Sure it's euphoria now. When realism sets in after people realize that the government can't solves everyone's problems and after we see Obama's administration be rocked by gaffes and scandals in the latter half of his tenure (as is typical of most presidents' terms), we will be looking back at all this optimism and extraordinary press about an untested president-elect and wondering why everyone seemed to be on some sort of Obama brainwashing drug. The guy hasn't proven anything yet...t's been all talk and "hope.". Sports and politics have a lot in common...you really can't get too emotionally involved because sooner or later your team is going to lose...that's why I don't watch sports anymore....I just go about my work of helping other people around me and read the sports news the next day. People need to stop taking politics so seriously and instead worry more about what they can do for each other and for themselves.

    • Posted By: littleabige @ 11/15/2008 2:12:16 AM

From where I am sitting I think people need to take politics more seriously. Half of the people that I am surrounded by that voted for Obama couldn't tell you anything about his political views. If they are going to vote, they need to know who they are voting for. Thus, taking it a little more serious.

      • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/15/2008 7:13:46 PM

Actually, they get to vote anyway.

        Welcome to America.

      • Posted By: jluc @ 11/15/2008 2:41:31 AM

You are right. People need to be more serious about true substance and less serious about the "I got a crush on Obama" girl.

    • Posted By: girlfromak2 @ 11/15/2008 2:12:31 AM

been there. done that. I have given till there is nothing left to give. I have been used up by those in need. My husband has told me that I care too much and that is part of the reason I am on Anti-depression meds. So that is where all that giving gets you.

      • Posted By: jluc @ 11/15/2008 2:32:08 AM

I guess I'm in different situation...I'm a doctor and help 200 patients a week. The way to treat your depression is to help yourself first, then you can help others. The stronger you are, the more people you can help. That's why airline stewardesses tell you to put the oxygen on yourself first before you put it on your child during a loss of cabin pressure. People can give more to others if they first give to themselves through education and/or new innovative opportunities. I hope the Obama administration does not stifle the entrepreneurial spirit of America, which is what made America the superpower it is, one which is based on benevolence and a willingness to help other countries....we can only do so because our country is the wealthiest in the world.

        • Posted By: littleabige @ 11/15/2008 2:39:39 AM

Having been on Anti-Depression meds since I was 11 I can say that it is a chemical imbalance that people like me can not control. It is passed through our blood lines and we are born with it. We need medications. As a Dr. I would think you would have known that though.

          • Posted By: jluc @ 11/15/2008 3:07:15 AM

We absolutely do need medications, and depression is indeed a chemical imbalance of serotonin and other neurotransmitters. However, you said that giving to others got you nowhere but more depression and that is incorrect. People who have depression have a recognized health problem that is marked by a negative outlook on life and society. Patients with diagnosed major depression cannot act in roles of major responsibility, and I have many patients who have actually filed for disability because of major depression. Doctors themselves are actually at a large risk of losing their state medical license because treating patients while being diagnosed with depression is prohibited. I hope your depression is well treated...I do not think however that you should be telling others to give up on giving. This presidency discussion has nothing to do with your depression diagnosis. I am signing off now.

I never said the things you mentioned in this post. That was a post by girlfromak2, look above my post and you will see her post :)

Signed back on. I apologize on replying to the wrong post. Girlfromak2 should not be telling others to stop giving and we cannot have a respectable country with that type of talk. Going to bed....have a nice weekend!

