THE WORLD FROM WASHINGTON

Barack The Savior?

The new president may think his only task is to rescue the economy. But like FDR, he may have to save capitalism itself.

I guess you forgot Obama is not the outsider you think he his.
He has been friends with some of the most well connected idividuals in D.C for a long time and he has been living in D.C for
the last four years. I know you are intelligent but your emotions have blinded you from the facts.
Do you know UFO exists and that the Clintons were kept in the dark.

  • Posted By: eddiewhere @ 11/18/2008 2:42:40 AM

Obama knew all about government secret agencies and the exsistence of UFO's before he became President. There are very few people in
Government that have access to the world's knowledge. It is shared amongst an elite few and they are very
secretive. When Truman was informed that UFO's were discovered a special part of the military was asked to analyze the material that was found.
This military hired top scientists who were sworn to secrecy. Over time these technologies were adopted by
defense contractors and slowly released to the public. The people who run these entities work in conjuction
with the CIA. Only people at the top of these agencies know whats going on. Knowledge is power and "Power is knowledge"(eddiwhere 08). If the public
had access to even a fraction of this knowlege these elites have, then there would be a panic. UFO's is just the tip of the iceberg. The President represents these
elites and this is why they help protect this knowlege. It is like if someone discovered the original arc of the covenant and the original ten commandments.
For example Muhammed was not visited by GOD but rather SATAN. Muhammed confused Satan for GOD. IF he thought GOD WAS SATAN then he would not follow his
will. Think about it. The devil is very cunninPart of Evil is deception. If God had passed his message on to Humans. Would Satan not do the same. It is very difficult for
humans to think like this. Muhammed thought God was telling him to conquer the earth until everyone became a Muslim and recognized there was only one GOD ALLAH.
Satan is very powerful and very cunning. TOday we have people committing suicide in the name of ISLAM. THAT is what Satan intended to do. THis is his way of fighting
GOD. ANd he did it in a genius way. He disguised himself like GOD and used Muhammed as his conduit.
Muhammed confused Satan for GOD. IF he thought GOD WAS SATAN then he would not follow his will. Think about it.

This is why MUHAMMED was so successful because he really believed he was carrying out the will of GOd and justified murder in his name.
IF you read about Muhammed's life you will see that what I am stating is backed by facts.

IT is hard for us humans to think outside of our '"domain" because we have been indoctrinated to think a certain way until knowledge hits us.
Here is another example. If you bend space you can cross dimensions and therefore can literally step from one world to another without any time going by.

One of the pundits on the morning news panel shows made a reference to the fact that all of the bailouts are going to the top???banking institutions and corporations. All of this money will require oversight and accountability that will suck out more money. Why not just send $20K to every adult who pays taxes or qualifies for tax credits? Let us spend, save or invest the money as we chose. This is the bailout for everyone. Bankers can do what they want with their money. Car manufacturers can do what they want with their money. Workers who are laid off or put out of work because of bankruptcies, etc. will have $20K for retraining, health, etc. Congress could decide to make reinvestment of the $20K in stocks, health insurance, cars, mortgage payments fax-free. Others would pay income tax on the $20K. There would be no additional bureaucracy to direct trillions of dollars into the economy that would evaporate before ???real people??? would see any benefit.

Well, the smirking Hirsch is at it again. Of course, his thesis completely ignores a couple of important facts, such as that despite FDR's endless government programs of his first 100 days, the economy of the 1930's progressively got WORSE from 1932 to 1938. FDR's many programs were a disaster. The depression only eased when the US began to gear up for WWII, and then ended when the US joined the war.

But hey, professional liberal apologists like Hirsh have never let the facts get in their way; why start now?

    • Posted By: alienufo @ 11/16/2008 1:04:44 AM

how do you figure the economy got worse? When FDR was inaugurated unemployment was at 25%. By 1937 it was 14%, and it went up to 19% during the 1938 recession (which was caused because FDR cut spending drastically to try to balance the budge, resulting in a lot of layoffs). GDP also grew every year he was in office except for 1938. The War accelerated the recovery but the economy definitely got better under the new deal, not worse.

Jeez, Republicans on here are bitter.

Why is it so hard for some people to see past the polarized media?

"In the tank for Obama?" Only in so far as the people writing these articles have children they love.

