    Are you people nuts?????
Don't you have enough prisoners in the USA??? Especially those for relatively minor crimes that do not deserve the prison terms imposed? And don't you see that Spitzer's crime falls in the above category?
The legal system better focus on stopping the REAL human and child trafficking rings themselves worldwide rather than waste its time with the "one john at the time" concept. Especially when one of the humans was a very willing participant from New Jersey! And making quit a bit of money at that!
    GET REAL PEOPLE!!!

Wow,... well this article is so void of fact when it comes to prostitution, its laughable.

This is another example, like illegal immigration laws of how our government has it's own rules and does not follow the rule of law.

What I think is hysterical is that nowhere in this article does it say former DEMOCRAT Governor Elliot Spitzer...if he was a Republican every other word in the article would have been "former Republican Governor...." Careful Newsweek...Check your zipper...Your bias is showing!!!!

Alot of good coments on here I think we might all might need a pardon me one time or another Dem or Repub citizen or in the public eye. I think people are making too much of the whole Spitzer issue buying a woman for sex as it might be more of taking one eye off the issues of Bush and his illegal doings in the white house not to go as far as saying he's a terrorist, but spying on his own country and issues that come to mind from the top offices in the Bush era go far beyond prostitution. yet our economy is in the shitter because Republicans want to spend you tax dollars on prosecuting sex issues.

I have made a few comments but this is a question... Why do you say Former Republican or Former Democrat. First it has nothing to do with either and what did a bunch of folks get together and say they are out of the gang now. People we are all just people how hard is that to understand? There is a whole lot going on out there to worry about than why they did they not exclusively say what party he is with. I again ask DO YOU REALLY THINK SHE CARED WHO THE GUY VOTED FOR OR WHAT PARTY HE WAS FROM?

what's the big deal if two adults enter into a consensual agreement & have a little fun. I bet the writers of this story wish they had 1/10th the sex lives of these high end call girls.

  • Posted By: kay_12340 @ 11/12/2008 8:21:21 PM

We now have prostitution laws that apply to EVERYONE...... except politicians.

The article is obviously written from a feminist point of view that does not necessarily reflect the views of the less elitist thinkers. The man should be punished because it is the law and because he has an even higher standard to bear as a prosecutor of the law. The righteousness projected in the article is more of the prattle that has helped generate laws that clog the legal system and chew up tax resources to enforce a gender based elitist collection of opinions.

The bullshit data about prostitution comes from a feminist agenda. We need to decriminalize it. Go after the pimps and the corporations instead.

Even though prostitution is a now acrime, it should be legalized and taxed like in the netherlands. How many "normal people" sell their bodies for a movie, a dinner and a bottle of wine? If we have sex for free, how is that any different? Tax the prostitutes, make them get tested , stop the spread of std's and use the cash to help balance the budget. Even though we are a democracy, America still has a "Royal class" people who are above the law, and because of money or prestige, have priviledges us peons can never achieve to. We need to legitimize sex as what it is, a bodily function. I wonder how many of us would collect if we actually could make money as a whore. We may not be whores, but being a slut is free.

      ...very good points!

This article is nothing more than a reactionary response. Let's not forget why these charges were brought to light in the first place. Spitzer was thrown under the bus for attempting to expose the Bush administrations role as a "willing accomplice to the mortgage lenders who went to any lengths in their quest for profits."

In an article written by Spitzer in the Washington Post he accuses the Bush administration of "embarking on an agressive ... campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to whcih the federal government was turning a blind eye."

Slavery! What about credit card companies and late fees that keep you in a repetitive cycle of debt. What about student loan debt as a form of indentured servitude. Bush made it so that you can never get rid of it even in bankruptcy. Prostitution is nothing compared to what big companies do to the american people. When we wear that company logo, we are all prositiutes of a form.

Prohibition, the criminalization of alcohol in our country from 1920 through 1933, only served to enrich the criminal element (mainly organized crime) in this country at the expense of society as a whole. I submit that it's no different with Prostitution. Decriminalization of prostitution would allow the government to regulate the industry which would benefit everybody. Providers can be licenced, zoning restrictions can be specified, and acceptable business practices can be mandated.

As far as Spitzer's case, I think public humiliation is sufficient punishment for his crime because

    1. The vast majority of prostitution clients (high-profile or not) are never prosecuted.
    2. Spitzer (presumably) had no criminal record prior to this offense.
    3. Spitzer cooperated with authorities in the investigation.
    4. No taxpayer monies were used in the perpetration of his crime.

High-profile offenders should be subject to the same standard of prosecution as any other offender. In this case, I think that's exactly what happened. To those who say Spitzer got off "scot-free," I beg to differ. The man is ruined for life. I certainly wouldn't want to be him.

The reason I posted my opinion is because I can. Maybe these opinions and this subject matter is over your
head, but it is certainly not mine. Do you even know the person or the subject matter that is being discussed?
I just really think you would like to be cool. Maybe someday --you will.

Johns are usualy not prosecuted, he should be given the same consideration as the public, no more , no less.

These issues will not get any meaningful attention until a woman becomes president because prostitution is one of the oldest professions in the world and does not affect the male population at all. Even as a woman, I'm not really concerned, I don't think what Spitzer did was any big deal...we'd have to fire most of the politicians (both Dem and Rep) out there if we wanted to make a statement...this is so typical for the male dominated world of CEO's and politicians. Spitzer got caught, that's all, but there are hundreds more out there that are covering themselves better than he did and probably won't get caught. If someone like John Edwards can get caught with his pants down, I think it will be rare to find a politician that hasn't cheated or paid to cheat. Now, human trafficking is a different story and the issues aren't always related. I think the women that wrote this article mean well but they are putting their energy in the wrong direction. Going after Spitzer is a waste of time because he has done what men have done for 1,000's of years. Let's find ways to keep these women from falling through the cracks and ending up on the streets in the first place.

Whenever I see Spitzer in a photo he's always making a face. Is that his orgasm face?

  • Posted By: fesler @ 11/12/2008 8:12:16 PM

Why is it OK for movie and sports celebs to do it and others are punished? If you are going to punish one - punish them all not just a select few. The law is supposed to be equal.
So, if it is a crime for her, it is a crime for him and a crime for everyone not just the ones they pick and chose to go after.

So why wasn't slick willy ever charged?

    • Posted By: musicfan @ 11/12/2008 8:11:29 PM

The act itself with Monica was not illegal. However, Bill Clinton's act of lying was and he was impeached for it.

  • Posted By: constitution11 @ 11/12/2008 8:11:12 PM

Given the high position he held in the justice system. I can't believe he is not being disbarred. Just another example to the common citizen that we have forgotten the first few lines of our constitution.