I provide therapy for some of those unplanned children, peaceandquiet, and unless people actually are involved with these families, they have no idea just how serious this problem is! There isn't enough bulletin space to describe the abuse, neglect, ignorance, apathy, etc, This article, while probably not referring to a boom of bi-racial children as much as a baby boom in general, scares me to death. We do not need a boom of carefully planned and prepared for infants of ANY color, much less those which occur as a side effect to unprotected sexual relations with 'whoever', without consideration of the consequences. Back in the early 70's, when I was still in high school, words like environment and ecology were just coming into fashion. And there was an intellectual, compassionate and SANE movement called Zero Population Growth, which merely proposes that we act responsibly and try and achieve a balance between our birth and death rates (like the white/euro groups). It was silenced, probably because of the same fear of being viewed as racist, which shackles us today. As long as we struggle under the yolk of being "Politically Correct", we will not be able to address some serious issues which future generations will look back at us and wonder, "what the hell?" We allow women to have litters of kids she cannot possibly take care of, and to me much worse, allow some men to sire upwards of 20 children from multiple mothers with few if any consequences!!! Mothers who have had so many children already permanently removed by the state, that the authorities remove subsequent newborns from them at the HOSPITAL!! But we can't force her to take Norplant or have her tubes tied. Those dead-beat, exploitative, self-serving "Fathers", if you can call them that, are never punished or even given a lifetime supply of condoms with a judicial warning of put them on or else! We can't violate anyone's civil rights, now can we? What about the rights of children to be born into a FAMILY who wants them, planned for them, can provide for them (NOT the state, my taxes, your taxes), and won't allow them to be hurt, neglected...you don't want to know what happens to these kids. And do you all realize how many of these 'hard working men from Mexico, etc, who are only here to earn some $$ for their poor families back home, etc etc boo-hoo'....are here getting women pregnant....I gotta stop now. There's just too much. What's really sad is many people will read this and discount my words as somehow racially biased. All I ask is for people to think before they vote and put on a condom before sex! The color of a person's skin is of no consequence. It's the quality of their lives I care about. And unplanned children statistically have it harder, are more likely to be abused or neglected, than those who are prepared for. Maybe Obama can get that message across without being discounted as "racist"!

    • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/15/2008 7:12:30 PM

"We can't violate anyone's civil rights, now can we? "

No, we can't. Your rant was an obscenity that Mao would have been proud of.

    • Posted By: stematwork @ 11/15/2008 9:23:19 AM

i agree with many things you said in your rant.
      but you terrify me.
you keep saying "we let mothers have litters of kids" and "we allow fathers to sire"

OF COURSE WE FREAKING DO! TO use the time honored phrase of the 80's: IT's STILL A FREE COUNTRY!

What kind of scary, hitler like world would it be to impose population control? That's would make our already bloated gov. an unmanageable monster.

  • Posted By: peaceandquiet @ 11/15/2008 2:59:15 AM

Although the comment is factual its not something you want to here in a time like this. WIth the economy going down, all these babies born to unwed mothers or babies being neglected to die, ababoned and so forth. We don't have enough responsible parents to have a baby boom. Lets hope most of the excited wanting to have celebatory sex people used protection.

    • Posted By: librarienne @ 11/15/2008 3:56:38 PM

I admit it, I felt much better about the idea of having a baby once I knew McCain wouldn't be in office. Things feel hopeful to me now, in a way they haven't in a while. My husband and I are in our mid-30s, we have good careers, we have good credit, and we pay our taxes. What about that makes us too irresponsible to have children?

    • Posted By: littleabige @ 11/15/2008 3:03:23 AM

Lol, I don't exactly see the people who would be having sex to celebrate Obama as being the kind to use protection!! :P

HHSmith - you and yours are entitled to your opinion but keep your fingers out of mine. Abortion is a peronal belief that should be kept just that - personal. The government and politicians should stay out of it - they certainly have better things to do with their time and our $$$ these days. If religion wants to preach on the subject to their followers, great. but don't push your or your churches beliefs on me. And if you are a man, you are not entitled to speak on the subject - you'll never ever be in the position to make such a difficult choice. Pro choice is not pro abortion and its time you rabidly pro life people figured that out.

Perhaps after we as a nation balance our budget, get untangled from wars we have no business being in much less funding, fix our financial system, fix our crumbling infrastruture (oh say, highways and bridges, air traffic control, and the decaying power grid), make corporate America as well as citizens take care of the environment, end our dependance on oil and other nonrenewable energy, end hunger and homelessness, create an education system that is not so pathetic, and create a health care system that covers everyone, just to mention a few, we can free up our government to have a debate on an issue that is a personal choice. Until then, button it up and focus your attention on something that government should be spending time on.

  • Posted By: NealWirth @ 11/15/2008 9:38:06 AM

Being liberals, most of the kids will probably be aborted.

    • Posted By: PMarlowe @ 11/15/2008 3:32:53 PM

Have you studied statistics? Do you seriously think that "most" babies are aborted? Do you at all realize the tiny numbers of people who have abortions compared to those who don't? It's hilarious to hear you right wing nutjobs talking about the "Pro Abortion" as if there really was such a thing - as if people are going around forcing people or even encouraging people to have abortions. Not like the Right Wing Eugenics war of the 1930s, when they forced people who weren't "right in the head" to have abortions and forced sterlizations.

Funny if it wasn't so damned scary and sad to hear.