Obama's cabinet will be legendary, and they will do things to this country that should have been done years ago. One can only hope.

Republicans bitter about losing so much ground should reflect on what got them to this position. This didn't happen overnight.

God bless America and God bless our future.

      Hey, BenCrap -

I plan on giving Obama the same level of support that George Bush got from the left upon his taking office in early 2001.

      Sound fair?

Jeez, if i remember right, Bush was bashed from the get-go and HATED by the press and dems in congress because of what happened in Florida.
I heard democrats say over and over "Bush isn't my president"

Now, for the past two years, we've had the press FAWNING over obama, refusing to challenge him on anything, worshipping at his alter while audibly fantasizing about his presidency in the press and you expect us to just smile and politely congratulate you?

      I guess

Fawning over Obama? That's an understatement. The dreamy-eyed, smilish, love-laced interview Charlie Gibson gave Obama, versus his, look down his condescending nose, scowl on his face interview with Palin was so obviously biased it was sickening. Then there's Chris "something good running down my leg" Mathews love affair with Obama.

        Blatant, to say the least.

THE REPUBLICAN AND CONSERVATIVE WAY OF THINKING IS DYING OUT AND THEY HAVE ONLY THEMSELVES TO BLAME. IT'S NOT BECAUSE THEY LOST THEIR CORE PRINCIPLES-IT'S BECAUSE THEY WERE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT THEM WITH A REPUBLICAN WHITEHOUSE AND CONGRESS AND NOW EVERYONE IS BARING WITNESS TO THEIR HORRIFIC IDEAS, UNBELIEVABLE HYPOCRISY AND INTOLERANCE. THEY LIVE IN THEIR OWN BUBBLE AND THAT'S WHY IT WILL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE THEY WIN ANY ELECTION. THE DIDN'T VET BUSH AND HE TURNED OUT TO BE THE WORST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY-NOV.4 WAS AMERICA AND THE WORLD GIVING THEM THE PROVERBIAL SINGLE FINGER SALUTE.
    PROOF-
    1. MOST REPUBLICANS THINK PALIN WON THE DEBATE AND MCCAIN WON TWO OF THREE. EVERY UNBIAS POLL SHOWED THAT MCCAIN AND PALIN GOT BLEW OUT.

    2. THEY SCREAM AYERS NAME MORE THAN OSAMA BIN LADEN(UNLESS THEY CHILDISHLY TRY TO COMPARE BARACK TO HIM BY NAME SIMILARITY-). LET'S SEE-A VIOLENT PROTESTOR OF THE VIETNAM WAR THAT BLEW UP EMPTY ROOMS VERSUS THE MAN WHO MURDERED 3000+ AMERICAN CITIZENS IN ONE MORNING, ON REPUBLICAN WATCH, STILL ALIVE 7 YEARS LATER AND TALKING CRAP ON VIDEO TAPE AND MAYBE WRITING A BLEEPING BOOK. START TO WONDER WHY BIN LADEN'S FAMILY WAS THE ONLY FAMILY ALLOWED TO LEAVE 9-11 AIRSPACE OR THE FACT THAT BUSH'S NICKNAME IN THE ARAB WORLD IS "BUSH BIN LADEN?"

    3. THEY SCREAM WRIGHT'S A RACIST BUT CANNOT RECOUNT WHAT HE SAID THAT WAS RACIST TOWARDS WHITES. SAYING SOMETHING AGAINST AMERICA IS NOT SYNONYMOUS WITH SAYING RACIAL THINGS AGAINST WHITES-BESIDES-ANY MAN WHO WOULD DROP OUT OF COLLEGE TO VOULUNTEER FOR VIETNAM AND SYRIA(SOMETHING RUSH LIMBAUGH, GEORGE BUSH, DICK CHENEY, SEAN HANNITY......ETC. NEVER CONSIDERED AND NEVER WOULD HAVE). ALSO, WENT BACK TO GET TWO MASTER DEGREES AND A DOCTORATE-HE CAN SAY WHAT HE WANTS. HE SAVED LIVES ON THE BATTLEFIELD-DID YOU?

