The people who say that communism and socialism are inherently bad apparently never listened in their political science class, and instead took to heart the words of scared politicians. Just because a political ideology has been drastically skewed by power hungry dictators does not mean that "communism" as an ideology is the enemy of "freedom" as Americans think they know it.

That's true. China is much more like a fascist dictatorship with capitalistic characteristics....

China's atheism is very detrimental to the Nation. It's a country that abuses its citizens and is very cruel to animals evidenced by its massacre of countless dogs and cats for fur. It's food is unsafe and it's environment is polluted and toxic.

What utter nonsense. Atheists are the happinest people of all. Religion poisons the mind. Many religions ritualize killing animals as sacrifices and their isn't a person in the world who eats meat who has not contributed to the cruel and inhumane treatment of animals.

Atheists are the happiest people of all. Religion poisons the mind and is evidence of psychosis. It seems to me that for thousands of years it has been religious types who have gone about sacrificing animals, and there is no one who eats meat who can claim that they are not cruel to animals.

While I'd say that excessive theism kept Europe in a intellectual mire for a few centuries, there is a good point in what you are saying; people of faith are less likely to commit suicide than people without. The driving factor in this story seems to be a loss of status and family cohesion, ending in a depression that lasted years. Unfortunately the signs were there but there didn't seem to be anyone with enough authority to take him to a psychiatrist or conduct an intervention. Very sad story.

maybe???chiniese people was the most peaceful and calmful persons in the word. long before, the chinese men only have three goals in their all life?????????wife, children, warm bed???. but with the increasingly chase of economic achievement, in contrast with the decresing of traditional culture's influenece, the society has been becoming more and more unequal, and major of them lost faith and direction. then, violence break out.

China is the world's most stressful society?

I bet folks living in the Congo or Darfur would gladly trade places with anyone in China.

If this guy had killed a tourist from any other country before committing suicide, his story would never have made the news - its only because the victim was related to an American athlete at the Olympics that we'er even reading about this.

Depression and suicide, unfortunately, are not news.

Key difference between India and China is this.
On a personal level Indian family and deep rooted religeous stereo types reduces such events from happening in Indian society. I am not saying these things do not happen in India but relatively are less in India than in China where due to cultural revolution their rich spiritual base is almost eroded from Chinese psyche.
More China pursues this mindless development without a proper spiritual base these kind of stress induced incidents cant be avoided. Therein lies the caution for indians - dont leave your spiritual base and go after life in a mechanical way. Stay engaged with family.

I think the article is just a portrait of one man's downward spiral to madness and murder, not meant to be taken as an overall reflection of Chinese society as a whole. After all, people are getting laid off all over the world and 99.999% of them find new jobs and get on with their lives without resorting to mental issues, crime or murder. For example, the US media has been giving attention to the story of Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre because this month is the 30th anniversary; however I don't think anyone is taking the news coverage to mean that everybody in Guyana is like Jim Jones.

Sure there's tons of pressure in China because everything is changing so quickly and everyone wants to reap the rewards of a booming economy. But the rich are getting richer (the government officials) and the poor are still poor, so social tensions will keep on increasing. A plane full of Chinese tourists going abroad does not necessarily reflect the situation in the country as a whole. On the average, everyone is doing better, but for the Chinese, who are always conscious about "saving face", it's never easy to be less well off than your neighbor. Here in Canada it's a bit easier to think that "I can be less well off on my own terms", but in China that's entirely unacceptable. The truth is that most people in China are barely scrapping by by Western standards and millions of university graduates are unemployed or have a job that drives them nuts. Assembly cell phones or toys in a factory isn't necessarily inspiring work. If given the chance to leave China, many of them would take advantage of the opportunity since abroad they are more likely to achieve what they want if they try. In China it's not the case. There aren't enough opportunities for everyone, let alone meaningful jobs for educated graduates.

Dear Melinda: As one of well-fed and over-nourished American woman, you should worry about more of America, your home land before else. There are exploding sales of guns in your motherland now than ever, even your motherland is in recession. I am heading to the gun dealer now to buy another assaulting rifle and more ammunitions. Why? The economy is bad, really bad. Your American countrymen and women are worried not only about economy, also safety. Plus, I am not sure those white skin heads have given up their hated to the black president-elect yet and people are worried about the possibility of president Kennedy II. So much so, dear melinda girl, please focus on your motherland, the United States of Socialism or Communism of America.

jxl269 - the problem with us Americans is that we are introverted and mostly only interested in what happens here in the US, like the latest celebrity gossip or election news. It's refreshing to see news from around the world, and I thought Melinda's piece on China was very interesting. I hope to see more Newsweek articles like Melinda's, I thought it was very well written.

to the moron below me its clear you are pro china for you to say such a thing. Communism is bad thing and I hope people someday reject all forms of it. China blames everything on dalai lama but they once had a peaceful nation of tibet before communist came in and invaded it and now doing cultral genocide. Jxl269 is pro chinese so no matter how much blood china has on it hands ( darfur and refusing any atheletes from darfur to compete in the blood oympics)

    • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 11/16/2008 6:08:50 PM

China is a communist country in name only,a s anyone who has read anything about it should know. While I disagree with them in their policy towards Tibet in the strongest way possible, our country is guilty of a great many things. Let's not forget we went into Vietnam and it wasn't to plant trees, we bombed and orphaned a large percent of Cambodia, supported military juntas in Latin America, the Baath party in Iraq (before, during and after the chemical massacre of the Kurds) and a great many other unsavory leaders. Let's not forget Iraq now. When your house is made of glass, throwing stones is not the smartest thing to do.

The -for lack of a better word- interesting part of this story is that Switzerland is a very socialist, with a huge safety net but they also have one of the highest suicide rate in the world. China is experiencing the same while the social net is disappearing and they become more and more a capitalist country. There is no single cause for depression, a state I'd not wish anyone to go through, but concerned families, counseling and daily exercise can help lots.

I wonder how US government responsed to this issus! this piece of information seems not be let out until now. how could it be kept so long?!

  • Posted By: poiuytrewq @ 11/16/2008 9:54:16 AM

I wonder how US government responsed to this issue.

  • Posted By: freedomeagle @ 11/16/2008 9:40:50 AM

You say US soldiers are losers, but they would put their lives on the line to save yours if that was their job. That way you could spread your cowardly views. You are probably a cowardly immigrant that lives in the US also.

  • Posted By: nawawimohamad @ 11/16/2008 4:49:03 AM

Like the US whose soldiers scrificed their lives for the country, Tang also sacrificed himself for his country so that China can continue to progress and need not bother losers like him. Did I say losers? Yes, losers same as the US soldiers.

  • Posted By: kw9751 @ 11/16/2008 4:05:02 AM

I'm glad the Chinese government worries about such things. Unlike the American governmment who don't give a *** about gun totting mass murders that occur at a regular occurance in the US.

Life for urban Chinese is stressful too, only for different reasons. Life for the Japanese workers is stressful too, hence the Japanese term karoshi. Everyone's life is stressful when you try to survive in this competitive world. But what shocks me about this article is the subliminal message that a poor Chinese peasant's life is only worth mentioning when his father stabbed a white American. Shame on you, Newsweek.

    • Posted By: Generic Person @ 11/16/2008 1:04:07 AM

Oh yeah, totally. You know what else? Tang was an allegory for Jesus, his pride was Satan, and China was purgatory. Shame on Newsweek indeed, Jesus will never be defeated. Shame on Newsweek indeed, they are supposed to have an objective view on religion.
