This certainly is a double standard. This man is a hypocrite. How his wife can tolerate him is beyond my thinking.. He should be prosecuted like any other man (at least that;s what he calls himself.).

Two people freely bargaining an exchange is nobody else's business. If coercion is used by anyone, that is a crime in and of itself regardless of it's sex or going somewhere for ice cream cones. If the seller or buyer does not inform an individual of a deadly communicable disease, that ranges from battery to murder. There are laws for potential "misdeeds" than to blanket criminalize two people exchanging sex and money, buyer or seller.
And if prostitution exists in some nether region of the black market where undesirables dwell it is because a puritanical society puts it there. Where prostitution is legal black market negatives don't exist.
All societies that support inequality between various groups of humans, such as the patriarchal system, have a double standard in the legal system that perverts justice and favors the dominant group. Our fore fathers were inspired to recognize that freedom of choice is demanded by the unalienable (not subject to government suppression) rights given to humans by their Creator. To provide a check against potential hedonistic anarchy, they were also inspired to recognize that all men(humans) were created equal. This equality sets a limit on any individual's or group's actions to the point where any action causes significant harm to, and infringes on the equal rights of, any other individual or group. If the God inspired wisdom placed into our Constitution was used to support just law and law enforcement and eliminate unjust law and law enforcement, all parties involved equally in a crime would be punished to the same extent. Because the sexual behavior chosen by an individual is usually based on their personal religious beliefs and the U.S. Constitution prevents the government from establishing or favoring any particular religion with its??? set of moral doctrines, those individuals that believe sexual services outside of marriage are not immoral, and freely choose to interact sexually with another individual who has exercised the same free choice, should not be repressed by unjust law favoring a religion, group or individual that believes those sexual behaviors are immoral.
The practical political considerations often override the law. A prosecution of Spitzer would likely have pulled in a lot of other Johns who probably had political connections to the DOJ or to the administration that the DOJ reports to.

I feel for the sentiment and intent of this article. Women getting abused (in any situation) is a horrible thing but, the slant of this article was backwards. Pimping should be illegal, and pimps should go to prison for possibly even life and anyone who assalts someone or hurts them in any way should get the same punishment. But, criminalizing prostitution prevents a woman in that situation from reporting an assault against her. Also, the relationships and business deals made between two consenting adults is not anyone elses business, period! Legalize it, tax it, and give this girls (that want it) a way out.
This article references the harmful effects of prostitution on women over a dozen times. Not once does it mention the harm done to male prostitutes. I'm sure the executive directors of anti-prostitution groups are well aware that men traffick other men as well. Are male victims not harmed in a similar manner as female?
The percentage of prostitutes that are male is far from insignificant. They deserve at least a mention.
With the budget crises in this country, why not make some pragmatic changes in how we approach various activities. Legalization of solicitation and soft drugs would allow us to reduce or redirect law enforcement resources, and would also result in increased revenues from taxation.
All those men who seek illicit and perverse sex should have their penises cut off. People in high places if can not behave orderly, why should they expect others to behave.
Far better if the world's oldest profession was actually given due recognition. Legalise it, offer proper protection for women who choose to do it and start removing the social stigma that goes with it. Imagine the profits that the government would make from politicians alone.
Good one!
Technically, "Buy" was not the correct term in this case. "Rent" would be better. Really, this would depend on the level of control that the young lady had over her destiny and her ability as an adult (or not) to make that determination.
Guess Nevada has it all wrong....not! Anyone who watched the HBO series Cathouse knows that high end prostitution, just like high end pornography has many enthusiastic job seekers.. This article would have been good work for street hookers, but is complete BS for the big bucks end of the spectrum.
Keep it simple. Money, wealth, the power to buy your way out. It doesn't matter what the crime was.
Replacing a double standard favoring one gender with a different double standard favoring the opposite gender is no answer. Equal treatment for prostitutes and their johns, yes, but the Swedish model assigns no criminal responsibility to the women who profit monetarily and assigns all criminal responsibility to their customers who receive [demented] sexual gratification in exchange. Lots of thieves and other criminals have genuine hard luck stories, but that does not give them a defense for their crimes, short of meeting narrow criteria of insanity or mental defect. Even if, say, an embezzler steals from the very bank that has ensnared her in a commercially (even criminally) exploitive relationship, that does not excuse her from paying the consequences for her own misconduct.