    4. THE HORRIFIC AND LAUGHABLE THEORY OF THE TRICKLE DOWN AFFECT. A THEORY BUSH'S OWN FATHER CALLED VODOO ECONOMICS.

    5. THE FACT THEY TRY TO SAY OBAMA COULD NOT GET A SECRET SERVICE INTEL BECAUSE OF PASS ASSOCIATIONS. BUT SARAH PALIN COULD EVENTHOUGH BEING INVOLVED WITH A PARTY THAT WANTS ALASKA TO LEAVE THE UNITED STATES OR JOHN MCCAIN'S RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS
PRESENT DAY FRIEND G. GORDON LIDDY? BESIDES-OBAMA WAS PRESIDENT OF THE HARVARD LAW REVIEW-THAT'S A JOB JOHN MCCAIN AND CERTAINLY SARAH PALIN COULD NOT GET RIGHT NOW.

    6. THE REPUBLICANS CONTINUAL WAR ON SMART-JOE THE PLUMBER, SARAH PALIN AND GEORGE BUSH-ARE THE 3 MORE IGNORANT STOOGES? NON OF WHICH POSSES A BASIC GRASP OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

    7. THEY TALK ABOUT SOCIALSM-THEN THE TOP REPUBLICANS IN THE COUNTRY NATIONALIZE THE BANK. THEY SAY THEY ARE PRO MILITARY BUT OUR BOYS COME HOME TO CREDITORS ON THEIR BACKS, THEY SAY THEY ARE FOR LIMITED GOVERNMENT-YET BUSH GREW GOVERNMENT LARGER THAN ANYONE, THEY SAY THEY ARE GOOD AT DEFENDING OUR COUNTRY-YET 9-11 HAPPENS ON THEIR WATCH AND THE GUY WHO DID IT IS STILL ALIVE.

sirhe - True conservatism will never die. You yourself would probably agree with 90% of its principals.

      True conservatives believe in:

      Smaller, less invasive government
      Less taxes
Doing more with the money already coming in
Right to guns, and religion (if you prefer)
Right to life (which you may or may not agree with).

The problem is that there are very few true conservatives running for election or even in a position to be elected. You have a bit of a point that we have a dying party but that is not because conservatism itself is dying, there just are really no representatives currently in the party. Just as the true Democratic party has all but died, so has the true Republican/Conservative.

Considering the 2000 election was stolen from Al Gore by the Supreme Court and that Bush never won the popular vote, I'll let the mandate set by Obama over McCain speak for itself. And as for the previous fella, just goes to show ya that another Democrat is gonna have to spend another full term cleaning up the mess caused by Republican incompetence. Happened in 1933,'93 and is gonna happen again in 2009.

"Sedition is a term of law which refers to covert conduct, such as speech and organization, that is deemed by the legal authority as tending toward insurrection against the established order. Sedition often includes subversion of a constitution and incitement of discontent (or resistance) to lawful authority. Sedition may include any commotion, though not aimed at direct and open violence against the laws. Seditious words in writing are seditious libel. A seditionist is one who engages in or promotes the interests of sedition.

Because sedition is typically considered a subversive act, the overt acts that may be prosecutable under sedition laws vary from one legal code to another. Where those legal codes have a traceable history, there is also a record of the change of definition for what constituted sedition at certain points in history. This overview has served to develop a sociological definition of sedition as well, within study of persecution.

The difference between sedition and treason consists primarily in the subjective ultimate object of the violation to the public peace. Sedition does not consist of levying war against a government nor of adhering to its enemies, giving enemies aid, and giving enemies comfort. Nor does it consist, in most representative democracies, of peaceful protest against a government, nor of attempting to change the government by democratic means (such as direct democracy or constitutional convention).

Put simply, sedition is the stirring up of rebellion against the government in power. Treason is the violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or state and has to do with giving aid to enemies or levying war. Sedition is more about encouraging the people to rebel, where treason is actually betraying the country. Sedition laws somewhat equate to Terrorism and Public Order laws."

Obama doesn't want to save Capitalism. I agree with the other poster who said that. He is Marxist and wants to destroy capitalism. How long before we hear "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs". I bet Obama says it in the first 3 months.

I guess Ron White is right: "You can't fix STUPID"

  • Posted By: C. MacLean @ 11/15/2008 1:36:43 PM

Well, for heaven's sake, set the man up to fail, why don't you?