I wonder if Obama's mom would have opted for abortion-on-a-whim if it had been as legal, accessible and socially acceptable back then as he is determined to make it today? Just think of all the hope and change that we wouldn't be celebrating today if the generations before ours were as self-serving, ignorant, arrogant, delusional and blind as ours is! After all, he wouldn't be President-elect, he would have been an inconvenience and he would be DEAD.

    • Posted By: PMarlowe @ 11/15/2008 3:27:59 PM

What do you mean "opted for abortion-on-a-whim if it had been as legal, accessible and socially acceptable back then as he is determined to make it today?"

It IS legal today. He can't make it any MORE legal. One thing he aims to do is ensure the Right Wing Nutjobs don't make it ILLEGAL like it used to be, during the time of back-alley abortions and deaths.

      • Posted By: PMarlowe @ 11/15/2008 3:31:00 PM

Hmmm... looks like my first version made it after all... oh well...

    • Posted By: PMarlowe @ 11/15/2008 3:29:43 PM

Just what did you mean, Danjod, by "opted for abortion-on-a-whim if it had been as legal, accessible and socially acceptable back then as he is determined to make it today?"

It IS legal today. He can't make it any MORE legal. What he's determined to do is ensure this right is not revoked for women today, reverting us back to all the back-alley abortions and deaths of the past.

I have just read a new low in journalistic ineptitude.Perhaps NEWSWEEK could edify us in it`s next pathetic journalistic faux pas with a story about the bowel evacuations of it`s staff and the relative size and colour of their respective stools.CHANGE YOU CAN CONCEIVE IN is callous, obscene deragotory and lame beyond belief! STUPID ignorant people copulating because some little man won an election is oh so over the top that I can`t believe how boorish the editor was in allowing such trash to see the light of day!Is there no decorum left in our hell bent world and has common decency been surrendered to the stench of degenerate modernity.I am unabashedly disgusted with this obscene stupidity another reflection of just how low we have sunk as a species over the past forty years or so!

    • Posted By: C. MacLean @ 11/15/2008 1:21:41 PM

Oh, grow up! People celebrating by having sex is as old as time, as are baby boomlets after a celebration. There's nothing obscene or disgusting about it, and any time a new life is ushered into the world its a good thing, regardless of how or why.

Judging by your identifier, hangemhigh, you aren't a very forgiving person. You may wish to work on that, before you find your own intestines all knotted up - or maybe they are already, and that's why you are so bowel fixated.

I guess its okay to come out of the closet and admit that I'm proud to go to bed in my cushy-soft "Obama-Pajamas". It keeps me warm, and I sleep so much more comfortably. I'm thinking about having an Obama-Pajama Party. Anybody care to join?

  • Posted By: mustyouspeak @ 11/14/2008 11:08:05 PM

Their people do things? Ignorance is Bliss, and will remain that way as long as "People like You" exist. And if you knew anything about the subject, you would know that white women obtain 60% of all abortions, their abortion rate is well above that of minority women. Although black and hispanic women are more than 3 times as likely as white women to have an abortion, white women are seen statistically to carry through with the act.

I despise ignorance, but not as much as I do an ignorant racist. Putting yourself in the know before you speak/type is always suggested.

    • Posted By: kitten81301@yahoo.com @ 11/15/2008 12:56:44 PM

It is only a thought but in the year 2008 why are we still discussing abortion? With the education and and birth control available today NO ONE should be pregnant today unless they choose to be. The exception of course would be rape.

  • Posted By: trinity0770 @ 11/14/2008 11:21:46 PM

I'm a republican, and I know plenty fellow republicans that abort. Abortion doesn't discriminate. Many of them are simply very quiet about it, because its opposing to their faith. I can't imagine what it would be like if they sought them out illegally (if roe vs. wade was reversed). I believe they would have still done it, but it would be far more dangerous.

    • Posted By: Nurse Ratchet @ 11/14/2008 11:50:06 PM

Trinity0770, you are clearly the most level-headed person on this discussion board. And the most balanced. Honestly, you give me hope for the rest who seem overwhelmingly disillusioned about their "facts".

  • Posted By: Shepard06 @ 11/15/2008 12:22:03 AM

It could very well happen! I know for a fact that there has been a baby boom at the facility where I work and many voted for Obama.I know of one women, despite her worries about financial affairs, decided to have her fourth child at the age of 41!!!!

    • Posted By: marinabreeze @ 11/15/2008 12:42:25 PM

So when she found herself pregnant, what would have been the better choice...abort it??

