with crack coccaine, and see the law turn its "eye" away from that. Yeah I made a "color" issue( I am a conservative African-American). Put a prominent Republican, a star athlete(NFL,NBA) or someone that does agree with the current politics of today; that person would be prosecuted to full extent and then some. It goes to show the bias to those who have the connections to "get" over on the mindless people who vote and enable these politicians.

Spitzer should get some jail time, I know Federal prison is not that harsh, but something. I am sure he got disbarred for his actions. Lost his wife, respect from his peers and the respect of the people of New York. At least his political career is over..we hope.

    Peace.......

Make it legal, tax it, regulate it. Safer, cleaner and better for the economy. Make it legal and cut down on crime and violence. Eliminate the need for more prisons, get people help when they need it because the stigma will be removed. Simple, sane solution that will never happen because prison and punishment is BIG business. Why not write about that?

    • Posted By: galfam6 @ 11/12/2008 5:10:15 PM

Why not legalize it? Because it exploits women and children! Where do you live? Utopia? As a woman, my heart goes out to my sisters who feel forced to sell themselves, and I am sickened by those, in any position in society, who exploit them. Read the article, Sweden gave women the chance to make a living doing something else - but prosecuting the Johns is a necessary first step.

See my comments. Most of the women CNBC talked to, the ones who are not turning $50.00 tricks, chose to be a prostitute because it pays much, much better than any other job they could find. Some of the women had Doctorate Degrees! And prostitution pays better. If it is legalized and regulated, then many of these women would not choose prostitution because "legitimate" jobs would pay better. Plus no one would be forced into it like some of the streetwalkers.

This is not the first time the public has been betrayed by government bodies. Everytime we turn around from Eliot Spitzer's hookers to Wall Street's bailouts some government body is looking out for their own best interests and telling the public ... "bend over."

Prostitution and sex industry will always exist. WE ARE HUMAN no robots. WE HAVE NEEDS like anybody else. So did SPITZER and CLINTON. Don't we enjoy raunchy and kinky sex once in a while...then
WHY THE JUDGE and pointing fingers???? NOBODY IS A SAINT HERE"
We gotta look deep inside ourselves...EUROPEANS don't have these issues...why WE AMERICANS being a POTENCY and super developed...are still dealing with society issues of the 19th CENTURY????
LET 'S ALL GROW UP A LITTLE.

Gee there's a surprise! Liberals letting Liberal get off for free. (pun intended). But seriously, that was the time to make an example, out of everybody involved. I'm stunned MSN even reported this, even though they "accidently" for got to mention his political party.

    • Posted By: simply tracy @ 11/12/2008 5:29:01 PM

Haven't you noticed? They ALWAYS forget to mention political party when it's a Democrat. Only Republicans always get theirs listed. And, funny, it's Republicans who punish their own for misbehavior while Democrats just make excuses.

While I agree that it is a hypocrisy that the DOJ does not proscecute the former Gov of NY for something that is clearly illegal for the rest of us and I agree that prostitution, as it applies to adults may even be harmful to the consenting adults who engage in it (both in the buying and selling thereof), I think just declaring it so without an alternative for those who do engage in it as a means to support themselves. For those consenting adults who chose to engage in it as a profession, I am sure if they felt they had a clear alternative path elsewhere, they would not be engaging in it, Yes?? Therefore to just state a moral concern for their welfare without a proposed solution is really idealistic. It's sort of akin to all the pro lifers trying to deny a womans right to choose but seldom offerig realistic solutions. Is adoption and crossing your legs all you can come up with? They would just assume sweep it under the carpet and have back alley abortions continue. This woman says no to prostitution but until there is a more sweeping program of alternative job opportunities and/or counseling programs to draw them elsewhere, this is where you can find them. And then there are those rare ones that perhaps enjoy it and do make big $$ at it. Hey its their life - get the heck out of it!!!

Prostitution isn't a victimless crime. If they're going to let him off the hook then the girls and pimps involved shouldn't be accountable either. If its no harm no foul then that goes for everybody involved, not just our good Mr Spitzer.

Our judicial system is bass ackwards. This is water under the bridge but they'll hold a congressional hearing over steriod use in baseball?

    WOW

It's pretty pathetic that because he resigned as Governor and they didn't find any evidence in there investigation that he used the cities money to buy these lavish women. The fbi, attorney general, or whoever. Feels that is good enough. He should also get prosecuted and charged like anyone else would if they were caught soliciting prostitution, and for the woman who he was paying $5,000 for or whatever rediculous amount it was a night for. You know the one that thinks shes a celebrity now because of this. You can thank the media for that. She should be ashmed of herself, shes a disgrace. Banging some old ugly bald guy that couldn't get a piece of tail without paying for it. Thats celeb status baby! Oh yeah! good job...

I think this decision is absolutely correct. It has been clear for more than 10 years that the only moral failures to be held up for punishment are those of non-liberals. For the progressive-liberal establishment there is no punishment, only either denial or a mea culpa that involves no criminal record and affords the perpetrater to act the part of the flawed man owning up to his or her failings by giveing up office or power an pennance, then slowly arriving back in the public spotlight to the acclimation of his or her sycophants. This is the reality for the forseeable future in this country, or at least until it becomes part of the new world order.

  • Posted By: HughIII @ 11/12/2008 5:25:16 PM

There are two reasons for letting him off the hook. One his family has suffered enough. Two he is a Democrat. The first probably has no impact on the decision but being a Democrat means he will probably be elected to a higher office.

In most cases, the "prostitute" is the victim of years of abuse and psychological conditioning. Few women choose this life. Most are tricked, bullied and otherwise forced into it.

The cruel irony is that making it illegal benefits those who make the money off these women. If this were legal, not only would there be less disease, but the men who profit from this evil would have to find other work.

These women are not criminals, and they should be interviewed and served by social service agencies to get them out of the control of the pimps and drug dealers!

  • Posted By: cresume @ 11/12/2008 5:24:18 PM

Illegality means commitan offence and you may be prosecuted. There is and always has been an entitlement to exercise discretion provided to prosecuting authorities in whether to lay charges. For my part the man has been punished enough. In Australia, prostitution in most states if not all is legal within defined strictures. One should be careful not to stereotype all prostitutes or for that matter their "Johns".

  • Posted By: DAN99 @ 11/12/2008 5:24:16 PM

You can bet that Eliot Spitzer is still getting his retirement and all the benefits that come with holding office.
The names of all the "Johns" should be made public. Names should appear all over the internet, classmates, and newspapers. Expose these pigs for what they are. I would bet most of them are not spending their own hard earned cash for a quickie. This whole business is crazy and should be stopped in an aggressive manner.

  • Posted By: dancer25 @ 11/12/2008 5:23:56 PM

Hey GinnyA52 - your an idiot. When a white man was president, did they release all the white prisoners? I swear this world is full of the stupidest, most ignorant people. Your life is probably horrible, so you go around blaming others for your problems.

  • Posted By: nembar @ 11/12/2008 5:23:27 PM

It's just another reason why prostitution should be legalized. Afterall, it's a "profession" that has been ongoing since the beginning of time and it won't go away, now or ever. Legalization would, therefore, provide for control of all sorts including disease. Additionally, the "players" would be accountable for any or all benefits as well as tax obligations. Why society continues to oppose legalized prostitution boggles the mind!
