This is a common out come from dpression, along with drug and alcohol abuse. This signs of a loss of control need to be looked out for. Its these indicators that require a family drug intervention to prevent such overlooked issues in our society. I hope this can be prevented in the future by caring about the well being of our fellow man and addressing there needs befor something tragic like this happens. It doesn't need to go this far if we all learn to control our self.

It is pretty hard to imagine what was going on in the author Ms Liu's mind. It is a very calculating piece and very instigating. What China is going through is no more problematic than any society that had gone through a fundamental transition. The failing of one family cannot be generalized as the norm of the society. The vast majority of Chinese appeared to be more resilient than what Ms Liu prismed through this isolated case. I see a lot of similarities between China and US these days. With large mortgage (as opposed to $45 monthly rent) and a larger family to support, an unemployed autoworker these days in the US does not fare any better than those in China, why shouldn't they (where to find a 75 cent burger)? That is the cost of the free market and the ugly side of pure capitalism - winner takes all. For China, one generation has to pay for the price in making the transition during retraining and catching up. It is the survival of the fitest game, very unfortunately. Instead of doing accurate reporting buttressed by statistical data and more representative cases, Ms Liu chose the sensationalist reporting style borderline "tabloid". It is pretty disturbing. I hope Newsweek can replace this brain-half numb Ms Liu with someone better in the Beijing bureau.

We Do NOT HAVE TIME TO GET INVOLVED IN CHINA"S POLITICAL CULTURE. WE HAD A CHANCE DURING TIANIANMEN SQUARE AND DID NOTHING.

Wow...my professor was a prophet in this respect. He predicted that the communist government of China would be overthrown the day citizens would become dissatisfied with its ability to provide them with economic growth. 7% was the number he cited...anything below and you have trouble. At some point, China will HAVE to adopt democratic reforms to allow for greater economic growth. Economic reforms come first...then the political reforms.

The murdered tourist was actually the last decendent of Western Bald Eagle clan whose founder took the famous twenty bell-strike sword stances scroll and left for America in 19th century to avoide feudal killing in the mainland. Tang being the last decendent of Wu-Tang clan knew that his destiny is to settle the feud once and for all once he found out that the clan member was coming to the Olympic disguising as member of US swimming team. That's reason why he disassociated himself from the loved one, visited the bath house to received the highest Qui-gong power from the twin-lotus petal maiden. He made up all the facade to trick the police so no one will be able to trace back to the century old family fued. As everyone knows the Wu-Tang clan member won the fight. However his flying tiger stance did not work out as he run out of his Qui-gong energy mid-flight and thus dropped dead literally. To the bro on previous comment, 'don't take seriously about the western view or eastern view. They are all crap if you take them literally. And if you take them seriously you will get sick. there are enough sick people on earth as it is. And everybody saves face. No wonder there are so many brand of moisturizers!'

Tang did his fellow Chinese (and the world) a huge favor by killing himself. He sure did earn my respect a bit there. I only wish more people like him had the balls to kill themselves. He's a loser and the Chinese surely will go on without him. Its only too bad he had to kill innocent people in the process. He won't be missed.

In 10, 15, maybe 20 years from now, sooner or later the Chinese will get over their "saving face" thing, if they haven't done so already. Tang seems more like the outliner than the norm, even by China's standards (I could be wrong). I am rather skeptical that he represents mainsteam China. **Every** society has its Dan Quixes, but they're not the mainstream.

'Saving face' is a social norm that keeps check on society. China has very little crime and 'face saving' plays a big role. It's a concept worthy importing. Face saving also motivates people to suceed and pursue higher education. Saving face can be a heavy burden at times, but it acts as an invisible hand guiding a person's actions each day to be upright and honorable. Not bad. Helps to keep you out of trouble.

Comment: 'Saving face' is a social norm that keeps check on society. "

Is it really? I am a bit skeptical that Tang represents the social norm of China. I seriously doubt saving face is still THE social norm, or at the very least not to the same degree Tang cared about. Sure, China has its problems (many in fact), but I won't judge 1 billion people by one guy.

"China has very little crime and 'face saving' plays a big role. It's a concept worthy importing."

No, its not. Neither is arranged marriages. Some cultural concepts should just stay in the 3rd world where they belong (and since China is on its way to not being a 3rd world, its high time they drop the concept themselves).

"Face saving also motivates people to suceed and pursue higher education."

No, all it does it makes people PRETEND that they do these things. Did you even read the article. This Tang guy refused an honest' day job because he thought he was too good for it. Not to mention he wasn't above begging and panhandeling: just above doing it where people who knew him wouldn't know.

"Saving face can be a heavy burden at times, but it acts as an invisible hand guiding a person's actions each day to be upright and honorable. Not bad. Helps to keep you out of trouble."

Like shooting two innocent tourists? I stand by my previous comment: China is better off without this loser (and others like him). It will eventually improve, with or without Tang.

Do you really know what saving face means? It's a concept of honor. As with any such concepts, it CAN be taken out of proportion, and that's where trouble begins. Tang seems to have used it as an excuse even whilst doing shameful things (gambling excessively, wasting money on "elite" cigarette brands). Saving face is neither a bad thing nor a "3rd world" trait -- it's the people who misuse the concept who are to blame.

