Thank you! I was so angry when I heard he wouldn't be prosecuted. On the one hand a madame commits suicide in part because of her ordeal in the criminal "justice" system; on the other hand this wealty man goes scot free. Thanks you for pointing out this outrageous double standard.

Whether you think prostitution shoudl be illegal or not is not the question (as some think this excuses him). The fact is that he was quite aware of the law and chose to break it. He should be prosecuted as such.

Exactly!!! Thank you for clarifying. He broke the law knowingly. Period.

Thank you for saying this. I think it is disgusting that Eliot Spitzer is not being prosecuted. As a woman, it makes me feel that my country does not care about me.

Get over it you moralistic flunkey. Prostitution is the most common job for women between the ages of 15 and death. We don't have enough problems with courts overflowing with stupidly charged criminals? Lets clog up the courts more? Let's get nothing done. Marijuana is the devil's step child. One puff and you go to hell. Gay marriage leads to beasteality or Old Goat. Everything is against the law-including your being allowed to write and be published. Say, let's criminalize the Republican Party. Now that's viable.

Prostitution should be legal. End of story. The only reason it victimizes anyone is that it is illegal and therefore has no protections or safeguards.

Well, the feds sure went after the DC Madam and look what happened to her ... quite the double standard, can we say old boy's network?

My point exactly! When was the last time you heard of a male pimp being prosecuted? I can recall more than one highly publicized case of "madam" prosecution. Double standard...

Law enforcement has typically prosecuted the women involved in prostitution while turning a blind eye to the johns who buy them. Just another glaring example of sexism in America.

I agree that this is not a federal offense. It is a violation of New York law and the trust the people of that state put in this individual. So, why isn't the NY Attorney General jumping on this?

I also have to point out that "men" do not "buy and sell" women in prostitution. Sex slavery is an egregious crime, but that does not seem to be the case here.

Isn't justice supposed to blind? I bet if Mr. Spitzer was a normal citizen, he would be prosecuted. I guess we argue that he should get a break because of his position and public service, but I sure hope I can get the same break if I make a similar mistake.
The law and prostitution have had a weird relationship forever. The politicos pander to the public by attempting to clean up the streets, but the industry just won't go away. The courts and police make their own adjustment with reality.

Prostitution is not always a victimless crime, but in this case it is. Ashley became a pro to support a glamorous lifestyle and didn't have the money to pay for it. She was NOT destitute and did not need to money so badly like so many other young women. She used him and he used her. She's not a victim and therefore no prosecution is necessary because of equal protection under the law .

Spitzer's karma finally caught up with him! He needs to be treated like the common criminal he is.

I hardly think that grown-behind women who make thousands of dollars a night to give men sex is abuse of them. If it is a child whith no choice, sure. But, saying a grown-up prostitute is a victim is like saying a thief is a victim. They are both willfully breaking the law. These women buy expesive clothes, jewelry, cars and homes with their ill-gotten gains. If he is prosecuted, prosecute her, too.

It is no use bringing up a European comparison. Our national pride almost demands that we not emulate Europe in any way, even at our own peril. Good job Sweden!

US Attorney Garcia is working in the Bush DOJ, so why did Ms. Ramos invoke president-elect Obama? We have one sitting president at a time. Until the end of an error, January 20, 2009, Dubya is president, and Ms. Ramos needs to address her issues & concerns to President Bush. Of course, we all know with Dubya's countless signing statements, 2001 - 2008, he & his regime do not follow the letter of the law. They've deemed themselves above the law!

The feminist prudes who wrote this article need a major beam-ectomy. I am sure that there are women (and men) who are forced into prostitution against their will, but I am also virtually certain that none of the women whom the former Governor solicited are in that group.
Furthermore, the best way to end abuse and ensure that no person is forced into this situation is to legalize and regulate the service. This seems to work fairly well in the civilized parts of Europe, where religion is left out of the government paradigm.
Finally, it seems to me that the prosecutors made a wise decision because the method by which the evidence was obtained had nothing to do with the crime. Any reasonably competent defense attorney would argue that investigation into terrorist activity does not provide a blank check in a search for other illegal behavior. Though it has been widely abused, I believe that the 4th amendment is still in effect.

Oh, good grief................................that idiot was not forced into prostitution.
