I am not an Idol fan and I HATE reality shows because it allows losers of all walks of life 15 minutes of fame. But, I choose not to watch and would not participate. In the end, to each their own. You can't fully blame a television show for this woman's death. Regardless of her mental capacity, she was a willing participant.

Just another reason these reality showa are getting out of hand. It is a cheap shot to the human race and etically it is wrong to say someone is better than someone else. I can't stand this show to begin with, never could. The show is freak show indeed. That this commentors have no mercy for someone who was mentally ill and committed suicide surely illustrates what kind of people watch this trash.

American Idol is not the first show of its kind. London had the same type of show in the 1700s and 1800s. It was called Bedlam or Bethlehem Hospital. This "hospital" for the mentally ill allowed the public admittance for their amusement at the price of a penny. They were allowed to laugh at, taunt and otherwise torment those unfortunate inmates warehoused in filthy conditions. They were even permitted to bring long sticks with which to poke and antagonized the "patients". Prisoners would be a better word.
American Idol could be humane by screening and kindly dismissing those who are prisoners of delusional thinking they cannot control before they reach the on air auditions. But instead they choose to imitate the inhumanity of Bedlam by placing them in front of an entire nation and then insensitively deriding their lack of talent. I???ve seen enough of the show to understand its format. I don???t watch it. ???It???s cool to be cruel??? seems to be a motto for our age. The fact that this show???s early audition episodes are so popular is a nauseating comment on the widespread lack of humanity and decency in this culture.
Is American Idol culpable for the death of Sandra Goodspeed? I don???t think any rational person would agree with that. That however does not excuse the unconscionable treatment meted out to those clearly having no chance at the title of ???American Idol???.

What is tragic is the fact this woman stated that she'd been "drawing life size pictures" of abdul since she was a child. How could anyone, not just the parents, allow this GIRL to carry on such an obviously unhealthy obsession with paula abdul? The sucide? She has only GOD to answer to for that. Not us. We need to ask ourselves what could we have done to help? Then again...nobody cares anymore. WE are the problem. Not T.V. or anything else for that matter. These are not instincts we are going on people......these are LEARNED behaviors. As far as being a stupid artical? Newsweek got you to read it. Seems pretty smart to me. Show some compassion. LEARN to care. The world would be a better place.
