"The opponents of gay marriage will tell you that the people have spoken. It's truer to say that money talks. The Mormons donated millions to the anti effort; the Knights of Columbus did, too" ----OK and what about the money that was donated by actors and companies like Google and Yahoo that donated against Prop 8? Is the value of the Knights of Columbus or the Mormon dollar of greater value and buys votes while the value money that come from Yahoo or Google which does not buy votes? If we are going to redefine marriage to include gays ok then fine. Lets redefine other words like Father to include women and Mother to include men. Its only fair that men should have right to be called a "mother" and receive benefits that come from being mothers. But one might say well a mother can't be a man and a father can't be a woman. If this is true than how can a real marriage be a wife and wife or husband and husband when every idiot knows a real marriage is a husband and a wife?

People like Anna Quindlen write as if every person in the bible was a W.A.S.P. Adam was dark-complected. Moses married an Etheopian woman. David was never criticized for marrying outside of his race. The misinterpretation of the bible was that you were forbidden to marry outside of your religion. Interracial marriage was accepted and the people who claim the bible promoted bigotry are themselves bigots.

TELL ME AGAIN: WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE BIBLE THAT HAS YOU ALL HUNG UP? IT WILL NOT BE LONG BEFORE 1/2 THE POPULATION OF THE WORLD WON'T RECOGNIZE THE BIBLE AND........................OOPS. YOU GOT ME THERE. ANYHOW, THIS COUNTRY FOLLOWS THE CONSTITUTION, NOT THE OLD NOR THE NEW TESTAMENTS.

The author brings up the enormous money spent by the Mormon church but the opponents of prop 8 also spent an enormous amount of money. Also she failed to mention that the majority of African-Americans and Latinos voted for Prop 8 and if not for them it would not have passed.

Great article with valid points for anyone whose mind is open. This should be of particular ingterest to our African-American brothers and sisters who think that "civil" rights deals only with racial inequality. And, it should be of particular interest to any religious person who believes that he/she has the right to impose his or her religion upon others. God told each of us to be loving toward each other. The U.S. Constitution says that we are all equal under the law. What is so difficult to understand about those two simple concepts?

And like the civil rights movement, it will take time. The 13th Amendment and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 were seperated by fewer than 100 years. Now, just 44 years after CRA, an African American is about to be our president. Issues like gay marriage (and race) that deal close to personal beliefs or long-held traditions are like a minefield; one should walk slowly and carefully across them, ever mindful of the dangers of moving too quickly. People will come around to gay marriage in time. It is inevitable. Be patient. Stirring up anger and hate in the cause of liberal piety will only drive those "on the fence" away from you and the far right even further away.

WHAT YOU DON'T SEEM TO REALIZE IS THAT THE PEOPLE YOU ADDRESSED YOUR COMMENT TO ARE IGNORANT, MEAN-SPIRTED CONSERVATIVES BIGOTS. DID I ALSO MENTION THAT THEY ARE STUPID?

      GREAT COMMENT!

      • Posted By: Dawnsie @ 11/15/2008 10:03:53 PM

How do you know what "our African-American brothers & sisters" think? Any moron knows that "civil rights" is not solely about racial injustice. Your comment was very ignorant & racist.

Same-Opposite-Sex marriages will remain a hot unresolved subject for a while in California. Other states will sort it out first. A well written analysis of the topic:

I'm amazed that you are comparing black civil rights to homosexual marriage. If I was black I would be outraged! People choose to be homosexual (I know, I know, your liberal college professors told you otherwise).
Conservative families are tired of being bombarded by the gay mafia. Voters understood that homosexual marriage has nothing to do with "equal rights".

IF YOU WERE A BLACK MAN, YOU WOULD KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST. I AM A WHITE LIBERAL WHO HAS KNOWN WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE SPITTED UPON BY WHITE CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES WHO, BY AND LARGE, ARE MEAN-SPIRTED BIGOTS. WHAT DID YOU AND YOUR KIND DO WHEN HITLER KILLED MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF JEWS (WHITE), CATHOLICS (WHITE), DISABLED (WHITE) GYPSYS (WHITE)? RAISED YOUR ARM AND SALUTED, DIDN'T YOU?