This kills me about conservatives...they call themselves being "pro-life" and making sure other people's children aren't killed through abortion, yet they don't want to preserve the lives of other people's children who are already born. They want to talk about fostering the culture of life, but are more concerned with the bottom line than actually putting their money where their mouths are. This just reinforces my belief that many conservatives don't really believe their own rhetoric.

    • Posted By: girlfromak2 @ 11/15/2008 12:37:16 AM

Well, I guess that her baby will also be paying for the deficit we have that has been around since before it was concieved! :)

    • Posted By: girlfromak2 @ 11/15/2008 12:33:53 AM

This is the type of thinking that liberals have. I would give my eye teeth to have one more baby, but will not until our finances are straight. I am also 40 and know that time is not on my side for childbearing... but I have no way to justify another child unless we were more secure in the money dept. How is your co worker justifying having another when she is worried about feeding another child?

    • Posted By: girlfromak2 @ 11/15/2008 12:29:55 AM

I would like to have more children. But for the same financial worries that your co worker has, I respect the taxpayers too much to lay this burden on them.

  • Posted By: normaldude @ 11/15/2008 12:58:02 AM

      Do they tax welfare checks?

      • Posted By: wakeup804 @ 11/15/2008 2:04:09 AM

you all sound ignorant. I am a mixed race person and the people i know black and white work everyday. we are educated, kids go to good schools, we pay taxes, and your comments show a lack of class and knowledge on your part. instead of spewing your ignorant rantings, why don't you go out and make a contribution in this countrey. it is amazing to me, such ignorance still exists, and you spew this foolishness like you are informed. rather pathetic. if you don't like the new President, that is your right, but go out and educate yourselves, before you paint an entire race based on your ignorant a$$ rantings. Where do pathetic people like you come from? Tired of your dead end jobs, your lack of incentive. your lack of education, not moving up as fast as we are? what is it. maybe you should actually get out of your ignorant box and meet some people of color you don't see on the 11 o'clock news. We are educated, motivated and achieving, is that what really bothers you.

        • Posted By: pezled @ 11/15/2008 8:23:54 AM

          • Posted By: marinabreeze @ 11/15/2008 12:36:48 PM

There are plenty of white people who do the same thing...sit on their porches, breed and collect checks. Unfortunately, I know some of them. Pezled, you see what you want to see, not what is really out there.

If you goofed off in school and now you find yourself in a dead-end job that is being shipped off to China while the CEOs are getting golden parachutes, take some personal responsibility for your place in life rather than blaming blacks and other minorities for working hard and taking advantage of opportunities not previously afforded them.

  • Posted By: Lee NC @ 11/14/2008 8:08:23 PM

I wish I could get excited over overratte hype like this. Similiar to Obama, this is coming from a 50/50 hispanic/white American so I guess its politically correct for me to comment on this issue (how lame). Over population is just a myth and this world can support as many people as we can breed so let's keep it up. Parents today do such a good job of raising their children to have so much character and responsibility. If I were Obama I would be embarrassed to have so much hype over race after winning the election. This was never an issue when running so why is it now? How about focusing the catastrophe that this country has come to. BUY NOW and THINK LATER when its too late has been our motto. I NEED and I DESERVE need to be taken out of our day to day vocabulary. On second thought, I'm just being bitter and I should just relax and go FKCU someone so I can make a baby too. The earth can feel like I took another unnecessary crap on it.

Maybe you all should expand your minds instead of spewing this ignorance. I am multiracial, four college degrees, and so are most of the people I associate with. Perhaps is you got your information on other races from something other than the 11 o'clock news you wouldn't sound so ignorant. But you know what, stay ignorant, and we will continue to walk right past your ignorant a$$es, in income, education and class. Is this how you all feel important? Hide behind a computer and spew ignorance? You all keep ragging on Obama, on his worst day he will never be as bad as W. Look at this country, kids dying in iraq, finances in ruin, no creditability anywhere in the world, and all you can do is hate. Pathetic. Most of you might want to try and get a little education, cause you sound ignorant. But I get it, no real power in your own lives so you all get together spew this BS and feel better about yourselves. My fouth degree gave me that power. Maybe you should try it. Ignorant bunch of losers.

      • Posted By: littleabige @ 11/15/2008 2:23:25 AM

I get my information on other races by watching my neighbors. Watching them sitting on their porches, smoking, yelling at their children and collecting checks while others that happen to not be of their race are GOING TO WORK!! You are not the norm for someone who is multiratial, I hate to say it but it is true. Don't put the fact that they choose to sit and get money from others back on those of us who are better people for not doing what they do. You are the ignorant one if you can't see what is going on here.