No one person can effectively solve the mess we have gotten ourselves into, and it is ludicrous to imply that Obama or anyone else is, or will be, a savior. Let's have some rational discussion, and let's admit the obvious - we didn't get this dysfunctional in one election cycle or because of one person, and we won't heal in one election cycle and because of one person.

The sobering truth is that everything has been badly over-valued for a long time, and we will all pay the price for a long time to come. Gasoline, houses, union wages, cars, dividends, profits, college educations, vacations - everything was over-inflated and artificially priced too high.

It is everyone's fault, and no-one's fault, but the correction of over-inflated Everything is inevitable. Rather than looking outward for a savior that doesn't exist, we would all do better to look inward and examine what we as individuals did to maintain our greedy lifestyles, and what we can do now to lead our lives differently.

But electing Obama Savior-in-Chief is not going to fix anything. And neither will he, without a lot of help from all the rest of us.

    • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 11/15/2008 6:29:51 PM

Very well said. I'd add that it doesn't surprise me that the people (like Bush) who claim to love free market, the US and freedom, often do their most to act against them. The biggest threat against American capitalism in 70 years came under the misguided leadership of a president who claimed deregulation to be his guiding economic principle. Lesson learned.

  • Posted By: anarcissie @ 11/15/2008 9:46:34 AM

This article has many errors. FDR did not institute socialism. Socialism is the ownership or control of the means of production by the workers, or by the people generally. FDR applied some light Welfarism here and there. Neither the government of Hoover nor the government of Bush 2 was laissez-faire; the "free market" was and is a term of propaganda. Obama will not change things much on his own; he is cautious and conservative.

  • Posted By: charles000 @ 11/15/2008 4:18:44 AM

Here's reality as I understand such to be.

I don't doubt Obama's sincerity for wanting to implement "change" in a progressive direction, and in essence, do the right thing.

Problem is - define the "right thing".

One thing that I do appreciate about Obama is that at least he shows the potential for trying something different, and yet, right from the start, he admits that he is not perfect, nor is any human being on the planet, and no doubt various plans and agendas may have to be reworked as their implementation is put into practice.  He freely admits this will be a work in progress, it's going to be a bumpy road for awhile, and it's not going to please everyone.

At the very least, I give him a lot of credit for trying to say it like it is, and proceed henceforth.

One thing I do know for certain, to have another 4 years of what we just went through via the Bush / Cheney debacle would be the final nail in the coffin for what the USA might have once have been.

The damage done is almost incalculable

Obama's biggest challenge is that he is going to have to uproot the very political machinery that helped put him into office.

Some very hard choices have to be made - political choices which will not be easy or well accepted among many "traditional" democrats from an earlier time.

But these choices have to be made.  The party's over - the old operational models are gone, and are not coming back.

He's going to have to get real, and if necessary, brutal if he wants to genuinely bring about change to a broken system.

I don't doubt that he is highly intelligent, and must be aware of the obvious.

To put it bluntly, there are a lot folks out there who have been living fake lives built on fake careers and titles, with fake pay grades and benefit packages that no industry could actually support.

There are many folks who have never known what it is to be self sufficient, or live without their entire lives being wrapped around government programs to support their otherwise valueless existence.  I know, that sounds harsh, but this is the reality.

Can any of this be changed?

I'll say this much, Barack Obama certainly has his work cut out for him.

That he may be willing to at least try to implement real change is laudable, and I support him in such context.

The reality is, however, that the Titanic is already taking on water, is listing heavily to port, and the rats are scurrying up to the top deck,

This is our last chance - either change, modernize, or perish

    • Posted By: stematwork @ 11/15/2008 9:43:29 AM

We don't have "free market absolutism", not by a long shot! We have government interference at every step, and what we are witnessing today is the market rebalancing, as it always does, like it or not.
At the root of the curent debacle is Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, two government entities, created by the congress and overseen by OFHEO; congress forcing banks to lend to borrowers not credi-worthy in the name of affordable housing; interest rates kept too low for too long by the Fed, thus debasing the currency and flooding the markets with too much money, giving banks the incentive to be creative; excess leveraging of 40 to 1 in financial institutions allowed by regulators; huge budget deficit caused by reckless spending of taxpayers' money by congress; interference in the energy market, since congress has closed off many domestic sources of energy, forcing us to buy it overseas at a huge cost.
As for GM, one reason it is close to bankruptcy is the cost of healthcare for its employees and retirees. Businesses started offering healthcare to their employees years ago when government imposed wage controls, as a way to make up for the shortfall. Now it is expected, but it hurts companies' ability to be competitive on the global stage. Here again, we see interference from the state, not the free market.
The idea that everything would be peachy-peachy if it were run by the government is cute but, alas, not borne by the facts.