      • Posted By: MDH SacramentoCA @ 11/15/2008 10:52:33 PM

Wow! Anger issues abound with FRMR IRS AGENT! I guess anyone who is not a "white liberal" is a hateful Christian conservative who is mean-spirited and bigoted? If that were the case, David Duke would be president-elect now. Now there's a hateful, bigot! You have a real problem with, well, everyone. What a shame. So much rage.

From the conservative party's own hypocritical mouth! Protect Marriage, Protect Children, Prohibit Divorce!

How many people out there who voted for Prop 8 would vote to take away their OWN rights?

The argument comparing gay marriage to interracial marriage is old and never correct. I wish Anna Quindlen would be intellectually honest and profess her hatred for all things religious. She hides behind the intelligent fortitude of the secular educated, as opposed to those bitter religious folk who cling to their religion, guns and antipathy for people who are not like them.

This is not about interracial marriage. Also, please keep in mind the Loving case was about a man and a woman, not two people of the same gender.

It is very unwise to try to make this a civil rights issue because it only serves to alienate the people who have truly been discriminated against in this country. Those who have suffered unmentionable atrocities because of the color of their skin, something that they cannot change or keep a private matter. Being gay is a lifestyle, not a matter of birth, as such they are not a minority group. Furthermore, they currently have all the rights of married people, they just want to be called "married", which has been defined by God as between a man and a woman, not between two human beings. It doesn't matter if you don't believe in God because he established what marriage is, who can be married, and the purposes for which marriage was established. Anyone that wants to exercise their own will to change that is not being respectful to God, and that is never a good idea.

I know I'm not as smart as our "conservative" friends but it's my understanding that those who established our system of government were wise enough to set up systems that could balance each other including those elected by the people and the courts who would make decisions that might not conform to the emotional impact or bigotry of citizens at any given moment in history. A key component of our form of government is that every citizen is considered equal under the law. It is because of "unelected" courts that many citizens who were formerly treated unequally by laws approved by the people now have equal justice. Praise God for such wisdom and for the courts. And, shame on any person who believes that equality is his or her perogative to give or deny to any other citizen.

Just in case any of you missed it, Elton John was on the side of Proposition 8. He said he didn't think marriage was for gay people and he was perfectly happy with his civil union that gives him all the rights of a married couple. I always did like Elton. Smart guy. And Anne, by the way, there are a very large number of gay people who agree with him.

"no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry." Yes! exactly! Everyone has the same rights to marry the opposite sex! That does not seem to be discrimination. BTW, I did vote against Calforinia Proposition 8. I really do not care if same sex people marry, but I would like to see civil unions abolished. Lets let more people enjoy the marriage tax DISadvantages!

In 1967 when the Supreme Court ruled on Loving V Virginia, 70% of the people in the US felt they had made a mistake. If we had allowed the people to decide in 1967, interracial might still be illegal in 16 states. If we let the majority make rules for the minority, the minority will never have rights.

  • Posted By: GaryPA @ 11/15/2008 9:55:35 PM

I simply can't wait until the day comes when same sex couples have the same rights as everybody else, and yes, openly show affection, even kiss, right in front of you, even in front of your children, on the street. And there is no doubt that day will come. There is all the difference in the world between ''democracy' and tyranny, and what many of you are advocating is the tyranny of the majority over the minory, in a wholely inappropriate area, human and civil rights. It's not about raising or lowering taxes, it'snot about allocation of public funds, we are talking about the basic rights of human beings. That should never be put to the vote of the mob. We are, or rather, many of us are, better than that. We await the rest of your's evolution.

People are not the source of power in a democracy, unless they are the people that have been forced to do without by a people who where convinced they were the powerful. Slavery, bigotry, segregation, and so many other wrongs in this nation have been righted by those who were told by the people who thought they were the source of power you cannot have what we have. Exchange Gay for Black and go back 40 years years and you will se there is no difference in that gays are being separated, told not to marry, harassed, threatened and being told to stay away from a what mans priviloege.....

In case it has eluded you, the "people have spoken" only has relevance WITHIN the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
