As a nurse for 39 years with most of them working with children and fragile individuals, I am appalled at some of the crude comments of Simon Cowell and the other judges. It is OK to poke fun, ridicule, and even banter with candidates, but they must keep in mind that they have a responsibility greater than ratings....and that is to uphold human dignity at the expense of a laugh. Some "children" NEVER get over negative criticism, especially in front of others.

nO I DON'T THINK THE SHOW iDOL WILL BE IN ANY REASON TO CANCEL .THE WOMAN WAS MENTALLY ILL .IF SHE HADN'T KILLED HERSELF FOR THIS REASON IT WOULD HAD BEEN SOMETHING ELSE. CAN'T BLAME A SHOW LIKE THE IDOL , BECAUSE THEY SAID SHE DIDN'T HAVE TALENT. . PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DO WHATEVER TO GET ATTENTION WHEN THEY ARE THAT MENTALLY ILL.

  • Posted By: buzlana @ 11/15/2008 7:48:30 PM

I don't believe it will . The woman had mental problems and it shouldn't give the show Idol a bad rap.
The show can't help what people do or think. This woman would had killed herself for some other reason ,if not this one. She was MENTALY ILL A FAMILY MEMBER OR A SOMEONE IN THE MEIDICAL FIELD SHOULD HAD STEPPED IN AT SOME POINT AND HELPED HER . bUT EVEN AT THAT MAY HAD NOT DONE ANY GOOD .. LORD HAVE MERCY ON HER SOUL...

How about " CAN NEWSWEEK SURVIVE ANOTHER STUPID ARTICLE?" I think that would be more appropriate. At least this stupid article is related to Newsweek. The woman that killed herself had NOTHING to do with Paula Abdul. Tens of thousands of people have auditioned for American Idol. Is this the first person that killed themselves? Grow up Newsweek!!

if a life is lost by thier own hand OH WELL, good riddance! I mean if they couldnt handle rejection then maybe they are better off DEAD!!, seriously, they leave grief for anyone who around them, because they wont get over it. They'll be mourn for about 20 minutes and life will move on. Really now.

One can only hope the "American Show for the Mentally Challenged" will go off the air cuz of this!
What a waste of time and space.

  • Posted By: KLVD @ 11/15/2008 6:58:17 PM

Seriously, WTF does this fan have to do with the "survival" of the show for the mentally challenged? One could only hope the show goes off the air! What a waste of space.

BET I "WON'T" BE WATCHING !!!! Judges? Lil Boy Pink, Miss Lush brain & Clappy Limey Simon the cow. Farm animals have better manner & knowledge then these three. Let's boot these three off & get some real judges on the show.

Although American Idol didn't directly cause the girl to commit suicide, the fascination with the "bad" contestants will continue to play into this sort of behavior. Those who wtach the early episodes or who deliberately vote en masse for a less than talented contestant are just as guilty. After the William Hung debacle, I determined to not watch until after the horrible early shows were over. Actually, I watched the last Idol very little. The judges seem to deliberately pick several less talented contestants so that Simon can have plenty to ridicule. The top 12 never seem to be the stars in the making that one would expect. This show is not about discovering talent, but about making fun of people, and crushing whatever dreams they may have. Give me Ted Mack and the Amateur Hour any day. At least he didn't choose people just for the pleasure of mocking them. That was a show which truly found real talent. What is really sad is how many people watch Idol for the sour comments and the drunken antics of Paula Abdul. To Idol, I say, shape up or ship out. Your attitude and raison d'etre are seriously lacking in moral fiber.

What should not be allowed is this stupid ignorant tag line of this article by Ramin Setoodeh. You should be imprisoned for life or put to death for even printing "can American Idol Survive etc.... How stupid.

Which election....the one Bush stole in 2000?

    • Posted By: jhawke @ 11/15/2008 5:52:25 PM

Huh? Moron! The Supreme Court halted recounts because the DEMOCRATs only wanted to recount three DEMOCRAT counties in Florida. Seen any illegalities in that election investigated by DEMOCRAT congress people? Nah, didn't think so. Grow up, you mindless liberal moonbat hysterical fraud.

American Idol does for the American Gentry, what the Jerry Springer's "show" provides for the slightly-less intellectual giants in America. With nonsense such as these wonderful examples of the "art" on television, need we be too concerned for the demise of the human species/ala the American Culture?
Gandhi was once asked what he thought of the American Culture to which he is reported to have replied - "American Culture, that would be nice."

It is a very sad story but I don't think it is really any different than any other star that has a stalker or unhinged fan. Paula didn't cause this girls problems or her (very unfortunate) death. She was merely the thing the girl obsessed over. The only thing that would have helped Goodspeed was if she had gotten psychiatric help. Abdul couldn't have controlled or even altered any of it, it has nothing to do with her.

I hope and pray with EVERYTHING inside of me the show is CANCELLED and quickly. They have done more damage than will or can ever be reported. My sincere thanks to the news media for NOT letting this pass into history easily. To tell a contestant they didn't make the grade is ONE thing, to tear them apart like a pack of wolves is quite another. I can NOT stand to see people battered physically OR MENTALLY - that is all the show is good for.

Give it a rest. Her problems trancended Idol. The media will milk this for everything its worth. Just look at the election. Another farce.

it will probally be called the" idol" CURSE., while its just nature taking it's course,.Idol does have a way of showcasing some of the most emotionally fragile people, and while the auditions are the favorite part of the season for most people, i cringe watching obviously emotionally impaired indivuals, but ratings are best on those nights...and it's more outragous every season...never the less i think the show is boring and over anyway....it is all about product placment and advertising...and when you have finalist doing better than winners, it may be time to reformulate.