The Obama transition team recognizes that possible dilemma which is why they are most interested in building a future administration that crosses party lines, is composed of he most qualified individuals, and will be one that the American people will both trust and have faith in for more than one Obama term.

Whether or not Obama can save 'capitalism' or not remains open to conjecture but it is highly unlikely that Americans will feel the effects of any improvements that he might bring about for at least two years.

    http://tiny.cc/obamaexpectations

If that is the case then Democrats will lose their seats on mass, Obama will most likely be a one termer and he will be considered as having been a gross failure.

Rice is now viewed as having been a failure on all fronts

    http://tiny.cc/condoslegacy

If Obama comes to be regarded as a failure then the question that begs to be asked is, "what effect will it have on the chances of an Afro-American being elected to high office in the future?

Great article about these most tenuous economic times for our nation. Americans understand the seriousness of the matter which is why President-elect Barack Obama will be heading to the White House on Jan 21st. The failure of the Bush administration to expand and grow our nation's economy as well as to identify it's vulnerabilities and correct them before economic catastrophes occur, is one that should never be repeated. The lack of hands-on leadership and clear understanding of economics and the need to adjust poliices based on leading economic indicators is likely something Americans will not see in the new incoming Obama adminstration. Not only was it the Bush administration that failed to take the initiative, but so too, were the GOP congressional members who stood in silent support of this current President, namely a Sen. McCain who agreed with Bush 90% of the time. McCain clearly does not understand the complexities of the global economy, as the foundations of our US economy were not strong.

The politcal party in power gets to set the economic agenda, and the bloggers who comment that our nation's current economic situation can be blamed on past presidents is just plain naive. There is no such thing as absolute capitlaist, socialist, or communist economies in existence within our global economy. Any person who took a high school or college level Economics class knows that fact. So all of these comments about the US economy being "purely" capitalistic and the proposed re-distribution of wealth by our incoming President is hogwash. If that is the case, what exactly is the $700 billion bailout of our nation's financial system by the Bush administration? If these bloggers truly want our US economy to operate on a strict capitalistic model, then there would be no bailouts whatsoever. if that were to be the case, I can only imagine what kind of chaos would be occurring on Wall St at this moment. The most "purely captialistic" economies in existence today are the simple supply and demand markets of impoverished nations in Africa, which none of us bloggers would probably want to experience, in place of what we currently have here at home.

Presdient-elect Obama and his economic advisors have the daunting task of fixing the most powerful capitalistic economy on Earth. As President-elect Obama said, "it will not be easy and it may not occur during his first term of office", but it is something the American people have confidence and hope that his administration will fully succeed at achieving during his terms in office. It is time for our nation to move ahead. It is time for change. God Bless America.

Nice try Mr. Hirsch but you have it completely, 100% backwards. The salient question is not whether Obama can save capitalism but whether capitalism can save Obama. The president-elect, you see, now has to deliver and no matter the size of their majorities in Washington there is one set of laws that Democrats will never be able to change - the laws of economics. Capitalism, quite inconveniently for big government collectivists like yourself and much of the rest of the left, is the only path to broad and sustainable economic growth and the prosperity that Americans have come to enjoy as a result of it. The more bailout and stimulus failures we see the more that the government-as-savior myth (and its liberal sugar daddies) will be revealed. The difference between now and the last time we faced this (Jimmy Carter circa 1978) is that compliments of cable and the internet everyone is watching and there are many sober voices to make sure that we all know just which philosophies are steering the ship. If you think Republicans are down now, just wait and see what will happen to Democrats if they govern like FDR or Herbert Hoover. They and their anti-business, anti-growth economic policies will indeed drive us into the abyss and you'll be lucky to win the White House again before 2100.

This is absurd! Obama is a Marxist. He has no interest in saving capitalism. You compare him to Roosevelt? This is just too much!