Anyone who has not been to China and worked in it has no business pretending it is a mess. The American mess is much greater, our financial problems far larger, our social problems of divorce and mass illegitimacy destroying our economic systems and motivation to work. On behalf of all Americans, I apologize to Chinese readers who might be seeing this article. It just goes to show you that American media is just as biased as anywhere else.

This story horrified me a bit. Is there anything we can do to ease the stresses of everyday life?

I wish we could all stop saving face so much. I was struggling to keep up my own apartment, bills, etc., going crazy from the stress...I wanted to give it all up and live on the streets, because I felt like the stress was too much and because I didn't feel like I deserved a good life if I was so poor, relatively - instead, I live and work with my family now. I'm able to work and aid the family business and help my mother, who's getting on in years, to set up that business for her and our future. My self-esteem took a hit for a long time, but I'm over it. I'm where I can do the most good in a poor economic situation, and I'm keeping myself and my family healthy. And we're doing well now.

I pray more of us can help each other out instead of worrying about "face" and creating such harsh financial standards for self-esteem. We all could benefit from shaping the good things in our lives instead of keeping up with cultural expectations.

The answer to your concern is Dalai Lama. I have seen lines of well fed, well nourished, my beloved americanmen/women waiting to be enlightened by Dalai Lama in philadelphia earlier this year. His Holliness is working hard to convert the North America and Euro zone into his style of leisure, well, theocracy as well. Should he be successfull, the end of the most advanced human civilization in North America is coming.

      • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 11/16/2008 6:18:22 PM

Well, you are the winner of the Biggest Piece of Nonsense this week. How is the Dalai Lama going to establish a theocracy in America and Europe? I was more worried about Bush, Pat Robertson and their ilk into turning this country into a nationalistic theocracy, in which they succeeded at some minor but disturbing level. The people who have a mission of proselytizing are Christians and they do go all over the world turning people to their religion, so in that sense Christianity is more a threat to non-Christians than any other religion against Christianity. If you do the final tally, more people have been killed in the name of a monotheistic god than any other religion has in the world.

Why can't just the Dalai Lama be a good, religious man who is concerned about his nation? I'm not scared of the Dalai Lama but Pat Robertson and Sarah Palin scare the bejesus out of me.

Honestly Ronald, you do go on, he may be murderous, I really don't know, of course I doubt it. But he can't possibly be a dictator because he has no government or country to dictate to. You're repeating everything you've been told without ever examining your ideas independently.

    • Posted By: countmyvote @ 11/17/2008 1:22:10 AM

What you described sounds like you did the honorable thing and that is what 'saving face' is primarily about - especially treating your elders well.

Many of the middle and upper class Chinese people didn't seek prosperity as much as they were overtaken by prosperity. There was no careful plan to buy a large apartment, car, or any of the luxuries many now have. Then, some had their prosperity taken away. They had no idea how to find a new job, start over, or get over the shock of losing a job. They may have also felt betrayed by those who helped them get the job.

Now that China will stop borrowing America money to buy Chinese products, they will increase the domestic salary to encourage an increasing domestic market. What is the point of selling goods to America who wont be able to pay back the debt, it is better to start transfering the higher standard of living to China

I agree that both the leader: "Beijing is pumping more than half a trillion dollars into the Chinese economy in order to stave off unrest. It has good reason to worry" as well as the link: ???China: The World's Most Stressful Society??? are both off the mark. The premise of the leader isn't adequately explored within the article and the link is more than a little grandiose and certainly open to (endless) interpretation.

As to making a connection between one man's actions and a monumental shift in an entire society, I think people are missing the point. Certainly the author isn't stating that Tang is just the tip of some homicidal iceberg, but rather, that because of the rapid shift in this society away from two thousand years of culture and 50 years of complete communism, many of its people, especially older ones, are having a very difficult time adjusting. The author simply provides background on how one person's inability to adapt manifested itself as a murder / suicide. I think her point is well made that Tang was unable to cope and so, in his case alone, this led to a random act of violence. That many others may be equally affected, but don???t demonstrate their anxiety and loss of place in such spectacular fashion is certainly plausible. Tang had previously secured a position in a world he knew and understood, but was unable to change when this world was turned upside down. This is a human condition, seen repeatedly in civilizations throughout the world.

Any student of history knows that a completely oppressed society is not going to explode - only when a society has begun improving and the pace is seen as either too slow or too fast is there a risk of massive civil discontent ??? hence, I would guess, the allusion to China's economy and how important its continued growth is to maintaining order.

The article seems well researched and well written, but apparently whoever was responsible for its title and teaser didn???t actually read it. I say shame on the editor - not the author.

The article overly generalizes China's complex problems. One man's schizophrenic act cannot be dubbed as a prelude to a county's doom. it is just a kind of wishful thinking.

Zakaria is right - America needs more brain power. And it should start with Newsweek..
How ironical that the best and the worst of journalism are both represented at Newsweek?
Does it have to set the mindlessly vicious against the insightful to achieve "balance"?