        • Posted By: rttinker @ 11/15/2008 12:21:25 PM

The ignorance being displayed in this chain is staggering. Do a little research instead of buying into whatever supports your pre-disposed beliefs. If you did, you'd know that over 2/3 of welfare and non-entitlement aid recipients are in fact non-hispanic whites, and about 2/3 of AFDC recipients are not black. Also, 34% of AFDC recipients stay in the program for a year or less, and more than half are off after 2 years. Also, almost 3/4 of recipients have 2 children or fewer, and the mother in most recipient families is 20 to 39 years old (fewer than 8% are teenagers, and fewer than 12% are over 40).

I don't know what some of you see on the porches around you, but making sweeping generalizations about multiracial individuals based on what you see there is absurd. If you don't like what you see, move.

Look, I work too and have 2 kids. I don't like it when I see people game the system, but the statistics demonstrate that it is the exception, not the rule. I find it a bit odd that so many people bash the "liberal media" and complain about their stories being irrelevant and/or inaccurate, but when an article comes out about 'welfare mothers' suddenly everyone buys it hook, line, and sinker. Is it possible that the ' media' might be exaggerating in this case as well as the ones you don't agree with?

      • Posted By: tranya55 @ 11/15/2008 3:05:09 AM

Hey wakeup! Wakeup and check your grammar and spelling before you criticize others for their ignorance! But, good for you, goin' to college and all!! Four degrees? Really? In what? Not to pry too much into your personal business (but, you started it), but I'm curious. Did you get a student loan (s)? Grants? Did you use your multiracial status to your advantage? As someone who works with abused/neglected kids and their families (the vast majority from our lower socioeconomic ranks), and gets paid a pitiful salary for doing so, I hope I am contributing something to society. I also spent years helping to rescue the mutiltude of unwanted pets from those same 'hoods at my own expense. Nobody has forced me, of course. It just grabs my ass to be hardworking, underpaid, overly taxed (in my opinion), and STILL struggling to pay back my student loans!!! If the day ever comes when the takers outnumber the givers, we are screwed! So, please, wakeup804, tell me you are doing something to give back to our society? And encouraging all of your educated 'associates' to do so as well?

      • Posted By: theendisnear2009 @ 11/15/2008 2:44:37 AM

how many of those degrees did you actually pay for? whites have to use message boards to express their feelings because we are racists if we say these things in public. unlike blacks who can say whatever they want anytime they want without consequence. who is oppressed now?

        • Posted By: littleabige @ 11/15/2008 2:51:19 AM

Thank you for posting this. So true!!

      • Posted By: theendisnear2009 @ 11/15/2008 2:41:18 AM

Dear wakeup804. Whites have to hide behind a computer screen because if we don't we are racist. You know it and I know it. You need to use one of your 4 free degrees to double check your grammar. Whites in this country need to wake up and stop giving hand outs to everyone else. I have no problem with anyone no matter the color, if they support themselves and don't want me to pay their way through life. We will see what the saviour brings in 4 years. Everyone blames Bush for their problems. Maybe we shouldn't be in Iraq, but Bush didn't cause 9-11, Katrina, or the economic problems. The housing market caused the recession and that is thanks to the liberal dems forcing banks to give bad loans to people who can't pay them back. When Obama raises your taxes to pay for all those programs you desire don't blame us. Oh thats right you have to have a job to pay taxes and not receive those programs.

Gawd!! So many sore losers and racists in here! The man won fair and square. Cool your jets--let's see what he and his people can do before spewing so much garbage. Why do so many of you believe that every black is on welfare, a baby maker or that Obama won because of the "black" vote? The "black vote" didn't help Kerry or Gore, did it? If you were drowning and a black person put out his hand to help, would you accept? If Obama hands out a Bush-style stimulus check, will you be the first one fighting and pushing to get it and complaining if it arrives one day late? Golly gee, you betcha!

Of course people are having sex/babies! For the first time in 8 years, Americans aren't afrais to bring children into the world! Bush and the Repugs had everyone afraid we would be wiped out in a nuclear holocaust. Then again, there's still 2 months left lol... In all seriousness, Obama inspires people to believe in themselves, and in the future of our great nation. Hope can be quite a powerful aphrodisiac. YES WE CAN!
